On Sunday, the AP reported that contractor KBR has been providing “unmonitored and potentially unsafe” water to U.S. troops in Iraq. According to a Pentagon Inspector General’s report, dozens of soldiers fell sick, suffering “skin abscesses, cellulitis, skin infections, diarrhea and other illnesses” after using the “discolored, smelly water for personal hygiene and laundry.”
In a press briefing on Monday, Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell dismissed KBR’s gross negligence. He responded by joking about how everyone knows the water in Iraq is unsafe, and advised everyone to avoid drinking it:
You know, we’ve all been to Iraq several times. Everywhere you go they make it perfectly clear that you don’t want to drink the water, so I’m a little surprised myself that this is an issue. As I understand it, the bottled water, which is what you’re supposed to be drinking in Iraq, had no issues whatsoever in the testing that was done. Evidently, there was some issue with some of the other water that was, I guess, primarily meant for washing. [...]
But I think our encouragement is always — for journalists and warfighters alike is read the signs and just drink the bottled water.
Watch it:
Morrell’s advice is useless. Troops didn’t drink the contaminated water. They used it for bathing and laundry. Does Morrell also propose that troops use bottled water for showering?
KBR has recently faced scrutiny for dodging paying more than $500 million “in federal Medicare and Social Security taxes by hiring workers through shell companies” based in the Cayman Islands. Between 2004 and 2006, KBR — previously a subsidiary of Halliburton — received more than $16 billion in government contracts.

Transcript:
Q: And with regards to the Pentagon IG report on the dirty water that was supplied to troops in Iraq by KBR, what is the secretary’s comment? What is your comment?
MR. MORRELL: I haven’t spoken to the secretary about it.
And — but still, based upon this IG report, which I think is over 14 months old or something by now, the period in question, that there’s no evidence that any of the illnesses were related to the water. So as far as we can tell, there was no widespread health risk or illness associated with the few problems that were discovered with the water system. But I think our encouragement is always — for journalists and warfighters alike is read the signs and just drink the bottled water.
If troops should just drink bottled water, what the hell are we paying KBR for, the appearance of quenching their thirst in the desert?

We're paying them to put their logo on towels. I thought everybody knew that!
March 12th, 2008 at 4:53 pmWhat are the Iraqis drinking?
March 12th, 2008 at 4:54 pmWell need to stopping paying KBR so much if we're gonna have the soldiers bathe in Evian.
March 12th, 2008 at 4:55 pmwater bottled by.....KBR with their very own logo. That's an extra charge too.
March 12th, 2008 at 4:55 pmMaybe this tool could be waterboared with KBR water. Then he can give us his opinion on it.
March 12th, 2008 at 4:55 pmthis mental midget is putting KBR and their profits in front of the soldiers.
Another reason (on a long list) that I don't support this conflict. The soldiers were wrongly put in harms way, insufficient supplies and logistics have continually plagued our soldiers and now this.
War profiteering over our soldiers. Unexceptable. Republicans, you built this and you will pay for it in lost elections and ridicule for years to come.
March 12th, 2008 at 4:57 pmjust think of the profits KBR can get. if they can bill the US $45/can of soda pop, just imagine what the price of water will be. $100/bottle +
March 12th, 2008 at 4:58 pmObviously, the troops will HAVE to use bottled water for bathing, laundry, and other hygiene chores until they can find another source of water that won't make them sick merely by coming in contact with it. Naturally, it will be expensive, but their health is important. Hopefully, the problem will be short term.
Except that the obstacle in the way of doing what's right appears to be KBR, who apparently is accountable to no one. Their mission appears to be avoid doing anything beneficial while sucking up as much taxpayer money as they can and finding ways to suck up more.
And Geoff Morrell saying the solution is to just "not drink the water" shows a level of obtuseness rivaled only by Ronald Reagan telling the unemployed that all they had to do is just "look at the want ads in the paper."

Comment by Nevar — March 12, 2008 @ 4:54 pm
The Iraqis are drinking contaminated local water and dying of cholera. They desperately need water treatment plants. Another testament to all the good we're doing for them over there.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:02 pmNotice how it is a civilian, political appointee who makes these statements. I would have asked Geoff to back up his word by having some uniformed members (General Officer, Field Grade and Enlisted) to take a microphone and agree to this. I would also ask how much money KBR received for failing to provide the promised quality in water.
Just one more sign that lesser people (military members, the poor and others) are just expendable for corporations.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:05 pmI can't think of a word filthy enough to describe these people!! In the meantime, this one will have to do:
REPUBLICANS.

