Bush Falsely Claims Iran ‘Declared’ It Wants A Nuclear Weapon ‘To Destroy People’

bushweb.jpgDuring a recent interview with Radio Farda, a U.S. government-run radio service that broadcasts into Iran in the Farsi language, President Bush falsely claimed that Iran “declared they want to have a nuclear weapon to destroy people.”

However, the the U.S. intelligence community disagrees. A National Intelligence Estimate on Iran released last December stated unequivocally that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons program in 2003. But also, Iran has never “declared” its intention to acquire nuclear weapons and in fact, it has publicly stated the opposite:

–”Iran has repeatedly denied seeking nuclear warheads, and its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a religious edict in 2005 forbidding the production, stockpiling and use of such weapons.

–Iran expert and former Bush administration official Suzanne Maloney: “The Iranian government is on the record across the board as saying it does not want a nuclear weapon.

–Non-proliferation expert Joe Cirincione: “Iran has never said it wanted a nuclear weapon for any reason. It’s just not true.

The experts added that Bush’s claim is “troubling,” “as uninformed as [Sen. John] McCain’s [R-AZ] statement that Iran is training al-Qaeda” and “only produces” such rhetoric from Iran.

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe stretched to explain Bush’s gaffe, saying “the president shorthanded” Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s desire “to wipe Israel off the map.” Asked about Iranian leaders’ potential to exploit Bush’s false claim for political purposes, Johndroe said “I’m not concerned about that. If they want to spin it a certain way, they can do it any way they want.”

Indeed, Bush’s “shorthand” with the facts in the run up to the Iraq war is exactly what led to the “most dangerous” foreign-policy blunder since Vietnam.

Update Dan Froomkin notes that Bush "said almost exactly the same thing" last August. Bush: Iran "has proclaimed its desire to build a nuclear weapon."

The signs are there for an Iraq redux with Iran. John McCain tied al Qaeda to the Iranian government, George Bush talked about a mushroom cloud “destroying people”, and Dick Cheney rode around the Middle East in a reprise of his pre-Iraq war tour.

Even though you moonbats can’t put the two together and reach the only correct conclusion (Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons), I’m glad that we’ve still got an administration that can.
    ________________________________________

Let’s suppose for a moment that your absurd statement is true (explaining why it isn’t would just lead the thread off-topic). That’s not the issue here. Bush said (and this is a direct quote), “they’ve declared they want to have a nuclear weapon to destroy people,” which is a lie. There’s no record of Iran making any such declaration.

There’s a big difference between drawing a conclusion of “X” based on cherry-picked evidence and making a blatant accusation that “X” was declared. Try to stay on track here.

  29. RantingTommy says:

must have, fred, – he was claiming that the pres of Iran had said he wanted to wipe Israel off the map and that he was developing weaponizable nuclear fuel, which both have been debunked

  30. cerberus says:

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe stretched to explain Bush’s gaffe, saying “the president shorthanded” Iranian President Ahmadinejad’s desire “to wipe Israel off the map.”

And the truth to this is that Ahmadinejad never said he wanted to “wipe Israel off the map”. He said he wanted to wipe the rulers of Israel off the map. There is a HUGE difference between the two.

Good point. Translations are always tricky to get right. And its deeply troubling that people in very high places dont bother to actually get things straight before going warmongering, talking about mushroom clouds and World War III.

There’s a huge difference between wishing for the end of the zionistic policies of Israel, and threatening to “wipe out” the state of Israel.

  33. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

  35. cerberus says:

And the war drum beats on…..da-dum, da-dum. Bush’s wet dream is to engage us in war with Iran before he leaves office and goes into exile in Paraguay on his oasis. Since the NIE intel (and Hillary’s double dupe?? by voting aye – huge mistake) does not support Dumbo, he’s going to have to stir the pot quick briskly to ever garner any support for war with Iran. Oh yeah – almost forgot about his partner in crime, John Bomb Iran McCrazy. I think it will distill down to McTorture being his only friend in the world soon.

  36. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Oh well…you know what I mean. I’m having a bad day today.

  37. cerberus says:

Bilbo: What I find disturbing is that Bush doesn’t even hide the fact that he’s lied to the people and continues to do so. To him (as the sociopath whom he is) it’s some kind of feather in his cap – a major nyuk-nyuk to believe that he’s being allowed to do so. He’s revulsive at this point and people can’t even watch his evil countenance on the television without wretching.

  38. Fred says:

    Southern Man,
I will say that I have just as much reason to believe Ahmadinejad as I do to believe bush. In fact Ahmadinejad has never been proven to be a liar…..bush has.

You exhibit a weak mind. One that cannot work these things out for yourself or allow yourself to doubt the people you have convinced yourself are acting in your best interest……kind of a jimmy jones thing.

  39. RantingTommy says:

pffft, “southern man”, you may be southern, but you need to man up if you really believe America is so weak that Iran is a threat to it.

