McCain Attacks Bears, Twists Facts On Earmarks In Speech Against ‘Wasteful Spending’

One of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) favorite examples of government abuse is a multimillion-dollar study of the Montana grizzly bear population by the U.S. Geological Survey. In a recent campaign ad, he attacks “wasteful spending by Congress,” giving the example of “$3 million to study the DNA of bears.” On the stump, McCain goes further, joking, “I don’t know if it was a paternity issue or criminal, but it was a waste of money.”

McCain continued his mockery in a campaign appearance today. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/mccainbears4.320.240.flv]

McCain has long portrayed himself as a crusader against government “pork” such as Alaska’s notorious “Bridge to Nowhere.” McCain has mocked the bear study since 2003, when Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) allocated a $1 million earmark to the project.

His new attack on the bear project comes despite a Washington Post story yesterday digging into the actual project McCain is attacking — the USGS Northern Divide Bear Project.

As the Post explains, the project by field biologist “is focused not on the DNA of grizzly bears, but on counting them.” Before this study, the size of the population was unknown:

Grizzly bears in northwest Montana are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. But Kendall’s project — the results of which will be published soon in a scientific journal — revealed that there are more grizzlies than anyone had realized. That suggests that three decades of conservation efforts, costing tens of millions of dollars, have paid off.

A National Wildlife Federation spokesperson told the Washington Post, “Someone like McCain should be delighted, in fact. The Endangered Species Act works.”

Transcript:

I want to be President of the United States because I want to restore trust and confidence in the government, I want to secure our borders, I want to fix Medicare, I want to fix Social Security, I want to eliminate this wasteful and outrageous earmark and pork-barrel spending which has eroded the confidence of our Republican base and the confidence of all Americans in our ability to be careful stewards of your tax dollars.

By the way, my favorite in the last few years was we spent $3 million to study the DNA of bears in Montana. I don’t know if that was a paternity issue or a criminal issue. (LAUGHTER)

How about 3 million to investigate bush’s past business dealings gigi? your republican hypocrites had no problems spending 20 times that much to dig up dirt on Clinton?

  7. gummitch says:

    From the WaPo article:

But he didn’t try to block the grizzly funding by offering an amendment to remove it from the 2003 appropriations bill. And ultimately he voted for the bill.

A Senate aide to McCain said the senator objects to the way that pork — which he views as money not requested by the administration or properly authorized by Congress — is slipped into bills via add-ons and earmarks. “Senator McCain does not question the merits of these projects; it’s the process that he has a problem with,” the aide said.

In other words, he was against the bears before he was for the bears. And, hell, why let the truth get in the way of a good laugh?

  8. tombaker says:

Teddy Roosevelt, the guy that McMaverick falsely compared himself to, lobbied for the Grizzly Bear to be the symbol of our Country, and against the Bald Eagle, which he characterized as a scavenger. He also established the National Parks system that McMaverick would apparently just as soon use as a bombing range.

McMaverick is as dishonest and self-serving as a politician can come. If you can live through torture, you can live through lying to the world without braking a sweat.

  9. 5th Estate says:

    Hey, GG!

If it takes $3 million to count a few thousand bears, how much money do you think it takes to count all those illegal immigrants?
Sure that $3 million might be better spent counting illegal immigrants but as we must already be spending billions on counting them, what’s $3million between friends?

Besides bears steal our pic-a-nic baskets and ruin our back-to-nature camping trips with the mauling and the claws and the blood and stuff. SO maybe we should spend three million killing them all instead?

I miss my taxes by 5 bucks and IRS is all over me with interest and bullshit. Now I ask you, how long will we put up with this thievery and waste. Who will do anything about it? NO government program, under any circumstances can be shown to be effective. It undermines their whole ethos.

In the face of evidence that a conservation effort (liberal) has been successful, McCain, as a good Republican, must belittle the program that assembled the evidence.

True, TRoS, true, but you have to keep in mind that “good” “bad” and “mediocre” aren’t really viewed the same way by Republicans as they are by those of us in the reality-based community.

To them, if someone is loyal, they’re “good”, even if what they do to maintain that loyalty results in disaster.

By the same token, a performance that we might judge as “mediocre” or “bad” could be seen as worthy of a Presidential Medal of Honor, if the bad performance, for instance, confirmed GOP convictions about the ineffectiveness of government.

But, you see, it’s not McCain’s political principles I object to. It’s his illogical support for a ridiculous foreign policy and his abject hypocrisies on ethical issues. Pursuing the endorsement of that (bleep!) Hagee sealed the deal.

Unless, of course, you are ok with your Dear (mis)Leader’s blunders, regardless of the consequences to the nation and the world.

Because he has to symmetrise: He is a lot more comfortable being a hypocrite if he can prove to himself you are one too.

So much for the “moral values” crowd.

Grizzly Bears are almost as fun to hunt as big coastal Brown Bears. They are just a tad smaller.

To bad we can`t put old man Johnny Mclame on the endangered species list.I would not spend a dime on him or any other neocon to save from extinction.

This is amusing. We talk about everything except what really matters at a critical time in our nations’ economy. And, I for one think that maybe it is not so much the leaders of the country,or Polar Bears, or Grizzly Bears and as long as we have career politicians, we are going to have wasteful spending. Out of control gas prices are my chief concerns right now, and the media wants to entertain us with something that we have no control over anyway. Politics! We do, however, have some control on the prices of gasoline and if we worked together(Companies and Employers)we could bring the prices down considerably. We could go to a more productive 3 or 4 day work week. Wal-Mart uses this scheduling practice and proved that it increases production while using less work days in a week. Think about it! Gas prices are out of control and it is on the verg of Bankrupting us and we talk about things that are not important at this point and time. Wake Up Americans!

It’s OK to spend trillions in Iraq, but any money for science should be questioned, according to McCain, who doesn’t understand wildlife biology. DNA studies on populations of animals that are under stress (bears in Montana) are important. You must know the genetic relatedness between the different populations of a species, for management decisions. As populations of a species decline, inbreeding becomes one of the biggest threats to the survival of that species. This is money for basic science. The lack of understanding of basic science by the politicians, of both parties, is shameful.

  105. batteries says:

Teddy Roosevelt, the guy that McMaverick falsely compared himself to, lobbied for the Grizzly Bear to be the symbol of our Country, and against the Bald Eagle, which he characterized as a scavenger. He also established the National Parks system that McMaverick would apparently just as soon use as a bombing range.

McMaverick is as dishonest and self-serving as a politician can come. If you can live through asus v6000 battery, asus v6000v battery torture, you can live through lying to the world without braking a sweat.

Just like the cold war when everyone who didn’t agree with the U.S. was either a communist or a communist sympathizer. toki This poor crazy guy spent half a decade being tortured because a bunch of stupid politicians araç sorgulama were sure the NVA was in bed with the Russians (minimal help) and/or the Chinese (ancient enemy of the vietnamese). ssk sorgulama You would think he would have learned from others’ mistakes. Guess not. Republicans need an enemy. key ödemeleri This century it apparently will be all Muslims, health all of whom must be alQaeda operatives.
