Back then, there were even fewer probing questions asked about starting the war than there are now, about the occupation. In fact, they continue to call it a "war". There are no journalists left, only stenographers.

Southern Man Says:
March 20th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Editor and Publisher points out today that five years ago, at least 1/3 of national newspapers opposed invading Iraq:

Which means 2/3’s didn’t. Not only does the new design not work right, the writers are not either. The story is set up improperly. I’m begining to see why they are losing a lot of their posters.

Pehaps if we're lucky this site will lose you, as well.

Two thirds of the print media were advocating this war. I suspect a greater percentage of radio/tv media were not only peddling this war, they actually seemed more than eager to promote it with their programming.
The one-third of print media who had cooler heads at the time, were out-shouted by the two-thirds, by the electronic media, and more importantly by Bush, Cheney, Rice, Powell, Perle, Feith, et al.,who won the influence battle.
The American citizens who opposed the war, who marched, who wrote letters, made phone calls were cast as unpatriotic wimps, as were those in higher positions who were brave enough to say the truth.

I spend a lot of time reading upwards of 10 Newspapers about every day about what the 2008 election is about, and find almost all of them have the same story, although played slightly different. There is almost a 100% support for Obama, and against Hillary on the Dem side. The Repub support for McCain is at best Tepid [slight]. Electronic Media [TV and Radio] is the big offender of the TRUTH about Obama. The cable TV News/Talk show hosts and their panelists are a disgrace to the profession called journalism. The Fourth Estate is sadly laking.

Despite the opposition of some, the dog was wagged and the the corrupt and inept were carried to reelection. It is amazing how few vote enightened self-interest and how many vote personality and hot-button-emotion. The fourth estate must do a better job or our republic is doomed!

Shouldn’t the headline be “Only 1/3? opposed the invasion? 2/3 supported this mess? What were they thinking?

When is it that you started worrying about thinking?

I remember the first time I read that part of the PNAC's website right after 9-11 and way back then it became clear to me what was going on. When I noticed the signatories to that insane plan for the world the pieces of the puzzle seemed to fall into place by themselves. But, did the media pick up on this, no. Did the American public pick up on this, no. It's basically been by a few bloggers and word-of-mouth that gradually people have become aware of the REAL reason we went to Iraq. To make it short, those involved with and are within the PNAC should be arrested and tried for treason, war crimes, embezzlement, malfeasance and other high crimes and misdemeanors.

TP's new design is less attractive than before. Plus it's slower loading. I'm a Mac user. TP needed to add a "Block Quote" feature in the formatting options so we can quote other posts without copying and pasting.

Get your money back from whoever you paid to construct this albatross.

If l/3 of the newspapers and about 70% of americans did not believe Bush's lies and wanted the UN investigators to continue and our voices were squelched by this cadre of criminals in high places, it's quite evident that PNAC and Bush had hatched this war even before he got into the white house.

Follow the chronology - read "The New Pearl Harbor" by David Ray Griffin. Go to www.davidraygriffin.com for all of the facts. This was an inside job and a "done deal" long before 911.

overlap: It was "worth it" to them - follow the money trail - both Bush and McSame's financial interests in the military war complex and you'll soon see why the "surge is working" and everything's just "peachy" to them.
IF I remember correctly, and without some investigation, as I suppose some would insist upon (its 0130 where I live) I believe that newspapers making these statements were way too late, not to say too wimpy.

In fact, Bush had already moved most of the major military units into the war zone or were on target to arrive in March-April. He would not have stopped the war, it was too late, with the very hot summer season about to begin. Military commanders did not want to fight in the heat of an Iraqi summer, over 100 degrees faranheit for days on end. For the MSM, too little too late, by mid Jan the forces had been committed.

I also believe that the constant chant for Bush and Co, that many countries believed that there were MSDs in Iraq had as their primary source the US intel machine. They did not develop that intel themselves, they relied on a US intel complex that had generally been truthful, if not always correct. Not so much with Bush.

Now it's time to bring into the focus those other newspapers who played the game of propaganda mouthpiece and spread the lies and disinformation as though it was fact. Let's hold them accountable via some class action suits for lying to the american people. It's time to bring down the big boys - the ones in reichwing lockstep spewing the propaganda. Time to boycott these "anti-democracy media" and show them that we no longer need them.

I don't even know what it would be called besides "self-referral" when Cheney sends the NYT some propaganda; they publish it; then he and Bush quote it back in our faces as though it's some "outside source". What a major pimpjob they've done on the american people.

More evidence that this corrupt administration listened to absolutely no one and had intentions to invade Iraq even before 911. (google: PNAC's The New Pearl Harbor).

I guess because I don't read print news anymore, I do not remember anyone speaking out against it.

DieNow, drop TP a note on the Contact Us. I use a Treo with Blazer and it still works. I get a "Your browser does not support the XMLHttpRequest Object error" message, but once I OK it, it works fine. My iPod Touch (same as the iPhone) also gets TP just fine. I haven't tested he Blackberry yet but last time I did, it, too, was just fine. I dropped them a note before about things not working and the whole why, how, what it does, bit (think technical support call) and they responded. They are quite conscientious about making it work.
