Spitzer linked to prostitution ring.

By Matt Corley on Mar 10th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Spitzer linked to prostitution ring.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D) “informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring.” Spitzer “abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day” and “is set to make an announcement about 2:15 this afternoon at his Manhattan office.”

UPDATE: Fox News is reporting that sources say Spitzer is “expected to resign.”

UPDATE II: In his public statement, Spitzer apologized to the public and his family but did not resign.

UPDATE III: TNR notes that Spitzer once prosecuted prostitution rings.

Sex is good. I think we can all agree on that.

But one would think that his judgment has been seriously called into play here…to put it mildly.

I do appreciate his honesty and not drawing this out. I also appreciate the fact that he was a classic New York AG, but today I’m disappointed.

If the Governor can recover from this, that’s fine, but this may cost him a second term.

  37. davemartin7777 says:

The problem with NY prostitution rings is that organized crime may be involved.

That’s my only beef here… I’m all for legal, regulated prostitution.

“informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring.”

    ————————————-

“Involved”? That sounds like a teaser for the 11:00 news if I ever heard one. Involved as what? A customer? Part of the management structure? One of the workers? (that last one might be interesting).

I guess this means “stay tuned for the announcement.”

Assuming that he was one of the paying johns, I would hope that he would step down. Not because he goes out and engages in extramarital sex — as unsavory as that is, I’ve always believed that a person’s sex life should be private as long as it’s between consenting adults. Not so much because what he did is technically illegal (although I admit that is more problematic), because I would prefer that prostitution be legal and tightly regulated, as it is in Nevada.

No — it’s the hypocrisy that’s the issue here. Any elected official who publicly rails against prostitution while privately participating needs to be gone. No matter what political party they belong to.

And the hyprocrisy would be even more severe if his “involvement” turns out to be either managing the operation or taking graft money to keep quiet about it.

Free pass? Hardly, seeing the degree to which trolls such as this one bring it up every opportunity they get.

In retrospect, that would have to be one of the most expensive hummers in the history of the planet, thanks to GOOPer hypocrisy.

“Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr spent more than $6 million on the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the overall investigation of President
Clinton is becoming the most expensive in history, congressional
    auditors reported yesterday… Starr’s expenditures totaled $6.2
million in the six months through last Sept. 30, up nearly 60 percent
from the $3.9 million in the previous six months, said the GAO

It is sorry to see this happen to Spitzer. This seems to be the fate of many successful people. He should take his hits on this. Possibly resign. We are going to have to note his failings and he will have to pay the price. He is not as hypocritical as most of the Republicans who are involved in such scandals. He has gone after corporate crime, he has tried to help the little person and he has preached reform and ethics. He has not been setting himself up as the family’s value govenor and defender of traditional marriage. This is the primary difference between Democrats and Republicans under such circumstances.

All kidding aside, while non-coerced prostitution SHOULDN’T be illegal, it is, and you can’t have the man charged with carrying out the laws violate them. He always seemed like a decent guy in the interview I saw him in, if this is true and someone has the goods on him I suspect he’ll resign, unlike the embarassment that is Larry Craig.

If you will notice, most posters are calling for Spitzers resignation… we are principled and moral and require our political leaders to be as well. Scandal is not unique to any one party, but that doesn’t mean we should excuse it. Cognitive dissonance and dupilicty, however, do seem to be unique to a political persuasion.

Unfortunately, he’s been disappointing on that score so far — and after this latest incident, he needs to do the honorable thing and step down. That’s the only way that he can hope to set himself apart from other politicians who have been uncovered as being corrupt — he should publicly acknowledge his culpability, accept the consequences of his actions and voluntarily resign his seat.

This ignorant troll can’t see the difference. Bill Clinton did not run for office on a platform of cleaning up blow jobs. And he did not spend his time in office condemning blow jobs.

The reason why most people think that Spitzer should resign is because of the hypocrisy between what he advocated as a politician and what he did in private (if this is indeed what this is all about).

