Rove bashes ‘hate-filled, obscenity-clogged’ blogs.

In an interview with Newsbusters, former Bush adviser Karl Rove claimed that the conservative blogosphere “has much better quality and quantity” than the progressive blogosphere. Calling left-leaning blogs “unpersuasive,” Rove said “they are, most of them are hate-filled, obscenity-clogged rants of anger and hatred.” Rove has made similar netroots bashing comments before, claiming in a speech last year that bloggers are “nutty,” “vitriolic,” and “kooks.”

This is standard right-wing playbook stuff, some would say a Rovian tactic. Take your greatest weakness and apply it to your opponent.

In this case, we contrast right-wing blogs filled with neo-fascist hate speech, diatribes against gays, immigrants, minorities, etc. against left-wing blogs which are understandably upset about a government which is no longer accountable to the American people and is conducting a pre-emptive war based on a false premise, and doing it badly.

The goal of Rove is to conflate truly odious speech, filled with bigotry and hateful divisive rhetoric, with citizens exercising their duty as Americans to question their governments actions.

Here on TP, I see a lot of quality content and many thoughtful and interesting posts. However, I also see many obscenities, ad hominem attacks, general name-calling, and contributions to the discussion that are anything but helpful – many by my fellow progressives.

We have a few progressive posters here who feel it is their job to insult any opposing viewpoint, no matter how civilly presented.

We have some work to do to clean up our own yard.

That said — I have seen rightwing blogsites and comment boards, and they show every bit as much hatred and anger (and frequently more than I’ve EVER seen here).

I suspect that Karl Rove just lives by his own set of double-standards. A slam against a neocon is “hate speech”, but a slam against a progressive is “free speech”. He probably looks at the vitriolic diatribes on the righty sites and honestly doesn’t see them as offensive.

  24. McWars says:

Also, I don’t have much experience on righty blogs, and the few times I have been on one, the cmments have been pretty orderly, not much vitriol really. Of course, that’s easy to maintain when everyone agrees with everyone else.

What I haven’t seen on those blogs is any vigorous progressive or liberal presence — certainly nothing like the conservative infestations we get here.

If that makes Karl Rove happy to point to the supposed decorum of right wing bloggers, so be it. It’s not ike he’s a slave to the truth, anyway.

  32. J says:

    Two points…

    1. I can name 5 progressive blogs to one right-wing blog. Does that mean that I am more inclined to ignore the vast right-wing blogosphere based on my views, or is Rove talking out of his posterior.

    2. This just in, I like people that agree with me.

I understand the frustrations that accompany political differences. The insults, threats and profanity don’t make the site more credible. They detract. Without restraint, TP becomes less credible and more irrelevant. I believe that’s not going to further the goals of progressives to make the world a better place.

I suggest instead of banning people from the site, those who post here should police their own. If members stray into unproductive profanity, insults or threats – each should personally intercede to bring that member back to a more productive debate. Appeasing or ignoring the radical comments suggests concurrence and dilutes the reasonable message that progressives might hope to spread.

It’s up to each of us, whether this place will really be a catalyst to promote progress towards a better future, or whether it will decay into nothing more than a limited community of radical, unproductive rants.

But, regardless of whose spreading the hate, it’s still not the right avenue to make things better.

It’s one of the reasons, I like Barrack Obama. He seems like he can thrive without it.

  44. And Yet... says:

And yet again Rove looks in the mirror, describing himself. Which is all he is ultimately capable of focussing on. Try any angle as you might, but as in some surreal nightmare scenario, you only catch your own image, Karl, when you spew.

Good-bye to Karl, & very soon.

  45. Skeeter1 says:

Put this one in stone: This will be the ONLY time I ever agree with Rove (to a degree) (and I STRONGLY disagree with him that the left is worse than the right. The complete opposite is true. The right wing blogs tend to contain nothing other than hatred mixed with paranoia. Apparently, even when they held all branches of government, people were still Out To Get Them).

I have to admit that some of the blog comments here and elsewhere do cross the line to the inappropriate. As bad as the conduct of the B-Team is, we must be better than they are. We must attack their positions without lowering our own standards. Too often I have seen that here and I’m disappointed.

As I said though, I will take the quality of comments on this blog any day over some of the strange right wing garbage that I see.

  46. Bobwurst says:

It all depends on what your definition of hate filled is. Rove obvously hates the truth

  47. dasm says:

Since Rove may not be totally deluded, we have to accept that he is aware of his lying with these comments. All one has to do is visit various blog sites to understand quickly that the vast majority of hate, smears, and lies come from the right. Perhaps this is because what most right-wing bloggers use as ‘facts’ are just the reverse- lies, innuendoes, distortions put forth by Fox, Limbaugh, etc. It is certainly also due to the fact that Rove, and the Repub media machine, base all their methods on attacks- attacks of anyone who disagrees, and attacks on the majority of Americans, who they constantly label ‘unpatriotic’, ‘treasonous’, etc. every time those Americans voice a view different from Rove et al. The language of many of these Repub supporters is vile and hateful, often targeting women, gays, and ethnic groups.

