Gen. David Petraeus said yesterday that “Iraqi leaders have failed to take advantage of a reduction in violence to make adequate progress toward resolving their political difference.” Petraeus said “no one” in the U.S. and Iraqi governments feels Iraq’s leaders are making “sufficient progress.”
After President Bush “intervened at the 11th hour” to weaken the Environmental Protection Agency’s new smog standards, “Solicitor General Paul D. Clement warned administration officials late Tuesday night that the rules contradicted the EPA’s past submissions to the Supreme Court…As a consequence, administration lawyers hustled to craft new legal justifications for the weakened standard.”
Two and a half years after Hurricane Katrina, “tens of thousands of miserable homeowners are still waiting for their government rebuilding checks, and many complain they can’t even get their calls returned.” However, ICF International — the company contracted to distribute the checks — “is doing quite well for itself” by posting “strong profits,” going public, and landing “additional multimillion-dollar government contracts.”
Alaska’s Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Ted Stevens “introduced legislation Thursday that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge if the price of oil hits $125 a barrel.” Both senators hope “to capitalize on consumer concern” about rising gas prices.
The House and the Senate narrowly passed a $3 trillion spending plan yesterday, which would “increase spending on domestic programs like education, health care, veterans benefits and new energy technology,” while allowing President Bush’s tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans to expire in two years.
A Justice Department report reveals that the “FBI has increasingly used administrative orders to obtain the personal records of U.S. citizens rather than foreigners implicated in terrorism or counterintelligence investigations.” The FBI relied on “national security letters” to skirt the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
The media continues to repeat the false claim that President Bush sought cooperation from telecommunications companies to conduct domestic spying only after 9/11. In fact, the Bush administration approached telecommunications carriers months before 9/11.
“Anti-Semitism, including government-promoted hatred toward Jews and prejudice couched as criticism of Israel, has risen globally over the last decade, the State Department said on Thursday.”
And finally: The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank writes that yesterday, conservatives were acting like “like schoolgirls whispering among themselves in class” as they plotted their “secret” session on wiretapping. “Because of my clearance level, I’ve seen the secret information and information at other levels as well,” bragged Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO), who was organizing the meeting. Rep. David Obey (D-WI), however, was not impressed. “I was here for the secret sessions,” said Obey. “And given the mumbo jumbo that I heard,” he added, the main purpose was “to demonstrate the total uselessness of secret sessions.” Laughter erupted.

March 14th, 2008 at 9:53 amIs George Bush Responsible for Iraqi Prostitution Ring?
George Bush has been tied to a prostitution ring involving as many as 50,000 women and girls…The prostitutes, some as young as 13, are among the 1.2 million desperate Iraqis who fled to Syria after Bush’s invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to the U.K. Independent.
…Facing starvation, as many as 50,000 women and girls have been forced into prostitution in Syria alone, according to Hana Ibrahim of the Women’s Will Association. “70 percent to 80 percent of the girls working this business in Damascus today are Iraqis,” 23-year-old Abeer told the New York Times. ”The rents here in Syria are too expensive for their families. If they go back to Iraq they’ll be slaughtered, and this is the only work available.”

Kind of puts a hole in Ms. Charlotte Allen’s theory concerning why more people haven’t returned to New Orleans, doesn’t it? Let’s revisit the claim which she first made in 2005 and recently restated:
“I said Katrina was the best thing to happen to New Orleans because it finally opportunity to a huge number of New Orleans residents living in passive dependency on welfare to get out of New Orleans and change their lives for the better. Thousands of them did exactly that–which is why there hasn’t exactly been a huge flood of those former residents flocking back to live in passive dependency and do just that. New Orleans itself now has a chance to change into a more self-reliant city.”
Maybe the reason why at least some of these people haven’t returned to New Orleans yet is because they can’t afford to rebuild until they receive the money they were promised.
March 14th, 2008 at 10:09 amDo subprime loans create subprime cities?
Surging inequality and the rise in predatory lending
Over the last several decades, thanks largely to passage of the Community Reinvestment Act in 1977, enforcement of the federal Fair Housing Act, and compliance with a range of local, state, and national fair lending rules, many households and communities long denied conventional financial services have found access to credit. But today the rise in subprime and predatory lending has put many families and neighborhoods in financial jeopardy as default and foreclosure rates skyrocket, particularly in minority and low-income areas. Community groups, elected officials, bank regulators, and mortgage lenders themselves are debating how the nation should respond.

Isms such as racism, sexism, and anti-Semitism are usually in the eye of the beholder. Especially when the beholder is a multibillion dollar lobbying interest.
I found this sentence in the Reuters report particularly interesting:
This is a complete tautology. By this standard of anti-Semitism, it is impossible to criticize Israeli policy without “promoting prejudice.” Israel is, by design, a Jewish State. This means that even Jewish critics such as the ISM founders and the Refuseniks are anti-Semitic.

