Lieberman forced to correct McCain…again.

Lieberman forced to correct McCain…again.»

For the second time during their taxpayer-funded overseas trip, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) was forced to correct Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) after he made an incorrect statement. Speaking in Israel yesterday, McCain referred to the Jewish holiday Purim as “their version of Halloween.” After McCain spoke, Lieberman stepped in and gingerly took blame for McCain’s mistake, saying that he had given McCain the false impression of the holiday’s meaning. NBC’s Mark Murray writes:

McCain’s mistake wasn’t a big deal. But what is interesting…is Lieberman’s role during this trip. In two days, Lieberman has intervened twice in front of the press — once helping McCain with a correction on Sunnis/Shiites and once putting the blame on himself regarding the description of Purim.

Purim actually “commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination.” (HT: HuffPo)

  40. just john Says:

    PURIM
    Background
Purim is a holiday of revelry and Carnival-spirit in early spring that celebrates Jewish deliverance from the threat of anti-Semitism and annihilation. The festival, based on “events” described in the Biblical Book of Esther, reads like an ancient soap opera. Esther, a Jewish girl raised by her uncle Mordecai in Shushan in Persia, marries King Ahasuerus when the former Queen Vashti refuses to obey him. But Esther does not reveal at first that she is Jewish. …

    How we celebrate Purim
The centerpiece of the Purim celebration is the Megillah reading, or recitation of the Purim story, that is interrupted with the sound of noisemakers, or groggers, whenever evil Haman’s name is spoken. It is customary to blot out Haman’s name, and in some circles, even to drink enough wine during the proceedings so as not to tell the difference between Haman and Mordecai! These customs most likely long predate Purim and the Book of Esther and hearken from older festivals that mark the change of seasons and a desire to expel evil spirits which might be near.

    ———————-

I have no doubt that some might call Purim by these names because of the masquerade common denominator. I’m somewhat skeptical that Jews would compare their holiday to Mardi Gras (a Christian observance) or Halloween (a Christian observance incorporating pagan customs). Since McCain was speaking in Israel, this would be about as politically correct as a politician from a Muslim country coming to the United States and comparing Christmas to Eid al-Fitr.

You’ve left out the most important part: reading the Purim Meghillah (scroll/story) which tells the story of Queen Esther saving Persia’s Jews. People don’t just go to the synagogue with noisemakers; the noisemakers are sued to drown out the name of genocidal “Haman.” And it doesn’t matter what it’s nicknamed and by whom. The point is that it is not either one of those, especially not Halloween.

McCain either did not prepare well for his remarks. He shows a remarkable lack of sensitivity about those whose religions he speaks about.

    ————————————–

It isn’t just that the lack of sensitivity is alarming, it’s also that McCain obviously never does his homework. I would say “how can somebody like this ever hope to be elected?” but then I remember who’s in the White House now.

One thing that can honestly be said of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton by friends and foes alike is that they both are major preparation nerds. They wouldn’t dream of going out and pontificating on something they hadn’t researched thoroughly, and they would never go visit a foreign country without learning as much about their culture as they could.

Whereas McCain thinks it’s OK to just “wing it”. It doesn’t matter if he offends anyone, because when you’re the POTUS, everyone else is unimportant — right? Haven’t we already had too many years of a president who not only looks like a fool but doesn’t care?

You’re right, missmolly — before Bush, a president as undisciplined as this one is would have been unthinkable. Bush has demonstrated why it doesn’t work, but that lesson apparently lost on McCain.

  79. mauro7inf Says:

Hey, people, look. Carnaval — Mardi Gras, whatever — is the Catholic version of Purim. Purim is the one day where you’re actually allowed to get piss drunk; it’s a wild and raucous party with wine, noisemakers, and funny hats, and it’s traditionally when gifts are exchanged (not Chanukah; that’s an American “I’m-pissed-we-don’t-celebrate-Christmas” tradition). Comparing it to Halloween isn’t particularly accurate; as I pointed out, I think the best comparison is with Carnaval. It even happens around the same time. My shul used to put on a fair with game booths and food and such as an annual Purim event (maybe it still does, I don’t know). So all you guys who are acting so serious about extermination, there are other holidays for that — Yom Hashoah rememebers the Holocaust, and there are three fast days (not counting the Fast of Esther, the day before Purim) remembering the destruction of the two Temples and other large losses. Tisha b’Av, for instance; look it up. You could still say that Purim is somewhat bittersweet given the fasting the day before, but Purim is THE party holiday. Joe Lieberman the Orthodox Jew should know this and the halacha requiring you to get drunk enough to confuse the names of Haman and Mordechai (but no drunker), the traditions of making noise when Haman’s name comes up in the Megillat Esther, and the only song anyone knows, “Chag Purim, chag Purim, chag gadol hayeladim,” roughly meaning “Purim holiday, Purim holiday, big holiday for the kids.” So McCain wasn’t far off, except that Purim actually has religious meaning compared with Halloween, which doesn’t have much. Purim is the celebration of a great victory over evil and not the mourning of a great loss like Tisha b’Av. So do some homework before you criticize.

