Following weeks of oil prices hitting over $100 a barrel, Vice President Dick Cheney met Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah on Friday “for talks that will include discussions on cooperation to stabilize the oil market.” I’m sure they will talk about the need for a cooperative way forward to try and stabilize this market, reduce the volatility in the market, and serve the interests of both consumers and producers alike,” John Hannah, national security adviser to Cheney, told reporters.

ABC News reports that at least two Iraqi families of victims killed by Blackwater security guards in September say “they have refused compensation offered by the company.” The families were offered $20,000 for each victim.

A new Fox poll asserts that the American public believes John McCain will be strongest against bin Laden. McCain however would not have authorized strikes inside Pakistan that took out high value al Qaeda targets, nor would he authorize a strike against bin Laden inside Pakistan without that country’s permission.

According to the Washington Post, “[i]nflation is walloping Americans with low and moderate incomes as the prices of staples have soared.” The Post found that “there is a big divide” in price rises between “the basic items people need to live and get to work, and those on which they can easily cut back when times are tight.”

As Wall Street is “caught in a credit crisis,” the economic slowdown is heading toward Main Street and “seeping into new parts of the country, to communities that seemed insulated only months ago” which is “fueling worries that what most economists now see as an inevitable recession could end up being especially painful.”

General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz acknowledged the car company made a mistake by not making a hybrid car. “We had the technology to come out with a hybrid at the same time as Toyota,” Lutz said Tuesday. “In hindsight, it was a mistake. … We made the mistake and we won’t make it again.”

“China’s crackdown in Tibet will not cause President Bush to cancel his planned trip to the Beijing Olympics, the White House said Thursday.”

The success of the US ’surge’ strategy in Iraq may be under threat as Sunni militia employed by the US to fight al Qaida are warning of a national strike because they are not being paid regularly.” Leading members of the awakening councils “have said they will stop fighting unless payment of their $10 a day wage is resumed.” According to a survey by GuardianFilms, four of the 49 councils have quit while 38 more are threatening to leave.

And Finally: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) doesn’t have royal blood. Publishers of McCain’s book, Hard Call, say that the senator is “related to the Scottish king, Robert the Bruce, on his mother’s side,” but “genealogists and medieval historian” tasked to investigate the link say it’s not so, calling it “wonderful fiction” and “baloney”.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

    Great, just what we need.

Put them all together, folks! We now see what the result is when we A) continue to remain oil dependent without aggressively developing alternative energy sources, B) elect leadership whose main concern is shoveling gobs of money in the direction of their oil buddies, and C) develop our communities and infrastructure around the automobile.

The price of oil has hit record highs. While the lower economic classes have always struggled to get by, the middle class is now being hit. Filling up the gas tank is now a major expense, and because of suburban sprawl and a lack of adequate public transit in most communities, there’s not much choice to commuting by car. The price of groceries and other goods have gone up because the cost of transporting them has become so high. More and more Americans are maxing out credit cards just to stay afloat, and this credit debt bubble will eventually burst.

Meanwhile, our leaders soldier on their course to doom, telling the masses they can eat cake.

Way to go, Bushco. You have taken “worst ever” to impressive new depths.

  7. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Regarding Obama’s passport records being hacked. Admittedly I didn’t read all the posts last night, but did any one address the fact that it was “like father like son”? Someone in the Bush Sr. administration hacked into Bill Clinton’s passport records back then. And, of course, the investigation found that there was no criminal intent.

I would like to hear the whole story on this. Who, what, when, where, why and how. There were three separate instances. Were they all done by the same three people? Did the three people who did it know each other. Why did one person not get fired?

This is going to be a very big story. Hopefully TP won’t ignore it beyond posting the original article about it. I bet it really frosted TP that they had to report the story.

  8. Peter C Says:

Personally, I refuse to put any stock in a Fox poll. Trusting FOX to tell the truth in an accurate way seems to me to be foolhardy in the extreme. I feel the same way about the Bush Administration. I will never give the benefit of the doubt to anyone associated with the current regime or who supported the current regime.

    Democrats want higher gas prices.

