Today, Vice President Cheney spoke to U.S. troops at the Balad Air Force Base in Iraq. During the speech, he defended the war in Iraq as part of the “long-term struggle” that “became urgent on the morning of September 11th, 2001.” He also argued that the longer the war goes on, the more Iraqis “trust” and feel “better” about Americans:
We made a surge in operations, and the results are now clear: more effective raids to root out enemies; better and more accurate intelligence information from the locals; and higher hopes for the future from the Iraqi people. And across this country, the more that Iraqis have gotten to know Americans — the nature of our intentions, and the character of our soldiers — the better they’ve felt about the United States of America.
They know, above all, that America can be trusted. They know we’re a nation that accepts a hard job, and keeps at it even if others may tire of the effort. And we’ll continue working to help this young democracy, to be an example to others, and to be an ally in the war on terror.
In reality, the longer the United States stays in Iraq, the more frustrated Iraqis become. According to a BBC/ABC/ARD/NHK poll released yesterday, the number of Iraqis who don’t have “very much confidence” in U.S. occupation forces is at 33 percent — the highest point since 2003. Forty-six percent of Iraqis have no confidence at all, compared to just four percent with a “great deal of confidence.”
Forty-six percent of Iraqis also believe that the overall security situation in Iraq would be better if U.S. forces left entirely, compared to 29 percent who believe the situation would get worse. Additionally, 53 percent say that Bush’s “surge” has “made overall security worse, not better.”
Iraqis aren’t the only ones souring on the United States. According to a 2007 BBC poll, global opinion of America continues to plummet each day troops remain in Iraq:

Nothing like admitting to everyone that you and Chimpy are n't Americans , Dickhead ..............
March 18th, 2008 at 3:28 pmI posted this in the Bremer thread, but it seems to apply here as well. So if you all will indulge my repetition:
I have this dream every so often that a powerful foreign government sees Bush as a despotic leader who must be removed. They invade America, perform a bunch of shock-and-awe bombing and kick out Bush, Cheney, and everyone else who’s part of that administration. Naturally, the Bush loyalists put up a fight, but they can’t really do much because our National Guard is gone and our military is broken.
Afterwards, these foreign invaders hang around for “nation building” — the conventional wisdom being that if we are left to do it ourselves, we can’t be trusted to do it right and we will wind up with another tyrant for a leader. Furthermore, because we no longer have a government, our polarized society is in danger of breaking out into full-scale civil war.
How would we feel under such an occupation? Oh, there might be some of us who would be so glad to get rid of Bushco that we would greet the invaders as liberators and shower them with flowers and chocolate. At first. But how would we feel if they just hung around and never left? How would we feel about their building permanent military bases in our country? How would we feel about their championing puppet leaders for us? Would we "feel better" about the occupiers the longer they stayed?

March 18th, 2008 at 4:01 pmSemites are peoples who speak Semitic languages; the group includes Arabs, Aramaeans, Jews, and many Ethiopians. In a Biblical sense, Semites are peoples whose ancestry can be traced back to Shem, Noah's eldest son. The ancient Semitic populations were pastoral Nomads who several centuries before the Christian Era were migrating in large numbers from Arabia to Mesopotamia, the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, and the Nile River delta. Jews and other Semites settled in villages in Judea, southern Palestine.

It took awhile, and tracing the source back a couple of spots, but I finally understand this "by nationality" table.
The figure of "244.44 per cent" for Saudi Arabia threw me, but in the original Brookings report, that figure is actually "244, 44%" -- in other words, there were 244 Saudis crossing into Iraq to support the insurgency, making up 44% of the total.
Anybody who wants to see the original source (complete with pie chart) can go here and scroll to page 24 of the PDF:
http://www.brookings.edu/saban/~/media/Files/Centers/Saban/Iraq%20Index/index20080228.pdf
Does anyone care that more Saudis are supporting the insurgency we are fighting than any other nationality? Does anyone care that more of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis than any other nationality? Does anybody care that we are picking fights with everybody EXCEPT Saudi Arabia, while they are not being held accountable for their home-grown terrorists?