American Idol watching, Fox news believing, Limbaugh listening, SUV driving, authoritarian worshiping, country ‘music’ blaring, pissing-in-your-pants cowards like you are more of a threat to America than Iran and its electrical plants could ever be.

    Grow a pair, you sissy.

  40. mary says:

SM – one of the problems with your line of reasoning is that attacking Iran would probably not even help out the one ally that you must be referring to. It would inflame the region even further.

But, the point of this thread is that Bush LIED. Get it?

BTW, Bush making false claims does not exactly endear the entire country of Iran to us and in fact could very well be used to push people away from us and back to their own leaders. It’s counter-productive. So, is Bush just stupid? (and doesn’t get that) Or, does Bush WANT to inflame the region further and provoke violence?

Iran may not be a direct threat to us, but they are a threat to our allies. But who needs allies, right?

Who are these “allies” you’re blubbering over ?

    Israel ?

“Reminiscent”, Marie? It’s the same damn script! They didn’t even bother to re-write it so it sounds different. They just scratched out “Iraq” and wrote in “Iran” above it.

(They tried just scratching out the “Q” and writing in an “N” but it was too hard for Bush to read.)

Pakistan already has nuclear weapons and an unstable government… the failure of the U.S. to secure Afghansistan has only led to more instability in Pakistan… the “Mission” to disarm Saddam revealed that we were right and that the sanctions were working…

Al Qaeda hoped that the U.S. would get sucked into a ground conflict in Afghanistan that would last for years and cost trillions of dollars and give them new recruits for their terrorism- they were demoralized when the Taliban fell as quickly as it did.

Really? Why was Bush’s grandfather convicted of illegally trading with Hitler during WWII? Who was the president during WWII? Oh yeah, the DEMOCRAT who pulled us out of the REPUBILCAN GREAT DEPRESSION.

I respect and honor those who are fighting, not because I believe the war is right but becuase I respect their sacrifices. I fight against this war in Iraq, and the impending war in Iran becuase i respect and honor those men and women. You are hiding behind them becuase you are a cowardly punk ass loser. You’re a coward, a liar, and an ignorant bed-wetting sissy who is scared of everything.

You are easily manipulated by both republicans and their terrorist allies into allowing them to raid our treasury, harm our military, foment anti-American sentiment around the world, and pass the bill onto future generations.

You really have no reason to continue living, as life is a pretty scary concept for sissies like you. I believe you should go immediately to a hospital for the criminally ignorant and check yourself in.

Jason doesn’t know the difference between someone who was duly elected by the people of the country they rule and a “dictator”. I suspect it thinks that if the person is not ruling in a way that is pleasing to the US, that makes the leader a Dictator.

Well, by Jason’s standards, that makes George Bush a dictator to a large number of people in this country since only 19% think this country is headed in the right direction.

“If you people had been in power in 1942, all of Europe, Asia, and Africa would be under German control.”
    – Were you sleeping during history class? Do you truly not know that probably the ultimate progressive, Franklin Roosevelt was President in 1942?

“Hell, we probably would have allied with the Germans!!!”
    – Which didn’t happen. We fought against the Germans. We won, along with the other Allied nations. And this was with one of “us” at the helm. You are so anxious to blame every ill in the world on progressives that you are willing to rewrite history to do so. When our leaders rewrite history, they look like fools. It’s the same for blog posters.

“3985 families of Soldiers who volunteered to join the military…”
    – Actually, not all were volunteers. Those who had been ’stop-loss’ed certainly weren’t, even if they did volunteer when they first joined up. However, when the U.S. wouldn’t let them go after the term for which they volunteered was up, they were no longer volunteers, they were draftees.

“…knowing full well that they were putting themselves in harms way…”
    – not all of them “knew” what they were getting into. Those who were already in the service before the invasion (especially those who joined up immediately after 9/11) trusted the government to ask them to fight only battles that were just, and causes that directly had to do with defending our country. Yes, they knew they could die fighting for a righteous cause. But it’s a stretch to imagine they all knew they would wind up being sitting ducks in a lost cause quagmire with no end in sight. This is especially true of the National Guard, most of whom thought their service would consist of fighting disasters back home.

“…to protect the freedom of an ungrateful slug like yourself to call their sacrifices useless.”
    – The gratuitous insult doesn’t enhance your post, but that’s a small point. The bigger point here is the myth that dying in Iraq has something to do with our freedom. It doesn’t. As much as the warmongers and fear squad try to make us believe that terrorists will come marching down Main Street USA if we don’t continue to occupy Iraq, it’s not convincing. There are plenty of terrorists in the world (and our occupation of Iraq is effectively recruiting more and more of them every day). If they wanted to march down Main Street right now, the conflict in Iraq wouldn’t stop them. In fact, since our National Guard is over there, we would be hard pressed to deal with a significant terrorist attack here. And just because we recognize that Iraq is not a cause worth dying for doesn’t mean we don’t weep for every soldier that has been killed there.

