McCain Says America Is Both ‘In A Recession’ And Has A ‘Strong’ Economy On The Same Day

On Friday, new Labor Department numbers showing that employers slashed jobs by 63,000 in February offered “ominous signs that the country is falling toward a recession or has already toppled into one.” So stark was the grim economic data that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was forced to reverse his happy talk and admit that “it’s very likely” that America is “in a recession.”

But in an interview recorded the same day with CBS’s 60 Minutes, McCain returned to his old rhetorical ways, optimistically declaring that “the fundamentals of our economy are still strong“:

Asked how he would characterize the mortgage mess, McCain said, “I think it’s a disaster, but let me hasten to add, Scott, I think the fundamentals of our economy are still strong.”

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/McCainEconomyStrong.320.240.flv]

Despite increasing indications that the economy is getting weaker, McCain has spent months echoing President Bush and insisting that “the fundamentals of this economy are strong”:

– “I don’t know technically whether we’re going into a recession or not, but I believe in the long term, our fundamentals are strong.” [3/3/08]

– “I think if we’re going to be in some shaky times – and by the way, I believe the fundamentals of America’s economy [are] still strong.” [2/3/08]

– “And by the way, I don’t believe we’re headed into a recession. I believe the fundamentals of this economy are strong, and I believe they will remain strong.” [Fox News Debate, 1/10/08]

McCain has a self-proclaimed lack of economic knowledge, but he is insistent on claiming the “fundamentals are strong.” Yet actual economists say there is real cause for concern.

At an economic conference on Friday, former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers said that “we are facing the most serious combination of macroeconomic and financial stresses that the United States has faced in at least a generation.” “We are in nearly unprecedented territory with respect to financial strain,” added Summers.

Has anyone asked him to define precisely what those “fundamentals” are? My bet is that the question would be met with either:
    (A) empty platitudes about the American spirit and glory of capitalism; or
    (B) a deer in the headlights look rivaling the one on Bush’s face when told about the WTC attacks.

  14. Tired of being lied to says:

Maybe Johnny could explain just exactly what he defines as “the fundamentals of our economy.”

This would be very helpful because all the fundamentals I can think of – inflation rate, job creation, unemployment, the credit markets, housing equity, housing sales, budget deficit, stock market, trade deficit, value of the dollar, etc. – all look like hell to me.

John, what are the “fundamentals” that you see that look so “strong?” (Or did you OD on the Geritol, again?)

Realistically this is no longer funny as there are elderly and people losing jobs that are running headlong into some of the worst times this countyr has seen since the depression.

Food has become a luxury for many of us. Gas has been taken off the list except for only necessary driving to the job or hauling groceries. In the construction business here in Florida people are calling and asking for work. Wives are looking for cleaning jobs. Men are looking to recycle metals.

The fall of the dollar is creating this mess and you can thank the not so “federal” reserve money men for pumping so much fiat money out that it has pretty much become worthless.

We are in very dire straits in many many areas right now and it is going to get a lot worse. 690 billion (that’s with a B) of mortgages are going to reset between now and hte end of the month. The glut of foreclosures is just starting.

Sure there will be some who can pick up a deal but there simply aren’t enough people to suck up all the slack.

I just don’t beleive most people including many of the younger generation know what’s in store. Our own included.

If you haven’t seen the movie zeitgeist.com online you owe yourself a look see.

To give him the slimmest benefit of the doubt, one could say that “the fundamentals of the economy are strong” in that I don’t, yet, believe we are going into a years long slow down, ala the Great Depression, that will impact us for decades. That having been said, I do expect, if there is nothing done to shore up infrastructure and soften the blow to the middle and lower classes, family finances could be ruined and the ability of people to move up in the economy will be severely set back.

The amazing part is that we have had two recessions within the same presidency. This really is unprecedented. We are seeing a monumental shift in our economy and population. Good manufacturing jobs are going away, the standard of living for most people is falling and the ability to move from one economic class to another is falling. I find it interesting that Hillary Rove Clinton’s handlers say that Obama must pass a “national security” threshold, when they have been unable to articulate why Ms. Clinton passes this same threshold. When asked what she has done to show that she is ready to answer the phone at 3 am, there were crickets chirping in the background until finally one of them stammered something inarticulate about how all her “experience” has made her prepared.

Obama needs to ask at every campaign stop, “what is this ‘experience’ that Hillary Rove Clinton claims she possesses and where did it come from?”

Well, you know what they say about politicians. They all have three hats — the one they pass around, the one they throw into the ring, and the one they talk through.

McCain is playing both sides against the middle in the attempt to have it both ways — especially as a Republican, he can’t possibly afford to do otherwise. If he refuses to acknowledge that the economy is in or at least heading into a recession, he risks alienating a large number of voters who are being forcibly confronted with the effects. However, admitting that the economy is not strong would suggest that George W. Bush has not done a good job as President and that Republican economic policies have failed. McCain would risk alienating voters who continue to support Bush and his policies. Unfortunately for McCain, as Aesop once said, “try to please everyone and you please no one” — all this really serves to do is to make McCain seem uninformed, indecisive, and/or duplicitous.

We have a massive trade deficit, an even more massive national debt, the dollar isn’t worth anything, job loss is growing, energy prices are skyrocketing, health care is increasingly unaffordable, education continues to lag, a war that he supports that is costing billions every month, increased government spending, poor international relations, an American public that has had to listen to it’s government spread lies and fear for the last 8 years, crooks on Wall Street, crooks in Washington, crooks in the White House, on and on and on.

Again, what are these fundamentals that McCain is talking about.

  85. The Shadow says:

This OLD man is too old to become President. Do Republicans really want to see an old man end up with althemiers sitting in the oval office? Apparently they are willing to elect the oldest man ever to run and in the process rish our country’s welfar because they couldn’t get any younger man to win the nomination. They counter by saying he should pick a younger running mate. There’s only one problem with that, and that is we don’t elect VPs to become the head guy because the old man can’t function anymore.

  86. texaslady says:

#89 – Good comment. I wish the debates would ask some of those same questions instead of the airy feel good themes. Lets hear the plan to right the wrongs instead of we need change. But of course McCain doesn’t think anything is wrong so no changes needed there. What an idiot !

A half-gallon of milk in my area: almost $4.00.

  88. Nevar says:

The Fed isn’t spending the money on bailing out banks or hedge funds or “helping rich people”. It is making fully-collateralised loans that will be repaid the next day (or week).

    Comment by jackball

Not to mention, by the way, the astronomical tax breaks given to Bank of America in exchange for buying up Countrywide Mortgage Co., far and away the biggest culprit in the sub-prime fiasco.
But then money never paid to the government can’t count as money, can it?

  89. texaslady says:

Jackball- Who do you think bails out lenders ? A government agency was put in place in 1990 in Texas to do nothing but try to sell foreclosed property and they sure didn’t get the whole cost. Who insures your savings that the bank invested badly ?

As I mentioned there are some eye opening books with facts and figures out there to enlighten you.

  90. texaslady says:

What is really bad is the ones making money are paying less in taxes so those in the middle are carrying everyone…the poor and the rich.

  91. osage says:

I think McCain’s efforts to appeal to the right wing religious extremists, while not alienating independents and moderate conservatives, has created a three faces of John Sidney McCain, III problem. He apparently has a multi-personality disorder that causes him to change into a candidate with diametrically opposed beliefs in the middle of his campaign speeches and interviews. I kinda feel sorry for a man so lost in his own conflicts, he has no awareness of which John Sidney McCain, III personality is doing the talking. Unless of course, he’s just repeating what the changing voices in in his head tell him to say for purposes of political expediency.

  92. Jericho says:

O my God, McCain has finally reached dementia.

Why are these so very tough times:
    a. 9/11
    b. mortgage crisis
    c. Iraq war
    d. immigration
    e. Bush/Cheney policy
    f. foreign oil dependence

Hmm, while McCain says b and f, and probably thinks d and a too but doesn’t express it, it is clearly c and e that are the cause of the high gas price and the recession. 4 more years!

  93. OsirisHusseinOsiris says:

Now that’s what’s called speaking with forked tongue. This guy’s a two-bit liar and fraud.

  94. christopher wiwi says:

Wow, he can talk out of both sides of his MOUTH at the same time. What a BOOB. The more he talks the more he is looking like old man Johnny Mclame.

  95. flavorino says:

tonight on 60 minutes, i didn’t catch the whole thing, but at one point i swore i heard him talking about how awful torture was… about how the US tried and convicted japanese soldiers…

i waited for the follow up: “but, sir, you voted to allow torture…”
    it didn’t happen…

    but i could’ve missed it…

Now now, we all know Grandpa sometimes gets a little ‘confused’ don’t embarass him with confusing questions.
Just let him keep talking, eventually he’ll get tired and take a nap.

  96. Mugsy says:

I’ve been waiting for SOMEONE, ANYONE to ask McCain to spell out exactly what those “fundamentals” are, because the dollar is collapsing, employment is shrinking, entire industries are being shipped overseas, home ownership, personal savings, and middle-income wealth are all shrinking, and the National Debt has exploded to the point where nearly a third of every tax dollar goes justto pay interest on the debt.

What are the “strong fundamentals” they keep talking about? CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE ASK HIM?

  98. Evil Spaniard says:

McCain Says America Is Both ‘In A Recession’ And Has A ‘Strong’ Economy On The Same Day

In short: ‘America is in a Strong Recession’

  99. batteries says:

Food has become a luxury for many of us. Gas has been taken off the list except for only necessary driving to the job or hauling groceries. In the construction business here in Florida people are calling and asking for work. Wives are looking for cleaning jobs. Men are looking to recycle metals.

The fall of the dollar is creating this mess and you can thank the not so “federal” reserve money men for pumping so much fiat money out that it has pretty much become worthless.

We are in very dire straits in many many areas right now and it is going to get a lot worse. 690 billion (that’s with a B) of mortgages are going to reset between hp omnibook 6000 battery,hp omnibook 6100 battery now and hte end of the month. The glut of foreclosures is just starting.