So perhaps this troll can tell us why the Republiscum party didn’t call for Vitter to resign?

And now francine drives off the rails. Ginrich not a womanizer, even though he was boinking someone on his staff while criticizing Clinton. Then there is also the inconvenient fact that he left his very sick wife for the women he was boinking. Then we have Guiliani who was boinking his current wife in the Governors mansion while his wife was living there. I think that’s a classic womanizer. Vitter was probably not a womanizer. Womanizers don’t have to pay to have sex with someone who is not his wife. And finally we have McCain who left his first wife who waited for him for years while he was in captivity for the young, rich hottie he was boinking. Nope, none of them are womanizers.

  128. JMOHR says:

Use of a prostitute may be hypocritical, certainly not legal and something that should be used to evaluate a person’s fitness in an election. However, it usually is not considered to be a matter of public corruption. Read they following from the NYT article:

“The Times reported that a person with knowledge of the governor’s role believes the governor is identified as a client in court papers. Four people allegedly connected to a high-end prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP were arrested last week. …

The case is being handled by prosecutors in the Public Corruption unit of U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia’s office. Garcia spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said the office had no comment. ”

I wonder if the DoJ is now actively using its public corruption units to target Democratic officeholders by looking for any possible crime on which to go after them. Note the significantly higher prosecution of Democratic officeholders on the state level than Republican officeholders. Curious Huh?

  132. joe cantwell says:

    Why?

    Comment by Keith — March 10, 2008 @ 2:55 pm

good question. i’ll try to answer. my libertarian side tells me that prostitution is a victimless crime and should not be outlawed. controlled and regulated yes, and kept private between customer and provider too. however at the moment it is illegal. and if you’ve sworn to uphold and enforce the law as spitzer has done both as attorney general and as governor then you must first do so first by example. if spitzer has failed in this task then he must resign. it is the right and honorable thing to do in a very dishonorable situation.

    ***********************************************

BULL! As in 100%, Grade-A bovine excrement!

You obviously haven’t ever lived here in New York City. Anyone who was living here while Giuliani was mayor could tell you that Rudy and his current wife were carrying on an extramarital affair while he was still married to his second wife, Donna Hanover — one so blatant that they did just about everything short of shouting it from the rooftops. To really put the icing on the proverbial cake, he didn’t even bother to tell Ms. Hanover of his intentions to separate from her before the press conference at which he made the announcement a matter of public record. If you want to know why his children Andrew and Caroline are estranged from him…well, this is at least part of the reason why, because of the way he treated their mother.

And that’s not all…Giuliani and Ms. Hanover started living together in 1982 before he was officially before he was officially divorced from his first wife, Regina Peruggi. I think you’ll find it hard to convince anyone that they were abstaining from sex while they were living together. So let’s see…we have a man who cheats on his first wife, moves in with his mistress before his divorce is finalized, marries her but eventually cheats on her with someone else, and lets his second wife find out that he’s leaving via a press conference. In my lexicon, such a man more than deserves the epithet “womanizer”. And this is someone who belongs to the party which claims to believe in “family values”…!!!!

  183. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Since there is another Spitzer thread, I feel free to use the rest of this one for a little troll whacking with Tracy2.

I ask again, Tracy, would you care to elaborate on how you concluded that my screen name is an oxymoron? Or are you simply going to hit and run?

I hear you breathing that oxygen.
    Tracy?
    Post 222?

  187. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Which simply leaves the conclusion that you are a moron breathing oxygen.

Wouldn’t that read better as “a moron WASTING oxygen”, PLC?

  188. The Republic of Stupidity says:

In your quest to provoke a fight, you made youself look very stupid, as usual.

    Comment by Southern Man — March 10, 2008 @ 4:07 pm

Just an unsuccessful attempt on joe’s part to lower himself to your level.

Frankly, he’d need a diving bell to do that.

