Today, lawmakers took to the Senate floor and blasted President Bush’s wasteful spending. To fully illustrate the impact, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), brought up a chart showing the budget plans of President Clinton versus the budget formulated by Bush. He concluded that by squandering Clinton’s government surplus, Bush has cost the country $7.7 trillion:
This next chart illustrates the value of the differences between the budget landscape planned by President Clinton and the one created by President Bush. As you can see, the difference between the two is a staggering $7.7 trillion. This number represents the fiscal harm that President Bush has inflected on our nation. This number is the Bush debt. [...]
Like most concepts of enormous size, this amount takes some thought to comprehend. $7.7 trillion is $25,000 owed by every adult or child in the United States.
Watch it:
The federal budget deficit is currently at “$87.7 billion so far this budget year, double the $42.2 billion imbalance recorded during the same period in 2007.”
Additionally, five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, national unemployment is going up. Between December 2006 and December 2007, the national unemployment rate increased by 13.6 percent in seasonally adjusted terms, from 4.4 to 5.0 percent. Additionally, 68 percent of the American public believes that redeployment from Iraq would help fix the country’s economic woes.
Transcript:
WHITEHOUSE: When President Bush took over, leading economists were debating the consequences of this great nation being debt-free. Standing tall in the world with no claim on it by foreign powers. But this President made a differen choice. Instead of keeping our nation on the path to economic security and prosperity, to new investments in our health care system, our students, our seniors, and our veterans, the President who called for responsibility squandered away the surpluses he inherited, mortgaged away our children and grandchildren’s futures, and compromised the quality of working Americans’ lives.
How can we measure the magnitude of the harm done to our economy and our people done by this administration’s decision to deviate from the responsible policies of President Clinton?
The first chart shows the budget plans of President Clinton as he left office and the budget formulated by President Bush. As you can see, the Clinton line — represented in blue based on his levels of taxation and spending — has budget surpluses every single year of this decade. In contrast, the Bush budget line — represented in red — has deep record-setting deficits in every year after 2001.
Just sittin' around drinkin' with the rest of the guys
Six rounds bought, and I bought five
Spent the groceries and half the rent
Like fourteen dollars and twenty seven cents.

March 11th, 2008 at 10:39 pmhttp://www.alternet.org/story/57180/
Saying that the majority of the country's economic gains in recent years have gone to the top 1 percent of the income ladder understates the trend. You have to cut the pie into even smaller slices to get the full picture. Because, while the bottom half of the top 1 percent of the income distribution have done far better than the average wage slaves, it is a smaller slice still -- the top .01 percent -- that has grabbed most of the gains, seeing an impressive 250 percent increase in income between 1973 and 2005 from an economy that's grown by 160 percent.
An analysis by economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez gives us the best perspective of what's going on for everyone else. They found that despite several periods of healthy growth between 1973 and 2005, the average income of all but the top 10 percent of the income ladder -- nine out of ten American families -- fell by 11 percent when adjusted for inflation. For three decades, economic growth in the United States has gone first and foremost to building today's modern Gilded Age. The recipients of those gains don't care about a fully funded Social Security system or a healthy Medicare program -- they don't need them.
March 11th, 2008 at 10:39 pmWhy should I pay for bailing out the banks Billy? Isnt that a 6% problem?

"If the federal government was a private corporation and the same report came out this morning, our stock would be dropping and some people would be talking about whether the company’s management directors needed a major shake-up".
“The federal government’s total liabilities,†Walker explained, “translates into a de facto mortgage of about $455,000 for every American household and there’s no house to back that mortgage. In other words, our government has made a whole lot of promises that, in the long run, it cannot possibly keep without huge tax increases.â€

