A new and improved ThinkProgress!

We’re excited to announce that we will be unveiling a redesign of ThinkProgress tomorrow. The new site will revamp the look of TP and add a large array of new user functions. Stay tuned…

I like how it is know, but change is constant. I trust your work.

  2. missmolly says:

ooo — do we get a way to show how often a post has been flagged? Will trolls get banned at their IP source instead of just by screen name? Will users be able to set up profiles that can be viewed by others? Will there be items shining a light on Hillary’s dirty tricks?

  3. Bushie says:

Please don’t! This site works great’ if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. FDL redesigned theirs and it sucks!

  4. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    New and improved snarking capabilities?

Little insertable icons for obscene hand gestures?

Some sort of built-in translator function that will decode insane troll rantings into common English?

  5. missmolly says:

Hey — I’d just be happy with formatting tools that actually worked (although they apparently do for some people).

  6. ThinkOutsideTheBush says:

I am new here and I just learned to use the site yesterday. Go figure. It’s like when I finally find a new food I like, they change the recipe! (Don’t ya just hate that???)

I’m just busting your chops, oh ye Think Progress gods. I look forward to the new stuff! And please give us emoticons so we can stick our tongues out at trolls.

  7. normalasf says:

All I hope is that you’ve tested it in a variety of browsers on different operating systems.

  8. Witch1 says:

Ummm. Can you give me a time line on learning curve please, I tend to be a lot slow on learning new stuff ya know……Regarding diffaculty, what is the rating ratio to educated poster’’s….I’m still working on spelling…..LOL…Blessings

  9. tom says:

    Gee, missmolly.

I think the format tools work great.

Can’t imagine why you are having problems with them.

  10. ralph the wonder llama says:

Some sort of built-in translator function that will decode insane troll rantings into common English?

Comment by The Republic of Stupidity — March 13, 2008 @ 1:23 pm

I’m not sure that’s a function we really want, TRoS. I’m a little askeert of what such a translation would reveal.

  11. Marie says:

I would be happy if the formatting tools worked for me also.
I have tried to follow the word press instructions and they don’t help.

I hope there is a way to cut down on the ease with which trolls can hijack threads.
I don’t necessarily want to eliminate trolls, but when they take over threads, I just click off.

Actually, the present TP page is pretty easy to navigate – I hope that doesn’t change too much. I have some trouble with The Zoo where I find navigation confusing — something like Daily Kos.
    Just sayin …
Perhaps it is my old brain staggering at new methods.

  12. missmolly says:

    Comment by ThinkOutsideTheBush — March 13, 2008 @ 1:26 pm

Welcome to TP, and I hope we get to hear a lot from you.

You’re probably in the best position of all of us for the site change — you won’t have to “unlearn” anything!

  13. McWars says:

I may get my bum handed to me tommorrow, but I really think this website is fast and very attractive as it is. I can understand wanting to mix it up, even when the users don’t yearn for change, but please don’t modify anything significantly. TP, you already draw a great, a positive distinction.

  14. tombaker says:

Will the new TP infuriate righties like never before?!!!!!!!!

    I sure hope so.

  20. The Republic of Stupidity says:

I’m a little askeert of what such a translation would reveal.

Comment by ralph the wonder llama — March 13, 2008 @ 1:30 pm

I understand perfectly, Ralph. I do. And askeet ya should be.

But it would allow us to formulate more appropriate and therefore stinging rebukes and counter-insults, no?

I mean, it really works when we have qualified translators on board here. Just go look at the sparkling, articulate exchanges we’ve had w/ bitbltthis morning on the Dr Laura thread .

  21. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Is this really necessary? And if it is, will there be a little bomb icon that I can use on the trolls?

  22. Zooey says:

I have some trouble with The Zoo where I find navigation confusing — something like Daily Kos.

    Comment by Marie — March 13, 2008 @ 1:30 pm

Really? I thought we had it as simple as TP. When you get a chance, Marie, stop by the Zoo and let me know the problems you’re having.

One of the aggravating things is that you have to log on each time.

  23. toasterhead says:

Or are you going to go on with the same protective reporting on her misdeeds?

    Just wonderin’.

  26. Zooey says:

    Comment by missmolly — March 13, 2008 @ 1:35 pm

Try Firefox, Miss Molly. Everything works for me — except my brain. :)

  27. Jeremy in Denver says:

I’m hoping it includes a red downwards facing thumb to ‘negative recommend’, reducing the score. Maybe with an option to not view posts from people with a recommend below a certian amount. Failing that, an option that allows me to flag a poster as unworthy of reading, so it won’t send me, say, good_golly or BERT WHATEVERTHEHELLHISLASTNAMEIS or so on’s posts.