  189. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Tracy, do you care to really elaborate, not just repeat yourself? Here’s a debate hint: tell me HOW the terms “patriotic”, “liberal”, and “Christian” do not go together logically, thus being a term deserving the description “oxymoron”. Then, perhaps, we can get to how I “don’t talk like one” and determine whether you mean “patriotic”, “liberal”, or “Christian” and exactly what I have posted is antithetical to any of those traits that I claim for myself, without, by the way, need of your permission or approval.

  190. texaslady says:

#231 – Tracy2 – Surely you can find someone other than Bill Clinton to continually bring up no matter what the subject matter is.

NoMoreBush – Just read up on Netherlands crime. The crime is being brought in by East Europeans and Russians. Again, things were doing fine until the drug bosses wanted more. Sound like an administration we know ?

  191. Shayne says:

Bill Clinton was caught going to a prostitute? Wow, this idiot troll knows something none of the rest of us know. Who would have thunk it?

  195. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Fast forward to him getting caught with whores, it has been rumored that she threatened to kill him if he steps down. You see Joe, she is embarassed. Just like Hillary was embarassed, Mrs. Vitter is as well, and probably giving Sen. Vitter the same advice Hillary gave Bill.
    Comment by Southern Man

Ok this troll is making absolutely no sense. If Mrs. Vitter was embarrassed by what her husband had done, it would make sense for her to encourage him to resign and get out of the limelight. Refusing to resign simply keeps him in the limelight as is happening right here.

  196. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Not all Patriots were Christian, Jefferson for example was a Deist; however, most Patriots were Christan.

  201. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Tracy, since you only responded to the first half of my post at 3:05, you must be most upset with that. It is not unChristian to point out that these republicanic leaders engaged in extramarital affairs. As for the second half of my post, maybe the “wanna-be women” part was a bit non-Christian but it is not un-Christian as Christ called the Pharisees out on their hypocrisy by calling them snakes, vipers, and fools. So, I amend my post to be more Christ-like as follows:

    LOL! Frank M, Tracy2, Guiliani, Coulter, …

Hypocrites, vipers, and fools – and republicans all.

BTW, “Christian” does not mean “perfect”, at least to a those of us who are not arrogant, holier-than-thou, Christian Pharisees. I frequently admit and apologize for my wrongs.

  202. Leftside Annie says:

Um, is it my imagination, or have our trolls taken an extra hit of stupid today…?

I mean, come ON – David Vitter didn’t resign because his wife threatened to kill him….?!?

Good grief. That’s a whole extra-crispy bucket o’ stupid right there.

  203. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

And Tracy, it wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that your comments were thoroughly trounced by me and others that you got on your high-horse and tried to attack us personally? Your “oxymoron” comment came almost a half hour after my 3:05 post, after your nonsense about sexscapades being solely a Democratic problem was completely debunked.

  204. Leftside Annie says:

Tracy2 – to use an old cliche: People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

In other words, you are not a Christian, Tracy, or you’d be changing YOUR judgemental, abusive behavior to conform with Jesus’ teachings.

You and your evil kind have claimed “Christianity” as your sole province for far too long.

Now, we’re taking it back. Deal with it.

  205. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

And Tracy, are you a Christian? If so, then I wonder why you continue to pour salt into Clinton’s wounds (both of them) rather than forgive them? If not, why do you get to comment on my Christianity?

  206. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

And Tracy, how would you characterize your first post of this thread:

Does BJ Clinton still have his law license?
    Comment by Tracy2 — March 10, 2008 @ 2:33 pm

    insulting?
    name-calling?

  207. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Morals for the most part are absolute.

    Comment by Tracy2 — March 10, 2008 @ 7:30 pm

That is odd. “For the most part” Seems sort of realitive. The ones you think are sort of absolute, from where do they arrive?

  222. belac says:

Morals for the most part are absolute.

