McCain: al Qaeda may tip election against me.

Today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he fears that al Qaeda may attempt to increase attacks in Iraq in September or October in order to try to tilt the U.S. election against him:

Yes, I worry about it,” McCain said. “And I know they pay attention because of the intercepts we have of their communications … The hardest thing in warfare is to counter someone or a group of individuals who are willing to take their own lives in order to take others.”

McCain’s fearmongering is a common right-wing tactic. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Dick Cheney, John Bolton, and the White House all suggested al Qaeda was rooting for Democrats in 2006 and 2008.

Why would they waste their energy on a foregone conclusion?

  2. Badmoodman says:

Well, with that Muslim named B. Hussein running for president it just stands to reason al-Qaeda would want a “vigorous advocate” for themselves in the White House.

    Eyefreakinroll.

Just like Osama’s video in 2004 scared people into voting for a second W term?
If I were you, I’d worry about the economy, stupid.

Assuming he defines Al Qaeda as all Democrats, most Independents, and the few rational remaining Republicans…he’s probably got a reason to be worried.

  5. MapleStreet says:

Say What ??? It is funny that the other side is saying that the repubs are likely to manufacture an attack just to show that the terror card is real and we should therefore elect a hawk.

BTW – the new look is quite nice.

  14. Xisithrus says:

But I thought he wanted a 100 year war?

What kind of flip-flopping is this. He wants war, but doesnt want it before the elections because it makes him look bad?

I hate to say it but this guy isnt making sense, at all.

  15. Wayne A. Schneider says:

According to a Media Matters item:

Reuters reported in March that an apparent Al Qaeda letter stated that the group supports President George W. Bush’s reelection: “The statement said it supported President Bush in his reelection campaign, and would prefer him to win in November rather than the Democratic candidate John Kerry, as it was not possible to find a leader ‘more foolish than you (Bush), who deals with matters by force rather than with wisdom.’ … [The letter added,] ‘Kerry will kill our nation while it sleeps because he and the Democrats have the cunning to embellish blasphemy and present it to the Arab and Muslim nation as civilization. … Because of this we desire you (Bush) to be elected.’”

So this idea that al Qaeda want the Democrats to win in November is not based on facts. That they a Republican to win is supported by the facts. Well, they want a republican as foolish as Bush, and I think they’ve found their man in Sen John McCain.

Only R’s are going to keep paying blood money to Iraqi militias. Only R’s are going to keep sending plane-loads of cash. Only R’s are going to protect the Saudis, so they can gather up terror $ and breed more terrorists.

And why is it that Republicans utilize fear to motivate people for political means?

As John Stuart Mill famously observed, “Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.”

That is why they do it, Tommy. Because the people whose support they are trying to get are stupid. I believe it really is that simple. If they try to make intelligent arguments for their views (assuming that’s even possible), they come across to the stupid conservatives they are trying to woo as being pointy-headed liberals. (Stupid people generally do not like smart people.)

  25. Parrotlover77 says:

Interesting talking point, considering that (the real) Al Qaeda would rather us be in Iraq since it (1) helps their recruiting efforts, (2) helps reduce the number of troops in other areas where Al Qaeda actually resides, and (3) hurts US military recruitment and readiness, and (4) prevents the National Guard forces from being on-hand to help if another attack were to take place on US soil.

  26. Leftside Annie says:

Oh my God. I HATE these people!!! If I had my way about it – I’d round up every single damned one of them and drop them off in downtown Baghdad – let them “support our troops” – just like our damned retarded chimp of a president – who thinks war is “romantic.”

For the love of GOD, these people are just too bloodydamned stupid to be allowed to live!!!!!

  27. dim wit says:

McCave: “Listen friend, when I come by I have a special package for you from George. It’s those potato rolls for the hot dogs…George tells me you have a hard time finding them over there.”
Bin Laden: “Yes, it’s a real bltch, tell George thank you. You’ll have to get me his address in Paraguay so I can send him a fruit basket or something, it’s the least I could do for such a dear friend. See you at the bbq, John! Oh, and tell Dick not to be such a stranger now that he’s back at the healm with Halliburton Dubai!”