March 12th, 2008 at 5:07 pmSo our troops are not smart enough to figure out not to drink tainted water? Is that what this assclown is saying?Do these friggin idiots actually think that anyone is buying what they're selling anymore?I guess our stupid paid whore-trolls and the other in-bred 19%ers might.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:07 pmDirectly from KBR's website:
KBR's values are:
Uncompromising commitment to Health, Safety and Environment
Integrity in all we do
Transparency in our business
Accountability for our work
Best in class Risk Awareness
Financial Responsibility to our stakeholders
Our mission defines what we set out to do each day.
KBR's mission is:
To safely deliver any project, any time, in any environment for the benefit of our customers, shareholders, employees and the communities we serve.
Our vision reminds each of us of what we should be striving for each day and where we ultimately want to be as a company.
KBR's vision is to be the world’s premier contractor delivering projects and services to a global marketplace.
Our track record has proven that time and again when faced with the task at hand, regardless of the challenges, we deliver the work that is expected of us. To that end, KBR’s motto or slogan is 'We Deliver'.
They have failed their own mission. This is just jibberish when seeing the actions of KBR.
Thanks Cheney.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:09 pmOh come now hellin, 5 deferment dick had NOTHING to do with those no bid contracts. He said so himself. And of course if we question it we are UN-AMERICAN TRAITORS!
March 12th, 2008 at 5:14 pmthanks for the sarc. specialist f.
I laughed out loud when I read KBR's values. Integrity, Transparency and Accountability may be something they value but they don't come close to putting them to their work practices.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:19 pmTo the Pentagon our troops are disposable humans...lack of body armor, lack of humvees that stand up to ieds, lack of care when critically injured. And why not ? Who among them have served on the front lines? And now, the most sane mind of all has been pushed out for the bootlicking Petraeus.
People, if bushco wants to invade Iran where will the troops come from? Your son or daughter ? Mine have served.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:20 pmAnd KBR just announced their new product: KBR Spring Water, just $179.99 per 16 ounce bottle.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:24 pm"We Deliver" cholera.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:24 pmNotice the undertone to the comments. It is the usual Republican slander by inuendo. Geoff implies that this is not really a serious issue. Those who are complaining really overstate the harm. Next comes the Big Lie by making a perfectly correct statement (they have bottled water that will not make them sick) and expanding it totally out of context.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:25 pmSo, if our troops are not supposed to use the KBR-supplied water, or the KBR-supplied laundry services, why are we paying so much for those contracts? I guess we can just close the KBR laundries at BIAP, Talil, and Balad, since the troops aren't supposed to use them anyway. The sad thing is, his remarks will make perfect sense to people who haven't been there and they will just keep screwing over the soldiers.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:31 pmI cannot imagine why Halliburton would give a $4M severance package to Dick Cheney when he became VPOTUS. How will they ever make that money back?
Oh, yeah.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:31 pmIt will be interesting to see how much media attention will be shown on the march on Washington starting tomorrow by Iraq Vets Against The War and other groups. I haven't heard anything about the contaminated water anywhere but here.

March 12th, 2008 at 5:33 pmMy question is where are the water quality specialists for the troops? I suspect that this vital service was contracted out to one of the friends of Bush (FOB) and the problems a direct result of the incompetent bozos who "run" the Pentagon.
When I was in Desert Storm, every unit had water quality specialists as water was one of the most precious commodities there.
"We care about the troops!", indeed.

March 12th, 2008 at 5:40 pmEach conflict has had black market for milk and meat mean't for the troops but here our government "hires" a contractor to supply and they do this to our military. When will everyone finally have enough ?
Does it at least contain antibiotics, anti-depressants and viagra like back home?

I was in Iraq in 2003, when we made the transition. We had been using 92W's at Camp Victory, and our own internal fuelers. Towards the middle of 2004 we even had our own laundry service on the BIAP. Then KBR came in and took over water supply, fueling, and laundry. They already had taken over all of the food services and most of the convoy ops prior to then. We didn't think anything of it at the time, because most of the KBR contractors are locals and we thought we would be leaving soon anyway (remember weeks, not months?) But over the past four years, they have outsourced a number of jobs the Army normally does internally. So those water purification specialists, cooks, fuelers? They are all working as MP's and Civil Affairs now.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:43 pmonly if the bottle water is supplied by halliburton and it is $5.00 per pint.
March 12th, 2008 at 5:45 pmAny of you folks worked for the government. I worked for a city, state and the feds for two different departments. if I had taken such a BS approach to contacts with the public, I would have been cashiered out quick. RePUGs don't have a clue, well yes they really do have a clue and it dismantle government and get the bottom line, over to the contractors.
I now realize why people go postal in government offices!

March 12th, 2008 at 5:58 pmJust imagine the response by Fox or Redstate if this was happening under a President Hillary. Limbaugh would have already burst into flames live on-air with spittle-flecked rage if this were occurring under a Gore administration. If this were the case under an Obama administration, Fred Barnes, Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, and Morton Kondracke would have chained themselves naked to the fence outside the White House, demanding immediate impeachment.
But with President Bush/Cheney running the show, it's crickets.

