97% of U.S. deaths in Iraq came after ‘Mission Accomplished.’»

As the U.S. death toll in Iraq reached 4,000 over the weekend, AFP notes a statistic just as sobering:

At least 97 percent of the deaths occurred after US President George W. Bush announced the end of “major combat” in Iraq on May 1, 2003, as the military became caught between a raging anti-American insurgency and brutal sectarian strife unleashed since the toppling of Saddam.

Despite the losses, Bush on the eve of the war’s fifth anniversary defended his decision to invade Iraq, vowing no retreat as he promised American soldiers would triumph despite the “high cost in lives and treasure.”

    Hey Chimpy

If you’re declaring “Mission Accomplished” , isn’t that supposed to be indicative of American soldiers already being triumphant ?

  2. stewarjt Says:

    “Triumph” at what?

  3. hellinabucket Says:

mission was never thought out. They accomplished litte. While the toll is still being tallied.

I would be interested in seeing casualties of soldiers that aren’t being counted as official deaths and the numbers of the injured.

This is the number that should be in our headlines, not just the 4,000 fallen but the tens of thousands that will never be able to walk or see or hold or (fill in the blank) the same way ever again.

There are much more than 4,000 deaths that should be shown to the american public.

  4. christopher wiwi Says:

Only 4000, I bet that number is low balled.I hope DUBYA still has his romantic notions about war. It is time to start Impeachment Proceedings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sick and twisted neocons.

  5. Marie Says:

    “So?” says the Dick Cheney.
The important thing is that gas was 1.50/gal in the US at that time and now it is at 4.00/gal.
The important thing is that Dick’s oil friends have established themselves in the Iraqi oil industry.

And the Chimpya, who took a break from playing with his toy soldiers, is having a grand time on the WH lawn playing with the Easter Bunny.

If any one in the administration had a conscience, they would not be sleeping. But, that is not the case — they are enjoying all temporal pleasures available — we can hope that they suffer for eternity in hell, but I doubt the existence of a hell — so when will these criminals suffer for what they have done?

The 4000 are only “battlefield” deaths. If a soldier survives transport to a hospital to die later, he is not counted as a battlefield casualty. Fact. Same lowlife statistic rigging they did with VietNam is what they are using with Iraq/Afghanistan.

  7. BearCountry Says:

w admits that if he were younger, he would be right there on the front lines in Afgahnistan fighting. The war is romantic and so worthwhile. w was absolutely correct that we were going to get OBL dead or alive, then w decided that he didn’t think much about OBL anymore and we shouldn’t either because it just wasn’t worth it. It just really bothers w that he had to send the nation into war. It bothered him so much that he had to cut taxes for the rich so he could keep funding the war with the increased taxes that the tax cuts brought in. It is wonderful that the dem leadship supports him. I am in awe of the greatness shown in this war or occupation or whatever you choose to call it.

    Wayne Says:

Wow. I didn’t know they tallied deaths in such a way. Not counting deaths outside the designated battlefield.

I’d grimly have to project that there could be 4200+ deaths under a comprehensive count.

What a ignorant, contemptous act against an American soldier.

  10. Tobie Tall Says:

In December the death toll would be about 4500

1/3 (1600) could have been saved if Bush has listened to the recommendations of the Iraq study group and pulled out

Iraqs reconstruction could have been completed by now and the Iraqis would have , electricity , clean water , medicians etc etc etc

If only the deceiver in truth had listened

  11. TheToonGuy Says:

Even now, Bush is hard at work for a new definition of “Triumph,” just like the ones he came up with for “torture” and “recession.”

Wow. I didn’t know they tallied deaths in such a way. Not counting deaths outside the designated battlefield.

There is a soldier’s mother fighting the statistical counting. Her son was hit by a roadside mine, made it to the hospital, survived surgery, was an outpatient for a couple weeks. He complained about constant nosebleeds, the doctors blew it off saying it was normal with the reconstructive surgeryto theface and head. He was found dead in his barracks a couple days later. His mother found out he was not being counted as a casualty, she has filed suit.

This is the same type crap they did during vietnam and this is not the only case.

When is George Bush going to be held accountable for the treasonous act of authorizing the attack on U.S. citizens on 9/11/2001?

You are mentally ill! If that were true your party is just as guilty!!

No democrats went to the UN and lied……
No democrats went to congress and the senate and gave the false information.

This admin did this. This is the bush war. It will always be the bush war. You cannot pin your evil on others.

  19. nanlichi Says:

There are plenty of reasons to despise Chimpfck and his minions without the 9/11 conspiracy crap. The real reasons to hate the bastard are lumped together with this line of “He caused 9/11″ tin hat bs and the whole bundle is discounted. They are culpable because they were fcking incompetent and didn’t take the threats serious.

Isn’t there some other site the 9/11 conspiracy nuts can go to instead of tainting this site?

  20. hellinabucket Says:

    Stick to the thread topic.

The vast majority of combat deaths in Iraq have occured after “mission accomplished”. Where are the staunch republican followers that will stand up next to President Bush and tout the successes?

    Icaredman Says:
So the only reason Bush as not yet been impeached is Dem’s are scared the country would rally around the Neocon’s?
    ——————————–
The only thing I know for sure about the Dems is that they are spineless. There is more than enough evidence to impeach both Bush and Cheney.

Read Greg Palast’s book Armed Madhouse for starters. You might like it, because he takes plenty of shots at the Clintons and Al Gore.

  22. bratboy Says:

“Where are the staunch republican followers that will stand up next to President Bush and tout the successes?”

I could name a few, but McCain, Lieberman come to mind at this second…….Yeah, I know. Lieberman claims to be…..ahem….”independent.” But he’s a republican, no doubt about it.

When he meets his MASTER Satan. For all Bush’s GENOCIDE, TORTURE and WAR CRIMES, guess what his new MASTER will do…

  24. hellinabucket Says:

The Conn. newspaper that supported Lieberman has appoligized.

The soldiers had triumphed a long time ago. It’s the leadership that has failed us all.

  25. DanCaveman Says:

    Hey Vet,

I am extremely frustrated with the Democrats too, but they are our best bet until we can get runoff voting or some other change to the system.

I think there are plenty of good Democrats in congress, but I get the feeling that the leadership is trying to drag out the occupation (as patriots are give life and limb), just to benefit. I think there are many Democrats that are frustrated with Schumer and Pelosi. I just wish more would stand up and fight tooth and nail for the ideals of this country. Too many are being bullied into submission by the Democratic leadership that are more concerned with the future of the party rather than the future of the United States of America.

They forget to realize that there is no Democratic party without a USA.

I truly understand your anger and frustration, but I hope that we can still shape the Democratic party and use it to create a better system where this does not happen again. Where are choices become broader and more diverse. Where you can vote your conscience without worrying about putting George W or McCain in office. We just can’t give up.

There are lots of people counting the dead because of bush’s war. This link says we are not counting nearly all of them.

    http://www.agoracosmopolitan.com/ home/ Frontpage/ 2008/ 03/ 21/ 02286.html

U.S. investigative researchers have discovered an official U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs official, but not well publicized count, of 73,846 U.S. soldiers who have perished as an apparent result of Depleted Uranium based bio-chemical warfare exposure.

Fred, I try to leave clues (in #9), e.g. w starts a sentence, and w had the opportunity to go to war in Viet Nam, but chickened out, because I think that when you explicitly add the word snark, you lose the effect. If I were a real troll, I would write somewhat differently.

  36. williamf Says:

I remember that proud day. Our presidente, standing at the microphone in front of the mission accomplished banner announcing it was a done deal. On a manly carrier deck, having landed himself there just hours before the speech. How touching, how hollywood, how not real! What we learned that day was that the president was a guy who could tell a good stories but for several years he hasn’t gotten the ending to his stories right. No matter, his republican buddies in the congress made sure they sold the snake oil to the people who bought as much of it as they could, and then supported sending our volunteer troops off to the sacrifice. That’s what all good Vice Presidents and Presidents do, our volunteers signed on the dotted line so it doesn’t matter if we misuse them. Send them off on some misbegotten venture and if they die it’s their fault.