The lies start early. Goon, that is ONE Democrat. Just yesterday you were trying to pretend that all Republicans don’t share the opinions of one fanatic and that you realized all Democrats don’t share the opinions of one preacher. Here you are, back in form, lying through your teeth.

But since you’re here, please explain how Al Qaeda can use Iraqi oil to amass great wealth without production or sales. We’re still waiting.

  10. McWars Says:

ABC News reports that at least two Iraqi families of victims killed by Blackwater security guards in September say “they have refused compensation offered by the company.” The families were offered $20,000 for each victim.

Hands down, the Iraqi people attest more to family values than any neocon breaking himself into a sweat, preaching about it for hours. These families are trapped in the worse living conditions right now on this planet, and they will not forfeit their right to seek the truth and see justice done. They know the better payout will come.

  11. Kay Says:

It all started before 9/11. A little known publication called
“Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources For a New Century” written by a coterie of neoCONS.
(Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz etc) — it was all part of a master plan to beef up the Military.

Section V of Rebuilding America’s Defenses, entitled “Creating Tomorrow’s Dominant Force”, includes the sentence: “Further, the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event––like a new Pearl Harbor”.

Well, it does not take a genius to figure out who was behind 9/11. We have developed into an Authoritarian Government. With the Patriot Act, The Military Commissions Act, The John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 keeping this in mind with the wiretapping this great nation is teetering toward full blown Fascist Rule.

It wouldn’t take much. As Cheney slinks around the Middle East you can bet something is going on regarding Iran.

But,I digress. This security breach re: Obama is just a microcosm of what is happening right now in this country. I hope the source of this is fully identified. But, you know these Criminals that are installed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are so slick. They are like teflon. Not a goddamn thing seems to have stuck these past 8 years.

And they continue to get away literally with murder (see: 9/11, men and women in Iraq, Katrina etc).

Obama really needs to stand up here. This great nation is crumbling (economically, spiritually etc) before our very eyes. I don’t have all the answers but turning off “American Idle would be a good start.

  12. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

“fueling worries that what most economists now see as an inevitable recession could end up being especially painful.”

Yeah, like going from a recession to a depression in a heartbeat.

Hey, if this country goes bankrupt, does that mean that we won’t have to repay China the billions of dollars we have borrowed from them for occupying Iraq?

  13. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

“We had the technology to come out with a hybrid at the same time as Toyota,” Lutz said Tuesday. “In hindsight, it was a mistake. … We made the mistake and we won’t make it again.”

GM would have been even farther ahead of the pack if they hadn’t killed the electric car way back when. Imagine where we would be today if we had followed through on the things that Carter started regarding relieving our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. We would be sitting pretty today. But, Ronald Ray-Gun put a stop to that.

  14. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

“The success of the US ’surge’ strategy in Iraq may be under threat as Sunni militia employed by the US to fight al Qaida are warning of a national strike because they are not being paid regularly.”

Wait a minute. Why are WE paying them to do what they should be doing for themselves? Iraq is NOT going to step up to the plate and take charge of their country until we leave. It’s time to go NOW!

  16. VerbalKint Says:

By the way, liar, there is considerable evidence that raising the gas tax will simply reduce oil industry profits, rather than drive the price higher. This is due to the law of supply and demand, which you and most other Republicans don’t seem to understand.

  17. VerbalKint Says:

I wish the paid liar would just shut up and go away, but that won’t happen until November 5th, when he is out of a job.

  18. And the beat goes on Says:

Military veterans to deliver citizen arrest warrants for Bush and Cheney
Backed by family members and supporters all across the nation, U.S. military veterans will serve citizen arrest warrants for George Bush and Dick Cheney tomorrow in Washington, D.C.

The warrants are “for multiple violations of the Constitution and international war crimes,” according to a statement issued by Veterans for Peace, a national organization of men and women who served in wars and military conflicts beginning with the Spanish Civil War in 1936 through the present war in Iraq.

“It has long been apparent that our Constitution is under attack and has been deliberately and relentlessly undermined by domestic enemies — indeed, by our highest government officials — who took the same oath we did and have violated it by waging a war of aggression and committing war crimes in Iraq,” according to Veterans for Peace president, Elliott Adams in explaining the warrants.

