Spitzer resigns as New York governor.

Spitzer resigns as New York governor.

Today, Eliot Spitzer announced that he is stepping down as governor of New York state, after his involvement in a high-end prostitution ring was revealed earlier this week. His resignation will be effective on March 17. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/spitzerrr.320.240.flv]

Lt. Gov. David Paterson will now take Spitzer’s position, becoming the state’s first African-American and blind governor, and only the third African-American governor since Reconstruction.

UPDATE: Lt. Gov. David Paterson has put out a statement:

Like all New Yorkers I am saddened by what we have learned over the past several days. On a personal level Governor Spitzer and Silda have been close and steadfast friends. As an elected official the Governor has worked hard for the people of New York.

My heart goes out to him and to his family at this difficult and painful time. I ask all New Yorkers to join Michelle and me in prayer for them.

It is now time for Albany to get back to work as the people of this state expect from us.

Transcript:

SPITZER: In the past few days I have begun to atone for my private failings with my wife Silda, my children and my entire family. The remorse I feel will also be with me. Words cannot describe how grateful I am for the love and compassion they have shown me.

From those to whom much is given, much is expected. I have been given much: the love of my family, the faith and trust of the people of New York, and the chance to lead this state. I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me.

To every New Yorker, and to all those who believed in what I tried to stand for, I sincerely apologize.

I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been. But I also know that as a public servant, I and the remarkable people with whom I work have accomplished a great deal.

There is much more to be done, and I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.

Over the course of my public life I have insisted — I believe correctly — that people, regardless of their position or power, take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less of myself.

For this reason, I am resigning from the office of governor. At Lieutenant Governor Paterson’s request, the resignation will be effective Monday, March 17, a date that he believes will permit an orderly transition.

I go forward with the belief, as others have said, that as human beings our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time that we fall.

As I leave public life, I will first do what I need to do to help and heal myself and my family. Then I will try once again, outside of politics, to serve the common good and to move toward the ideals and solutions which I believe can build a future of hope and opportunity for us and for our children.

I hope all of New York will join my prayers for my friend David Paterson as he embarks on his new mission. And I thank the public once again for their privilege of service.

Thank you very much.

Perhaps Mr. Paterson can raise awareness Nationally about the plight persons with disabilities are in.

Is Ferraro complaining about this, too?

And how about that Senator from NY?

  2. missmolly says:

This is a man who goes after prostitution operations like a pit bull while privately patronizing them. I shed no tears for this hypocrite.

However, I DO notice that in our political system, sexual misdeeds still seem to be far graver than abusing the power of one’s office.

  3. swank says:

As an upstate New Yorker I have to say I’m sad. A very intelligent man, even his resignation speech was well crafted and sounded sincere…and yet he fails us with his hypocrisy. We expected so much more from him when we voted him in…

  4. Xisithrus says:

So when are the ‘bring back integrity’ folks going to ask for Vitters and Craigs resignation?

  5. Zimzone says:

Republics don’t resign, they just slither away to the nearest stall

  6. McWars says:

Today will warm the hearts of people with disabilities and their advocates.

    Congratulations, Governor Patterson!

  7. raynman says:

Sure, maybe it was under pressure, but he did have the cojones to do the right thing and step down.

Pardon me if I don’t hold my breath for the disgraced Republicans (!) to do the same….

  8. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Thank you TP for finally saying he was “involved” with prostitutes, not “linked to a prostitution ring”. Why is it that Republicans are involved with prostitutes, but Democrats are “linked” to prostitution rings?

  9. swank says:

Yeah, where’s the resignation speeches from Vitter and Craig et al??

  10. JMOHR says:

I do feel sorry for Spitzer. He was a brilliant attorney and did much to control the worst impulses of Wall Street. Should he have resigned? Yes, his hypocrisy should cost him his job. But why should we have no sympathy for the man. He did a lot of good, had a lot of promise and now has been held up to public ridicule and lost all that great promise life had in store for him. I may not approve of his actions but one problem we have in the US is this feeling that if you fail, you deserve no compassion. This leads to the kind of winner take all philosophy that feeds many Wall Street and corporate executives. We see it in those who oppose any social safety net or gloat over those who were victims of subprime mortgages (while Wall Street gets bailed out.) Maybe it is time to have empathy for others. Yes, Spitzer deserves his just deserts and they will be bitter. However, the glee that we see from many sickens me.

We progressives don’t cotton to misdeeds, unlike the repukes who thrive on immoral, criminal activities.

  12. curmudgeon says:

Wonder if Spitzer wishes he was a Republican? In that case, the FBI would have completed ignored his actions, and even if he was found out, he certainly would not need to resign. Just ask David Vitter and Larry Craig.

