On the heels of a spate of lethal bombings, the city of Baghdad “is feeling the unease of the period before violence eased partly as a result of the U.S. troop buildup, which is now coming to a close,” according to the Associated Press. “Iraqis interviewed said they were not necessarily changing their daily routines. But all said the growing bloodshed was present in their minds, clouding what had until recently been a more hopeful time.” While civilian deaths hit an low of 20 per day in January, “so far in March, that number is up to 39 daily.”
Gawd, don’t these people listen to Fred Kagan?

no, no, it’s mr. o’hanlon that will set these poor folks straight.
March 12th, 2008 at 9:08 pmThe surge is working and we’ll show you how much in another 6 months.
March 12th, 2008 at 9:14 pmJust wait until Muqtada’s cease fire extension expires in five more months – right before the election. Combine that with the economy and the price of oil and McCain doesn’t have a chance getting elected as a dog catcher.
Justifiably.

You forgot to mention that strolling in a Baghdad market is just like strolling through any county fair in Indiana in the summertime.
And don’t forget the insane deals on rugs!
March 12th, 2008 at 9:33 pmI think you left out we’re fighting them there so we don’t have to pay $3.50 a gallon here.
Oh, wait….
March 12th, 2008 at 9:34 pmThis is a must read. Funny and sad at the same time.

Don’t worry gas will soon be $4 a gallon. Diesel here is already $4.05. Who do think will pay for the increase in the shipping of goods?
March 12th, 2008 at 9:44 pmralph,I need some good Persian rugs. Do they have KBR stamped on them, you know that increases their value? ;)
I seem to remember a sustained discussion a few years back about how violence was “naturally” expected to decline during winter months in Iraq.
How much of the sustained “effectiveness” of the surge is a seasonal fluctuation? What can we expect in the months to come?
When will our men and women (and money) be coming home?
March 12th, 2008 at 9:52 pmWell, they told me if I voted for Gore gas would be $3.50. I woulda thought he’d have to win, though.
March 12th, 2008 at 9:57 pmthe F-U cycle is waxing…republican cultists need to get General Betrayus out of there quick before his most useful reputation is sullied.

Well, they told me if I voted for Gore gas would be $3.50.
So,I figured, we can do better than that! So, being the good republic that I am, I voted for Bush, see, and gas will hit $4.00 by the end of the year. See how us rethugs can beat out you democratics? And just to show you how weak you progs are, we might get it up to $5.00 a gallon! Wake up leftards!
March 12th, 2008 at 10:11 pmI guess there are some people we can’t bribe to stop causing problems..
March 12th, 2008 at 11:03 pmThank God we’ve gotten the daily number of slaughtered Iraqi’s down to a manageable 20 per day and only 600 per month, 7200 per year. I think I’m beginning to feel a victory dance coming on.
Just saying . . .
March 12th, 2008 at 11:16 pm“Iraqis interviewed said they were not necessarily changing their daily routines. But all said the growing bloodshed was present in their minds….”
wow – just think about that for a second – living day to day in an environment where “growing bloodshed” is a reality – in my daily routine, trivial stuff like traffic jams are present in my mind…how obscene that bush and his crew blatantly ignore the suffering that these people endure in the newly “liberated” iraq – enough is enough – nothing is working there – whether it is sending more troops or bribing militia to stop killing, people are dying regardless – and the one option that hasn’t been explored, redeployment, gets brushed aside with the pathetic cries of “they’ll follow us home” or “victory for al qaeda”…the wounds that bush has inflicted on iraq will never heal…makes me physically ill
March 12th, 2008 at 11:41 pmkrazeeinjun,
My exact thoughts. Twenty a day is considered low? How fucked up are we as a nation to not be horrified at that number? If it was twenty a day in DesMoines with even more injued and fleeing I’d bet American’s would give a damn.
Of course, with the near total blackout in the media on these numbers mixed with the obscenely large numbers which vary greatly helping abstract the issue I guess I’ll try and be optimistic and think most Americans are ignorant instead of cold-hearted. Doesn’t make me feel any better that our standards are so low in this country that twenty deaths a day is considered a success, torture is now an acceptable technique to use and giving up our rights is an appropriate method of protecting our “way of life.”

- Around 9:15 am, a roadside bomb targeted an American patrol at Taji near Baghdad’s north gate .No casualties reported. . .
- Around 10 am, an American patrol defused a roadside bomb at Saidiyah neighborhood (south Baghdad) near Imam Ali mosque.
- Around 10:10 am, a roadside bomb targeted an American patrol at Shaab neighborhood (north Baghdad) towards the industrial area. No casualties reported.
- Around 10:30 am, a roadside bomb targeted an American patrol near Qanat bridge(east Baghdad) .No casualties reported on the US patrol while two Iraqi people were killed and ten were injured in that incident.
March 13th, 2008 at 7:58 amSo the question remains, do we cut, run and surrender the country to the terrorists as the terrorists and left wing nuts would like, or do we continue to kill and/or capture the bastards?
Comment by good_golly — March 13, 2008 @ 8:50 am
Do it. But include the USA military and the USA GOPers and the USA contractors directly or indirectly responsible of the carnage of all Iraqis dead since 2003. You’ll end out of bullets and/or out of jail room.
March 13th, 2008 at 9:50 amTwenty dead civilians a day, and now 39 a day – that’s how we achieve our goals in Iraq, by attrition – at that rate, maybe it won’t take 100 years. Does anyone know how many people are left (alive) in Iraq (where our oil is)?
March 13th, 2008 at 12:11 pmWHAT IS THIS WE CRAP goon goofy??? You posting from Iraq???More likely sitting in your pissed soaked trousers.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:41 pmThe Iraqi’s are sooo ungrateful. And after all we’ve done to them. I meant for them.
