State Department employees breach Obama’s passport.

By Faiz on Mar 20th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

State Department employees breach Obama’s passport.»

“Two State Department employees were fired recently and a third disciplined for improperly accessing electronic personal data on Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.” Obama’s passport files were breached three times in the past three months. During a conference call tonight, a State Department official admitted they “failed.” The official also said that the State Department Inspector General was not informed of the breach until today.

UpdateA statement from the Obama campaign:
This is an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an Administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years. Our government's duty is to protect the private information of the American people, not use it for political purposes. This is a serious matter that merits a complete investigation, and we demand to know who looked at Senator Obama's passport file, for what purpose, and why it took so long for them to reveal this security breach.
UpdateThe State Department asserts there was "no political motivation" for the breach. Spokesman Sean McCormack said the department itself detected the instances of "imprudent curiosity."

This little bit of Bush gangsterism ought to seal up the Democratic nomination and the Presidential Election for Senator Obama…

Heck of a job, Bush crime family, maybe you-all ought to try tying your shoelaces, before you stumble around in the dark, spying on us Americans…

Imprudent curiosity? Give me a break! Why weren’t other candidates’ files breached? This is really outrageous. I have had to work with “secure” data in the past, and any breach was considered serious. Investigations are immediate any all concerned parties are notified. Something as simple as checking arrest records of someone you know could put an upcoming court case in jeopardy. Obama has had everything but the kitchen sink thrown at him.

Just a thought. Everyone seems to be on the Reverend Wright bashing bandwagon these days with hardly a word about the words of Pastor John Hagee, Rev. Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Mike Huckabee. Oh, I forgot, those guys are white and republicans. They can say whatever they want about America and Americans.

Who got them their jobs with that contractor? And how do they know that all 3 occasions were just people looking out of curisity? I’m sure they knew NOT to access any information without proper approval lest it be a serious offense and at least reason for termination. This is very smelly to me. You know, sort of like, knowing the identities and near complete backgrounds of the 19 9-11 hijackers right after the event. No political motivation my ass!

Who says it was the RNC? Maybe it was the Clinton campaign.

With all due respect, between the two, I think the RNC (with its established connections to the Bush Administration) is the more likely of the two. If it was either. I can’t imagine how a Clinton campaign worker/supporter/wannabe/whatever could get a job that would give him or her that kind of access.

  31. barfly Says:

I’m probably get some heated disagreement for this, but while this breach was serious, I don’t think it was for overtly political purposes - it was probably a few “independent operators” looking to cash in. They either were offering themselves up as political cut-outs, for deniable plausibility that the breach was intended for oppo research, or they were hoping to funnel some salacious tidbits to the tabloids for big bucks.

This could pass for semantics gg. They still have to abide by the rules. Who is the contractor? Who hired the contractor? Who approved the contractor? Will the contract be voided after not 1, not 2, but 3 breaches! There’s a lot more to this than simple benign curiosity, 3 different times.

Then why only Obama? Why not Bush and his money grab trips to Saudi Arabia? Why not Hillary and/or Bill and where they’re getting money from? Why not McCain and where…. Hell, who cares.

  34. stjack Says:

does it seem odd that they are only reporting that they looked up obama? i mean, if i had that kind of access and was willing to potentially put my job on the line to satisfy my curiosity, i’d probably start with something innocuous, like looking up an old girlfriend or something. is this the first and only time these guys did this? why did they decide to report it now? and what did these guys do with the information they got away with?

  35. Zooey Says:

  39. Tired of being lied to Says:

Since when was “curiosity” an excuse for letting this kind of thing happen and slide by? If that were so, then any breach of privacy and the security of confidential documents could simply be attributed to “So sorry - I was just curious.” Oh, well, then no problem. I don’t think so. This was done with purpose and intent.

This is yet another example for the total disregard the Bush administration has, and always has had, for rules and laws. They continue to just do what they damn well please, and go f%%k yourself. (How many times has Darth Cheney said as much?)

    Update from Will Bunch:

    …from Nov. 1992:

A State Department official who carried out the two-day search of passport files for information about Gov. Bill Clinton said today that he had resigned, just 48 hours before Federal investigators are expected to issue a report criticizing the search.

The official, Steven M. Moheban, was a top aide to Elizabeth M. Tamposi, the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs who was dismissed last week by President Bush for her role in the search of files on Mr. Clinton, his mother, Virginia Kelley, and Ross Perot, the independent Presidential candidate.

These were not “State Department Employees” as falsely reported above. They were employees of a contractor under contract with the State Department, and their activity was detected and caught by the State Department itself which reported the activity to the contractor who promptly fired to of the men involved and disciplined a third. The FBI will do a complete investigation. Although this doesn’t appear to be politically motivated, I wouldn’t be too surprised to learn that Camp Hillary was behind it.

