The rapidly falling dollar “marked a milestone in Japan as it fell below 100 yen for the first time in 12 years” amid growing concerns about the health of the U.S. economy.
“The U.S. federal government ran a monthly budget deficit of $175.56 billion in February, a record for any month, the Treasury Department said Wednesday.”
Sixty percent of Americans think the Iraq war was a mistake, according to a new USA Today poll. The same number also favors a timetable for troop withdrawal, regardless of the situation in Iraq, while 54 percent believe that history will judge the war as mostly or a total failure. A Pew poll found that 53 percent of Americans think the U.S. will ultimately achieve its goals in Iraq.
“A barrage of rockets targeting an American military base in southern Iraq on Wednesday morning killed three U.S. soldiers, bringing to 12 the number of Americans killed in Iraq in the past three days.”
Top FBI officials “repeatedly approved the use of ‘blanket’ records demands to justify the improper collection of thousands of phone records.” These blanket demands — which do not require the approval of a judge — were used at least 11 times in 2006 alone, “as a quick way to clean up mistakes” made since 9/11.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), traveling to Europe next week, said he wouldn’t discuss differences with President Bush while abroad. “There are obvious differences,” he said. “I certainly won’t articulate them overseas.”
When a Justice Department proposed rule requiring U.S. contractors “to report waste, fraud or abuse they encounter while doing work for the government” was published by the White House Office of Management and Budget last year, it included “language that would exempt from such reporting all U.S. contractors who do work overseas” including in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has touted the “equitable” sharing of oil revenues as evidence of Iraq’s progress. But “as concern grows that the government is not capitalizing on its oil, McCain is staying on the sidelines.” He has refused to sign a letter by fellow Senate Armed Service Committee members “demanding a full audit of how the Iraqi government was spending its oil revenue.”
The Pentagon has recorded nearly 50 videotapes of its interrogations of terrorism suspects Jose Padilla and Ali al-Marri, “the first official acknowledgment that military interrogators had videotaped some sessions with detainees.”
And finally: Most senators and aides are dreading the “vote-o-rama” planned for the next few days. The dozens are votes will mostly focus on “obscure procedural motions.” Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), however, is “truly thrilled at the prospect” of these votes. “I’m going to get my percentages up!” he gleefully told Roll Call, reportedly “pumping his arms in the air in the universal gesture of celebration.” During his bid for the GOP presidential nomination, his voting record took a hit; he missed 28.2 percent of votes.
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.
College Students, Veterans, Old Folks Shut Down Capitol Hill
Today was the day for Stop-Loss Congress. We notified every Congress Member and Senator over the past two days that they were being stop-lossed and denied permission to leave until they end the occupation of Iraq…A group of activists dressed as Ghosts of War stood and spoke in the Senate and closed the place down - 10 arrests.
Then groups of dozens of people, primarily college students, split up and blocked intersections and garage exits around the Hill…Dozens were arrested, most of them college students, some Vets for Peace and other old folks too.

March 13th, 2008 at 9:01 amCorn-Based Ethanol Could Worsen “Dead Zoneâ€
WASHINGTON - Growing more corn to meet the projected U.S. demand for ethanol could worsen an expanding “dead zone†in the Gulf of Mexico that is bad for crawfish, shrimp and local fisheries, researchers reported on Monday.
The dead zone is a huge area of water — some 7,700 square miles — that forms above the continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico every summer. It contains very low levels of oxygen.
The dead zone starts in Midwestern corn country when farmers fertilize their fields with nitrogen. The fertilizer run-off flows down the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico, making algae bloom on the surface and cutting oxygen to creatures that live on the bottom.

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on Wednesday canceled plans for broad public release of a study that found no pre-Iraq war link between late Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the al Qaida terrorist network.
Rather than posting the report online and making officials available to discuss it, as had been planned, the U.S. Joint Forces Command said it would mail copies of the document to reporters — if they asked for it. The report won’t be posted on the Internet.

Throw a few for me, Tobie.
March 13th, 2008 at 9:16 amThe first time I lived in Japan (1962-1964) the rate was 360 Yen = $1.00. The last time I lived in Japan (1998-2000) the dollar went down as low as 108 Yen = $1.00. In those days I paid the equivalent of about $5.00 for one Fuji apple (big as the average two Fuji apples here). Things were extremely expensive in Tokyo and, if, as a U.S. Government employee I hadn’t gotten a fair chunk of a dollar supplement, life would have been very difficult. Americans living or travelling abroad must be hard hit unless they are very wealthy.
The unprecedented decline of the dollar under the pathetic budgeting of the current deficit spending administration is weakening the US internationally and has real implications for our national security, not the ex-Eli cheerleaders or former playboy-pilot candidates seem to understand.
Take us back to those budget surpluses we enjoyed during the Clinton years, PLEASE!
March 13th, 2008 at 9:17 amThe Gaza Bombshell
After failing to anticipate Hamas’s victory over Fatah in the 2006 Palestinian election, the White House cooked up yet another scandalously covert and self-defeating Middle East debacle: part Iran-contra, part Bay of Pigs. With confidential documents, corroborated by outraged former and current U.S. officials, David Rose reveals how President Bush, Condoleezza Rice, and Deputy National-Security Adviser Elliott Abrams backed an armed force under Fatah strongman Muhammad Dahlan, touching off a bloody civil war in Gaza and leaving Hamas stronger than ever.