Oh, give me a break. A massive Al-Qaeda attack against the United States between now and the election would be McCain’s nirvana. 73. JMOHR says:

AQ wants McCain to win this election. The whole purpose of the attacks on the United States was to draw our country into a quagmire in the Middle East. AQ, which traces its origins to Muslim opposition to the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, merely desires to repeat the same process of bleeding a super power.

It is amazing that the tactic initially failed. The US attacked Afghanistan, defeated the Taliban and sent AQ into hiding. The world (including Muslim nations) united behind the US. Indeed, the street crowds of Iran supported the invasion. The Afghan people rejoiced in the overthrow of the Taliban. It took Bush and the neocons to ignore implementing an effective nation building plan and the diversion of attention and destruction of Muslim goodwill by the war in Iraq to turn this all around. We now see the quagmire and the cost to the US. This is exactly what AQ wanted. Shortly before the 2004 election we saw Bin Laden issue a video mouthing Democratic talking points. CIA analysts asked why Bin Laden would do this since it would certainly help Bush when the election was leaning to Kerry. Then they recognized the tactic. The wanted Bush to win since his stupidity and policies would assist his goal. The same is true for McCain.

The former treasurer for the National Republican Congressional Committee diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars — and possibly as much as $1 million — of the organization’s funds into his personal accounts, GOP officials said yesterday, describing an alleged scheme that could become one of the largest political frauds in recent history.

For at least four years, Christopher J. Ward, who is under investigation by the FBI, allegedly used wire transfers to funnel money out of NRCC coffers and into other political committee accounts he controlled as treasurer, NRCC leaders and lawyers said in their first public statement since they turned the matter over to the FBI six weeks ago.

The boy happens to be real, and his “stage name” is Benjamin Nicholas. One of the politicos Big Head DC has learned he’s alleged to have been involved with is the married Sen. Trent Lott, 66, who unexpectedly announced his retirement on Monday. Lott is well-known to have been against a plethora of gay rights issues throughout his terms in Congress. He was also good friends with Sen. Larry Craig throughout his time in Congress.

Nicholas told Big Head DC today via e-mail that he didn’t want to go on the record to talk about his dealings with Lott, because, said Nicholas, “Trent is going through his fair share of scrutiny right now and I don’t want to add to it.” However, e-mail and other records confirm that the two have met on at least two occasions.

“All I can say at this point is no comment,” Nicholas told us. “It’s the professional thing for me to do.”

  92. Bluestocking says:

I’ve learned from experience that one of the most important questions to ask in situations like this is “who stands to benefit the most from this?” If another terrorist attack were to take place here in the United States before the Presidential election, who would be most likely to benefit from it?

Contrary to McCain’s claim, the past six-odd years would suggest that the Republicans (although perhaps not McCain himself) would actually be more likely to benefit from this than the Democrats would. Especially if the putative attack occurred within a few weeks or days of the election, it is by no means impossible — in fact, it’s quite likely — that the elections would be postponed allowing Bush to remain in power until an election was held. It’s possible that he might even declare a national emergency, which would permit him if he so chose to declare martial law and suspend most civil liberties. Even if this did not happen, the Republicans have consistently positioned themselves for the past six-odd years as being the party which is “tough on terror” while painting the Democrats as weak — and a sizable number of Americans have been willing to accept that premise without asking many questions in the name of security, even when the administration has compromised their civil liberties and attempted to do end-runs around the Constitution. Depending on the scope of the putative attack, I’m not confident that enough people would be thinking clearly enough to ask critical questions — perhaps the most important of these being, “Since we’ve been told for the past six years that everything the Bush administration has been doing has been for the purpose of keeping us safe, how did someone still manage to attack us?”

McCain’s ego is so out of proportion that it’s all about him.

The real truth is however, McCain’s objective of a permanent occupation of Iraq dovetails perfectly with al Qeada’s strategy of bringing down the US by getting it bogged down in futile unwinable military imbroglios just like Iraq. It’s the lesson they learned from how the Afghanistan war helped bring down the Soviet Union.

McCain is without a doubt al Qeada’s preferred candidate.
