Dr. Laura stands by her man comments.

Dr. Laura stands by her man comments.»

This week, Dr. Laura Schlessinger made headlines when she blamed former governor Eliot Spitzer’s wife for her husband’s unethical behavior, saying, “I hold women accountable for tossing out perfectly good men.” Yesterday, on Fox News’ Hannity and Colmes, Dr. Laura again shifted blame to women:

COLMES: Isn’t it the jerk who cheats on his wife? Doesn’t the responsibility lie with that adulterer and that man who makes that decision?

SCHLESSINGER: His responsibility for cheating is his. The responsibility for mistreating her man is hers.

Watch it:

Screenshot

When Colmes asked whether men who cheat on their wives were “narcissistic,” Schlessinger said, “No, the wives haven’t been respecting them.”

Transcript:

SCHLESSINGER: OK. The first part of that, which they left out, of course, was that I said if the man is a narcissist, a sociopath, bipolar, a number of things, all bets are off. He’s a jerk.

However, it is…

COLMES: Yes.

SCHLESSINGER: And you know, I was here for The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands.

COLMES: Yes.

SCHLESSINGER: And we discussed this then. When women do not –when women ignore, neglect, don’t nurture, don’t love, don’t kiss up, don’t do all those wonderful things to their husbands, they’re more susceptible. That doesn’t mean they are not responsible for their actions.

COLMES: Isn’t it the jerk who cheats on his wife? Doesn’t the responsibility lie with that adulterer and that man who makes that decision?

SCHLESSINGER: His responsibility for cheating is his. The responsibility for mistreating her man is hers.

COLMES: And just because a man cheats does not mean he was mistreated. He could just be a horny guy who…

HANNITY: Oh!

COLMES: Jeez, you never heard that word before?

SCHLESSINGER: And I said, if he’s narcissistic, sociopathic, then all bets are off.

COLMES: Right.

SCHLESSINGER: That he’s a jerk.

COLMES: And aren’t most men who cheat on their wives — fall in that category?

SCHLESSINGER: No.

COLMES: They’re narcissistic?

SCHLESSINGER: No.

COLMES: They’re not respecting their wives.

SCHLESSINGER: No, the wives haven’t been respecting them.

COLMES: Really?

Good for Colmes for at least pressing her on your stupidity. I would have been more impressed if he’d simply laughed at her or told her she was nuts.

Isn’t this line from the Old Testament?

Oh, good! Another Dr. Laura thread.

Maybe Daryll will show up to tell us how he knows that Dr. Laura knows that Silda Spitzer “tossed out a perfectly good man”.

  16. NoMoreBush Says:

Can you refer TPers to an example of women receiving the treatment, or degree of citizenship, to which they are entitled? Perhaps a reference to the treatment, or degree of citizenship, that women need would be just as enlightening.

Which culture, or which husband, is able to do this in the manner Dr. Matt thinks appropriate?

Dr. Matt seems to know when it’s “wrong.” bitblt is wondering if Dr. Matt knows when it’s “right.”

  19. OsirisHusseinOsiris Says:

Now the term “chauvenist pig” can be applied to a woman. Thanks for your regression of women back to the Dark Ages.

When in doubt: blame the woman. Maybe Dr. Laura is to blame for the ridiculous level of chauvenism in this country?

  20. alpuz3 Says:

  21. missmolly Says:

On the TODAY Show, Dr. Laura said, “[W]hen the wife does not focus in on the needs and the feelings, sexually, personally, to make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like her hero, he’s very susceptible to the charm of some other woman making him feel what he needs.”

Dr. Laura doesn’t want to acknowledge the difference between being “susceptible to the charm of some other woman” and consciously paying $4,000 for a high priced hooker and transporting her in from another state to get his jollies.

What — the prostitution ring had an ad campaign that Spitzer just couldn’t resist? Were the prostitutes making overt efforts to “charm” Spitzer into giving them his business?

  22. OsirisHusseinOsiris Says:

Dr. Laura’s comments only illustrate her own level of personal degradation. No doubt she’s her husband’s personal doormat and garbage receptacle.

  25. Parrotlover77 Says:

What, exactly, does Dr. Laura have a doctorate in and where did she get it from? The wikipedia doesn’t say and I’m not sure I can trust right-wing propoganda sites for that information.

I’m curious because she tends to blame the victim a lot. I want to know where she learned that.

People tend to look upon the “Dr.” title as being in the medical profession, at least when somebody gets on the air, flaunts it, and makes medical/psychological statements. It would be more responsible if the teevee shows would say, “Dr. Doe, who received [his/her] doctorate in [insert discipline] from [insert university].”

It’s irresponsible reporting to treat her as an authority on the matter if she, in fact, is not.