  48. The Shadow says:

Since you went there Karl, I’ll pay along. You spit venom at people and then claim they started it. Just like the visit to the University of Iowa. When people disagreed with you comments you started calling them names. You called on man “stupid” also said he was a “nobody and not important”, I mean come on man. Don’t you read your own press clippings?

In fact I wrote to the President of the University complaining about the way you treated people who questioned your comments. And I have the e-mail the University President’s office sent me. So why this man would say such stupid things is beyond me. Clearly Karl Rove is anti American and has used divisive political tactics to divide us along race, gender, and idealogy. This man will go down in history, not as a political genius, but as a joke.

  49. Pete Bogs says:

it’s actually conservative talk shows on TV and radio that are spewing the most hatred outside of Fred Phelps and white supremacist groups these days… and Rovey just landed a job with one – Fox News…

progressives do get angry and frustrated and vent at times verbally…..for the most part and unless provoked though…..they are peace loving people when compared to almost anyone on the right.

    Cases in point:

Violence against other members of same society by right leaning individuals:
    violence against gays……..
    abortion clinic murder and violence
violence against people of other color…racism.
    etc.

You cannot make parallel comparisons for left leaning people as far as actual actions are concerned. Venting anger is perhaps unhealthy and unproductive but it is not the same as promoting and actually acting out the violence.

I would go further and say that any progressive anger you experience is provoked and not the normal nature of the progressive…..can’s say the same for the right wing….they are the ones who provoke the violence and hatred….

    ============================================================

For the longest time, I have asked that TP implement a system where out-of-control bloggers (good_golly on the right, arn gunnutes on the left, for instance) would not necessarily get a flag for their behavior (which would choke up TP’s work) but instead get a negative karma point. For an example of this in action, go to http://www.americablog.com, and check out their commenting system.

You still have the report abuse flag, but that’s only to be used when abuse actually happens. However, if GG were to suddenly be subjected to negative karma, plus a _real_ karma system that remembers how many times he’s been recommended down, then eventually, his Karma will go so low that preferences can be set to hide or mask his posts, and eventually, he’ll fall out of the conversation entirely. Same with arn gunnutes. As both will lose the attention they crave, they’ll eventually give up and go away, and eventually the system will learn and let us traffic ourselves.

    Seriously, go check it out.

  60. Robt says:

And Karl Rove’s credability outside of ideological extreme partisanship to speak on this matter with any sincereness and honest knowledge has been established how?

Rove is a man that places the republican party over America.
That the Constitution is not even second to his GOP’s rightful authority.

So let us keep Rove (turdblossom) in perspective. He is one guy in the media with one “opinion”. Sure he is in the midst of all the same Murdoch minions and their opinions. He doesn’t bring anything viable to the media that maulkin, Coulter, O Rielly et al have. He won’t last long in the private GOP media. His hiring is essentially to promote his loyalty to the president over the Constitution and Americans across the nation.

This opinionized media job must be embarrassing for the GOP and Rove. Remember, Wolfowitz was rewarded with the position at the world bank. But he abused that position and is back in the State Dept as a low leveler.

Bush didn’t even offer Rove an Ambassadorship to some country as the “Swift Boat Capt” of Kerry attacks received the Ambassadorship to Germany. Rove’s lifespan on Murdoch’s FOX is limited ideological corporate welfare in Rove’s case.

This is an excellent point — circle jerks are almost always fawningly civil.

No, when I said that I saw plenty of hate and vitriol on right wing sites, I meant that most of it was aimed at the target du jour — against Obama, against Hillary, against “libruls” in general, etc. etc.

  63. backup says:

    Bilbo.

I checked out your site. The racist comments detract from anything reasonable the site might have to offer.

Again, I feel that the answer is not to ban those people (to steer their hate somewhere else) but to try to redirect them, with peer pressure.

I admit you’re not going to change some (or maybe most) that start off with that kind of sentiment. But, I suggest it’s worth a sincere effort and I feel that with a little patience, a would-be rejected ‘troll’ might be persuaded to consider progressive ideas. You know the ideas are strong. And even if you don’t get a pure convert, you might just get a moderation in their position. Isn’t that the only real possibility of significant change.

  64. Peter C says:

Personally, I don’t think we should agonize over criticism from the likes of Rove. In my experience, most all of the vitriol on this blog has been PROVOKED in such a systematic way that I can only conclude that it was intentional and strategic. I believe they provoke anger so they can dismiss our valid criticisms of policy as mere “hate”. When the administrators of the site added the capability for us to report abuse, the tone of the whole blog improved markedly.