The warrants will be delivered to the National Archives which houses the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

My brain is spinning at all of the crap that is going on right now. Bush and Cheney continue to spread their evil intentions - probably right up to January, 2009 and our elected, paid representatives in Washington hold “hearings” but don’t do anything with the information. What is wrong with this picture?

    g_g says:

1 in 5 Democrats to Vote for McCain if their candidate (Clinton or Obama looses primary).

Well, we know that Democrats tend to be more educated than Republicans, and we still have more work to do to knock down the all-or-nothing mindset, but if that truly ends up being the case this November, and people would rather see complete evil retained than see even a slight reversal of the decline of our democracy, than this country deserves the stupid government it may vote for.

Who knows, GG, Shrub may have done a reasonably good job dumbing down American society, pulling the most vulnerable people down with him. And it’s battle the most competent people face to gain the positions of responsibility, to wield their power responsibly for the *gasp* betterment *gasp* of our citizenry.

Until then, it’s a narcissistic kingdom.

  20. VerbalKint Says:

“I’ve answered your question on three threads.”

Odd then, liar, that I haven’t seen the answer.

  21. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Among Obama supporters, 20 percent said they would vote for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee, if Clinton beats their candidate for the nomination. Among Clinton supporters, 19 percent said they would support McCain in November if Obama is the Democratic nominee.

I don’t believe this for a minute. Right now there are divisions in the Democratic party thanks to a divisive primary campaign (thank you Hillary Rove Clinton). But, I don’t believe for a minute that any self-respecting Democrat will vote for McCain, especially when they find out that he really isn’t a moderate and he really isn’t a “maverick”, he is nothing more than a pandering old fool.

Once the race is settled, I thoroughly believe that the Democrats will come together and tromp the Republicans. They know that this country cannot survive another four years of Republican rule, especially under someone like McPander.

4 out of 5 say they will vote for Sen. Obama if he wins the nomination.

3 out of 5 say they will not vote at all if Sen. Clinton wins the nomination.

The significant number of potential defectors underscores how divisive the Republican party views Sen. McCain.

  33. VerbalKint Says:

#29 You are a simple minded idiot. Demand will decline at 4 dollars a gallon, so the oil companies will be forced to sell their commodity at a lower price. Also, political pressure to investigate supply and price-fixing in the commodity markets will increase, causing the thieves to back off. When Democrats take power, oil prices will drop considerably, because the oil companies will fear investigations and legal action.

  34. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

One other thing about presidential polls. Right now they mean nothing. Polls can’t take into account things like the fact that Democrats are out voting Republicans 3 to 1. They also don’t take into account the huge number of new, young voters, who are mostly registering as Democrats.

Six months ago polls showed that Clinton would beat Obama by a wide margin. We all know how wrong they were.

Sunni militia strike could derail US strategy against al-Qaida
The success of the US “surge” strategy in Iraq may be under threat as Sunni militia employed by the US to fight al-Qaida are warning of a national strike because they are not being paid regularly.

Leading members of the 80,000-strong Sahwa, or awakening, councils have said they will stop fighting unless payment of their $10 a day (£5) wage is resumed. The fighters are accusing the US military of using them to clear al-Qaida militants from dangerous areas and then abandoning them.

A telephone survey by GuardianFilms for Channel 4 News reveals that out of 49 Sahwa councils four with more than 1,400 men have already quit, 38 are threatening to go on strike and two already have.

    snip
In his speech marking the fifth anniversary of the war George Bush highlighted the significance of what he called “the first large-scale Arab uprising against Osama bin Laden”. Iraq, he said, “has become the place where Arabs joined with Americans to drive al-Qaida out.”

But dozens of phone calls to Sahwa leaders reveal bitterness and anger. “We know the Americans are using us to do their dirty work and kill off the resistance for them and then we get nothing for it,” said Abu Abdul-Aziz, the head of the council in Abu Ghraib, where 500 men have already quit.

“The Americans got what they wanted. We purged al-Qaida for them and now people are saying why should we have any more deaths for the Americans. They have given us nothing.”

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/ world/ 2008/ mar/ 21/ iraq.alqaida

We are just making friends all over! Why should we treat them any better than our own citizens?