Subprime crisis makes Cleveland a ghost town
A city in America’s Midwest has taken some of the biggest US banks to court for hundreds of millions of dollars, claiming that their marketing of subprime home loans has reduced parts of the city to a ghost town.
Frank Johnson, the mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, has accused a group of 21 large banks and financial firms of triggering severe local housing problems by promoting the controversial loans.
Johnson says that subprime mortgages have turned Ohio into a “ghost town”
As most of the US experiences a housing slump, the number of mortgage foreclosures in Cleveland soared to 70,000 last year from 120 in 2002.

Stocks plunged early Friday as investors worried that a plan to ease a liquidity crisis at Bear Stearns Cos. indicates how severe credit troubles have become. Each of the major indexes lost more than 1.5 percent; the Dow Jones industrials fell about 200 points.
Investors were busy examining the plan from JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the New York Federal Reserve to provide secured funding to Bear Stearns for an initial period of 28 days. The move offers Bear Stearns relief from a sudden liquidity crunch and could help instill confidence in the stagnant credit markets.

Aside from the symantic argument between sufficient and great, what the hell is going on? One side of this administration thumps their chest and proclaims great strides as if democracy and peace are right around the corner. The other side of the same administration is saying there isn’t real movement.

Yeah, it kinda is anti-Semitism. You’re lumping people with many varying viewpoints on the occupation, the settlements, and other aspects of Israeli policy together and insulting them because they’re all of the same religion. Not all Jews – including Israeili Jews – are Zionists. Some of them are out there, side-by-side with Palestinians, protesting the settlements and the Apartheid Wall and the collective punishment of Ghazans.
I don’t tolerate this kind of blanket criticism of Christians or Muslims, and I don’t like it applied to Jews either. That’s the kind of free speech that makes it more difficult to criticize Israeli policy, by allowing AIPAC to label all critics as “anti-Semitic.”

Ignorant troll. Some facts. First, this will not take affect until 2010. That will give Obama a lot of time to make the tax code more fair. Second, I love how the Republicans call the removal of a tax cut a “tax increase”. All this is doing is taking the tax rate back to what it was before Bush cut taxes (while we are involved in the occupation of a foreign country). Finally, about the “tax cut” for the middle class. I am middle class and it didn’t amount to much for me. The only people who really benefited from Bush’s tax cuts were the wealthy and the uber wealthy.
March 14th, 2008 at 11:32 amCan’t speak for Missouri but keep in mind Ohio’s congressional delegation ranges from Kucinich to Boehner which pretty much sums up the divisions within the state. The Boner has a safe seat in the burbs between Cincinnati and Dayton where most of his upper middle to wealthy constituents are completely insulated from this administration’s foreign policy fubars and are mainly concerned with keeping their taxes down, keeping the mexicans out and making sure they never actuall have to meet a black person. That makes for a fertile compost pile from which this maggot emerged.

Is it “anti-Semitic” for me to state that you’re all dopey bastoods ?
I mean , you claim to be “God’s chosen people” , and you were all wandering around a friggin’ desert for half a century ; why didn’t “God” just point your way outta’ there , if you’re his/her “favorites” ?
I’m strictly talking about the bunk of those that refer to themselves as “God’s chosen people” ; not only is that idea insane , I was always told “God” loves everyone.
Is it that he/she “loves” some , moreso than others ?
Look , Israeli policy is a problem ; but don’t you see how inherently difficult it makes everything when you delusionally believe in religion ? Especially a religion that proclaims you are part of a “special group” , deemed that way by the “Lord” himself/herself ?