For the most part, I believe we come here because we care passionately about the issues of the day. That is good and right. Also, on the whole we and our ideals have been abused wholesale by the current administration and its surrogates. When these surrogates appear as trolls to trigger our anger, we needn’t beat ourselves up too much over criticism of our civility toward them. I think we should just be more free about reporting them for abuse, and while we wait for them to be expelled, we should talk about them and not to them. Most have proven that they are not worthy of a reply. I find this is the best way for me to express my rage without broadcasting my hate. Our rage is justified, correct, and appropriate; our hate is justified too, but seldom constructive or beneficial, and I fear it does us more harm than good.

You should be glad we have these blogs because my guess is you’d be the first guy to be seized by the people should our frustrations overwhelm us because there was no other way to complain.

violence against people of other color…racism.

Fred, you’ve got a point. I obviously oppose violence against abortion clinic personnel, homosexuals and people of any race.

I would only make the point that those incidents are relatively uncommon today (I’ll take a look if you have different data). The more prevalent problem today, seems to be hate speech and intolerance, without regard to a particular ideology.

obscene is the Fact that Rove is still not behind barrs!

  75. sacopenapa says:

    Rove… obscene is treason!

Obscene is the War Criminal Dick Chenney contempt to public opinion: “So?”

  77. Crazy Cat Lady says:

    Damn, everyone, this is great!

Instead of immediately saying “not me, not me – it’s THEM who are so bad” many of you instantly soul-search and honestly try to evalute if the statement is true, and discuss how to fix it. I’ve been pretty depressed with the state of our country for years, but my daily visits over the past few weeks to TP have helped me see that there is hope! Please keep it up! Truth and integrity are worth fighting for.

    Peace.

I’m a nutty, vitriolic kook, huh?

I just have one thing to add to that – I have been called worse things by better people than that smarmy, obscene waste of skin.

  79. Evil Spaniard says:

Better bad mouthed than a killer conspirator, Rovey, SOB.

  80. Jericho says:

    I think Rove’s saying: Where’s the love?

My guess is you dropped a bomb on it, triggerhappy.

  81. nofltwlt says:

Rove should reflect upon why it is that right after Bush he is one of the most hated men on earth.

The reason he is hated is because of what he did, and tried but failed, to do to our country. Rove, along with many conspirators, tried to usurp the control of this country by conservatives. This is what he and Tom Delay stated. They were intent upon establishing permanent republican control.

Ha! Instead he is reponsible for the complete collapse of the GOP, Bush and the neocons.

Now, make him pay for his transgressions.

  82. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >It’s obvious that Karl hasn’t read this little study in >progressive intellectual discourse.

The fact that your IP, (and the IP’s of everyone in a 50 mile radius of whatever inbred trailer park you come from) hasnt been banned is a testament to the receptiveness the left has for dissenting opinions. I’m sure the visciousness and venom on this site would be expontentially dwarfed by the venom any left wing poster would receive on a rightwing blog, if in fact there were any that didnt outright ban anyone with a dissenting opinion..

Reminds me of that moron Bigfwat, so incredibly stupid that he was “proud to still be here” (on this website), when in fact the only reason he still was able to post was that the moderators of this website were nothing like the moderators of sites he supports.

Make no mistake about it guys, Rove hates blogs, etc, for one reason… he can’t buy them like he can buy the “media”…. they are paradoxically both the source of the most deluded idiocy and the rawest and most honest truth…..these days, if a politician tells a lie, chances are its going to be debunked all over the internet in less than 24 hours, unlike the media, which would likely never mention it. to a lifelong propagandist like rove, the ability to debunk lies makes the internet an enormous danger..

ps. hey HoHam Gen(derBender)..Im STILL waiting for your smart @ss to explain to me how “the presses” could be literally interperted to include handwriten notes, something thats xeroxed, or email…

  83. ctalk says:

    Rove: “unpersuasive”

    Translation: Very persuasive.

Rove thinks blogs are very persuasive and is terrified of them. Evil republicans have raised hypocrisy to an art form.

Blogs are helping end the reign of these disgusting criminals, more power to them!

  84. williamf says:

Karl Rove is a criminal. A vote stealer and smoke and mirrors man. He has achieved what little recognition he has because he manipulates, lies, and deceives. Karl Rove is a great deceiver. He has polarized the political landscape. He is one of the causes of our present sorrygovernment and he revels in it. What he says has no merit for honest, hard-working, real Americans. He intentionally insults the blogosphere because he fears it and he has no idea how many Americans of all walks of life use it. Karl Rove is a slanderer and spins hate and discord.

  85. rico_9225 says:

As long as the media plays along with Karl to deceive, misinform and misdirect, Karl will make a few dollars. You will notice, no one ever asks Karl a hard confronting question about his words or actions.