    Comment by Tracy2 — March 10, 2008 @ 7:30 pm

Morals are for the most part personal… the term refers to a person’s inner compass for guiding behavior and it is by no means absolute.

What we have here is an ethical violation- Ethics are rules that society agrees on to guide behavior.

Mr. Spitzer may have no moral objection to patronizing prostitutes and just because you or I might that doesn’t compel him to change his MORAL code. But as a public figure and a crusader against prostitution Mr. Spitzer had an ETHICAL obligation NOT to patronize prostitutes… and it appears he failed… just as Mr. Bush had an ETHICAL obligation to reveal that not all the intelligence he was receiving pointed to Iraq possessing WMD’s… wait, that’s off topic?
I thought we were allowed to bring up a President’s ethical lapses whenever convenient Tracy. Doesn’t that fit right in with your moral code?

  223. belac says:

BTW Tracy- the first post is EXTREMELY on topic…
PS did you read Clarke’s book yet?
I read “The Cell” and I have to say, Clarke’s take impressed me as more authoratative… since he was the Anti-terrorism expert and all.

  224. belac says:

Most common morals have been shared by may civilizations thru out human history. I don’t think I need to spell them out….do I?

    Comment by Tracy2 — March 10, 2008 @ 7:59 pm

You may have to, yes. As slavery was pretty universally accepted by most civilizations throughout human history, I find it morally objectionable and ethically indefensible…

The Victorian English had little problem with married men visiting prostitutes, neither did the Han dynasty in China, neither did most of human civilization come to think of it, I also find it morally objectionable but hey, that’s just me….

  225. dbadass says:

Yes yes you do if you wish but I have not asked you to list the morals you wish to claim are absolute or those you think are not. I asked from where these alleged moral absolutes arise. How have our morals been degraded in your own subjective view? Do you think the changing morality which evolved as related to environmental stewardship. gender equity, racial equality, and labor rights have been a set back to the “good old days”? How ’bout some of that biblical stuff. You know the sacrifices, honor killing, and all. Good stuff gone by the wayside?

  226. belac says:

Those which we all share, or most of do, is what makes the U.S. a country of laws able to withstand any BS moral relativism that some what us all to be subjects to. It’s a rejected practice.
    Comment by Tracy2 — March 10, 2008 @ 8:11 pm

Again, you are referring to ethics, not morals.
See #290 for a response to the idea that relativism and rationalizing are a new concept.

  227. belac says:

I am working on it but it’s very hard to read something that is so blantantly partisian.

    Comment by Tracy2 — March 10, 2008 @ 8:13 pm

Clarke is a Republican appointed by Reagan- how is that blatantly partisan? Or did you mean biased to the right?

  228. dbadass says:

I believe the claim was “most”

To paraphrase Bill Clinton — because they can.

BTW, there ain’t no such thing as free.

  232. dbadass says:

BTW, there ain’t no such thing as free.

    Comment by Zooey — March 10, 2008 @ 9:27 pm

True enough. I may be cheap but I’m not free

  233. belac says:

Actually, The death penalty, or as I call it state sanctioned murder, remains ethically acceptable to most people in this culture and in most civilizations throughout history. As does theft, in the form of state sanctioned usury rates at money lenders and eminent domain for developers, both of which have recently been declared legal and ethical by our Supreme Court- yet I find both morally objectionable.
I’m curious as to what you believe is the degradation of our “morals” (sic) since (most) murder and theft are sanctioned… I fear what you mean is acceptance of homosexuality and other alternative lifestyles. The sad news for you is that those are also things that have long been not only considered moral but also ethical. For examples see the Romans, the Greeks, etc.