House Rejects Immunity in Eavesdropping Bill
By ERIC LICHTBLAU
Published: March 14, 2008
WASHINGTON — After its first secret session in a quarter-century, the House on Friday rejected retroactive immunity for the phone companies that took part in the National Security Agency’s warrantless eavesdropping program after the Sept. 11 attacks, and it voted to place greater restrictions on the government’s wiretapping powers.
The decision, by a largely party-line vote of 221 to 188, is one of the few times when Democrats have been willing to buck up against the White House on a national security issue. It also ensures that the months-long battle over the government’s wiretapping powers will drag on for at least a few more weeks and possibly much longer.
I’m… I’m speechless.
Are the Dems finally finding their spines?
March 14th, 2008 at 1:21 pmBTW, what is Petraeus doing in that picture, trying to describe the size of the perch George claims he caught last year?
March 14th, 2008 at 1:22 pmgg, another question for you. Can you explain why Bush would rather veto a bill and supposedly leave us vunerable to another terroist attack instead of signing a bill that would give complete immunity to the telecoms?
Either bush knows that no such thing like being left vunerable will actually happen and he’s just trying to scare the public, or he’s siding with the phone companies over the american public.
Which is it? Or do you have some third idea?
March 14th, 2008 at 1:23 pmTwo days ago, Thinkprogress highlighted the relationship with Senator John McCain and Pastor John Hagee:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/12/mccain-hagee-anti-gay/
I personally weighed in against McCain’s association with Hagee’s homophobic comments:
At the end of the thread, TP asks the question:
Now, in light of Senator Barrack Obama’s Pastor’s comments (the pastor that married Obama and Baptized his children; and the pastor of the church that Obama has attended for 20 years):
http://stoptheaclu.com/archives/2008/03/13/obamas-racist-pastor-god-damn-amerkkkica/
Is it now time for TP to ask the question:
Will Obama stand up now as “a man of principle” and specifically repudiate his pastor’s racist and anti-American comments?
March 14th, 2008 at 1:29 pmbackup, you do realize the comments you posted are 5 years old. I hope Obama acknowledges the words of this pastor aren’t his own just as I’m waiting to hear McCain say the words of his spiritual guide Parsley aren’t his own.
You also realize this can go on thru the ages of all the people who are linked to other people who have said less than what is being put out by the first person. If America was so put off by words by others Rove wouldn’t have had a job.
March 14th, 2008 at 1:38 pmback door asks:

Would you suggest that we follow your lead in bringing our country closer together……I submit that is you and your mentality that has caused the situation of which this whole incident in merely indicitive. In other words you caused it, now you want us to listen to you as to how to fix it……seriously…..
March 14th, 2008 at 2:25 pmYou’re wrong on this and here’s why:
This was not just some pastor that endorsed Obama. He is the pastor of the church that Obama attended for 20 years. He married Obama and his wife Michelle. His kids were baptized by this pastor.
I’m no fan of Ferraro, but when she implied that Obama is in the position he is in because he’s black, she was refudiated and cut from the Clinton campaign staff.
If you answer this charge by saying “Why should Obama have to separate himself from Wright, when McCain hasn’t distanced himself from Hagee” or try to shift attention somehow to the Bush administration and undercover agents; isn’t that politics as usual? Isn’t Barrack promising change. Is tit-for-tat leadership, or is it simply more of the same. The same that Obama has convinced us he’s going to change.
Pastor Wright suggests that one of the problems with the country, is that he believes it is run by rich, white people. Not a problem because of rich people, but because of rich ‘white’ people. It is plain and simple, a racist view.
I don’t believe these are Obama’s sentiments. I think Obama’s a good guy. But, the answer is simple. Obama needs to strongly repudiate the racist and anti-American comments Wright preaches. If he is the leader he wants us to believe he is, he has to do the hard work and make us understand that Pastor Wright’s comments are unacceptable. And Pastor Wright must be taken off Obama’s campaign staff (I believe he’s still on it.)
When TP asked if McCain should repudiate Hagee’s comment, I didn’t cheerlead for McCain or try to change the subject. I came out again Hagee’s homophobia and McCain’s association.
If Obama wants my vote, he needs to be more than the same old, same old.
Which progressives here will agree with me?
March 14th, 2008 at 2:36 pmbackup Says:
Which progressives here will agree with me?
Well, not me Captain. The two issues are completely different.
Hagee is preaching hatred of homsexuals….period.
Wright is railing against real, documented oppression. See civil rights, slavery, etc. See “Why did Americans see affirmative action as necessary?” Also Wright is railing against greed and oppression of all empovershed classes….not just black. Just because he points to the rich white people who have been responsible for it does not make it a racist statement….just a statement about racists as it should be clear to all that the blacks have suffered more than the other races in this country.
John Kennedy said that a rising tide floats all boats. He said that in response to white men complaining about efforts to help blacks in America. His point is a valid one today. If we help the lowest of our citizens, it raises all of our living standards……nes pas?
Just because we passed civil rights laws and had a short war on poverty does not mean that these problems have gone away. In fact they are more prevelant now than they were 10 years ago……you know I am going to say that the reason is the policy decisions of this republcan administration…..and that would be correct.
You get upset when people burn the flag….so
you may not see the difference but most rational people do.
March 14th, 2008 at 2:51 pmtest.
March 14th, 2008 at 4:24 pmFred, I agree with Kennedy, but I think you’re mistaken about why he said it. I believe he was responding to criticisms that his tax cuts would only benefit the wealthy. It a common republican refrain today. Check it out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_rising_tide_lifts_all_boats
Also, it sounds like you’ve forgotten the conversation, but a while back, we both agreed that flag burning is an important element of free speech. It makes me sad when someone burns a flag, but it is essential for those that disagree with American policy to be able to communicate it.
I disagree with your apathy for Pastor Wright’s divisive comments.
I believe that Obama will feel compelled to address them, more forcefully, fairly soon. If he doesn’t, I believe it will have a have a serious negative impact on his campaign. It will be interesting to see how Obama handles the situation.