March 12th, 2008 at 6:01 pmAnyone hazard a guess what company Geoff Morrell will be working for in January '09?
March 12th, 2008 at 6:02 pmThe only positive thing about this situation is that at least it is coming out. So much of the treatment of our military in previous conflicts was kept hushed up until awhile after they came home.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:04 pmWar Profiting, the Republican way to support their bank accounts.
The guys running KBR are criminals and should be looked into immediately.
Oh, forgot, Five Deferments Dick's buddies, not going to happen.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:04 pmThe arrogance and disregard shown by KBr is astounding.
Didn't we all hear from the water experts who said troops were becoming ill from just showering!? Any open cut, sore, wound, would allow contamination to enter the bloodstream.
Dante will have to add another level to his inferno for these guys.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:06 pmSolution: Send this guy to iraq 60 days and make him shower with Iraq water.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:08 pmIf you took a bath in bottled water in those jogger bottles, it would take about 40 of the things to fill a washtub. At $2.50 an eight pack for the store brand, that would total out at about $12.50 a bath. Since KBR uses KBR logo-ed Evian, the cost would probably be more like $600.00 per bath. The only option for our military is that soldiers bath in sewerage at a lesser cost of $100.00 per wash with water supplied by KBR.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:14 pmMcCain and Cheney are going over to Iraq next week, perhaps they would like to shower and tell us what babies our troops are. " After all you go to war with what you have not what you would like to have. " Oh that's Rumsfeldt line to a soldier asking for an armored humvee.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:25 pmHow the hell can we afford safe water for laundry, bathing, and other exodermal use when we're getting new stealth bombers that cost billions?
Do you want to be the one who tells the defense contractors they can't gorge on useless projects like they have since WWII, for the TROOPS?
Soldiers don't need water, they have freedom! Yeeeeehawwww!
America, YUCK FEAH!
March 12th, 2008 at 6:27 pmSeriously, IN ADDITION to looking at this with disgust and stunned mouths agape, in 20, 40 years we're going to look at this and just...
"What the freakin' hell were we/they thinking?"
Alien/Sedition Act, Japanese Internment, bashing our troops in Vietnam with the DRAFT, etc.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:32 pmI mean to say "in addition to looking... now," since we can see the pustules at KBR but for most people it hasn't sunk in.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:33 pmEach time our military are subject to crap that creates birth defects, and each time our government says, just isn't so. Now maybe water won't go that far but what else are they subject to that has long lasting effects, aside from losing mental health and limbs.
March 12th, 2008 at 6:42 pmCongress will have hearings about this and then in a week or so it will be forgotten. And why not when you have the Republican side of the aisle playing politics on everything, party over country on each and every issue regardless of who or what gets hurt, maimed, or killed.
I find it utterly amazing that Congress has allowed itself to be so easily marginalized. Don't they care that they've been made a joke of by BushCo, regardless of party? The only thing I can think of is that they don't care as long as they have their paycheck and their benefits. They have power of course but only such that it benefits them and not those that the serve, not those that elected them.
I'm closing in on 50 years on this planet and I would have never imagined this country becoming what it has become. If Nixon were alive today he'd be kicking himself. He resigned over Watergate and Bush isn't even being threatened with impeachment for the crimes he's committed. Poor Dick, he just didn't do enough homework before trying to be a dictator.

March 12th, 2008 at 7:34 pmThere were facilities to which water deliveries were sometimes not made at all until extraordinary pressure was brought on the contractors. If/when the military tried to hold up/with hold payments to force compliance with contracts. Deliveries of all sorts were slowed or stopped and commanders on the ground were advised to bend ears at the Pentagon to accelerate payments or logistic support would stop (i.e., blackmail). Of course the military caved because Rumsfeld had stripped away considerable logistical muscle to create his "lean, meaner, more mobile" vision of an Army (at the mercy of unscrupulous Republican crony contractors). Go to your library or buy and read Betraying Our Troops: The Destructive Results of Privatizing War by Rasor and Bauman to get the details and not just my recollections.

March 13th, 2008 at 1:25 amJust when I think I can't get more outraged...pooof - they do something to make my blood pressure spike.
I have to admit, the Republicans have become quite good at just moving from one scandal to the next which avoids ever spending any decent time on one specific transgression and the previous one gets forgotten as we stumble into the newest disgusting abuse and destruction of our country.
What is even worse, is that the Democrats in congress appears to be more concerned with keeping this war going long enough to benefit from the election instead of doing the right thing. As much as there are good people in the Democratic party as well as in congress, the leadership is extremely disgusting as well. When given the choice between Democrats and Republicans, the choice if obvious, but they are negligent too.
Republicans are equivalent to the pedophile step father while the Democrats are the mother that ignores it. One can't happen without the other.
All the while our brave Soldiers, Airmen, and Marines are giving their lives. Sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers are not going to make it home. Families are being torn apart, our country is being raped and pillaged. We are mortgaging any future that we may have left as well as destroying the ideals that this country stood for. On top of it all, we are creating more enemies, and desperate people that feel they have no other option but to resort to violence.
We cry out to those we elected and what I hear is "oh...just let the suffering continue until January - THEN we can do something about it." I have heard that before only to be let down in January of 2007. Crime after crime going unpunished as we stumble into more and more egregious transgressions.
I could go on and on....I am so frustrated as I see everything I believed this country to be fading away like a dream on Monday morning. Like trying to remember later in the day what was so great about that dream, the "good ole' days" of the late 1990s, when everything looked so bright, seem to be more and more of a fantasy. I can barely remember what it felt like to be proud of the leadership role this country was playing in the world.