  234. dbadass says:

So the Vatican thinks failure to properly steward the planet is immoral. So would environmental ethics be one of those absolute morals or one of those BS PS realitive morals? Careful on this one, considering what the punishment for sloathism used to be back in those morally righteous “good old days”

  235. belac says:

The point is, tracy2, that the difference between what I find morally objectionable and what you find morally objectionable can be huge… that doesn’t mean that either of us is fundamentally wrong or even ethically challenged. There can be serious disagreements about matters of morals that don’t rise to the level of an ethical crisis… I eat meat but I know several principled vegetarians and vegans, I can even see the point they raise ethically, I just haven’t incorporated that into my own unique moral structure yet.
I may someday, that doesn’t mean that my morals are slipping or that I am any more subject to moral ‘relativism’ than I was before… all morals are relative. All ethics are relative, we often agree on what we find objectionable and wrong, but that doesn’t make morals and ethics any less relative…
If aliens landed tomorrow they may be horrified that we in this culture worship an act of torture (the crucifixion) with sick and twisted re-enactments of the moment of death in our ceremonies (This is my body, which is for you… This is my blood, which is for you…) taken out of context it’s rather disturbing, isn’t it?
That’s why it’s so important to try to understand other people’s morals in context, to try and relate- see, it’s not so bad to be relative…

  236. dbadass says:

If aliens landed tomorrow they may be horrified that we in this culture worship an act of torture (the crucifixion) with sick and twisted re-enactments of the moment of death in our ceremonies

  237. belac says:

aww… thanks dbadass… and thank you too mary…

  238. belac says:

I could easily say that simply putting someone in prison and depriving them of their freedom is cruel and inhumane, so your examples are very narrow opinions of two instances. It’s strictly based on YOUR relative morals and ethics.

    Comment by Tracy2 — March 11, 2008 @ 12:43 pm

Tracy- that’s my point… all morals are relative and it’s not always a bad thing…
Just like your insistence that Clarke is left of center. He’s a Republican who initially HATED Clinton, like you… but because he has grown to fear and despise Bush more he is now “left of center” – that’s you SUBJECTIVE and RELATIVE view of his work…
An objective view would place him right of center- Republican, appointed by Reagan, votes conservative, etc.
And I meant “….and eminent domain for developers” The Supreme Court case established that eminent domain could be used to claim private land and give it to other private developers to increase tax revenue… that’s theft to me. I’m not against emminent domain for the public good, i.e. roads, schools, parks, etc. Just against using it to develop malls and casinos…

  239. belac says:

    Tracy-
Am I gonna hafta check this thread for the rest of time?
The Supreme Court is part of the Government, I’ll grant you that… but in this particular case the emminent domain clause was not invoked for the government’s benefit but for a private developer… You see we have a government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” but lately it’s been a Government for the rich, by the rich and of the Rich… and that’s wrong. In my subjective moral view but also in the stated ethical codes of our country- ie The Constitution.

  240. belac says:

Are you trying to falsely claim that the mandated transfer of private land from private owners to richer developers isn’t an incredible twisting of the ‘original intent’ of the eminent domain clause? (Don’t you guys just love original intent?)
I think your home would generate more tax revenue as a drive-thru, I’m thinking ‘Jack in the Box’ would be good for your community. Naturally I will pay for you to be relocated to a government housing institution in the city where you live- think of the convenience! You’ll have A BRAND NEW HOME and the community will have all that tax revenue and a ‘Jack in the Box’
Of course- if you were just renting then your just screwed- sorry. You can still work at the ‘Jack in the Box”…

  241. belac says:

Ahh, but the gopvernment is doing it for the developers… mind you, I’m not letting the government off the hook, I think they were wrong to do this, but to try and argue that this isn’t a gross misinterpretation of the emminent domain clause is silly. And to continue to argue that because the governemnt did it and the Supreme court okayed it and therefore the developer has no “power” or “blame” in this situation is also silly.
The Government shouldn’t have taken the land to give to developers, that’s what I’m saying.
Emminent domain is not always a bad thing however, sometimes it is in the public’s best interest to see land developed for the publics use…

  242. batteries says:

If the Governor can recover from this, that’s fine, but this may cost him a second term.
