McCain silent on reaching 4,000 U.S. deaths in Iraq.

McCain silent on reaching 4,000 U.S. deaths in Iraq.»

With the deaths of four more soldiers last night, the U.S. military reached the grim marker of 4,000 soldier fatalities in Iraq. Both Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) released statements recognizing the soldiers for their sacrifice and mourning their families’ loss. One campaign, however, has been silent:

One note — John McCain’s office has issued a statement today about elections in Taiwan but nothing about the 4,000.

On his campaign website, McCain calls for “a greater military commitment” and says “more troops are necessary.”

To be fair, I don’t think the US military has confirmed the 4,000 number. It comes from an unofficial tally kept by news services, I believe.

I’m sure once it becomes official, McSame will issue a statement declaring that we have to kill even more young Americans so that those who have died already will not have died in vain.

I think the entire right wing and their noise machine are keeping this 4,000 milestone as quiet as humanly possible.

It’s interesting that I’ve been keeping tabs on FOX News all morning and they have not mentioned the 4,000 dead ONCE - not ONE time. It’s easy to see why from this video though… I mean, they are clearly the best place for information and have no agenda etc.

VIDEO - FOX is full of crap

THIS IS WHAT HE WOULD SAY

“It’s a tough war we’re in. It’s not going to be over right away. There’s going to be other wars.” Offering more of his increasingly bleak “straight talk,” he repeated the claim: “I’m sorry to tell you, there’s going to be other wars. We will never surrender but there will be other wars.”

McCain did not elaborate who the United States would be fighting. But he did warn the crowd to be ready for the ramifications of current and future battles.

“And right now - we’re gonna have a lot of PTSD [post traumatic stress disorder] to treat, my friends,” he said. “We’re gonna have a lot of combat wounds that have to do with these terrible explosive IEDs that inflict such severe wounds. And my friends, it’s gonna be tough, we’re gonna have a lot to do.”

HERES WHAT CHENEY SAID ON 4000 US TROOP DEATHS

Wrapping up a nine-day overseas trip to Iraq, Vice President Dick Cheney was asked, in an exclusive interview with ABC News, about the effect on the nation of today’s grim milestone of at least 4,000 U.S. deaths over the five-year Iraq war.

the Vice President said the biggest burden is carried by President Bush, and reminded ABC news that the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered for duty.

    THE ANSWER IS STOP VOLUNTEERING

  18. hellinabucket Says:

Out of those 1,000 police, how many were forcebly held in their job status? How many didn’t get proper equipment? Not to belittle the fine officers that protect our streets but to make a comparison like this doesn’t show the enormity of the one problem, just that there is more than one great struggle going on.

  19. Merlin Says:

The neocon cabal is being hoisted on its own petard! They need and want this war and so can not in any way admit t5o the “down” side. No mention of the dead, wounded, suffering families, loss of the cream of our country or of the huge PTSD problem that is building even as they remain silent.

That silence, in the face of the reality that Iraq is, is cooking them over a slow fire. The American public has reach a boiling point and there is little time to change course before they rise in justified anger. Revolution is possible folks.

OK, just for the heck of it, let’s pretend for a moment that Cheney’s claim is valid — that Bush really does have a bigger “burden” than those who are getting killed in the line of this insane duty. Didn’t Bush also volunteer? In fact, didn’t he actively campaign for his present job? Why do the sacrifices of our volunteer troops get dissed, but our “overburdened” president does not?

And since we have now established that the ultimate sacrifice of a volunteer soldier (and especially the sacrifices of stop-lossed soldiers, who are no longer volunteers) merely merits the equivalent of a “so what?” from our vice president, young people are less enthused about enlisting than ever. What should we do?

    1) We could reinstate the draft. After all, we are trying to fight a global war on terror, which involves invading all countries any terrorist has been known to come from — EXCEPT those countries who are already providing us with the oil we want. We need a steady supply of human fodder to take care of all these invasions, occupations, and regime changes. And the only downside is that a draft will convert couch potatoes into anti-war activists in a way that will make Vietnam War protests look tame.

    2) We can continue to trash the economy. Keep unemployment high, and keep busting the budgets of the middle class. Young people will HAVE to sign up for the military because they’ll be broke and jobless otherwise. And the only downside is that a bad economy may come to bite us in the butt come this November. However, we may be able to take care of this by blaming the poor economy on the Democrat(sic)-controlled Congress.

Hmmm — which of these options will the GOP most likely embrace?

  27. Art Says:

McCain calls for “a greater military commitment” and says “more troops are necessary.”

We gave you 4,000 more than you have now. What did you do with them?

  28. mary Says:

    Cheney on the 4,000 dead:

    “So? They volunteered.”

It always makes me sad to read a soldier’s obituary, especially when it says the soldier joined after 9/11. Cheney and his evil cohorts took advantage of 9/11 for all it was worth.

McCain seems to be intent on following in Cheney’s footsteps.

Obama said on Monday he reacted “with great sadness” to the news that “we have reached another grim milestone in Iraq, with at least 4,000 of our finest Americans having been killed”.

“It is past time to end this war that should never have been waged by bringing our troops home, and finally pushing Iraq’s leaders to take responsibility for their future,” he said.

  32. Marie Says:

The Dick Cheney had this to say about the 4000 deaths:

“the biggest burden is carried by President George W. Bush, who made the decision to commit US troops to war, and reminded the public that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered for duty.”

This was said in an interview with Martha Raddatz of ABC - so it may be part of the extended interview where his comment about polls indicating the public was weary of the war and want it over: “So?”

It’s weird, all right. Did this author think up this insane idea all by himself, or is this a Clinton plant? (I doubt it’s an Obama plant — he’s ahead in this race).

There isn’t a whole lot of love lost between Clinton and Obama, and Clinton is the only one who has even hinted that they could work together (and that was just a tease to get votes away from Obama).

    This bizarre arrangement is about as weird as a Ford-Reagan co-presidency in 1976, a Bush-McCain co-presidency in 2000 (or a Gore-Bradley one), or a Clinton-Tsongas co-presidency in 1992.

McCain silent on reaching 4,000 U.S. deaths in Iraq.
Because even he knows this IS ONE F-ed UP LIE
It is true we have lost 4,000 men ON IRAQ SOIL.
But this number reported by the DOD does not reflect the 8 times as many that have died en route tot he hospital or after arriving at the hospital. The DOD count never goes up unless a death is reported on Iraqi soil.
AND the news media which is invested in the MIC is now comparing the so called low number of deaths to that in Vietnam, insinuating maybe things are not that bad …the 58,000 death number INCLUDED those that died after arriving to the hospital.
How dare the mic invested media exploit and lie over the facts of our US casualties.