  13. lefty says:

Big mistake. The NY State Republicans threatened to impeach. You really have to call them on that bluff and put the word “Impeachment” on the front cover of the papers. Force the GOP to keep impeachment in people’s minds as this country’s biggest political criminals plot to start WWIII against the will of the American people.

“You know, Lt. Gov. Patterson wouldn’t be where he is if he was a white, fully sighted male. And if Spitzer wasn’t a horndog.”

…or if he was a televangelist tearfully appearing on TV saying how he had sinned against Jeebus…

  16. Exley says:

He has always been a bullying, arrogant, corrupt hypocrite….Good riddance. He will not be missed….The State of New York is an infinitely better place with him out of office.

I realize, of course, that one is not supposed to take pleasure in the problems of others, but I must admit seeing this man, who became governor on the backs of people he harassed and intimidated and coerced by abusing his prosecutorial discretion as AG is a delight.

The rogue prosecutor now facing prosecution — Fantastic.

I never voted for him — either for AG or governor. Vindication is sweet.

Eliminate? He screwed up and resigned. What comment did Obama make or what influence did Obama have in forcing Spitzer to resign?

The people of NY have spoken, Spitzer is out.

  18. curmudgeon says:

See what happens when you are a public figure and take on Big Money in this country? If you protect the interests of the large corporations, you can get by with everything and if you cross them, you get by with nothing.

Aren’t we fortunate that the FBI’s resources and wiretapping activities are being used in this manner to “protect us” from evil?

Mega-contributions to Bush & Company will surely be flowing soon, for their focusing of the FBI’s efforts on Spitzer.

Although there was supposedly some question as to whether sufficient funding for the Bush Pwesidential Libwawy would be forthcoming, that should no longer be a problem.

Now, perhaps, all you trolls will finally start to understand why many of us here have long been calling for prosecution of the war criminals in our various governmental entities, particularly in the Executive branch of our federal government, instead of always just going after the sex criminals…

  22. Zooey says:

Once again, Exley is on the “winning” team.

Hey, how’s that Romney campaign going? I bet you’re loving the fact that McCain is your man now.

  23. McWars says:

I wish Spitzer and his family a full recovery from all of this and nothing but the best.

  24. curmudgeon says:

Spitzer most certainly could not have been the only public figure who patronized this call girl service. Who are the others?

  25. ralph the wonder llama says:

I have sympathy for Spitzer personally, I think prostitution should be legal and regulated, but he did the right thing in resigning. He had lost his credibility to govern. He had betrayed the trust of the people of New York.

On a lesser note, I also have sympathy for Gigi. She no longer gets to use her newest favorite talking point “Superdelegate #9″.

Poor Gigi. Such a great talking point, gone before its time.

Agreed. I’ve spent the last 33 yrs advocating, supporting and developing employment for persons with disabilities.

Having Gov. Paterson in the news will only help non-disabled people gain awareness of how abled people with disabilities are.

  42. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

‘March 11, 2008 — Cheers erupted on trading floors around the city yesterday as word spread of the stunning downfall of Gov. Spitzer – who spent most of his term as attorney general torturing Wall Street with his witch hunt for financial wrongdoing.

An employee of a major investment bank, who requested anonymity, said the company chef had been instructed to break out bottles of champagne so that the staff could party and swap jokes about “client No. 9.”

    1) As Missmolly says in post 2, he’s a hypocrite. He deserves to resign. I don’t follow NY politics, but, even agreeing with Exley here, good riddance.
    2) Do notice that in his apology, he states that it is “his failings”. NOT his wife’s, our societies, or anything/anyone else. He took responsibility. Good show.

    Now the vent:
As I walked to a local hot dog restaurant for lunch, a headline from the USAToday was practically screaming at me… “What makes a man of power cheat”, and then goes on to list Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Kobe Bryant, as well as a few celebrities. Every single media outlet is now on the questioning a man’s fidelity. Newsweek, yahoo, Time, hell, even the quack Dr. Laura was interviewed (which by the way was a fun thread).
Where were the headlines of “What makes a distinguished husband and family man toe tap in a restroom stall known for it’s anonymous gay sex?” or “Why do congressmen abuse their power and solicit sex with young male interns?” Where was the outrage? Where were the continuous quack doctors making their rounds on all media stations? Why could Vitter, Craig, et al. be practically swept under the rug, yet Spitzer is making headline after headline after headline?

  68. Zooey says:

An article by Eliot Spitzer about predatory lending, and BushCo’s facilitation thereof:

How the Bush administration stopped the states from stepping in to help consumers.

Several years ago, state attorneys general and others involved in consumer protection began to notice a marked increase in a range of predatory lending practices by mortgage lenders. Some were misrepresenting the terms of loans, making loans without regard to consumers’ ability to repay, making loans with deceptive “teaser” rates that later ballooned astronomically, packing loans with undisclosed charges and fees, or even paying illegal kickbacks. These and other practices, we noticed, were having a devastating effect on home buyers. In addition, the widespread nature of these practices, if left unchecked, threatened our financial markets.