Thanks to Bush, the bar has been lowered to the ground as far as standards pertaining to presidential suitability go.

Yeah, Mary, and now that senile old asshat is just going to trip over it.

I honestly don’t think anyone is paying attention to McCains trip, for which he should be hugely grateful.

The Obama Speech/Preachergate is just way better television.

Also, I hate to say this, but most Americans of all political stripe don’t know Shia from Sunni or Purim from Purina. If you yourself don’t know something and find out a politician doesn’t either, either you can’t appreciate whether it is important or not or, worse yet, you go “Hey, I don’t know that, but neither does the guy running for President, so I am not that dumb after all!”

You said Halloween doesn’t have much religious meaning. There, you’re wrong.

Halloween is in refernce to All Hallow’s Eve, the night prior to All Saints Day. All Saints Day is a Catholic holiday that celebrates, well, you guessed it: all of the saints. All Hallow’s Eve is the night before when all of the devils and demons get to play prior to all of the saints being honored the next day.

So… there is a religous background to the day.

  89. bobcat_grad Says:

    Keltoi… wow.

Unique logic you use. “If I’m dumb and don’t know something, it’s comforting to know that the GOP guy running president doesn’t either. I sure wouldn’t want someone who was smart in office. I’d feel most dumber, then.”

PS: It’s their DAMN JOB to know the difference between Sunni and Shia when you commit trillions of dollars and countless lives to an area filled with two sects of people that have HATED EACH OTHER FOR A THOUSAND YEARS.

  90. Bartolo Says:

    “Their version of Halloween”, eh?

Didn’t know the Pope invented Halloween, did you?

I didn’t say it was good, Bobcat, I was trying to understand why his gaffes in the ME weren’t costing him at the polls. Either no one is paying attention or they don’t understand the difference themselves.

Personally, I am simply boggled by the idea that he doesn’t know the difference. It is such a simple, basic difference. I don’t expect Progressives to like McCain, but when he says he mis-spoke that seems more likely than that he really doesn’t know the difference. The guy has been in Congress for almost 3 decades…

I think the most likely explanation is that the polls haven’t caught up with this incident yet. They tend to lag about a week or two, don’t they? And any poll that purported to have measured the effect of something like this in a single day, I wouldn’t trust right away.

Then again, maybe everyone is fixated on “PreacherGate”, so focused on attacking a candidate for something someone else said that they ignore another candidate’s actual embarrassing statement.

I think it is the latter. Like I said, Preachergate is awesome copy - it has something for everyone, whether it is Hannity playing the Wright tape 24/7 or the MSM swooning over how wonderful Obama’s speech was. Also, the fact that Iraq itself has dropped from the news helps McCain - people fighting and dying over there barely gets a mention any more. Someone misidenifying a sect is just not that exciting.

The Blogging the Bible series by David Plotz on slate.com had a nice write-up about Pimm…. The last paragraph from his blog entry on Pimm, Purim and the story of Esther reminds me of the differences in the Iraq narrative we hear from Joe McBush Chenyierman and co and reality….

“I’m from a family of lax Jews, and I’m sure our Purim celebrations weren’t quite up to code. Even so, I am shocked at the difference between the Purim story I heard in synagogue and the Purim story in the Bible. We certainly celebrated the death of Haman at synagogue, but I don’t recall hearing about the orgy of violence that followed. The 75,000 killed, Esther’s insistence on a second day of slaughter, the vindictive impaling of Haman’s sons—all that was left out of the kid-friendly Purim story I was raised on. Those horrifying acts make Purim a much more ambiguous, and troubling, holiday.”

  99. whatever Says:

Also, is it just me or is anybody else beginning to feel like Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham are almost becoming minders for a older war hero who seems to be not as sharp as he used to be (to put it mildly) ….

embarrassing is putting it mildly - and how pathetic of the media to be overlooking mccain’s statements especially since he is supposedly the candidate with the most ‘experience’ when it comes to foreign policy - i haven’t seen anything on the news - the only people heard sounding out about mccain’s bush-level cluelessness about ‘ferners’ are jack cafferty and keith olbermann(nothing on the fixed noise website but that’s no great shock) - would have loved to have seen obama attack mccain while he had the tv time instead of having to give a speech on religion and race that he really shouldn’t have had to do.

  103. mauro7inf Says:

But there it’s All Saints’ Day that has most of the religious significance — I didn’t say All Hallows’ Eve had none, just not much. Kind of like Mardi Gras, which is not so much an important holiday as it is the day before Lent starts. But you’re right, I should have been more careful in talking about it. Interestingly enough, it was a long time before I even knew that Halloween was a Catholic holiday; when I first moved to the US, I thought it was just an American one (if it’s celebrated in Brazil, it just wasn’t celebrated to me!).