And yes, behind the scenes, flagging at IP address with secondary email based authentication would be good.

I am happy that the system now forces users to authenticate. That was something the trolls abused before.

  28. toasterhead says:

Well that’s it then. I quit.

  36. liberal traitor says:

Good to hear about new TP format.

Sorry for the off topic but, you really have to read this. It’s a memo from the Clinton Campaign to “Interested Parties” regarding what they call Obama’s “Downward Spiral.” Hillary Clinton: Ready on Day One to Not Understand Math in Electoral Politics…

    http://thepage.time.com/clinton-memo-on-pennsylvania/

The memo seems to be claiming that Obama is losing support of everyone because in the last few contests he has one more the 50% in just about every demographic they list…what?

They also seem to be suggesting that even though Obama is ahead in delegates and the popular vote, that because he one smaller percentages in the demographics listed in Ohio, Texas, and Mississippi, that those same Democratic voters, should he win the nomination, will not vote for him in the general… or soemthing like that…

Clinton’s desperation is showing — to the point where I am embarrassed for her.

Unless something truly dramatic happens in Pennsylvania, Obama and Clinton will most likely split the delegates, with one of them getting a couple more than the other. It’s not going to change the relative totals appreciably.

And if Obama really was in a “downward spiral” — the Clinton campaign wouldn’t have to point that out, they could just let it happen.

    Sound and fury…

That kind of a translation program is sooooo easy, I can even write the code. Basically, for every troll ranting, the translation would be: I am an a–hole.

  55. DRxJ says:

I hope that the new format will allow those on the opposite side of the fence to readily post here, and debate.
I also hope that the new format will readily and permanently ban idiots that only want to derail a thread, who, for whatever reason, “get off” seeing there gibberish posted.
Well, and a happy hour would be nice also. I’ll buy the first round.

Actually, that would be O Bigfoot, and he’s seems to be gone.

I personally suspect he got caught w/in 500 feet of an elementary school and had his parole revoked.

  110. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Geez, TP. Youse guys should post a not-so-serious thread like this one every day. That way, we could get the snarking out of our systems and it wouldn’t end up all over the more serious ones…

    ***snicker***

Yeaaah, I know… fat chance, huh? I crack myself up sometimes.

    Gotta go! Later, all.

A tip for all posters who have a problem with spelling. Only browse in Firefox. It has a nifty feature that will underline a word that is misspelled. Then when you right click on the word, you get choices for the correct spelling. Try it, you’ll like it!

    Comment by liberal traitor

This woman just gets more and more vile every day. And I love it that she says he lost in Texas. I guess she’s a little behind the news curve. Last thing I read, Obama beat her in delegates in Texas. That doesn’t sound like a loss to me!

Download and install Firefox. It’s a far superior browser and even helps you with spelling errors!

  124. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

This may have already been mentioned, but what I would love on this site is a “kill” feature where you can filter out all posts that contain a certain list of words like “Frank M” or “Gin”. I would be very grateful if that were to happen.

No need to sell me on Firefox — it’s what I use at home and I find it runs far more problem-free than IE.

Unfortunately, I can’t download anything on my work computer — they have major hissies here about things like that.

  129. Witch1 says:

    #46 Mr. Evil,
I always enjoyed Ryan Neat’s posts — he was a fount of information and he could blast the trolls like no one else.
He got in trouble with TP, though, then made only sporadic appearances, and now has seemed to disappear. Too bad for us.

There have been a number of really good posters at TP since the beginning, but, alas, we seem to have lost some.

Wow this was a fun thread and I missed it!

I would like the ability to edit my posts after they are posted! It has been done elsewhere and would be a lot better than having to post a new post referencing the old incorrect one.

tip for all posters who have a problem with spelling. Only browse in Firefox.

I like firefox not just because of the built in pop-up blocker and spell check it also warns of phishing sites and doesnt use nasty active-x or pry deeply into your operating system as internet explorer and explorer are entertwined.

  147. Zooey says:

Some people get too excited about spelling and grammar. If so, make sure your own comments are flawless — don’t worry about the other guy.

I think the meaning and intent are clear on most of the comments on TP.

  148. TampaCT says:

I’m old, I crotchety, and I don’t like change! Keep it like it is…notice how I am making a point to say this before I see the new format.