Wow, a blanket invitation to steal, courtesy of the US government. No matter that it is our tax dollars they are stealing.
I hope one of the first things that Obama does is as President will be to go after these contractors and prosecute them for fraud. Not to mention making them pay back the billions they have stolen from us.
Remember folks, this money they are stealing is borrowed money that our children and grandchildren will be required to repay.
March 13th, 2008 at 9:20 amIsn’t it ironic…
Violence, displacement, genocide, and torture has not mattered enough to turn the tide of public opinion wholly against this war. We should all be ashamed because of it.
But every day, as the implications of the war’s effect on our economy become more evident, the rallying cry “Bring them home,” has taken on public proportions.
Every week our troops are there, it costs U.S. taxpayers another $12 billion of quickly-dwindling treasure. So now, those taxpayers are beginning to wake up and oppose the war. It finally got to their brain, through their wallets, not their hearts or their minds, or their spirits, but through their wallets…
Too bad it took so long. Remember back on the days when Wolfovitz was calling this a 60 billion dollar war, that Iraq had so much oil, they would be able to foot the bill?
That was half a TRILLION dollars ago, when our dollar was worth a big chunk more than it is now.
How did it all happen so fast, with no authority powerful enough to everride this Republican-engineered descent into historic indebtedness.
It would be accurate to call this no-bid, book-cooking era in the history of our nation, The Bush Tribulation.

March 13th, 2008 at 9:37 amOT, but since TP has a ban on all things “Hillary”, I’ll post this here.
Did anyone see Keith Olbermann on Countdown last night with his special remark on the Hillary/Geraldine issue? Boy, he was on fire and he was right on the mark. She has the nerve to jump on Obama because one of his supporters (Farakhan) said something vile a long time ago, and it wasn’t even said about Hillary. And yet she can give Geraldine Ferraro a pass to make racist remarks about Obama and make the outrageous suggestion that he is only where he is because of his race. The one obvious fact that neither Hillary Rove Clinton nor Geraldine Ferraro can see is that if Obama was not Black, he would have blown Hillary out of the water a long time ago. It’s amazing that he has gotten as far as he has in the race for the White House considering the fact that he is Black.
Geraldine Ferraro is nothing more than a bitter old woman. She knows the only reason why she was put on the ticket with Mondale is because she is a woman. She was way less qualified at that time to be on the ticket than Obama is today. She tried twice to become a Senator and lost both times.
So, TP, when are you going to get real and report the real news and Hillary Rove Clinton’s throwing the kitchen sink at Obama IS news as is the Geraldine Ferraro situation.

WASHINGTON — Defying the Bush administration, the House is expected to vote today on legislation that would expand the government’s wiretapping authority but stop short of giving telecommunications companies immunity from lawsuits for helping U.S. spy agencies.
The planned vote represents the latest in a series of showdowns between congressional Democrats and President Bush over a controversial espionage operation that involves monitoring international e-mail and telephone traffic that travels through networks in the United States.

March 13th, 2008 at 9:43 amBilbo: I made a point to watch Keith’s scathing condemnation of Hillary last night. Impressive and absolutely on mark. Ferraro is a disgraceful bigot who has never recovered from her national slapdown due to her husband’s dirty business dealings. She saw the coveted prize so handily removed from her grasp, ostensibly thanks to him, and she’s bitter and angry about it since then. Frankly, I was never convinced that she ever had a brain in her head even back then so it didn’t bother me that she got nowhere politically.
Hillary intentionally permitted this bigoted hate remark to hang in the air while she feigned ignorance about it. Of course, it has now backfired in her face and will cost her dearly in the coming states. But, for many of us, this is the “true hillary” - someone who is a user and who will lie to get her way. We saw it firsthand in the Florida primaries where they all agreed to NOT campaign; yet Hillary broke her word and campaigned the day before the primary there. Then she attempts to use this “bogus win” as something significant when the majority of dem voters didn’t even turn out because they knew their vote wouldn’t count. She’s a very slippery eel.