“You are a truly ugly and pathetic being.”
    – Name calling and personal attacks generally indicate that you’ve run out of debate that’s to the point.

Hugo Chavez is not a dictator??? The guy that has shut down communications in the country to silent dissent against him? The guy the TOOK CONTROL OF THE OIL COMPANIES is not a dictator???

    ——————-
I’m not one for arguing with trolls. But I must dispute the claim that Hugo Chavez is a dictator. I apologize for this long post but it is necessary.

…President Hugo Chávez and his government have won multiple elections that were characterized as free and fair by international observers.

For example, this is what the Carter Center delegation said about the 2004 presidential recall referendum:

“On Aug. 15, 2004, Venezuelans came out in record numbers to participate in the first popularly mandated presidential recall referendum ever to be held. In doing so, the Venezuelan people voted not to recall President Chávez from office, with 59 percent of the population voting for Chávez and 41 percent voting against him. It is the opinion of The Carter Center that the Aug. 15 vote clearly expressed the will of the Venezuelan electorate.”

Indeed, here’s what the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs wrote last October about the elections in 1998 and 1999 – this is on the State Department’s web page:

“In December 1998, Hugo Chávez Frias won the presidency on a campaign for broad reform, constitutional change, and a crackdown on corruption…Chávez’s argument that the existing political system had become isolated from the people won broad acceptance, particularly among Venezuela’s poorest classes, who had seen a significant decline in their living standards over the previous decade and a half. The National Constituent Assembly (ANC), consisting of 131 elected individuals, convened in August 1999 to begin rewriting the Constitution. In free elections, voters gave all but six seats to persons associated with the Chávez movement. Venezuelans approved the ANC’s draft in a national referendum on December 15, 1999.”

On January 31 of this year, the Miami Herald reported,

“Human Rights Watch on Thursday said Venezuela does not belong to a group of nations like Pakistan and Russia that use the veneer of democracy to mask autocratic rule…’We did not include Venezuela in the list of closed countries because it is not,’ Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth said, unveiling the organization’s 2008 World Report, which highlighted leaders who claim to be democratic but take autocratic measures…’There are serious problems in Venezuela, but we shouldn’t pretend that Venezuela is a closed society,’ he said. ‘There still is significant political competition, and indeed the best evidence of that was the fact that Chávez just lost his referendum.’ “

    ————————–
Those tv stations were advocating the overthrow of the Chavez government. That’s seditious. They people behind the station should’ve been imprisoned.

Its up to the Venezuelan people to decide if they want their oil nationalized. They obviously support it because they elected Hugo Chavez. Many countries nationalize their oil. It’s none of our business what they do with their oil. Chavez is using the profits to rebuild his country and help the poor.

We overthrew the Democratically elected government of Iran in 1953 because they were planning on nationalizing their oil. That brought the Shah into power. And it led to the hostage crisis of 1979. Once again, in 2008, Iran wants even more control over their oil. They opened up their own trading “bourse” that no longer accepts American dollars. Not surprisingly the U.S. is planning to attack Iran. To any logical observer Iran is not the problem, Nationalizing Oil is not the problem. The problem is US!

Iran: No nukes, terrorism, or threats to other countries.

    There is no evidence
(not withstanding the most recent NIE) that Iran has ever had a nuclear weapons program or any desire to have one.

Ahmadinejad has consistently said he wants peace with all nations and has not threatened to attack any nation (other than in self-defense). It should be noted that, unlike almost virtually all western nations, Iran has not attacked another country in two centuries.

    To Bilbo Hussein Baggins #31:
Your comment is not quite accurate. You are right in one way; Ahmadinejad never said he wanted to wipe Israel off the map. But neither did he ever say he wanted to wipe the rulers of Israel off the map. In the speech Ahmadinejad never mentioned the words Israel, wipe, OR map. (In fact there are no words or phrases in Farsi that resemble the phrase “wipe off the map”.) He listed several murderous tyrannical governments that had (peacefully, by the way) “disappeared from the pages of time”. He was giving hope that there would someday be regime change relieving Jerusalem from brutal tyranny.
Again, Ahmadinejad has consistently said he wants peace with all nations.

    Peace, JK

    >or have you not really thought this through ?

Have you? By your own argument that we should listen to words more than deeds (if that what your saying i agree with that), then we should look to modern Irans history of invading nations (or thier lack of doing so), rather than thier inflamatory rhetoric.

Not sure why you even mention Irans involvement with Hezbollah, etc, anyone who isnt naive knows just about every country with any degree of power funds groups who engage in asymetrical proxy wars to further thier interests. By your argument israels support of lebanese christian militias who sometimes acted very brutally and committed warcrimes during lebanons civil war would logically lead us to beleive that israel is some sort of threat just like iran is, correct?

Thanks for your thoughts but your one way thinking doesnt past the smell test..

  194. Bluestocking says:
