Fox’s Chris Wallace Takes Fox And Friends ‘To Task’ For ‘Two Hours Of Obama Bashing’

On Fox and Friends this morning, hosts Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, and Gretchen Carlson spent multiple segments sensationalizing a comment Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) made yesterday, in which he referred to his grandmother as “a typical white person” in some of her racial reactions. Obama made the comment while discussing his recent speech on race relations in America on a Philadelphia radio show.

When the trio welcomed Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace onto the show, instead of previewing his show this weekend, Wallace announced that he was going to take his fellow Fox hosts “to task” for their “excessive” and “somewhat distorting” coverage of what Obama said:

Hey listen, I love you guys but I want to take you to task if I may, respectfully, for a moment. I have been watching the show since 6:00 this morning when I got up, and it seems to me that two hours of Obama bashing on this typical white person remark is somewhat excessive and frankly I think you’re somewhat distorting what Obama had to say.

Wallace — who said that the issue “was a little more complicated than we’ve been portraying” — went on to chastise his very uncomfortable-looking colleagues for the next five minutes. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2008/03/WallaceFoxFriendsObama.320.240.flv]

Trying to defend their coverage, Carlson said they played up Obama’s comment because she “felt that maybe the attention was being taken away from what people really wanted to hear Barack Obama speak about, which was his association and what he thought about the comments by his minister Jeremiah Wright.”

Noting Obama’s speeches this week on the economy and the war in Iraq, Wallace replied that “maybe it’s the media doing” the deflecting:

Far be it for me to be a spokesman for the Obama campaign, and I will tell you that they would laugh at that characterization, but you know, the fact is that after giving a speech on race earlier this week, on Tuesday, he gave a major speech on Iraq on Wednesday and a major speech on the economy yesterday. And so, I think they would say that in terms of deflecting attention away from the issues people really want to hear about, maybe it’s the media doing it, not Barack Obama.

“I appreciate you respecting us enough to say it on camera as opposed to writing an email,” said Kilmeade sarcastically after hearing Wallace’s criticism.

    Thank you Mr. Wallace.

It's nice to see that even those who work at Fox News occasionally start to feel embarrassed about being a propaganda outlet rather than an actual news source.

Absolutely. Say anything you want about HRC. Parse her words to mean anything you want her to say so you can smear her.
But let's play nice with Obama.
I am concerned with his remark because I wonder if he identifies with white folks. He needs to identify with white folks too. But I don't need two hours of it. Thirty seconds will do.

  6. missmolly Says:

Wow -- TWO whole hours of Obama bashing on Fox News this morning? The kool-aid drinkers must be in heaven, and wonder why they can't start their day like this every day.

I'm just impressed that FN managed to spin one innocuous comment by Obama into two hours of trash. Imagine what they could do if Obama REALLY said something inflammatory?

  7. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre Says:

Will the racist corporate right-wing propaganda machines ever stop sliming Obama? Well, they do have to stop and catch their breath now and then, but that's about it. Sliming For Faux and Fascism Forever (SFFAFF)...

  8. Mugsy Says:

    Did Wallace suddenly get religion?

First it was his criticism of Treasury Secretary Paulson evasive on raising sinking dollar on FnS, and now his criticism of over-hyping a remark by Obama.

Maybe Dad gave him "a Talkin' to" last week? :)

  9. joe cantwell Says:

in the midst of their racist rally a person with a conscious speaks up. good for wallace.

    I'm shocked I tell ya.

Wallace's colleagues? Oh sure, and the thumb hits the hammer all the time too. They're colleagues like my dandruff is an accessory.

  15. muzz Says:

I'm so skeptical that it's hard for me to believe anything anymore. All I know is that these people are scared to death of Obama and I think we're only just seeing the beginning of what will be the biggest "bash fest" ever if he gets the nomination. And please "nellre", don't whine about poor Hillary - I'm so sick of the Clinton's I am starting to have the same reactions to them as I do when the chimp makes himself visible.

  16. McWars Says:

    Great job, Mr. Wallace.

Say, if the neocons are personally offended by Obama's remarks, we can't have the first black president.

We have to keep neocons cozy and rich and spirited by a non-PC society. We also have to make sure they aren't offended by those who point out how the Iraqi people are offended by having their infrastructure destroyed and their family members dismembered, and wives and daughters currently working as prostitutes.

How dare you burst the bubble of a neocon, how DARE you. Keep their consumption high. Keep their taxes low. Keep their paychecks overloaded. Keep the wars going and have the middle class for what they don't want. Do NOT compromise their cuddled lifestyle. Keep their coffee hot. Keep their elitist streak going.

  17. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

I guess since Wallace said he has some disagreement with the Obama campaign, Obama is not the anti-christ. A little jokie-joke. I understand what Obama was saying about his beloved grandmother, why can't these idiots.Another point to be made is, where was Fox and friends when Pat Robertson made his weird statements. His ministry IS the ministry of the GOP after all.

