AQI stronger than Bush administration admitting.

AP reports:

Al-Qaida is in Iraq to stay. It’s not a conclusion the White House talks about much when denouncing the shadowy group, known as al-Qaida in Iraq, that used the U.S. invasion five years ago to develop into a major killer.

The militants are weakened, battered, perhaps even desperate, by most U.S. accounts. But far from being “routed,” as Defense Secretary Robert Gates claimed last month, they’re still there, still deadly active and likely to remain far into the future, military and other officials told The Associated Press. [...]

Al-Qaida in Iraq, which did not exist as a coherent group before U.S. troops invaded in March 2003, probably now numbers no more than 6,000, according to U.S. intelligence estimates.

Who needs Monster.com when looking for a job? Recruiting AQI may be Bush's only lasting "business" success.

  6. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

As soon as we leave and stop occupying Iraq, the people in Iraq will kick out what few so-called AQI are still in their country. They don't like them any more than they like us. They want their country back and I say it's time we give it to them.

  7. WaltTheMan Says:

    Bilbo Hussein Baggins,
You have hit the nail on the head! The Iraqis are dealing with China on developing their oil fields. Why?, because China is willing to walk a lower profit margin.

    Sez WaltTheMan...

And I also wouldn't be surprised if 9/10th of the world would just as soon see us outta business at this point too.

Better wake up, America. Yer well, well on yer way ta bein' a has-been country.

Kinda like George Foreman (whom I actually think is a funny guy...) - prolly still dangerous for short lengths of time in a small room, but defintively over weight, over the hill, and no longer a contender.

  10. OsirisHusseinOsiris Says:

Why would we ever imagine that Bush would tell us the truth about something which confirms the fact that this mission is a failure and he's a failure as a leader?

  11. Marie Says:

Bush has applied his stimulus -- employment in Al Qaeda is up.

    Are we safer, YET?

Thanks George for making America a safer place to be... And to think, those ungrateful terrists can't even thank us for providing them the job opportunities they now have. Where were those jobs under that dictator, big bad Saddam? And besides, the Iraqis should be happy we're removing our tar oil from their sand.

  20. BearCountry Says:

It is OT but, now that Fallon is out, watch out for more lies that put us into war with Iran about September. If that happens, many people will say that we "need" a military man (mccain) as CinC. That will give us war as far into the future as we can see because st. mccain's spiritual advisor says that we must wipe Islam from the earth.

You did this, George. Rather than bringing democracy to Iraq, you've given them the legacy of blood and death and destruction.

Since Bush and Cheney haven't been arrested yet can the U.S. Marshals be accused of dereliction of duty? I guess though that the attorney general would have to investigate and bring charges and... oh yeah... sorry, what was I thinking.

GSD, doesn't it make you feel good seeing your tax dollars going to bribe Al Sadr to stay on vacation and the Sunnis to sit back and build up their arsenals?

  40. Mr. Evil Says:

Yeah, all the while Bush sits back and pretends it's all just a romantic movie.

  41. Snowball Says:

I wouldn't take this report on face value. The group "al Qeada in Iraq" (unrelated to Osama bin Laden's al Qeada) has never been a significant faction of the Iraq insurgency. Citing "al Qeada in Iraq" and calling it simply "al Qeada" and getting the Corporate Media to follow along has been a major propaganda coup for the Bush regime. Now every Iraq insurgent is claimed to be al Qeada thus bolstering in the gullible public mind that the US is fighting the same group that was responsible for 9/11 in Iraq. This is a fallacy. Not only are the two groups unrelated, but "al Qeada in Iraq" has always been an insignificant part of the Iraqi insurrection against US occupation forces.

TP - am I to take it somehow that you're insinuating that the prez would cook the books ?

In all serioiusness, of course the problem is in seperating those that are really part of Al Q versus those who individually hate the US of A.

Interesting how they need to have it both ways:

We are winning in Iraq and Al-Qaida is on the run BUT Al-Qaida in Iraq is strong so we need to stay…

??? - aq in iraq is strong? - 6000 militants vs an army of 130,000??? - wouldn't you think that when you outnumber these people by over 20:1,you might have a decent chance of wiping them out? - so where do you get "we are winning in iraq"?

  46. galmud Says:

    shaun #49

What I'm saying is Bush (and McCain) needs Al-Qaida in Iraq for propaganda purposes because the war in Iraq is claimed to be a part of the global war on terror. Its a great scare tactic because every time you mention Al-Qaida people thinks Bin Ladin and 9/11.

But at the same time, since the war is very unpopular at home, Bush (and McCain) needs to say we are winning, the surge is working, violence is down and we have AQ on the run.

So they need to carefully balance these two contradictions in their propaganda.

  47. kassandrasduplex Says:

Anybody notice how the corporate media have gone from almost never linking Al Qaeda to Iraq 6 or 7 years ago to now making Al Qaeda synonymous with the Baathist Sunnis?
We are all now operating in the created reality that Al Qaeda and Iraq are one in the same fight.
    A masterstroke of modern propaganda.

  48. shaker o salt Says:

Wasn't it just a little while ago the administration announced that AlQueda in Iraq had been vanquished.

    Hahahahahahaha.