Even though predatory lending was becoming a national problem, the Bush administration looked the other way and did nothing to protect American homeowners. In fact, the government chose instead to align itself with the banks that were victimizing consumers.

  99. ralph the wonder llama says:

joe cantwell rises an excellent point about Southern Man’s “top ten list”.

Let’s examine the dates of SM’s faves:

    10: vague “1990s”
    9. fondling in 1989
    8. vote to censure in 1990. Offense occurred in 1988 and wasn’t Frank’s action.
    7. 1988
    6. 1978
    5. 1976
    4. also 1976
    3. 1994
    2. 1969
    1. 1996

REally, SM? That’s the very best you can do? The most recent of these incidents is a dozen years old. Almost half of them occurred before Reagan was inaugurated.

If that’s the best you can do, it would seem that Democrats have settled down quite a bit over the past 40 years.

Just did some more checking on SM’s Top Ten, and no. 10, actually refers to a campaign ad run in 1992 by an opponent of Sen Inouye, making hay out of an incident that occurred in 1975.

So that makes fully HALF of SM’s list at least 30 years old. And still none more recent than a dozen years.

    THAT’s timely, SM.

How about your numbers 11-20 now? We can handle it.

  104. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

You don’t believe Teddy was responsible for that young womans death? Then who was Arn? Bush senior maybe? That would make sense in your world.

Ted Kennedy was responsible for the death of the young woman. Just like Laura Bush was responsible for the death of her ex-boyfriend when she killed him in an automobile accident. The point is they were both ruled accidental, not crimes.

At what point would say old news becomes irrelevant to today’s political climate, then? How about a scandal involving Sen. Arthur Brown (R-UT) who was shot to death by a jealous mistress in 1906? Is that relevant?

Or you could go to Rep. Wm. Breckenridge (D-KY) who was sued by his longtime mistress in 1893 to prove that Democrats are just as bad.

Here’s a good one: famed lawyer and orator, Secretary of State, and Senator Daniel Webster (D. MA), the father of four legitimate children, was accused by Washington, DC correspondent Jane Grey Swisshelm of fathering two illegitimate “mulatto” children in 1850.

I’m one of the ones here who have repeatedly said they wished we would vote almost ALL currently elected office holders out. A clean sweep, if ya know what I mean.

In some cases, you’re citing cases of folks who have been DEAD for years. Do you want to dig them up so they can resign or be tried?

The GOOP leadership covered for Mark Foley until it couldn’t hide the mess anymore, and then tried to blame it on the “librul” media.

The Betty Broderick case has been discredited so many times, yet you still list it. Apparently in YOUR world, discredited allegations are TRUE, and the actions of dead people excuse the actions of the living.

We need to seperate the MORAL issue from the ETHICAL one…
We cannot legislate morals since they are the inner compass used to guide behavior- we CAN legislate ethics since they are the rules that society uses to guide behavior…
Bill Clinton and Monica was a moral issue, therefore a private matter between him and his family- that’s why the grounds for impeachment were contempt, not sex… and they only scraped those together after years of depositions and narrowing the deinition of ’sexual relations’ intentionally in the hopes of ‘tripping’ Clinton up- it was silly, childish and wasteful.
Vitter, Craig, Spitzer, et al. (refer to RHF’s list for more) all broke the law- that’s an ethical violation and therefore they need to resign.
That’s the point- ETHICS v. MORALS… learn the difference.

I know firsthand his lack of prosecutorial ethics and will not jump on the PR campaign that he is some kind of saint because he allegedly cleaned up Wall Street and the financial services industry. Actually, many mutual fund shareholders (regular middle class investors) were actually harmed as a result of steamroll methods. His alleged crusade against Wall Street had nothing to do with concerns with investors, but everything to do with propelling his personal political agenda to the governorship. Good riddance. And congrats to those of you who fell for his PR.

Ted Kennedy didn’t exactly get a free pass from the Chappaquiddick incident. However, he has taken his lumps and has moved on. The voters of Massachusetts have returned him to the Senate SEVEN TIMES since Chappaquiddick (once defeating Mitt Romney!). They obviously want him there, but the righties have a hard time accepting this.

SM, the poster who called you a racist has established a reputation as a troll masquerading as a progressive. He’ll log on and spew all kinds of outlandish imitations of progressives speech, probably to make progressives look bad.

Sure, I know there are real posters on here who reflexively call you a racist because of your handle, and that’s not fair. But thecairngman isn’t one of ‘em.

    He’s a fake.

Yeah, Teddy’s done some unsavory things in his life and the performance you mention certainly could be spun the way you spin it.

