I think about 9/11, the Underground bombing, Madrid and terrorist attacks and, at times, I feel depressed for my nephews and the future generation because people like you and your party want to run away from this problem. Why do support the destruction of our future generation by terrorists?

Terrorism will always be around. It has existed since the beginning of human civilization and it will exist until the end of human civilization. There will always be people using violence to achieve political goals. There will always be people shouting “Death to America” somewhere in the world. There will always be religious nutbags – Christian, Jewish, Hundu, and Muslim – who think violence will bring about some sort of end-state peace.

Military solutions will never stop that.

The only way to address these problems is diplomacy – and not the hegemonic “transformational diplomacy” we’re currently pursuing, but actual dialogue and reconciliation, combined with a ruthless assault on poverty, inequality, and human rights violations.

And as part of that diplomacy, the United States needs to take a good, hard look at itself and its imperialist history since 1953. We have a shitload to atone for.