March 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pmYour interpretation of JFK’s quote is in part right….tax cuts were part of what he was talking about and doing. The difference is who gained from those tax cuts as compared to the tax cuts under Reagan/bush/bush…
I agree about the flag burning…..it is sad when people feel so strongy that their country is betraying their values that they are compelled to make such an emotional statement….it does get everyone’s attention.
What exactly is it about Pastor Wright’s comments that you find so divisive? Detail it for me please.

On My Faith and My Church
Posted March 14, 2008 | 04:28 PM (EST)
The pastor of my church, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who recently preached his last sermon and is in the process of retiring, has touched off a firestorm over the last few days. He’s drawn attention as the result of some inflammatory and appalling remarks he made about our country, our politics, and my political opponents.
Let me say at the outset that I vehemently disagree and strongly condemn the statements that have been the subject of this controversy. I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies. I also believe that words that degrade individuals have no place in our public dialogue, whether it’s on the campaign stump or in the pulpit. In sum, I reject outright the statements by Rev. Wright that are at issue.

STAY COOL, BARACK.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:02 pmbackup, I stood at the marine monument the day that Bob Dole, Bush Sr. and others gave the strongest fight to date on the need for an amendment to ban flag burning. I stood, as a soldier just a short walk away from my barracks at Ft. Myer. Walking back after the speech I spoke with several fellow soldiers and the consensus was this. Mere words don’t diminish what the flag is and no action towards the flag will either. In fact, if one is so upset with this country that they feel the need to burn our flag to show their anger it won’t dimish what the flag is. The flag is made stronger by that because it is ultimately a symbol. A symbol of free speech, a symbol that cannot be destroyed by fire. Only from within.

March 14th, 2008 at 5:13 pmFred, I know you don’t believe it, but we probably agree on more than we disagree.
Here’s the thing about Pastor Wright.
He’s probably a great guy. But, if Barack wants to be the President of all Americans, he needs to show leadership and set the tone.
I’m not sure if I can convince you, but let me make a sincere effort.
Some examples: (I disagee with all these examples):
Black people are repressed by rich, white people.
We have so much crime in this country because of poor black
people.
Welfare payments have skyrocketed because of unwed teenage
black mothers.
I can’t get a job, because of all the illegal mexican people.
All these examples sound racist and divisive to me. The first of the examples is what Pastor Wright is saying.
I respect Pastor Wright’s right to express his opinion. Barack Obama needs to decide where he wants to take the country. If he’s apathetic about Wright’s comments, considering the relationship – it can be viewed as an endorsement. It’s the reason Ferrero was dropped from the Clinton campaign. Barrack is smart enough to provide the distance between him and Wright. The sooner he does it, the more it will look like his idea, and the more Presidential he’ll look.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:23 pmSo you basically don’t believe there is any racism in our country? You don’t think that black neighborhoods have worse schools than white ones?
There are many policy decisions made by rich white folks that do just that…..repress black neighborhoods.
I think that as blacks and latino’s become a larger and larger part of the decision making comunity that this will eventually change but I also believe that rich, white folks will fight that for as long as they can….just as they did in South Africa.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:33 pmI take it backup didn’t read Obama’s most recent opinion and words on this matter.
He’s clarified his position. Go find it and read it backup. you can do it.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:40 pmhellinabucket. It’s great to hear you say that.
Like most everybody here, I love the country. I also love the flag and what it represents, while I respect the nationalism of those non-Americans here.
I was a little embarrassed, but my wife told my mother-in-law that I tear up at the national anthem and at flag events. (I’m glad I was by myself, when I visited Arlington).
My mother-in-law spends alot of time at garage sales and found a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol (coincidentally, on my birthday, but four year before) for the Memorial Day Association of Minneapolis, courtesy of Senator Hurbert Humphrey. She gave it to me, because she thought I might like it.
It is my favorite material possession.
I agree you can’t make the flag stronger by banning the burning of it. It’s actually comforting to know the ideals it represents are so strong, burning it won’t diminish it.
March 14th, 2008 at 5:52 pmWhat exactly got you banned as CaptainMantastic?
Fred,
I don’t know what got me banned, but it wasn’t profanity, insults or threats.
I just assume that because most of my comments disagreed with the prevailing sentiment, that I probably got flagged for abuse quite a bit.
hellinabucket.
I’m going to look at the Obama link. I’ve got to go for a walk with the kids, but I give an honest assessment if I think it goes far enough.
I don’t know, is Wright still on the Obama campaign staff?
March 14th, 2008 at 6:03 pmI read the link. I think it’s enough. I think Obama did a good job explaining the circumstances. I hope for Obama, he can get the word out. I’m sure he will.
Thanks for the link katy.
