On his radio show last week, right-wing pundit Glenn Beck mocked ThinkProgress for noting that he recently asked controversial pastor John Hagee if Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “might be the Antichrist.” On his CNN Headline News show yesterday, Beck again attacked “liberal hacks who are disguised as journalists” and brought on Noel Sheppard of Newsbusters to go after ThinkProgress. Watch it:
UPDATE: Beck and Sheppard also attacked ThinkProgress’s coverage on Beck’s radio show today.
Transcript:
NOEL SHEPPARD, ASSOCIATE EDITOR, NEWSBUSTERS.ORG: Well, I Googled “Glenn Beck,” “Obama” and “Antichrist,” and I got 744,000 hits. Now, that doesn`t mean that there`s been 744,000 articles already written about this. That`s a little bit nuts.
BECK: Yes.
SHEPPARD: But it is somewhat disturbing to imagine that many Google hits…
BECK: Right.
SHEPPARD: … incorporating your name, Obama and the Antichrist.
BECK: Right.
SHEPPARD: How does it feel to be a bigot? It`s amazing.
BECK: It feels pretty predictable. It feels pretty — I`m used to being a conservative.
SHEPPARD: Well, and the beauty is you did predict it.
BECK: Yes, I know.
SHEPPARD: So that`s what`s wonderful about all of this.
BECK: So you also looked at the word count. And I find this incredibly fascinating. Tell me about the word count.
SHEPPARD: Yes. I mean, basically what happened to you, Glenn, is you got cherry picked. And what that means is the question that you asked Pastor Hagee had a total of 80 words in it.
Well, what Think Progress did is they transcribed 21 words. And what`s interesting is they even missed a couple of important words in the little snippet that they took, if I can share with you.
BECK: Wow. Yes.
SHEPPARD: You had said, “There are people — and they said this about Bill Clinton — that actually believe he might be the Antichrist.”
BECK: Right.
SHEPPARD: Well, they transcribed that as, “There are people — they say about Bill Clinton he might be the Antichrist.”
BECK: Yes. Well…
SHEPPARD: So they took out “that actually believe,” which radically changes the whole context of the joke you were making.
BECK: No. No. Please.
1-800-WAH-WAHH…. another fake conservative babbling about what? yep nuthin.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:39 amDon’t like what we post here?
Then I suggest you dial 1-800-EAT-SHIT.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:40 amWOW! Two mentions by Beck in just a couple of days. TP is prime time !
Always said that you can tell a lot about a person by who their enemies are.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:42 am“…Disguised as journalists” says the completely inept, incompetent, fear-mongering, racist, bigoted, social misfit, Glenn Beck?
March 11th, 2008 at 10:43 amSHEPPARD: How does it feel to be a bigot? It`s amazing.
BECK: It feels pretty predictable. It feels pretty — I`m used to being a conservative.
Beck just equated being a conservative to being a bigot!
March 11th, 2008 at 10:45 amFreudian slip, p’haps?
Note to Beck:
March 11th, 2008 at 10:47 amYou’ve issued the challenge. We’re not going anywhere. We’re not hiding. Come aboard and let’s “talk”, shall we? That is, if you’ve got the guts.
As you would say over some fine BBQ – You can’t fix stupid…
March 11th, 2008 at 10:47 amBigotry is a requirement for being an american conservative. Along with stupidity, misogyny, homophobia, racism, and a a predeliction for mass-murder.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:48 amSHEPPARD: How does it feel to be a bigot? It`s amazing.
BECK: It feels pretty predictable. It feels pretty — I`m used to being a conservative.
Says so much with so little.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:48 ami had the same comment DRxJ… ha!
hey, TP did you thank him for that plug?
March 11th, 2008 at 10:48 ambeautiful looking website, btw…
Hey, Beck! GSY (Go Snark Yourself).
Yup, you sure aren’t “disguised as a journalist”. You have your integrity, don’t you, pant-load? With you, we get what we see — a pathetic, shallow, ignorant, petty, whiny little rant-jockey.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:49 amSHEPPARD: So they took out “that actually believe,†which radically changes the whole context of the joke you were making.
BECK: No. No. Please.