Don't forget to share the fruits of your efforts with the rest of us, I simply don't have the time to look right now...

My guess is No, Wallace has probably never been this scrupulous with regards to Clinton...I'm an Obama supporter and I think it's bs the way both she and Obama get treated by the MSM, doesn't mean I won't still vote Obama. I will vote CLinton if she wins the nom, but after everything she's done in this primary season, I'll be holding my nose and she will have a lot of making up to do...

Is Chris finally getting sick of the propoganda? Is he realizing that the Rupublican Party is going to get distroyed this November therefore he wishes to get on the side of truth and responsible reporting? Or is he preping himself for a job search with a respectfull news station? What ever the reason, Mr. Wallace has finally show some journeristic integrity (some). This give the truth some hope. In the end, the truth will be told and the ones spewing the lies will be searching in some off market for employment in the media. Integerty matters in job searches....and Mr. Wallace is showing his.

  21. Yankeluh Says:

I hate to admit this, but perhaps Mr. Wallace actually has some professionalism left. Maybe his conscience is beginning to bother him. (Either that or his dad called and chewed his ass.)

Re; Wallace siding with Obama, has he ever sided with Clinton?

Looking through Media Matters archives, no sympathy for Clinton is evident.

    There is this:

"Echoing McCain talking point, Chris Wallace asked Clinton: "[W]hy are you so determined to declare defeat" in Iraq? Feb 3 2008

He doesn;t appear to have asked Obama that question. Nor of course has he asked McCain it's corollary"

"Senator McCain; Where will you declare victory a century from now--from the George Bush Plaza in Baghdad, from the USS "Itwasworthit" aircraft carrier. or from the Rose Garden?"

Good for Chris Wallace....I gotta tell you though, when I heard that "Typical White Person" statement I just clapped my hand to my forehead and thought no, no, no, what are you doing? Talk about exactly the type of gas he didn't need to throw on the smoldering coals of this week.

And please, don't say that the only people who that will bother are right wing racists, cause it just ain't so and to believe otherwise is wishful thinking.

What a hideous week for Obama. His opponents did no bettter, but he had the highest height to fall from. Depressing.

  37. 5th Estate Says:

Oooh, I think some of us are missing the point of Wallace's new-found sense of. well, sense...

Trying to claim Obama thinks his mother was/is a racist is the DUMBEST THING EVER! Wallace is just trying to save his colleagues from themselves.

Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

  38. joe cantwell Says:

    wallace's remarks were timely.

if you wish to purge your conscious the way the fox and friends crew do in order to live with your own racism by all means go ahead. just don't ask (or expect) the rest of us to join you.

    here endeth the lesson.

What an assinine, misguided observation. The "lesson" - what a joke.

Never in my life, not once have I used the phrase "Typical (fill in color) people" because I know there is no such thing as a typical anything. How 'bout you, Joe? You go around saying "typical_______people"? Well, other than in reference to conservatives because obviously they are all alike.

It was an incredibly dumb thing to say. I took no personal offense, but it was exactly what he didn't need and he did it to himself. I like Obama a ton, he could easily be the first Democratic Presidential candidate I ever vote for. And the truth is, what he said yesterday was a needless misstep.

Yet Limbaugh gets kudos from our government in a friggin vote.

If HRC had said typical New Yorker or something like that, nothing would hit the fan. Obama is allowed to say typical white person, he is a white person. Though he should have probably said average or normal white person to make it sound better.

Ah, more of the "it's okay for blacks to use the n-word" rationalization. Except, Barack is NOT a "white" person. If we go by the notion that "blacks" are judged on their skin color first (which seems to have been the heart and soul of Rev Wright's comments--and also, Venus and Serena's dad's recent comments about tennis being racist), then no one sees Barack as "white".
I also don't see how "average" or "normal" would be any better than "typical" in this instance. The main reason why "typical New Yorker" wouldn't cause a stir (except in New York) is because New Yorkers are Jewish and White and Hispanic and Catholic and, well, you get the idea. The only thing they have in common is where they live. There's no ethnic or religious or gender identity IN COMMON. It's just like the only thing that gay men have in common is their choice of sexual partner is another man but that's it. We're not all gifted with innate fashion sense nor do we all like constant clubbing nor do we all want marriage nor are we all promiscuous nor do we all know the ideal furniture arrangement nor, for that matter, are we all progressive. We're all individuals linked by only one common factor (and even that, as many African-Americans are so willing to throw at us on the marriage-equality issue, is not something that people can always readily see).
IF Barack is as "white" as you want to paint him (forgive the expression), then his "typical white person" comment is even more reprehensible--not less. HE, of all people, should know better, and given his supposed gift for rhetoric, he should also know exactly how to speak by using the right words in the right situation--which is one reason why a number of white people are so offended by the phrasing, coming so soon after he compared his Black PASTOR with his White Grandmother. No matter how close I might ever feel about my pastor or minister (were I a religious person), the only way that I would ever compare him/her to my BLOOD RELATIVE would be if I'd cut that relative out of my life entirely.

  66. IowaMan Says:

Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, and Gretchen Carlson are the 3 Stooges of Morning News. This was a no-brainer for the calculating & manipulative Chris Wallace. This is probably the best media PR stunt of the week!

Does this mean that he sleeps in his suit and his hair never gets messed up? I mean, come on! You wake up, you take a shower, you travel to the studio - all that's got to take up some of the two hours "since you woke up." How much time is left for to watch the show?

  72. melli Says:

Ah, more of the “it’s okay for blacks to use the n-word” rationalization. Except, Barack is NOT a “white” person. He's half white. You can be half offended by something stupid. Is that okay with you? He is half white and was raised by white people.

IF Barack is as “white” as you want to paint him (forgive the expression), then his “typical white person” comment is even more reprehensible–not less. HE, of all people, should know better, and given his supposed gift for rhetoric, he should also know exactly how to speak by using the right words in the right situation–which is one reason why a number of white people are so offended by the phrasing, coming so soon after he compared his Black PASTOR with his White Grandmother. What he said was true. If you deny it you are just lying to yourself. Most white people are scared of black people they see on the street, especially ones who came from his grandma's generation. It's just true. God forbid we compare a BLACK man to a WHITE woman, right? Listen to Rev. Wright's sermons. They are taken so totally out of context it's sickening. Go listen and you might learn a thing or two. Save being offended by the 4,000+ men and women who have died in Iraq, or how the Bush administration is leading us to hell. Be offended by that, not some silly "gaffe".

  73. andy phx Says:

  75. wmhogg Says:

Thank you, Chris Wallace and Brian Kilmeade. I swear I never thought I would say that.

The funny thing is watching the shocked faces of the other two bobble-heads when Chris Wallace told them that it was a little bit much to spend two hours on Obama-bashing, when there were important news stories to cover.

  76. sicnarfe Says:

This is truly an effed-up country. As a naturalized citizen of 17 years, I have witnessed the gradual slide of a country I have grown to love, into near third-world status. It is worrying that we have been misserved by the so-called media that refuses to inform, but instead sensationalize trivia. They have buried the truth about the important issues affecting the daily lives of all Americans. They treat us like we're some dumb slobs whose opinions must be shaped by their propaganda. As I read the postings, here and elsewhere, it becomes evident to me that the catapulted lies have really hit home in the zombies that comprises part of the audience of these corrupt evil outlets. In addition, the hypnotized zombies then propagate their embellished versions of what the puppet masters have implanted in their noodle-for-brains.
If only we could have a free and truthful media that would examine and inform on the junta. But wait a minute, that's not possible in a fascist regime. Never mind, I think we're screwed.

  77. bbuc Says:

I'd like to think that Chris got a good talking to by his daddy Mike Wallace and has had his Come To Jesus moment. But far more likely, this is a feint on the part of Faux News to prop up some semblance of evenhandedness or "fairness," (if you will). snort.

Maybe if they feather their nest with a little counter views action, it may come in handy when a fair FCC or judge has to evaluate claims against them in the years to come. I can think of all sorts of potential libelous situations they may yet be forced to defend.

  78. Gregor Samsa Says:

He’s half white. You can be half offended by something stupid. Is that okay with you? He is half white and was raised by white people.

IF Barack is as “white” as you want to paint him (forgive the expression), then his “typical white person” comment is even more reprehensible–not less. HE, of all people, should know better, and given his supposed gift for rhetoric, he should also know exactly how to speak by using the right words in the right situation–which is one reason why a number of white people are so offended by dell latitude d410 battery, dell w6617 battery the phrasing, coming so soon after he compared his Black PASTOR with his White Grandmother. No matter how close I might ever feel about my pastor or minister (were I a religious person), the only way that I would ever compare him/her to my BLOOD RELATIVE would be if I’d cut that relative out of my life entirely.

This is another example that the "old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri

If you’re referring to Karl Schwarz’ articles, if they are true, how will we ever know unless the news media gets involved without bias? The military under orders not to speak out may never convey Karl Scharz’ expose’. Sesli Sohbet If Cheney was truly involved in 9/11 and protected in some way, then he’s being protected by what may be going on in the Caspian Sea area as well. That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11). Fx15 From all I’ve read in Schwarz’ articles, he claims the Taliban was working on a deal with Argentina with that pipeline in the Caspian Sea area and UNOCOL wanted the deal instead. Orjinal Lida It’s too much to get into here and I’m not able to convey in here what Schwarz has presented in his articles. Sikis Dig into Schwarz’ articles to learn more about the unnamed soldier’s experiences related to so-called Black Ops missions in the Caspian Sea area in Schwarz’ article. What Schwarz had to present in this article is an eye opener: kurtlar vadisi pusu izle

I think they would say that in terms of deflecting attention away from the issues people really want to hear about, maybe it’s the media doing it, not Barack Obama.