Corn ethanol is a boon for the agrobusiness and fossil fuel industries, but it does nothing to reduce carbon emissions.
There is, however, a new discovery that could make cellulosic ethanol an affordable and carbon-neutral option - an enzyme found in a bacteria native to the Chesapeake Bay:

Of course, Hillary is spinning it, but Geraldine will be known for two things; a token woman candidate & a rascist.
Comment by Zimzone
She did resign, last night. But you need to read her resignation letter. She said she is resigning so that she can speak freely. She thinks that way what she says won’t slop over onto Hillary. Until such time as Hillary Rove Clinton condemns and repudiates Geraldine Ferraro, every racist thing she says will fall into Clinton’s lap.
She made Obama “repudiate” Farrakhan along with condemning him and what Farrakhan said many years ago had nothing to do with Hillary or the campaign. The only way Hillary can pull her bacon out of the fire on this one (and I may already be too late) will be to completely repudiate and condemn Geraldine Ferraro.
March 13th, 2008 at 9:53 amNot surprised about the tactics from Mrs. Clinton. She’s no stranger to hard ball campaigning. I am dissappointed in TP for ignoring this topic. It gives ammo to the those who say this site isn’t truthful.

Don’t you care that Hillary is fracturing the Democratic Party? Don’t you care that Hillary seems to think that the world would be better off with a McCain presidency than an Obama presidency?
March 13th, 2008 at 9:56 amI made a point to watch Keith’s scathing condemnation of Hillary last night. Impressive and absolutely on mark.

Since Keith has now shown that he will go after centrist Democrats when they act in atrociously disgusting ways that hurt the party will he also go after Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer etc.?
What these three have done to the party outweighs the dirty tricks Hillary is using in her campaign a thousand to one.
Reid, Pelosi and Hoyer could’ve stopped the War but chose not to. They could’ve followed through on investigations of high crimes but chose not to. They could’ve acted as a “check” on the Executive Branch but chose not to.
Where’s the outrage Keith?
March 13th, 2008 at 9:56 amIt is amazing that Bush still denies that our current economic conditions is linked to spending billions daily on Iraq war. Bush denied latley that Iraq has anything to do with our bad economic situation now.
If our government’s Chief Executive Officer can’t see that spending all these billions of dollars on wars using borrowed money from abroad,is the big reason of what we are in economically ,then we as people are in deep trouble.
March 13th, 2008 at 9:56 amOne other thing that troubles me is Hillary’s use of the phrase “as far as I know” which is just another cheap shot of the old genre so pathetically overt that it makes one gag. March 13th, 2008 at 9:57 amthought the same thing Bilbo. There was a 5 minute debate on rejecting vs. denouncing all brought on by Clinton’s outrage at someone supporting Obama.

Dennis ALWAYS makes votes like these for reasons of conscience or technicality. While I haven’t heard his explanation I bet it’d be along the lines that we already have multiple laws that state waterboarding is torture so there’s no need to vote on it again. He’d probably say that this legislation will be used as an excuse not to prosecute those who ordered waterboarding and doesn’t want any part of it.

Doesn’t it bother you that Hillary seems to think that a McCain Presidency is better than an Obama presidency?
-Yes
Do you think this country can survive four more years of Republicans in the White House?
-survive? Yes I don’t think America will collapse into ruble if McCain wins. Do I want to see McCain win? No. Who do I think is the best candidate? Obama - I have said that repeatedly.
- -
“We “haters†hang out here because this is where we choose to express our views. If you don’t like it, tough $hit.” Yep. Tough shit for me.
- -
So, the issue I have with the Hillary Haters is that there are far more pressing problems. When I go to the gas station I see and feel the cost of increasing gas prices. When I turn on the TV, I see the repricussions of the failed Iraq War. I see and feel the decrease in the value of the dollar. These are all tangible and they affect me personally in ways that the words of Hillary Clinton never can.
Yet you want to focus on the bliovations of a politician.
Personally, I also find it amusing (albeit, in a very disappointing way) that I am so criticized by my fellow “liberals.” I have consistently posted liberal leaning commentary, yet once I stroll off the approved viewpoint I am attacked. And what am I attacked for? Saying there should be tolerance of Hillary Clinton. Shit, I think I’ve even been called a “troll” for expressing a slightly different, yet still consistently liberal, opinion. Truly amazing.

“The legal review came after Colombia claimed it has captured documents suggesting that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was in the process of providing $300 million to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.”
In my opinion, it would be a very big mistake to take such a provocative move. Do we want to pick a fight with most of South America?
Besides, according to Greg Palast, the “300″ number found in an email in the seized computer probably referred to the 300 hostages that Chavez was in the process of negotiating release for - NOT $300 Million! Yet the MSM gobbled up the official U.S. inference.

And, what is bad with one world government? It can’t be worse than the one of GW for the USA.
Meanwhile, assume your bend over position and be prepared to receive more Bush “great presidency action”.