When did Beck become a comedian? Why is it that whenever these neocons make these slanderous remarks, they are always “just joking?”
The reality is that Beck is not a comedian and his remarks were never intended to be considered to be jokes.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:50 amOnly an imbecile like Glenn Speck (of shit) could believe he’s qualified to determine who and what constitutes a journalist/journalism when he’s a loser radio/television host and a know-nothing conservative political commentator ; and not a very good one at that………
March 11th, 2008 at 10:51 amA sampling of the razor-wit of Beck:
“Think Progress is the first that picked this up on the blog. They’re like, Glenn Beck thinks that maybe Media Matters then picked up the story and put a Glenn Beck think maybe and then they cut and pasted and put it in the TelePrompTer for Keith Olbermann: Glenn Beck thinks maybe he’s the worst person in the world!
And some people actually enjoy listening to the babble of an under-medicated schizo?
There’s no accounting for some individuals’ tastes.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:52 amI recently “googled” Jack Johnson, the great African American boxer of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. White America at that time was so afraid of him (especially his affection towards white women), that they eagerly sought a “great white hope” to put him make in his supposed “place”. They failed.
I imagine Bleck as being born a few hundred years too late. A bigot who wants others to do his racist fighting.
Meanwhile, seriously, who is this Glenn Beck character? Is he of any importance?
March 11th, 2008 at 10:54 amWhat is it about conservatives and their need to pretend they’re victims?
March 11th, 2008 at 10:55 amThat’s funny, I remember TP including the video – which is more than Faux News does when it wants to butcher a “quote.”
And I watched the video – you conveniently said you “received alot of email on this” before you asked the question therefore implying that “it’s the people that want to know” therefore deflecting any focus on yourself.
And you, sir, were not making any joke.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:55 am“Is he of any importance?”
Comment by DRxJ — March 11, 2008 @ 10:54 am
No.
But he is *another* good reason to boycott CNN.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:56 am“…and brought on Noel Sheppard of Newsbusters to go after ThinkProgress”
———————————————
OMG — Noel Sheppard is after us! Run! Hide! Take cover!
sarc/off
Please forgive me if I don’t panic sufficiently…
March 11th, 2008 at 10:57 amSheppard has a point. I hate to say it. I really do. Cause Beck is a terrible person, but Sheppard is right. You guys cherry picked the quote, most definitely. I think that’s odd. Beck says lots of horrible things – why bother being all clever with something?
March 11th, 2008 at 10:59 amHAH!
Let them eat Snark!
March 11th, 2008 at 11:00 amSo how much did TP have to pay for the listing on Glen Becks little horrershow?
We want to know!
March 11th, 2008 at 11:03 amSheppard has a point. I hate to say it. I really do. Cause Beck is a terrible person, but Sheppard is right. You guys cherry picked the quote, most definitely. I think that’s odd. Beck says lots of horrible things – why bother being all clever with something?
Comment by vandrop — March 11, 2008 @ 10:59 am
Yeah poor Beck and Sheppard, they’re just misunderstood. It must be true because Sheppard told you it was right?
March 11th, 2008 at 11:08 amOooo! A screenshot on The Glenn Beck show starring Glenn Beck? That’s like NATIONAL TELEVISION!
My snarky comments must be getting loads of new traffic – I’d better look my best.

March 11th, 2008 at 11:09 am21:
March 11th, 2008 at 11:10 amNo they didn’t.
As with most media oriented TP posts, they included the whole video clip.
‘Cherry picking”
“Out of context”
“A joke”
Pernicious nonsense, run out everytime a right wing attack is launched.
Hey TRoS, snark me? No snark you!
March 11th, 2008 at 11:10 amA joke tells a story along a certain line and then, suddenly, takes an unexpected turn by way of a parallel logic, language, or circumstance.
Beck’s comment about Obama in the form of the question to Hagee is consistent with Beck’s overall line about Obama and there was no unexpected turn. Thus, there was no joke.
If Beck was TRYING to be a comedian, then he needs some professional help. As a psychologist, I would try but I don’t take hopeless cases. (Now, that’s a joke.)
March 11th, 2008 at 11:12 amI only get 163,000 hits when I Google “Glenn Beck,†“Obama“”Antichristâ€

March 11th, 2008 at 11:12 amBeck admits to being a conservative and everybody know conservatives “don’t do funny”. Hey Glenn why don’t you call Tucker, pretty soon you’ll both have all afternoon to meet at the tavern and cry in your beer.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:13 am25: sometimes the quotes are cut a little close on TP. Yes the entire quote is on the video, but the crybabies do have a small point. This edit does kind of change the context.

March 11th, 2008 at 11:15 amI heard this Glen Beck person once while channel surfing…but I couldn’t listen to him more than one minute. He is both vile and an idiot.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:17 amYou guys cherry picked the quote, most definitely. -Vandrop
I cherry picked nothing, please dont confuse the repliers with the creators of the post. Secondly I said from the beginning that Beck isn’t worth listening to because he only wants to create controversy.
Hes not worth the time trouble and effort, let him continue to babble on and when no one replys to him they sillier he will look.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:17 amEvery time I Google Glenn Speck , I get the shits ; not hits ……….
March 11th, 2008 at 11:19 amAs for Becks show I find that its boring, humorless and uninformative.