However, despite that, I must say that Colmes is really getting better at representing the liberal side than he used to be back in the “war is really awesome” days of the media back in ‘05/’06.

  26. RUCerious Says:

    Comment by bitblt — March 13, 2008 @ 12:28 pm

ralph thinks his wife would agree that she receives the treatment “or degree of citizenship” to which she’s entitled in their partnership.

beyond that, ralph is unsure what bitblt is asking, since bitblt didn’t exactly make it clear. bitblt may need a cup of coffee to wake himself up before posting.

  29. OsirisHusseinOsiris Says:

“to make him feel like a man - to make him feel like a hero”??? Earth to Dr. Laura: Wake up and smell the coffee - it’s 2008 and now 1948! This ridiculous philosophy also perpetuates the myth that men can’t “take care of themselves” so it’s the woman/mother who must do so.

Does this addled-brained pseudo-psychologist (is she really credentialled after all?) is totally clueless about life in this century.

Hmm…. where have I seen that before? “Blaming the victim”? Oh, yeah, “the poor in New Orleans suffered because they’re lazy and deserve to be poor”… seems to be a familiar right-wing theme.

Well, in all fairness, the ads for the “The Emperors Club VIP” I saw online in news articles the last few days were pretty slick. Clearly they were done by an upscale advertising firm. Made it look kinda like a Hilton Hotel w/ extra special room service.

N’ maybe they had an irresistibly catchy jingle or sumpin’.

    You deserve a […] today…

Have it YOUR way… at the Emperors Club VIP…

I mean, did you realistically expect a high class roller like Elliot ta do his shoppin’ at “Barney’s Beer Shack”?

Hey, trolls! See??? We’re Equal Opportunity Snarkers here at TP.

We lay it on everyone, given the chance.

  37. Tawdry Says:

Of course this is her story; it’s the wife’s fault when her husband cheats on her. Schlessinger met her husband when they both worked at USC. He was a married man with children when they began their affair. They lived together for 8 years before marrying. How else could she justify her actions? If Holmes was any good at his job he would have brought up this little tidbit.

  38. bitblt Says:

Comment by ralph the wonder llama — March 13, 2008 @ 12:34 pm

bitblt thinks third-person looks really good on ralph.

And for the pixelated record, bitblt wants to note that ralph put his “tentative” answer…

ralph thinks his wife would agree that she receives the treatment “or degree of citizenship” to which she’s entitled in their partnership.

…in the context of a marriage. bitlbt likes this answer and thinks the answer to his previous question will always be in the context of a marriage.

beyond that, ralph is unsure what bitblt is asking, since bitblt didn’t exactly make it clear.

bitblt was saying that Dr. Matt seems to know what’s “wrong” with the treatment of women. bitblt was wondering if Dr. Matt knows what would be “right” in the treatment of women. bitblt assumes that Dr. Matt will know “right” treatment when he says it even he’s not able to voice(write) it.

“political correctness” is reich-wing code for “librul bias/media”. It doesn’t exist. But, one thing is for sure, the conservatism movement/cult is coming to an end. Amen.

  84. Max-1 Says:

What Dr. Whora meant to say was:

“Protect your men of the world, women. Wear Burkas!”

    .

  85. Marie Says:

So women are here to make the men comfortable, secure, loved and attended to — is that right? If they “fail” to satisfy the man, then it is their fault if he steps out of line.

Not only is this amazingly denigrating to women, it also diminishes men, who are so “weak” that they need a woman to continuously shore him up (in every way).

Where did this quack get her degree?

  86. Max-1 Says:

    Headzup!

  87. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

PLC enjoys the new version of whack-a-troll. PLC notices that the “join ‘em so you can beat ‘em” version is both enjoyable and effective at reducing the troll droppings. PLC hopes all of PLC’s fellow TP-ers join PLC in promoting this technique.

We were just discussing this possibility over on that thread, Dr. Matt.

That, and a virtual custard pie launcher would be nice.

  89. AMcG773 Says:

“Is it just me , or does anybody else think that the end of political correctness is coming?”

What you calll “political correctness” is what I call “good manners.” You know, civility and respect. And I for one am hoping for a resurgence.

  90. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

I think a shower, drink, and a normal conversation would be a welcome reprieve right about now.

    Comment by PatrioticLiberalChristian — March 13, 2008 @ 1:23 pm

Okay, so it’s Sir… and if a shower and normal conversation aren’t available, feel free to have some extra drinks to compensate. Just put in on TP’s house account as payment for the translating services.

True, but it does provide fertile ground for excellent snarking.

  92. matty Says:

You have got to be kidding. What’s wrong with this woman? How is it a wife’s fault if her husband is unfaithful? isn’t that the same blaming technique used by abusive men?

