The AP reports that one-third of women in the military and six percent of men said they were sexually harassed, according to the latest Pentagon survey:
The figure for women was worse than the previous finding several years ago but better than a similar survey taken in 1995, the Defense Department said in a report Friday. […]
There were 2,688 sexual assaults reported last year by people in uniform, the figures showed. That was down about 9 percent from the 2,947 reported the year before. […]
Reports of sexual assault reports had jumped by about 24 percent in 2006 and nearly 40 percent in 2005. Officials attributed the increases partly to more aggressive efforts to encourage victims to come forward.

Take a hundred thousand guys who have no outlet and add a few women. It is going to happen. And the brass ignores it so they think they pretty much have the ok. I say, let the gays in so the guys can feel some of the fear!

March 14th, 2008 at 11:15 pmDoc, that is true, I read an article about women DYING because they were too afraid to go get a drink of water (in the desert) because they felt they would be raped. And there has been no crackdown on these bastards.
March 14th, 2008 at 11:19 pmYou send fewer troops than are required to occupy a country.
You don’t give them the protective equipment they need.
You don’t give them the medical attention they need when they are injured and sent home.
Water supplies for the troops are left to private comanies with no vested interest in the troops well being.
You keep them long past the agreed tour of duty using dirty tricks like stop loss.
You ignore their inablility to adjust to coming home and resuming life.
You not only allow but encourage an atmosphere of domination that results in outrages such as abu grhaib, rapes and murders of local citizenery, etc.
You allow our service women to be treated like chattel.
all for a mere 12 Billion dollars a month. It’s a damned miracle that you can get one single soldier to serve without a draft.
March 14th, 2008 at 11:28 pmAmericans don’t wont to hear about soldiers dying now in Iraq it upsets Americans to hear the numbers. Now as for female soldiers who are raped, harassed and murdered not one reporter and Law Makers cares as I have noticed no reports have been ever blogged on any site or reported in the Media. We have had many rapes and sexual harassment charges brought against US soldiers. Look if the Government and the American people don’t care that Iraq woman and children have been raped and murdered by US soldiers do you really think they care about female soldiers. Americans would rather hear about a sex sandal and make a prostitute a celebrity then deal with the truth. Republicans are very busy bringing down as many Democrats as possible to make sure the crimes they are committing continue. All Americans care about it a hand out as with the rebate checks. Our soldiers are given dirty water by KBR yet you don’t hear a Law Maker or an American complain, now Spitzer’s personal life is more important and now it’s time for the Media to destroy is wife for the Republican Party. So Support our Troops is lip service and believe me the emails I get from the troops in Iraq know the American people don’t give a da– about them or their families.
March 14th, 2008 at 11:30 pmI made the mistake of going past mainstream coverage tonight and saw that they are reporting quite different facts. Reporting that reports are lower than ever before.
March 15th, 2008 at 12:24 amIt is too bad we have nothing better than Pravda collecting, and disseminating, the propaganda of garbage.
Off Topic- but if you haven’t read this story yet I think you’ll find it very interesting.

Rodham Gin does not sincerely believe the point it pretends to make.
March 15th, 2008 at 12:34 amit = they. Sorry no disrespect intended
March 15th, 2008 at 12:39 amMy 3 daughters have been harassed at work, in college, at clubs and just about anywhere they go. All three feel the need to carry pepper spray and 2 of them have cc permits and carry 38’s to protect them from me.
“Diane Rodham Gin”
Easy to make your own facts isn’t it diane?
March 15th, 2008 at 12:40 amWouldn’t your argument be much more effective if you hadn’t deliberately selected set of males to use as examples? Spare me the pretend outrage. I trust you sincerely care for the welfare of your children but I don’t buy the lack of an agenda totally unrelated to the question of male predatory behavior.
March 15th, 2008 at 12:48 amRodham Gin-
March 15th, 2008 at 12:51 amI’m sure your daughters are beautiful and intelligent… that doesn’t change the fact that our military has a realproblem with sexual harassment. Your daughters have a right to feel safe, but talk to a women who has returned from deployment in Iraq sometime… have you? I have, and they both have said that they neverfelt as unsafe and exposed as they did in Iraq in the military- and that’s just wrong.
All women deserve to feel safe, at home or deployed…
… and this Administration is ignoring the problem. That should make you mad Rodham Gin.