March 11th, 2008 at 11:19 amBeck has a difficult time deciding just who is the antichrist. So far he has suggested; Brian Williams, Bea Arthur, Angelina Jolie, and then settled on Hillary Clinton back 2006. His biblical knowledge is astounding.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:20 amSHEPPARD: How does it feel to be a bigot? It’s amazing.
BECK: It feels pretty predictable. It feels pretty — I’m used to being a conservative.
I like how Sheppard and Beck here admit that conservatism = bigotry. What’s more, they seem to fully approve of the label, even enjoy it. “It’s amazing,” says Sheppard. “It feels pretty,” says Beck.
Glenn, it’s nice that you find such beauty in your bigotry. To the rest of the civilized world, however, it’s not so “pretty.” It’s downright ugly, in fact.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:21 amvandrop’s got a point… should’ve used “…” in that thread, TP…
not everybody can play the videos…
but this is what is posted:
There are people — they say this about Bill Clinton — he might be the Antichrist. Odds that Barack Obama is the Antichrist?
no quotation marks!
the best part of all this is beck admitting that “it feels pretty … being a conservative” and a bigot…

I’m so confused.
March 11th, 2008 at 11:48 amI can’t believe how easy it is to get Beck to do EXACTLY what we want!
All we have to do is mention his name, and he’s frothing at the mouth like a mad dog.
BTW, I googled “Beck + crap” and got over 100K hits.
Hey, TP, do a thread on Michael Savage/Weiner. Let’s see if he takes the bait too!

March 11th, 2008 at 12:21 pmYes Bilbo! And it appears that Sheppard answers his own question (that’s it’s an amazing feeling to be a bigot).
Okay, off topic, since I was gone for 10 days recently, ya’ll are going to have to ’splain to me what all this “Hussein” and “snark” stuff is ’bout.
March 11th, 2008 at 12:40 pmDRxJ,
Hussein: we’re adding “Hussein” to our names in solidarity with Obama and the attacks the wingnuts have made because of his middle name
Snark: one night of foolishness on a dead thread, thinking of all the ways to use the word “snark” in common sayings, movie titles, TV show titles, etc.
Both of these bits of goofiness really shut the trolls up.
So, “snark it like you’ve got it”

March 11th, 2008 at 1:29 pmthat’s why TP and MM play the ENTIRE A-V portion of the segment! because it takes TIME to transcribe every segment. and who has time for that?!

March 11th, 2008 at 1:57 pmBeck and his lackey attacks TP for shortening his quote? Ok, sure – they did shorten it – but they also included a video section that included the entier question and the answer from Hagee (”No way”). The fact that Beck was “laughing” was also quite clear in the video posted on TP, so each of his criticism of the initial report are invalid.
The following day Media Matters also reported on his comment and they didn’t just “Cut and Paste” what TP had said, they did their own report – used the full 80 word quote and included the entire Hagee interview as a video and transcript.
Nothing in either of these reports were inaccurate, and any visitors to either TP or MM were certain given enough information to make their own independant determination as to whether what Beck asked was “A Joke” or not, so basically Beck is complaining, in effect, that he was quoted correctly.
What a crime, eh?
Beck’s claim is essentially that he was trying to make fun of the people who would dare to call Obama the “Anti-Christ”, but that isn’t funny when he’s also being called some kind of “Stealth Muslim” who won’t say the Pledge of Allegience, or Sing the National Antem, was sworn in on the Koran, went to a Madrassa in Indonesia and whose wife apparently is some kind of closet “America Hater” whom Bill O’Reilly might have to create a “Lynching Party”.
All of these are lies, and there are some people who “Actually Believe” them – but none of that is funny.

March 11th, 2008 at 2:13 pmWho cares? Test patterns and some infomercials get better ratings than Beck’s silly little television show. Headline News is barely a step above public access anyway. TP definitely needs a better right wing nemesis.
March 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pmMcCain should choose Glenn Beck as his running mate. Then the Republicans could vote for two hate mongering pieces of crap on the same ticket.
Hillary Rodham Delafield
March 11th, 2008 at 2:41 pmI’m sure ThinkProgress is grateful to Beck for all of the increased web traffic he has sent this way.
March 11th, 2008 at 3:53 pmThanks Beck, you moron.
Why did CNN repudiate right wing nut Bill Cunningham at the same time they employ ring wing nut Glenn Beck?
Beck is much more offensive.
You people inevitably know how to read and for the most part type, but you really have to quit waiting in the nest for mommy to regurgitate a bunch of crap to fill your brains. Why not do a little search and find the truth for a change. Its nice to watch the little light box for your daily table of contents and talking points but for once in your lives take a stab at individuality and think for yourselves. I promise you, you’d be better off doing that than trusting ANY single media source, including this one.
March 11th, 2008 at 3:58 pm“Us people” know how to do exactly that. In this case, Beck – as usual – is completely full of crap. We have the full video here and the transcript via Media Matters. He tried to launch yet another baseless Obama smear, and at the same time claim he’s somehow innocent in the process. Yeah, right.