Mark Foley rapes kids while in office no problem. Larry Craig looks for sex from men in the men's room not problem. But Spitzer hiring a hooker with his own money is against Republican Christian Family Values.
All this shows how Bush/Cheney got in office twice as Americans follow like blind mice. Now when Bush leaves office the US Treasury Debt will be 15 Trillion dollars and of course the GOP will blame it on Bill Clinton and Americans will believe it. March 11th, 2008 at 11:50 pmFor a not so bleak post, we definitely do need to reform things and get the dollar in order, then business harming the public interest (it's not the invisible hand if monetary punishments are circumvented, as business has gotten to), then hopefully energy and the environment.
Let's be honest about what's happening and why Bush would even care about 20 years from now... the Republicans did not like the hard times after Vietnam, Watergate, and the oil crisis. They had to figure out how to build up "defense" and cut taxes, so Reagan Conservatism did cut into those 50% and higher tax rates. Now if the USSR had just stayed intact...
So they needed a new boogeyman, the War on Terror. Not a war to bring a sovereign state to new political terms through force, but war against an idea. Not a dedicated effort to read e-mails about Bin Ladin attacking America, but almost. Not a dedicated effort to inspect incoming vessels or address the underlying motivation to extremism, which would help mankind and those who would never use terrorism to boot, but a massive occupation of an anti-terrorist, anti-extremist, anti-Islamic state in Iraq that wouldn't play nice with us. Not a pro-terrorist state like Saudi Arabia, they give us oil and nice words and stuff.
There isn't really an end to it, unless every human is unable to rebel at all. But since there are bad people who don't like us, and there will be, we can rally against them.

March 11th, 2008 at 11:56 pmHere is another great way to look at how bad Dubya has done. During the 8 year Reagan presidency the Dow Jones doubled (about 11% growth in value per year). During the 4 year Bush 1 presidency it went up 50% (about 11% growth in value per year). During the awful business hating democratic 8 year presidency of Bill, the Dow Jones tripled (about 22% per year).
During the Harvard MBA educated Dubya's 7 years the Dow has gone up 20%. Bringing a return to investors of 2.7% per year.

There won't be $1 for anything else. No military. No Education. No welfare.
Both Obama and Hillary have proposed $500B of new annual spending, and raising taxes on the rich from 35% to 39.6% on the rich won't cover it. They'll have to raise taxes on the middle class, because that's where the money is.
But neither Obama or Hillary are honest enough to tell you that.
And Bill said he was going to cut your taxes in his 1992 campaign, then he raised your taxes when elected. Expect the same from Hillary. Wink-wink.

Don't know what to think, Jane. All those injuries? Ouch. I'm afraid Beltran is going to be off all year. We're a team in transition, Jane. We're going to look different next yr.
But this yr? I have no expectations. The starters look better, potentially. The BP has been good so far. But the position players? Sheez... it is nice to see the bench players doing so well. But how many times have we seen a player like Pagan smoke the ball in exhibition games, then head for the Mendoza Line come Opening Day?
My hope is that the pitching and subs can keep us in it until Beltran, Castillo, Dlegado, and Alou are healthy. Hopefully Church will surprise (he did hit 40 doubles last yr...) and Pelfrey will have his break out yr.

House fails to override torture veto
House Democrats on Tuesday failed to overturn President Bush's veto of a bill that would have prohibited the CIA from using waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques on terrorist suspects.
The vetoed legislation would have limited the CIA to using only the 19 interrogation methods approved in the Army field manual. That guidebook bans the use of waterboarding, a technique that simulates drowning. CIA Director Michael Hayden has confirmed that the spy agency used the technique on three terrorist suspects in 2002 and 2003.
The 225-188 House roll call was 51 votes short of the two-thirds majority required to overturn a veto. Bush has vetoed seven bills during his tenure, and only once has Congress mustered the votes to override his veto.
The interrogation limits are part of a bill authorizing intelligence spending for 2008. Bush vetoed it on Saturday. It is the first intelligence authorization bill produced by Congress in three years.

In fact, please TP, report anytime a politician wants to increase spending or start a new program "and please come out against it like you do for anything Bush wants to increase spending wise".

Still, I'm sure he made a lot more in capital gains and dividends that he only paid 15% tax on, so it wasn't too bad. Then his accountant can always find plenty of tax-free bonds so he doesn't pay anything at all on those. Maybe a few more schools and libraries can close down so he can continue his tax breaks.