But the fact is that Kennedy gets elected because of the work he does in the Senate for the people of Massachusetts.

And your accusation of He …stays out of trouble because of his party affiliation and his great name sounds like a damn good description of our current president, don’t ya think?

Okay, it probably won’t be a popular opinion at the moment, but I don’t count SM as a real troll anymore.

He sticks to his opinions, sure, but I don’t think he comes on just to derail threads like he used to. He seems to actually want to engage arguments at times now.

Yeah, he’ll throw some sh!t at the wall sometimes just to see what sticks and stink up the joint at the same time, but, hell, so do I. (Except my sh!t don’t stink, right?)

Anyway, I’d like to maintain some discipline in our terms here, and troll gets over-used sometimes. Most of our friends from the other side are trolls. Gigi- troll. T2 — troll. Charles Napier — troll. Cheap Bathtub Gin — nothin’ but a troll.

I’d even go so far as to say Exley is a troll. But I would give SM credit for his attempts at discourse. Same with Keltoi.

    Just my opinion.

  166. Fred says:

Oh, OK, Fred whatever you say. Everything is a conspiracy. LOL.

  167. tombaker says:

Y’know what? Spitzer should’ve just come up with a story about “penetrating” that ring of prostitutes to uncover their connections to Al Qaeda, and that he was doing it to “save american lives” – then this whole thing would’ve blown right over and he could keep on governoring and banging pro’s all the live-long day.

After all, it’s not a lie, or a crime, if it’s committed in service of the Cheerleader’s Glorious GWoT.

#205 — hold the phone. Who the hell are you to talk about my moral fiber. You don’t even know who I am or that I am not even a gooper. Never voted for a Republican in my life. Also, would you like to prove some of your more reckless allegations here, such as (i) it was a political hit; (ii) illegal wire taps were used; (iii) Spitzer was investigating Carlyle Group.

Waiting while the crickets chirp. See in the world of the law where I work, you actually have to prove your allegations, not pull them out of your arse. Furthermore, spare me your moral fiber bs. In your simplistic world, I suppose people lack moral fiber because we disagree with you. Well thank you very much, that I disagree with your simpleton views, means that I have substance and not participating in an echo chamber. Enjoy your simplistic little conclusions, loser.

  171. ralph the wonder llama says:

I see what you’re saying, Fred, but I’m willing to cut SM some slack.

Maybe it’s just because I wish there were more conservatives here who would stand up for their beliefs and make solid arguments for them, instead of Clinton Did Itâ„¢ all the time.

  172. tombaker says:

I’d cut old Dixie some more slack too, if he’d own up to his citizenship.

Well, wasn’t the Pres. Clinton the “tat” for the Pres. Nixon “tit”?

I always thought the main reason the Republicans hounded Pres. Clinton for as long as they did was because he was so popular and they wanted to “get the Dems back’ for Pres. Nixon resigning when he was caught breaking the law.

I’d be lyin’ if I said I didn’t like playin’ Whack-a-Trollâ„¢, ralph. I don’t like a lot of what SM says, but I don’t flag him the way I flagged Bert Convey or cairgnman. Trolling is a strange phenomenon as far as I can tell and I’m not quite sure what it’s about.

I usually only flag someone, like the above mentioned twits, when I’m sure they’re ONLY here to flat out screw w/ folks heads. Some trolls, like SM, keltoi, Ex-lax, & g_g, can be annoyingas hell, but they don’t flat out drive me up the wall the way Bert did.

I was here during Mr P’s meth rampages and that one was destroying the place. Free speech is a strange thing.

So, does the “Vitter” name give similar type protection to Sen. Vitter?

Not that he raped anyone, but the man did confess that he visited prostitutes. Why does Gov. Spitzer have to resign with Republicans calling for his impeachment, while Sen. Vitter gets a free pass?

  180. Leftside Annie says:

Wow, Southie – am I supposed to be crushed because you sussed out that I ….*gasp!!* know about blow jobs…?

Not Spitzer. Not Vitter. The only reason Larry Craig got arrested is because they didn’t know he was a Senator.

He certainly help make it easy on Coulter. This is some of her best work.

    .
    .
    .
Spitzer can’t go to the restaurants he used to frequent. He can’t go to the Whitney Museum near his apartment. He can’t go to track meets at his daughters’ expensive private school. He can’t show his face in public.
    .
    .
    .
The golden boy’s disgrace is deep and subliminal; it can’t be expunged.
    .
    .
    .
It’s absurd to talk about legal defenses. This guy has fallen from the pinnacle of New York society to being a disgrace to his class. He’s the Ivy League version of Paris Hilton.

That was always the advantage Clinton had: We never expected any better. He went from Skunk Trot, Ark., to Skunk Trot, Ark. Spitzer fell from Fifth Avenue to Skunk Trot, Ark.