March 11th, 2008 at 8:55 pmSHEPPARD: How does it feel to be a bigot? It`s amazing.
No, it’s not. Not to anyone paying attention.
BECK: It feels pretty predictable. It feels pretty — I`m used to being a conservative.
It should feel “predictable”. Beck’s pretty much as much a racist tool as they come. He should be “used to” it; he’s been that way all along.

Cheers,
March 11th, 2008 at 9:06 pmWow, It’s hard to believe that there are that many people who really think like this. It just defies common sense.
It’s clear that the people making the comments here didn’t listen to the complete audio or see the complete video. If you did it would be painfully clear to you that Glenn was being sarcastic / joking in his question and that he was indeed making fun of the ‘whack jobs’ that actually think that Obama could be the anti-christ. Hearing this segment in it’s entirety would 100% clear this up for any reasonable person, weather or not you agree with him on any issue.
DRxJ – that was no fraudian slip when glenn said he was use to being a biggot as he’s a conservative. As the comments here demonstrate, as soon as someone says they’re a conservative, the media, liberals in general pretty much just say that’s what you are. If you think our country should actually enforce the law and protect our southern border, you have to be a racist right? If you don’t want to have a communist/socialist state so therefore don’t want Obama to be president it has to be because he’s black, not becuase you disagree with his policies. It’s easy to throw people under the bus and call them a racist instead of having a cival conversation about facts.
And just to get back to this whole story. Glenn’s comments were clearly taken out of context to make it look like something it wasn’t. It was what I explained above but they found a creative way to make it look like it’s a right-wing racist conversation. Come on, I would love to sit and watch it with anyone who could say it wasn’t clearly a joke and this TP story wasn’t twisting the facts to push an agenda. This a common and unfortunate tactic of the mainstream (i.e.liberal) media.
Billy Hill – My mouth was actually gaping when I was reading your post until it took a moment to realize you were using that wonderful comedic tool, sarcasm. Great point.
March 12th, 2008 at 2:29 pm#5 DRxJ – Hey, moron, they were being sarcastic.
#12 dim wit – Once again, your username characterizes you perfectly. Beck’s show (both radio and tv) are a mix of comedy and serious issues. He’s been saying so for years. The intro to his radio show says “the fusion of entertainment and enlightenment”, dope.
#16 Frosty Cupcakes – What are you even talking about?
#27 – You might want to reference that you cut and pasted your first paragraph directly out of either wikipedia or the dictionary. What’s the deffinition for SARCASM? Because that’s what Beck’s comment was.
#32 – He wasn’t creating controversy, he was making fun of idiots who believe this crap about Obama being the antichrist. He’s not worth the time and effort which is why you posted about him? You people talk in circles constantly, it’s comical to read.
Once again, your reactions make me feel like I’m reading quotes from a 7 year old calling a bully names. I’m surprised I didn’t hear anyone call Beck a meany poopy-head.
March 12th, 2008 at 10:01 pmWould this be the same Glenn Beck who referred to Hurricane Katrina survivors as ’scumbags’ and initially decided that Hillary Clinton was the Antichrist? The same Glenn Beck who uses CNN airtime news to come on to Dina Sansing in the most repulsive pass since Bill O’Reilly’s falafel beat poetry? Backed by Noel ‘Global Warming Is Just A Liberal Myth Because My Exxon Financial Backers Tell Me So’ Sheppard?
Would this be the same Noel Sheppard whose idea of substantive research for an article is watching Smiley O’Reilly? The guy whose claim that global warming is a liberal myth is founded on a ludicrous argument about a Swedish tree that has as much bearing on the *actual* global warming discussion the rest of us are having as, say, the number of pirates in the world does? The guy who whined that the so-called ‘liberal media’ were ignoring the Medal of Honor given to Michael Murphy, stating that “according to LexisNexis, outside of New York’s local papers such as Newsday, the Daily News, and the New York Post, no major daily bothered reporting Lt. Murphy receiving the Medal of Honor,” when in point of fact it had been reported by the Associated Press, the Cincinnati Post, Commercial Appeal (Memphis), Daily Press (Newport News, VA), Denver Post, Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Kansas City Star, Los Angeles Times, Mobile Register, Myrtle Beach Sun-News, Rocky Mountain News, Times Union (Albany, NY) and The Washington Post? That Noel Sheppard?
You know, not to let the facts stand in the way of an accusation of liberal media bias or anything.
