Cheney Five Years Ago: ‘We Will, In Fact, Be Greeted As Liberators’

This Sunday will mark the fifth anniversary of Vice President Dick Cheney’s disastrous and uninformed prediction that U.S. troops would be greeted as liberators in Iraq:

CHENEY: Now, I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators. [3/16/03]

That same month — in March 2003 — McCain was parroting the Bush administration’s rosy talk, repeating on many occasions that “we will be greeted as liberators.” Cheney and the administration ignored numerous pre-war intelligence analyses which warned “that the U.S. would face armed resistance from Iraqis following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime.”

After the war began and an insurgency took hold in Iraq, the two cheerleaders of the Iraq invasion attempted to argue that they had been proven right – that the U.S. was greeted as liberators in Iraq. In Sept. 2003, Cheney told Tim Russert that “we have” been welcomed by “most Iraqis.” And following Cheney’s lead once again, McCain said in Jan. 2007, “We were greeted as liberators,” adding that the Iraq war was “easy.”

I’m willing to bet money that by this fall W and Co. will start a war with Iran, using our navy, in order to swing the election to the GOP.

    Mark my words.

Conquistadors greeted as liberators, not likely.

Seems like it doesn’t matter how wrong these Reich-wingers are, or how often they’re wrong. There are still idiots out there that will believe their lies and distortions of truth.

I’m sure that Iraq feels we are “liberators” much in the same way the Estonians and Latvians felt about the Soviet Union after the USSR liberated them from Hitler…

No ifs, ands, or BUTTS, Wayne?

  19. liberal traitor says:

ok, I guess I’ll try this again because for some reason it didn’t show up:

Ahh yes, another item on the neverending list of completely accurate neocon predictions.

I can’t remember who said this, don’t know if it was Botch or Cheney, however it belongs on that list with the liberators comment:

Someone prophesied that if we attack/bomb Iran the populace will rise up, depose Ahmadinejad and the Mullahs, plaster our soldiers with kisses and roses in gratitude, and magically set up a pro-West democracy, JUST LIKE IRAQ.

  20. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Mr. Cheney, I’ll repeat what my good friend Zooey said, but without nearly so much respect.

Oh yeah, we liberating them alright, 1,000,000 liberated from their lives, 4,000,000 liberated from their homes, liberated the rest from secular cleansing, jobs, clean water, electricity, food, etc.

And we liberated ourselves from what we be 3,000,000,000,000 dollars, that could have given everyone healthcare, rebuilt New Orleans, rebuilt and repaired many bridges, schools, roads.

Yeah, we’re liberators alright, just not good ones.

And can someone explain to me again how:

Getting a blowjob and lying about it gets you impeached.

Hiring a hooker finds you resigning.

But lying us into war, and about 957 other crimes, gets you re-elected with libraries and book deals thrown in for good measure?

  24. McWars says:

Five years later, Cheney and Bush are so welcome to Iraq they must appear without notice.

** Sorry, didn’t see that you posted on this topic. I thought Republicans are against welfare. Oh yeah, they’re against social welfare, not corporate welfare.

Bear Stearns should just be allowed to collapse under the weight of their own corruption.

  37. Jackie says:

Dick has been very busy in the pass 7 years working with Foreign investors and US Billionaires to get US taxpayers money. It worked very well for him as we see the Carlyle Group cleaned out the US Treasury. Now as we see Dubai was just sand 5 years ago, but with the input of the US Treasury money, it is now a country who pays for all it’s citizens education and health care. Yes Dubai is even loaning money to US banks. Talk about the biggest Robbery to the United States it was done by the current Administration while Americans did nothing. Smart move on Dicks part as he paid the Media to spread propaganda and while lining up corrupt people in every branch of Government. Yes even the Supreme Court has Republican puppets that will do as their told by the Republican party. Now if McCain becomes President look for the Middle East to have their own Stock Market and their currency will take over the US dollar. But all this is of no interest to the American people they just want a hand out and those rebate checks.

Because even Americans too obtuse to understand anything else can understand sex. Furthermore, sex scandals receive more press than any other kind of scandal because SEX SELLS. Good for ratings, you know.

A classic (and glaring) example of this was shown during the confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas. America yawned when Thomas mangled his interpretation of natural law. American nodded off when Thomas said (with a straight face) that he had “no opinion” on abortion. But as soon as Anita Hill showed up, America sat bolt upright and grabbed their popcorn.

    Absolutely, they should.

These wing-nuts can’t even keep to their own philosophy. I thought they said that nothing is guaranteed, that one should be rewarded based on merit.

Well, they’re being rewarded because of failure, while the individuals — those directly affected by their shady lending practices — are left suffering. This was a failure determined by their private sector cohort — Wall Street.

Our government is now a corporate support hotline.

BAGHDAD, March 2, 2008 (Reuters) – Pomp and ceremony greeted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on his arrival in Iraq on Sunday, the fanfare a stark contrast to the rushed and secretive visits of his bitter rival U.S. President George W. Bush.

Actually what Cheney was referring to was being greeted as liberators by oil execs at their next secret meeting for liberating oil from that $40 a barrel ceiling.

The GOP is experiencing some financial difficulty.
It seems they spend more than they take in (no suprise there!)

I think they are having trouble meeting payroll, so they sometimes have to allocate their resources to the more heavily trafficed sites.