SA is the birthplace of Wahhabism, it is logical that its roots would have gone the deepest there. Bin Laden is a Saudi, obvioulsy.
I am not certain we CAN pick any fights with SA; we totally depend on their oil, they hold huge amounts of our debt but most importantly they have Mecca and Medina - any overt action we took against them would cause a massive explosion of hate against the US.
The only thing that gives me hope is that the Royal Family is as big of an AQ target as we are, probably bigger. They know AQ threatens their reign. Unfortunately for us, they are quite happy to have their Wahhabists cross the border into Iraq - when they blow themselves up there, it isn't Saudi civilians who die and that is one less enemy for them to deal with. I guess the real question is, do our commanders in Iraq/political leaders understand this dynamic and are okay with it?
March 18th, 2008 at 4:45 pmThis comment by Deadeye is hilarious. It's fact that Iraq (AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE WORLD) lose respect for us with each passing day of our illegal occupation in Iraq. These thugs in chief have shreded the credibility of this country along with the constitution and the rule of law. Now with the dollar hitting the skids and our economy tanking, no one looks up to us any longer. How could they when the Chimp was reelected?? In a nutshell, we're slipping into obscurity - mimicking the USSR just prior to the decline of their country. They, too, put imperialism over the needs of their own people and it destroyed them as a world power.
By the time Bush exits stage right, this country will be a third world country. Imagine: One wrong man stealing the presidency twice did this to us; one demented executive who usurped the power to hold himself above the law has made us a country of white collar barbarians. One man - that man, none other than George W. Bush (or was that Emperor Bush?).

No, it’s the truth. It’s a non-issue. Nobody but right-wing racists should have anything more to criticize.
Toasterhead, I hope you are right. This whole thing has been eating at me - but I am not ready to declare it over yet, he was bleeding support in polls, they couldn't have all been right wing racists.
No time to chat more, I am outta here, but I suspect we'll be talking about this for a while.

Don't waste your time on idiots like themanisscared. Bash it if you feel like it, but a serious response to one of its assine postings is a waste of your energy. It has neither the willingess nor the capability to respond in a thoughtful manner.
And, it's a coward. You'll notice that it isn't fighting for what it claims to believe in. No, it's hiding back here safe and sound talking tough and shaking in fear of a black man.

He said he’s never heard Mr Wright make statement’s like in the Trinity Church DVD a couple of days ago. Today, he said he heard the racists and derogatory statements from Mr Wright but disagreed with them and still went to the church anyway! His campaign is dun!!!
That’s right. Statistically, he’s won the nomination. The only way he can lose is if the superdelegates screw him over.
And as for the Wright thing, it’s now a non-issue. Barack Hussein Obama put that one to bed with an eloquent speech today that addressed race and the frustrations of the white and black communities in this country.
Sorry, troll - you lose again!
Not true, statistically he as tied the nomination, and the only way he can win is if the superdelegates screw over Hillary, as at this point neither of them have the votes necessary to win.
Eloquent speech? Where he blames the media and the ignorance and racism of white folks for all of his minister's lunatic religious comments? Sorry, but Obama's choice of an all black racist church as the spiritual guide for himself and his young children shows ineptly bad judgment! I'm so glad I voted for Hillary in the primaries, Obama is just not ready for the nomination! Heck, he couldn't even own up to how belonging to a completely racist, anti-semitic church was a mistake! What an idiot! And you're one for not recognizing what a fool you were for following the Hopium Cult !