  93. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

    TROS,

I think I’ll just skip the shower and conversation and have the drinks. Cutty Snark, perhaps. No, too obvious. Bloody Snark? No, too healthy. Snark and Coke, maybe. How about a Harvey Snarkbanger!! That’s it.

  94. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

Uhmm, you forgot the other two “6″s.

  95. Leftside Annie Says:

Hmmmm. This whole “it’s the woman’s fault if her husband strays” crap is the same misogynistic and medieval rationale used by the Taliban and other extremist Muslims to force women to wear burqas - lest they ‘tempt’ men into sin.

  96. Alectimmerman Says:

So, the good Dr. is like all conservatives. So ashamed at their own failings they try to make everryone else live up to their ridiculous standards…

She is a once divorced twice married adulturer!

“While working at USC, she met Dr. Lewis G. Bishop, who was married with dependent children. According to divorce filings, Schlessinger and Bishop began an affair. Bishop left his wife after more than 20 years of marriage, and moved in with Schlessinger. They lived together as an unmarried couple, and Schlessinger tried to get pregnant after reversing an earlier tubal ligation and suffering an ectopic pregnancy.”

  97. tombaker Says:

    What a tacky, tacky ho.

  98. had enough Says:

A caller, a family counselor, called into I think AAR, and stated: In my practice, I spend months explaining and convincing why it is NOT the wife’s fault reasons a husband has an affair. EX: the husband has a poor self esteem, does not feel worthy, feels inept and looks elsewhere to fill in the void.

  99. ChrisSEA Says:

“I don’t think Dr Laura is agreeing with Spitzers actions just trying to answer to the question why. No different from the right how you cherry pick comments.”

Huh? It certainly sounds like she’s giving him a great big pass. Oh, he payed for $5000 prostitutes because his wife wasn’t bowing down to him enough in some perverse way or another. No, this is something else entirely. She missed the boat on this one massively.

So on the one hand the right wing scream and moan and cry about the sanctity of heterosexual marriage and how we can’t let us homosexuals ruin it. Then Spitzer is caught using high price prostitutes and according ‘Dr’. Laura, well, his wife just wasn’t being a good enough wife. So why is it that this isn’t just the perfect illustration of how heterosexuals are the ones who ruin the sanctity of heterosexual marriage? If the wife isn’t ‘taking care of her man such that he is ‘forced’ to infidelity, why isn’t ‘Dr.’ Laura or the right wings decrying how she is ruining heterosexual marriage????????

  100. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I mean, Mr. Schlessinger would actually be in his right mind to cheat on this crazy bat.

Here’s some interesting facts about this “moral” woman:

While working at USC, she met Dr. Lewis G. Bishop, who was married with dependent children. According to divorce filings, Schlessinger and Bishop began an affair. Bishop left his wife after more than 20 years of marriage, and moved in with Schlessinger. They lived together as an unmarried couple, and Schlessinger tried to get pregnant after reversing an earlier tubal ligation and suffering an ectopic pregnancy. They married in early 1985, eight years after beginning their relationship, and Bishop became Schlessinger’s business manager. Schlessinger bore their only child, Deryk Schlessinger, in November 1985, when she was 38.

In 1998, allegedly upset that he was snubbed by Schlessinger at an event, former radio mentor Bill Ballance sold to a media outlet nude photos of Schlessinger, for which she had posed when she and Ballance had an affair in the 1970s. Internet Entertainment Group (IEG), which had purchased the photos, subsequently posted them on its website. IEG was already known at the time for making available to subscribers a sex tape of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. The Schlessinger photos were originally available only to subscribers to the IEG website, but predictably, the photos later appeared on different free sites in varying forms.

  101. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

If you really want a little entertainment, do a google search for “laura schlessinger nude photos”. First she tried to lie her way out of them then she changed her story and told the world that she was a “changed woman”. She changed into a woman who entered into a long term affair with a married man. Wow, change is good!

  102. tombaker Says:

Yikes! - there they are - not a bad-lookin’ gal, but clearly crazy as all-get-out.

Tacky - just like the rest of those Stepford Right zombie-ladies. All gussied up and gooned on prescriptions and chadonnay, busily chattering behind the backs of anyone less vain than they.

  103. chieromancer Says:

Someone seduce her husband so she has to eat her words.

  104. liberal-31 Says:

Dr. Schlessinger, Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, Melanie Morgan, Laura Ingram, and all the other female right wing nut jobs make me sick. Dr. Laura is just like Bill O’Reilly–acting all high and mighty and the supposed arbiter of moral values when she has none herself. And what we Hannity griping about in the video, anyway?