    Pwned!

  47. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    good_golly,

And you believe these people who claim to have seen Obama’s passport, unstamped for Kenya?

Brack Obama has traveled around the world since he was a child. He has probably gone through many, many passports in his life. Perhaps he has not visited Kenya since he got his current one.

But do keep stretching for those Clinton connections. I still think it highly more likely that the Republican Party planted those people in there to do what they did. I am not saying that’s what happened, just that it is more likely than any of your scenarios. Especially when one considers how much this administration politicizes every single level of government, even the ones that are supposed to be apolitical. And you want to think that the RNC had nothing to do with this?

I think Obama is the only one who MIGHT rein in the funneling of US Treasury funds to everything but this country. We are on the precipice of a worldwide depression which was initiated by the corruption in what was the greatest market. Who is going to want to invest in American stocks after years of everything from Enron to Bear Stern?

    No one.

Unfortunately, Obama is too good, too honest, and too moral to become president of this corrupt country and it’s corrupt politicians.

And not just us, but a good part of the world is screwed because of it. We ARE a world leader and we are leading the world to starvation (Monsanto and their GMOs), ignorance of science which will create misery in food, water, storms, god only knows what else.

  53. Marie Says:

    “imprudent curiosity”
And who declared it to be innocent? Why the supervisor of the three who did the breach! Higher ups at State claim they only learned of this today no official investigation - no official declaration — they have the judgment of the office supervisor who fired these people, but never reported the incident up the chain of command (for fear of losing his own job?); this reeks of gross incompetence at best. Unscrupulous and criminal at worst.

  54. Bobwurst Says:

gigi is once again pissing into a fan. Of course it’s clinton who did it. bush has never done anything wrong in his life, just ask him. Given that his father did the same thing to bill back in 92, it’s a safe bet the junior is behind this.

Obama did not recognize immediately that many white, not so rich Americans feel the same as his preacher feels.

Now, Obama gets it. Normal Thinking Americans feel that their Civil Liberties are being violated.

I suspect you seriously misinterpreted what Rachael said. I have heard her many times on Countdown and she always says that the Superdelegates should do what the people want.

  84. Kay Says:

It all started before 9/11. A little known publication called
“Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources For a New Century” written by a coterie of neoCONS.
(Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz etc) — it was all part of a master plan to beef up the Military.

Section V of Rebuilding America’s Defenses, entitled “Creating Tomorrow’s Dominant Force”, includes the sentence: “Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event––like a new Pearl Harbor”.

Well, it does not take a genius to figure out who was behind 9/11. We have developed into an Authoritarian Government. With the Patriot Act, The Military Commissions Act, The John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 keeping this in mind with the wiretapping this great nation is teetering toward full blown Fascist Rule.

It wouldn’t take much. As Cheney slinks around the Middle East you can bet something is going on regarding Iran.

But,I digress. This security breach re: Obama is just a microcosm of what is happening right now in this country. I hope the source of this is fully identified. But, you know these Criminals that are installed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are so slick. They are like teflon. Not a goddamn thing seems to have stuck these past 8 years.

And they continue to get away literally with murder (see: 9/11, men and women in Iraq, Katrina etc).

Obama really needs to stand up here. This great nation is crumbling (economically, spiritually etc) before our very eyes. I don’t have all the answers but turning off “American Idle would be a good start.

The State Department asserts there was “no political motivation” for the breach. Spokesman Sean McCormack said the department itself detected the instances of “imprudent curiosity.”

When you make a declarative statement like this, the burden of proof is upon you. Prove it.

  89. Jim Wolf359 Says:

I might be a little late with this, but I just saw on CNN that Sen. Clinton’s Passport Records have also been breached. What excatly are the Repug Scumbags looking for? Wanna tell us Frakie?

  90. A Patriot Acting Says:

“If he doesn’t have anything to hide in his passport records, why is his campaign so upset about this?”

“Nonsense. You can’t prove such a negative.”
    -Frank Piss-soaked-troll M

This is the same morally challenged troll who was proud of the CIA for destroying the torture tapes. It claimed that without the evidence you can’t prove it’s torture, so that’s ok. It has no problem applying the WH canard “if you’ve got nothing to hide…” but don’t you dare try to enforce ANY oversight of any kind on his Dear Leader and his merry men.

Please flag this ingnorant fool. He’ll be happy to sell our Nation down the toilet for 4 more years of Repub rule, despite our failing economy and hobbled military.

  91. riconaps Says:

One angle I haven’t heard from the pundits yet: I think Condi’s VP stock just took a nose-dive. If her cabinet department is this poorly managed, how could she manage two wars?
