AP reports:
Al-Qaida is in Iraq to stay. It’s not a conclusion the White House talks about much when denouncing the shadowy group, known as al-Qaida in Iraq, that used the U.S. invasion five years ago to develop into a major killer.
The militants are weakened, battered, perhaps even desperate, by most U.S. accounts. But far from being “routed,” as Defense Secretary Robert Gates claimed last month, they’re still there, still deadly active and likely to remain far into the future, military and other officials told The Associated Press. [...]
Al-Qaida in Iraq, which did not exist as a coherent group before U.S. troops invaded in March 2003, probably now numbers no more than 6,000, according to U.S. intelligence estimates.
President Obama will nominate TRoS to become Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Snark.

March 15th, 2008 at 3:37 pmWho needs Monster.com when looking for a job? Recruiting AQI may be Bush's only lasting "business" success.
March 15th, 2008 at 3:38 pmAQI . . . ah, yes, isn't it nice to know that GDumbya's legacy will live on long after he leaves office

Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.
March 15th, 2008 at 3:51 pmAs soon as we leave and stop occupying Iraq, the people in Iraq will kick out what few so-called AQI are still in their country. They don't like them any more than they like us. They want their country back and I say it's time we give it to them.
March 15th, 2008 at 3:51 pmBilbo Hussein Baggins,
March 15th, 2008 at 4:13 pmYou have hit the nail on the head! The Iraqis are dealing with China on developing their oil fields. Why?, because China is willing to walk a lower profit margin.

And I also wouldn't be surprised if 9/10th of the world would just as soon see us outta business at this point too.
Better wake up, America. Yer well, well on yer way ta bein' a has-been country.
Kinda like George Foreman (whom I actually think is a funny guy...) - prolly still dangerous for short lengths of time in a small room, but defintively over weight, over the hill, and no longer a contender.
March 15th, 2008 at 4:25 pmWhy would we ever imagine that Bush would tell us the truth about something which confirms the fact that this mission is a failure and he's a failure as a leader?
March 15th, 2008 at 4:32 pmBush has applied his stimulus -- employment in Al Qaeda is up.
March 15th, 2008 at 4:32 pmThanks for the "copy" and re-post tip, Bilbo.
March 15th, 2008 at 4:33 pmI think another soldier died in Iraq - the total is 3988.
March 15th, 2008 at 4:44 pm.
Are we safer, YET?
Thanks George for making America a safer place to be... And to think, those ungrateful terrists can't even thank us for providing them the job opportunities they now have. Where were those jobs under that dictator, big bad Saddam? And besides, the Iraqis should be happy we're removing our tar oil from their sand.

March 15th, 2008 at 5:52 pmIt is OT but, now that Fallon is out, watch out for more lies that put us into war with Iran about September. If that happens, many people will say that we "need" a military man (mccain) as CinC. That will give us war as far into the future as we can see because st. mccain's spiritual advisor says that we must wipe Islam from the earth.
March 15th, 2008 at 6:08 pmMy status as a chickensnark is over. On Monday I'm heading to the recruiter's office to enlist in the U.S. Snark Reserve.

March 15th, 2008 at 8:06 pmYou did this, George. Rather than bringing democracy to Iraq, you've given them the legacy of blood and death and destruction.

March 15th, 2008 at 10:54 pmDubya doesn't care a wit (and has little of it anyway) about democracy. It's OIL and MONEY for the wealthy he cares about.
Did you know the original name given to the invasion of Iraq was Operation Iraq Liberation (OIL)?
March 15th, 2008 at 11:10 pmNot only are they 'there', they're the Sunni insurgents we've been funding. Oooops.
March 15th, 2008 at 11:13 pmSince Bush and Cheney haven't been arrested yet can the U.S. Marshals be accused of dereliction of duty? I guess though that the attorney general would have to investigate and bring charges and... oh yeah... sorry, what was I thinking.

March 15th, 2008 at 11:31 pmGSD, doesn't it make you feel good seeing your tax dollars going to bribe Al Sadr to stay on vacation and the Sunnis to sit back and build up their arsenals?
March 15th, 2008 at 11:45 pmYeah, all the while Bush sits back and pretends it's all just a romantic movie.
March 15th, 2008 at 11:54 pmI wouldn't take this report on face value. The group "al Qeada in Iraq" (unrelated to Osama bin Laden's al Qeada) has never been a significant faction of the Iraq insurgency. Citing "al Qeada in Iraq" and calling it simply "al Qeada" and getting the Corporate Media to follow along has been a major propaganda coup for the Bush regime. Now every Iraq insurgent is claimed to be al Qeada thus bolstering in the gullible public mind that the US is fighting the same group that was responsible for 9/11 in Iraq. This is a fallacy. Not only are the two groups unrelated, but "al Qeada in Iraq" has always been an insignificant part of the Iraqi insurrection against US occupation forces.

In all serioiusness, of course the problem is in seperating those that are really part of Al Q versus those who individually hate the US of A.

??? - aq in iraq is strong? - 6000 militants vs an army of 130,000??? - wouldn't you think that when you outnumber these people by over 20:1,you might have a decent chance of wiping them out? - so where do you get "we are winning in iraq"?
March 16th, 2008 at 1:41 amshaun #49
What I'm saying is Bush (and McCain) needs Al-Qaida in Iraq for propaganda purposes because the war in Iraq is claimed to be a part of the global war on terror. Its a great scare tactic because every time you mention Al-Qaida people thinks Bin Ladin and 9/11.
But at the same time, since the war is very unpopular at home, Bush (and McCain) needs to say we are winning, the surge is working, violence is down and we have AQ on the run.
So they need to carefully balance these two contradictions in their propaganda.
March 16th, 2008 at 6:53 amAnybody notice how the corporate media have gone from almost never linking Al Qaeda to Iraq 6 or 7 years ago to now making Al Qaeda synonymous with the Baathist Sunnis?
March 16th, 2008 at 8:53 amWe are all now operating in the created reality that Al Qaeda and Iraq are one in the same fight.
A masterstroke of modern propaganda.
Wasn't it just a little while ago the administration announced that AlQueda in Iraq had been vanquished.
Hahahahahahaha.