I have no need to defend nor condemn Mr. Obama. Either way this is just plain weak. It would be too boring to list the many contridictory statements of any political figure regardless of their party. Seems you have selective outrage
We're talking about his church, his major choices, his personal attitudes (as is clearly reflected by his choice of churches) and the fact that he's blatantly lied (that's what you'd call it if GWB had done the same) on the issues. He's not the hope and change that all of the Hopium addicts had dreamed of. In fact, he's just as soiled, and far more bigoted than the supposedly bad Hillary is.
All I can say is that I'm glad I wasn't duped by him, and it's sad to me that you still are!
March 18th, 2008 at 6:29 pmFor a long time I've felt Cheney needs to be impeached.......now I think he should be in a mental hospital.....he is a danger to others.
March 18th, 2008 at 6:37 pmWho let the republican in denial back in? Not only does he hate facts, he thinks attending a church and getting married by a pastor who may have said some awfully Righteous rants regarding how America the "Christian Nation" Is, well, rather unChristian.
Republicans wallow in guilt by association, al-la ad homonym attacks. By their frame of narrow wisdumb ANY Catholic that has attended mass or married by a Priest that has also been indicted as a pedophile, supports pedophilia.

You make presumptions which are unsubstantiated by any words I have ever expressed. Most peoples Church has little to do with some deeper meaning other than sect, location, and family tradition. As to Ms. Clinton, I also have no reason to condemn nor defend her either.
March 18th, 2008 at 7:12 pmAnd the longer YOU stay in Iraq, the better I feel.
March 18th, 2008 at 7:18 pmIn fact, why don't you just move over into the green zone where a nice embassy is being built -- there's room for Lynn and your daughters, and grandchildren.
Not that we really need it but because the airhead troll brought it up, I'll post it. Barak Obama did not say that he had heard Wright say the things that were all over the airwaves. What he said was:
He said he had heard his pastor say some controversial things he disagreed with, not that he had heard the remarks that were on TV. When I went to church I heard the reverend say some controversial things that I didn't agree with. But I did not judge the reverend on those words, I judged her on who she was and what she brought to the church. Most of what she brought was a message of love and hope.

Your Hillary devotion is obviously blinding you and affecting your hearing. I guess you are agreeing with our resident troll and saying that Obama lied because he said in his speech that he had heard Wright say some controversial things. He did not say he heard him say the things he said on the video that was circulating. He also went on to condemn the things Wright said on the video tape as divisive and unhelpful to the racial situation in this country.
What are you going to do a$$ when Obama is the candidate? Are you going to vote for McCain?

You obviously flunked math in school. They are no where near tied. Obama has over 100 more delegates than Clinton has. In order to catch him she will need to take 60% plus in every election from now until the convention. It's not going to happen. You are correct that at this point neither have the delegates to win. But Hillary won't be able to come out in the end with more delegates and I doubt she will even win in the popular vote. So, the only way she can win is if the super delegates go against the wishes of the people in this country and appoint her. That will tear the Democratic party in two and probably give the election to the Republicans. Is that what you want to see happen?
BTW, when Obama is the candidate, what are you going to do? Are you going to vote for McCain?

It is amazing to see their cunning technique... Must be one of Rove's step by step books. Everytime they speak they say the opposite to the truth. Everytime! "Saddam has stockpile of WMD", "The US does not torture", "We are not in a Recession", "If someone from my adminisitration is found guilty of treason, they will ...", "It is not a Surge, it is an audmantaion", "Katrina?!...We've done a great job!", "No no, we have nothing to do with 9/11", "Mission acomplished!"... Everytime they say something in public they do this! Chenney should be handcuffed, hooded, and taken to Hague imediatly! I hope the USA one day will be serious in restoring its credibility and make these criminals face accountability under the International Law! That is, if they ever get serious about it!

March 19th, 2008 at 1:26 pmCheney: The Longer We’re In Iraq, The ‘Better’ Iraqis Feel About America
March 21st, 2008 at 3:09 pmThe better Iraqis FEEL???? This is code for: the longer we stay in Iraq, the longer we can force our ways on the coming generation.. AND the longer we can grow our investments.
F you cheney... Obama will clean up and put an end to your evil ways.
But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country - a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.
As such, Reverend Wright’s comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems - two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic dell inspiron 4100 battery, dell inspiron 700m battery health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.