Obama Tries to Explain ‘Typical White Person’ Comment About Grandmother. Digs hole deeper.

Why do you still not get it?

Obama doesn’t hate anybody. He knows very well that he’s not running to be the President of African-Americans, he’s running to be President of the United States.

And comments like these, no matter how controversial, are made out of frustration, not to mention they didn’t come out of Obama’s mouth. Comments like these are bound to come from a trying segment of our society who can’t seem to get an equitable share of the American pie, or a good rate of access to logistical needs.

Why don’t you lend your support to ease tension instead of picking excuses for more controversy? I spoke of needing to build strong bonds in the bigot Peter Sprigg thread yesterday. If the community under fire huddles and gives them their complete confidence and support to the concerned, there will no longer be the need to spout any ‘Typical White Person’ comments out of sheer frustration.

This is not about you. What can you do for your country?

I’d ask you how the weather was up Obama’s “typical black” ass, but I don’t want to sound like racist Obama who referred to his grandmother as a “typical white woman.” So I’ll just ask, how is the weather up Obama’s racist ass?

Neither does Obama but yet you think he should be horse whipped for something that his pastor said that he (Obama) doesn’t agree with.

    Very hypocritical of you.

The Guardian: The Surge May Be On The Verge Of Collapse
from crooks and liars dot com 3.21.08

Our occupation of Iraq and the fragile surge has been all but blacked out in the U.S. media, but thankfully, the foreign press is still out there trying to bring the truth to the rest of the world. A big part of the surge was the Awakening Project. The goal of the project was to pay Sunni and former insurgents to fight al Qaeda and drive them out of their towns. The result is 80,000 angry men and a surge on the brink of collapse.

Despite spending some $12 billion dollars a month in Iraq, the Bush administration has failed to pay most of the Awakening members and their patience is all but gone. Thousands of men have given up and walked away from the program and resentment toward the U.S. has reached a boiling point. This video from The Guardian is a real eye opener as they go inside these groups and let them tell their stories in their own words.

They hear news accounts that the U.S. military is taking credit for the surge and they are angered. They feel that they are doing the dirty work that Americans should be doing and they feel they’re being used as propaganda to sway the U.S. presidential elections. Senator John McCain has staked his entire presidential campaign on Iraq and the success of the surge. I hope that he, along with all Americans, has the chance to watch this video and see the real surge.

    Good_Golly:

One thing you fail to understand is that Barrack Obama is, in fact, half white. That gives him some flexibility when it comes to using stereotypes - right or wrong.

If a black person uses a stereotype about black people, it’s not generally seen as offensive. Similarly, if a white person uses a stereotype about white people, it’s not generally seen as offensive. Much in the same way that a black person can use the “N” word, whereas it’s not OK for a white person to use that same word. You may not understand the reasoning behind that, but it’s true.

My kids are inter-racial, too. They are exposed to a ton of white people, like me. They are also exposed to a ton of black people, like my wife. That will give them much deeper insights into both communities.

I don’t mean to say that stereotyping is OK - but it is a fact of life within most races.

Just wanted to shed some light on Obama’s “typical white person” comment, which you are trying to turn into a real issue.

Easter occurs on the first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the Spring Equinox. To know when to celebrate Easter, the Church needs to Know when the moon is full, and when Spring begins.
On a year like 2008, the moon was full only a day after the equinox. Close .Modern Astronomy makes this an easy call BUT

In earlier times, the Church had a problem, since none of this astronomical information is included in the Bible. They had to rely on Mathematicians …and sought the help of Copernicus to discover when to celebrate Easter.
In one of the great ironys of the ancient world, Copernicus not only determined when to celebrate Easter…but also determined that the calculations were much simpler, and more accurate, if He put the SUN in the center of the solar system.
Thus the churches search for Easter led to a reversal of their long held position that the Earth was at the center of the Universe.

Then he changed his mind as the South threatened secession.

The Republican and Democratic parties EVOLVED between the 1870’s and the 1930’s where the Republicans abandoned any pretense of representing the balck population whilst the Democrats gradually acquired a conscience as well as realizing the potential for developing blacks as a voting bloc.
