Library fundraising hampered by Bush’s unpopularity.

U.S. News reports that “President Bush’s friends are concerned that he will face serious problems raising the estimated $250 million needed to build his presidential library, museum, and policy center at Southern Methodist University. … They fear that Bush’s unpopularity will put a damper on donations and that the sour economy will limit contributions even more.”

    “President Bush’s friends…”

These are the sad losers looking for a soft place to land when they get thrown off the Gravy Train.

  2. Guido OBGYN Lover says:

That and the fact that it will be a hate magnet right in the heart of Dallas.

  3. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Come on, you can go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy one of those storage sheds for less than $1000 for a really nice one. How much room do you need for “My Pet Goat” and a roll of toilet paper, the only documents Bush has considered important?

  4. LividLib says:

a pole barn would be fitting

  5. Guido OBGYN Lover says:

The Bush library rightly belongs in the UAE or Barefootistan or someplace like that.

  11. McWars says:

    Contribute to Bush’s library?

No thanks, I’d rather pick up some books.

  12. Shayne says:

Contributions are more likely to be used for legal fees than for the construction of any library. But if people are dumb enough to send their money there it won’t be tax deductible, right?

  13. Daddy-O says:

Looks like he might be placing that ‘library’ down in Paraguay.

Right where it belongs. Unless we get an extradition treaty with them sometime in the future.

Of course, we’ll all be dead by then, so…

  14. Chris L says:

I’m sure he’ll pull through at the last minute with a couple of large contributions from friends in Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar, Dubai. It will be the first presidential library fully funded from international sources.

  15. raynman says:

Why don’t they get their financing from the same place Dubya has been getting all his money? OPEC??

  17. Dreary Urbanite says:

Well duh! Everything this president has proposed has turned to shit. Why not start doing exactly the opposite of what he wants and make america a better place.

  18. osage says:

I’m sure Mr. Bush will find a way through his self-protecting cocoon of delusion to blame this on the Democrats or al Qaeda or anti-war leftists or people of different color, ethnicity, sexual preference or religion. Perhaps the economic recession brought on by irresponsible lackeys like Alan Greenspan are to blame. Actually, I believe it has more to do with who and what George W. Bush is. A man who arrogantly and ignorantly and selfishly failed to serve the best interests of the American people and the United States of America. At the end of the day, truth will out and the lack of an honorary library will be a relatively minor embarassment compared to the infamies he will be forced to endure for the remainer of his ignoble and shame filled existence.

  19. MCMetal says:

    Why even bother ?

Just convert one of those neo-con (non) “think tanks’” broom closet into Chimpy’s library ; how much room does one need for coloring books anyway ?

  20. missmolly says:

Waitaminnit — what happened to all the oil men, big business fat cats, and other FOBs that have gotten rich off their buddy Dubya the past seven years? Why aren’t they paying back all those favors by contributing to Bush’s library?

Or do they have no use for a lame duck?

  21. dim wit says:

Maybe Bush could sell the naming rights to his library. Something like:
The Exxon George W Bush Library

though I am unsure oil companies will want to sully their reputations by being associated with Bush.

  22. VA Voter says:

I don’t see why you folks don’t want the library built?

  23. texaslady says:

Seems like several colleges and cities turned down the bush library. Hey, let the bush family pony up some cash, some cash they have stolen from the American public.

  24. Nevar says:

Or do they have no use for a lame duck?

    Comment by missmolly

They have a future lame duck they need to spend money on right now.
It costs a lot of money to attach all those strings, and set the stage for their next puppet show.

  33. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

So, the students and the faculty at SMU don’t want Bush and now it looks like he will have a hard time fund raising for his “library”, perhaps his fantasy won’t bear fruit. There’s always his buddies the Saudi’s to fund it, but I am getting the feeling that even they are done with Bush. He has done what they wanted by creating a situation where they can jack the price of oil up to obscene levels, so they really no longer have any use for him.

No doubt ther’ll be an entrance fee, so will they only accept Euros?

I’m not sure that The Pet Goat, unopened copies of the Bible and L’Etranger and piles of Guns ‘n Ammo with their pages stuck together constitutes a library, as such, more like the remnants of a garage sale.

    Comment by VA Voter — March 10, 2008 @ 1:11 pm

You are confusing hate with outrage. I don’t hate Bush. I certainly hate what he has done to this country and to the government. The carnage resulting from this one presidency will take years to clean up, and it may never be what it was.

But this issue of this thread is Bush’s presidential library, so I will focus on that. There are a couple of issues here that any American (including you — at least I’m assuming you are an American) should be concerned with.

First — we are concerned about the executive order Bush signed at the beginning of his first term giving himself permission to keep any documents “secret” forever. Every other president with a library has all his papers there — why can’t Bush?

Second — we are concerned that Bush wants to lend credibility to his library by having it associated with an academic institution (SMU), but won’t give SMU any control over the institute the library comes with. This is a “having your cake and eating it too” situation that has left many people at SMU quite angry.

And Third — we are concerned that Bush won’t release his donor list. What has he got to hide?

There is plenty to be outraged about here — mostly having to do with the unprecedented and blatant secrecy surrounding the library and his presidency in general. Why aren’t YOU outraged? Or would you only be outraged if Clinton (or any other Democratic president) built his library in this manner?

Thank you for reminding me how lucky I am. My friends won’t make me rich with material wealth, and they won’t make me powerful politically. But they can always be counted on to support me during tough times, celebrate with me during good times, and help me whenever I’m in trouble. I am never concerned that they will abandon me for somebody more dazzling.

How sad for Bush. Even Nixon’s buddies Rebozo and Abplanalp hung in there with him.

Mr. Bush, we really think you should give serous thought to erecting your outhouse, er, I mean, library as an outbuilding (yeah, that’s it) as part of the Iraq Embassy. And you might consider living there so you can witness everyday the outpouring of love for you. Why, I bet you’d get flowers and chocolates for the opening of your library there, so look for the backpack with the funny letters on it that say “We love you, W”.

    Comment by hellinabucket — March 10, 2008 @ 2:47 pm

Maybe that’s because ALL OTHER presidential libraries show presidents in a “warts and all” mode (although they do tend to be arranged to show off the president’s best side) by including all their papers. These libraries can be important historical, research, and educational facilities no matter how history judges the quality of that president’s administration.

On the other hand, Bush isn’t interested in building such a library. He’s more interested in building a monument to himself. That narrows down the field of possible contributors from those who would value a presidential library from a historical standpoint to those who are willing to pay for Dubya’s ego trip.

  77. snowcker says:
