Rove: ‘I Fully Expect To Be Indicted By The End Of The Year’»

karl_rove2.jpgKarl Rove, former senior aide to President Bush, spoke to a hostile crowd at the University of Iowa yesterday evening. Students and local citizens protested his appearance at the university and “staged a mock trial” for Rove inside the student union before the speech.

During the lecture, Rove lashed out at hostile questioners, telling one man his comment showed “a simple, stupid mind” and chastised what he said were “stupid statements” from the audience. Rove also said that former Amb. Joseph Wilson “lied” about his 2002 trip to Niger and accused an audience member of “perpetuating libel” on the U.S. military for asking about the real number of deaths in the Iraq war:

After Rove said most Western intelligence agencies agreed that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction prior to the war, Durham said, “When I had dinner with Joe Wilson, that’s not what he said.”

“With all do respect, Joe Wilson lied about his [intelligence gathering] trip to Africa,” Rove responded, drawing more boos. […]

When an audience member asked him about the “true” body count in Iraq, Rove accused the individual of “perpetuating libel on the military of the United States by accusing them of killing innocent Iraqis.”

Responding to a question about CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson’s outing, Rove, seemingly joking, added:

I haven’t been indicted yet, but I fully expect to be by the end of the year.

The University paid Rove $40,000 for the speech and had to agree to limit “recording equipment and flash photography” to “the first five minutes of the lecture.” At the end of the talk, an audience member shouted at Rove: “Can we have our $40,000 back?” Rove replied: “No, you can’t.

Perhaps Rove needs to keep the $40,000 in expectation of substantial legal fees.

Digg it!

  1. JMOHR Says:

Rove is being treated the way that all disgraced, former officials need to be treated. For too long, we have permitted Ollie North and the leftovers from Nixon’s administration to assume positions of public prominence. It is time to teach public officials that unethical and illegal conduct in office will not result in a cushy public life afterwards.

  31. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

With all due respect, Mr. Rove, you are a despicable, lying, manipulative, hateful, evil, bottom-dwelling perverter of American politics and morality who prostituted himself to pleasure other equally corrupt, greedy, low-life scum seeking to gain political power to fatten their wallets and already bulging egos.

$40, 000 - pretty good wages for one little piss.

  32. missmolly Says:

There you go again, TP — teasing us again. Turned out Rove was only joking.

But if we actually COULD get some investigation into and accountability for voter caging, Diebold mischief, U.S. Attorney manipulating, dirty tricks in general (and those are just ROVE’S misdeeds), and all the other alleged crimes of this administration, it will be a great day in America.

  36. CitiDC Says:

Karl Rove sold his Ingram, TX bed and breakfast business “River Oaks Lodge” to a political consultant/business partner in 2003. Rove received $$ over the assessed value of the business.

This is one of many illegal payoffs that Rove seems to have accepted while drawing his $161,000 government salary.

  37. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Wow, I’m glad to see someone finally stand up to this a$$hole. I would have loved to be there and watch Rove implode. If they are any example, the Republicans will be out of office for a very long time before they are ever brought to justice.

I wouldn’t wish brain cancer on anyone. But at least it gave Lee Atwater the chance to repent for some of his political sins and apologize to some of the people he made a career of attacking.

Somehow I just don’t see his protege Rove doing that. He’s going to go to his grave believing that the horrible ends justified the horrible means.

No, you’re right — cancer shouldn’t be wished on anyone. I’m sorry that Lee Atwater didn’t survive long enough to see the wreckage his dirty tricks ultimately brought to America.

I do believe his remorse at the end of his life was genuine, but if he had not had the cancer and was still alive today, I’m not so sure he would be anything but proud of the totalitarian state the neocons have built.

Even Rove could be contrite under the right circumstances. Getting broken does funny things to people. There was a time I couldn’t imagine George Wallace apologizing for his segregationist actions, yet that’s exactly what he spent the last years of his life doing.

    Comment by Bilbo Hussein Baggins — March 10, 2008 @ 12:22 pm

We also need to remember that the Republicans probably won’t be out of office forever, so we have only a window to work with. Furthermore, if the Democrats don’t come in, clean up the mess, and exhibit some Rooseveltian leadership, that window could be very small.

Remember when the Dems thought the Republicans would take forever to rebuild after Watergate in 1974? Only six years later, Reagan was elected in 1980.

Live free and beauty surrounds you

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You’re free as the roaring tide

It’s a good point. There do seem to be a number of “Confessions of a Republican hit man” books out right now, written by operatives who’ve been convicted of some type of fraud.

It’d be nice if the hatchet men and women of both would learn the error of their ways before the reaper or the long arm of justice starts knocking.

Like I’ve said over and over again, these Bushies will only be welcome in the puny minority of extreme right wing circles, a bed they made for themselves when they decided that dividing America for political gain was the way to win elections.
They will never be welcomed by the majority of mainstream America.
They chose to speak to and represent only right wing extremist groups.
Bush is only polling at 19%, which means Rove and the rest of the Bushies will be welcomed in even smaller circles.
Bush and Rove have effectively destroyed the right wing movement by exposing all the lies it was built upon.
Too bad they had to destroy much of America in the process.

Name one thing the Dems have done that they promised to win the 2006 elections. Where is our military, Iraq. Cut the funding, but no, they are afraid. How about the SCHIP bill for kids ? What about FISA ? Even my hero Gary Webb finked out.
The Dems have 80% Americans on their side and they are too cowardly to use the power. I am so discouraged with the present situation.

And I will never forget the recession there were NO jobs or they paid $4.25 if you were lucky, with a college degree.

  97. Zimzone Says:

Rove was too scared to come out of the restaurant with protesters outside, so he went in & finished eating his Pig’s Knuckles.

  98. robertoroberto Says:

It’s take more than 40 g’s to find a lawyer good enough and dirty enough to fight for Rove. He’s going to need to sell some image rights. A few suggests for his agent -

    Punching bags?

    Closets?

    Washing Machines?

And of course, they could always put that Rove label directly on every coffin that leaves Iraq. Along the with the moniker of all those bastard Neocons who have contributed to the deaths of up to a million people in that country.

Yeah, Like George Wallace…..I’m sorry but if they can admit to it when they are dying then that just tells me they knew all along……ok, you’ve changed your ways but how do we undo all the damage you have caused? kinda like the death penalty….you can’t take it back.

It’s easy to be benevolent when you are no longer the power driving the evil.

  101. texaslady Says:

Rove, Cheney, the rest of bootlickers in bush’s gang….will all land soft jobs with lobbyists. It would just be nice if one time, one of them would realize the wrong they did. From the energy crisis in California and Cheney standing up for Enron to outing a CIA agent, endangering other coverts for their own means. Or lying America into a never ending war. Just once a little justice, please.

  102. rocks911 Says:

    98,

Until the Democrats get an overwhelming majority in the house and senate to overcome the obstructionist conserv666atives certainly Democratic values will not be enacted.

But back to the point, the two parties are very different as has been my experience in 47 years. Just look at the trends.

  103. techsong Says:

I think they should do a student vote on his appearance before wasting $40,000 on this scumbag.

  104. nycbassist Says:

What I wouldn’t give to see videos of this smack-down! C’mon, you youtubers.. there has to be ONE of you with some footage.

  105. gus smith Says:

Silly students paying this alleged criminal $40,000! The money would be better spent publishing their angst far and wide.

  106. texaslady Says:

Rocks911 -We will have to agree to disagree. Have been a Dem since before Nixon…shunned by my own family for calling Nixon a liar spouting his secret for getting out of Veitnam. But, the political game has gotten so greedy and corrupt that the Dems have had to join just to play. Tell me you are not a little disappointed in their actions since 2006? Where is the impeachment that was talked about or even making some accountability ? I realize the bush machine is huge but come on try a little.

  107. JMOHR Says:

How does anyone want to fit Elliot Spitzer into this discussion?

  108. christopher wiwi Says:

the best part is he is going to help Johnny Mclame he must have a short memory but we don`t. Old man Mclame is doomed when Nov comes KKKarl will be indicted and will be useless to Mclame.

    God we’re a stupid country.

  110. flavorino Says:

I read this on CNN’s Ticker, but they buried the best part. Two people attempted a citizen’s arrest on Rove.

Kudos to the real Americans at U of I that stood up to a traitor.

Youth usually has a lower tolerance for hypocrisy than their elders.

  111. DennisDunbar Says:

Water board this sissy and lets see what he is made of.

  112. USWeapon Says:

You liberal hacks are hysterical. I don’t stand that Rove is a saint or that the Bush administration is flawless, but this holier than thou bullcrap you all peddle is disgusting. It’s one thing to have an opinion but a whole other ballgame altogether the way that you all live in total la la land as to the reality of the world. The second you think the “Bush Machine” is even a little more corrupt than the “Clinton Machine” is the second that you have allowed sites like this one to delude your brain completely.

  113. panahi Says:

I think we could all learn alot by taking a deep breath of fresh air, and really feeling out our anger towards the US administration. On one hand I hear Americans talking about how bad the war is, and on the other how bad Iraq is. WTF? I just wonder why people can’t resolve those conflicts in their mind. Isn’t the law based on some rational concept? Don’t we have a duty to protect as well as to serve?

It sounds to me like the students did not appreciate the school’s choice to pay Karl Rove to speak. The man is obviously very smart. He didn’t manufacture a degree or fake his way into the White House. He may not have all the answers, but that may be because the students failed to ask the right questions.

Why did Karl Rove do what he did? Moreover, what exactly did he do? Do any of the students know. I don’t know what he did. I read this whole article and most of the comments and not even a mention of anything substantive. I appreciate a good political rant as much as the next guy, but I like to have alittle beef in my stew!

  114. DrRogers Says:

Liberals just hate all non-liberals. So what else is new?

  115. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Just drifting around in the wee hrs marking territory like a dog, “Dr”?

  116. Voltron Says:

I agree, the money could have been better spent having a TRUE man of peace speak like maybe Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Then the students could have sat there rapt and in awe of such a great man who only wants the best for the world.

  117. Voltron Says:

I also like the loving tolerant nature of your righteous indignation.

  118. Zeibens Says:

I am the person ridiculed as being “stupid and simple minded because while he was going on about Saddam having killed 500,000 the US has only killed 150,000 so I quipped “So you are better because you have killed less people than Saddam?” to which the quick wit of Rove became that of a five year old.
He did a lot of egging people on. It was almost as if he was trying to incite a riot. It was close when it the very being he said “You’ll have time for your stupid questions and comments.” while some were yelling at him.
Plus I got to came him a draft dodger which he tried to deny by saying “You don’t know why draft status” to which I responded “Sure do. It is on the web. You had a student deferment when you weren’t a student. Federal crime buddy!”
The only awe I felt was that of his arrogance and the ease with which he lied and made things up. Hard to hold a conversation when one side does nothing that is remotely related to this reality.

  119. Voltron Says:

I take it you’re not majoring in english?

  120. dave from queens Says:

Don’t indict him yet. Indict him January 21, 2009.

  121. Zeibens Says:

Not an English major or an english major either but thanks for proofing.

  122. Zeibens Says:

    to panahi -
Rove did not finish college, he is draft dodger and he is not particularly smart.
He is a mean, mean spirited person and no compulsion about lying and if can not get his way by lying he turns to belittling people, insulting them, and just dismissing them. ARROGANCE! Is all that he has going for him, just like Bush. Rove thought he was building a 1,000 year reign of Republican power and has, instead, destroyed the Republican party since there is no room for moderate conservatives anymore.
I used to be a Republican and the party has left me. I have not moved much, politically speaking, since Goldwater but the current Republicans show no fiscal conservatism and no social conservatism. Bush and his group of thieves are simply converting public money to private money as fast as the can while pretending to protect us from global terrorism-whatever that is.
Rove was confrontational right from the start and grinned and smirked with every little cut he made at people in the audience. He gave no straight answers and simply went through the Bush speaking points.
He even claimed that the Federal gov’t was ready to go to New Orleans hours after the eye passed NO and it was the local government that screwed up.
    Blaming the victim.
People tried to asking questions but Rove did not engage into a discussion, rather he preached from his chair.
I was hoping to hear so insights into what and why the Bush administration did what they did but all anyone got was insults and the “bring it on” attitude. Like I said earlier, Rove seemed to be getting some perverse pleasure from working the crowd into a frenzy. The louder the boos the bigger the smile and he is suppose to be a public servant?
I was disappointed that he was paid 40K to simply reread his manifesto.

  123. madashell2 Says:

Of course he expect to be indictied by the end of the year, then Bush can pardon him and it’s all good.

  124. Arn Gunnutes Says:

    Rove is a TRAITOR.

Bush is a TRAITOR, MURDERER and a silver-spoon COXUCKER punk.

God SEES the EVIL that they have done, and will “reward” them like TRAITOR Ronnie Reagan.

    BURNING FOR McETERNITY!!