I’m surprised that only 1/3 reported abuse. My 3 daughters have been harassed at work, in college, at clubs and just about anywhere they go. All three feel the need to carry pepper spray and 2 of them have cc permits and carry 38’s. This isn’t a military problem. this is a predatory problem. Just look at the men in the news who feel they have the right to abuse or otherwise take advantage of women. Clinton, Spitzer, Hart, the Kennedy brothers just to name a few. Some how they all feel an entitlement to their animal instincts.
Then you must be totally furious about what’s happening to the women serving this country.
What are you willing to do to help?

Nothing, of course. My bet is that his post is a fraud.
Our troll “Gin” probably thought it was funny and clever to pretend being concerned, while taking a swipe at the D’s who have been caught in some sex scandal; conflating marital infidelity with actual sexual harassment.
Twits like him cannot tell the difference between consenting adults having sex, and a woman being preyed upon by a sexual predator.

Who do you think you’re kidding? You’re so hateful and bitter, you can’t even stand yourself.
Hey, I’m sorry you’re in a wheelchair. That war was wrong, and this war is wrong.
Are you out there protesting the war? F_ck no. That might be frickin’ useful.
Give it a rest.

March 15th, 2008 at 4:01 pmGin Blossom:
As to your whining abourt JFK/LBJ and Vietnam, first off, we, (the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, note the spelling asswipe, ran LBJ out of office because of his war mongering. What are republicans doing and bush? And speaking of bush, if you’re so against people in power lying us into wars, why do you support bush? And if you really fought in Vietnam, and got injured, why do you support a deserter who elbowed his way to the front of the line at the national guard office, which bumped someone else at the end of the line into Vietnam? And why do you support a party that routinely smears veterans when it suits their purpose? Veterans like McCrazy and Kerry and Gore, not to mention what they did Max Cleland a severely wounded Vietnam vet. Lastly, more US soldiers died under Nixon’s rule than LBJ and JFK combined.
March 15th, 2008 at 5:34 pmGin Swiller sez the sexual assault problem is just as bad everywhere, thus watering down the problem in the US military. Isn’t the US military supposed to be better than everywhere? Aren’t there supposed to be controls, structure, etc?
March 15th, 2008 at 5:35 pmThe military is a subculture where this behavior is more tolerated than in the dominant culture.
I find it amazing that you have some of whatever is required to make your point in all situations……when the thread is about harrassement of women you have daughers, when you don’t want to answer hard questions you are suddenly a disabled war veteran.
Convenient and unverifiable cries for pity only make you look more pathetic.
Just the fact that you would play such a card tells me that you would do anything or say anything. If you were really in a wheelchair you would never have used it in this way.
You dishonor legitimate veterans with disablilities. You have earned my disgust with this abuse of your freedom of speech.
I have read your posts in the past and have no reason to believe anything you say and I find your behavior in this thread to be something akin to criminal behavior…..
people who’s minds work like yours will bilk old folks out of their meager savings. You are the slime on the bottom of pond scum.
March 15th, 2008 at 6:15 pmThis is disgusting and unacceptable. The military has rates of sexual violence against women higher than that on the city streets. And, our rates in the US on the city streets are already horrendous.
I recently wrote a blog post about this very issue:
The Military, The War, and Violence Against Women
If I had a daughter, I wouldn’t let her within 100 feet of a military recruiting station. Of course, I probably wouldn’t let my son within 100 feet either.
Violence against women is not a women’s issue. It is a human issue. Men must make a strong stance against these abhorrent crimes. It is a disgrace.
March 15th, 2008 at 8:39 pmI beg to differ, kbartoy.
Violence against women is a women’s issue AND a human issue.
March 15th, 2008 at 10:56 pmMy shrink has convinced me to get over it. I will not allow myself to get pushed down the street in a chair for somebody else’s agenda again. I post here and make fun of MOONBATS, I post there and make fun of WINGNUTS. What am I willing to do? Unfortunately this is about it anymore. That doesn’t mean I’ll stop.
March 16th, 2008 at 1:06 amZooey-
I meant to say that it is not JUST a women’s issue.
I think that men frequently hide behind things being a “women’s issue” and thus not in their realm.
And, I want to make sure that we understand this is a human issue.
