ThinkFast: March 24, 2008

foodgroc3.jpg

According to Merrill Lynch, at the end of 2007, “36 percent of consumers’ disposable income went to food, energy and medical care, a bigger chunk of income than at any time since records were first kept in 1960.”

Health-care costs are “whacking away” at the wages of working class Americans. Premiums for family health coverage have increased 78 percent since 2001. “Even though workers are producing more, inflation-adjusted median family income has dipped 2.6 percent — or nearly $1,000 annually since 2000.”

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has consistently “condemned the influence of ’special interest lobbyists.’” Yet of “the 66 current or former lobbyists working for the Arizona senator or raising money for his presidential campaign, 23 have lobbied for telecommunications companies in the past decade.” McCain has received $765,000 in donations from these individuals and their spouses, co-workers, and clients.

“[E]vidence from nonprofit credit and mortgage counselors suggests that the number of people using these so-called ‘pay day loans’ is growing…a negative sign for economic recovery.” A pay day loan “is typically for a few hundred dollars, with a term of two weeks, and an interest rate as high as 800 percent.”

“Bipartisan support is mounting for the Justice Department to investigate the unauthorized searches of all three presidential candidate’s passport files by a State Department employee and three contracted workers in recent months.”

In addition to U.S. troop deaths reaching 4,000 in Iraq, “American forces have just experienced the most violent two-week period in Iraq since September 2007.” Between March 10 and 23, twenty-five soldiers were killed in Iraq.

The average price of gasoline has hit a record $3.26 a gallon, with diesel at a record $4.06. The average coast of gasoline jumped nearly 7 cents from two weeks earlier.

Young Army and Marine captains “have extensive combat experience and are regarded as the military’s future leaders.” But “the hardships of repeated tours are taking their toll,” sending these individuals back to “civilian life.” Capt. Kirkner Bailey of the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment in Mosul said that “8 of my 10 friends who are captains are leaving the army.”

In talks Sunday night, JPMorgan Chase discussed offering Bear Stearns $10 a share, instead of its initial offering of $2, “in an effort to pacify angry Bear shareholders.” The New York Times reported that the Fed “was balking at the new offer price,” making it “possible” that the new deal could “collapse entirely.”

And finally: Since former New York state governor Eliot Spitzer’s “tête-à-tête with a call girl at the famous Mayflower Hotel,” business has been booming. The hotel’s gift shop “has been booming with people picking up Mayflower coffee mugs and post cards” and the venue’s bar “is busier than normal.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Winter Soldiers Gathering Censored by Corporate Media

SILVER SPRING, Maryland – Hundreds of veterans who gathered outside Washington last weekend to testify about their experiences in Iraq are returning to their communities...with the goal of stoking resistance to the Iraq war from inside the U.S. military.

…“We have the power to bring the troops home, when they throw down their weapons and refuse to fight,” said Phil Aliff, a recently discharged combat veteran…“When you’re in the military, you are a citizen soldier,” Rappenhagen said. “You still retain your rights as a citizen and you’re able to use those rights.”

The gathering was timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and was held less than 10 miles from the White House. However, the personal testimonies of hundreds of Iraq veterans garnered only a small article in the metro section of the Washington Post. The New York Times¸ CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS ignored it completely.

Proving that market manipulation has to do with the rise in costs, not the fundamentals of supply and demand. It’s been a real boon in the form of quarterly giant gift baskets to executives and managers meeting the bottom line of denying care and canceling policies. If you’re not putting in(premiums, deductibles, co-pays) more than you’re getting out of this rigged game, to them you’re not worthy of coverage.

How dare they continue to call their product “insurance”. I’m sick of this illusion that the patient comes first.

I’m sure all of you remember “Harry & Louise”. Well, everything that the Health Companies said the government run health care system would do, they have done. Plus the cost for health care has tripled or more. In the meantime reimbursements to doctors and hospitals are down. What does that tell you? Profits for the health care industry have risen dramatically.

It’s time for a single-payer health care system. The Health Care industry has ripped us off long enough. It’s time to end their gravy train.

And I remember back during the gas crunch of the 1970’s, people started buying cars with diesel engines because the price of diesel was considerably less than gasoline.

The price of diesel is now soaring over the price of gasoline, and most private citizens aren’t even paying attention because of the focus on the gas price tag (which is probably why diesel is so much more — it goes up to keep gas down). Yet it’s the trains and trucks running on diesel that move our groceries and other goods to market, and transportation costs are driving the price of everything up.

    A Growing Movement

Nonetheless, the United States is on the verge of a renaissance of community gardening and urban farming, with some careful cultivation. Local governments need to take the lead in recognizing the potential of gardening to help address many of the physical, social, and economic ills affecting their neighborhoods. But local governments won’t be able to do it all. Private foundations must increase funding for gardens, and federal programs will need to be expanded and reoriented in support of gardening. But most importantly, of course, is the ongoing commitment of millions of gardeners, ablaze with the desire to gain the power and dignity of growing their own food.

Will Wall St. donations sway candidates?
Some Democrats fear undue influence by financial industry

By Janet Hook and Dan Morain
    March 23, 2008

WASHINGTON – Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, who have run for president as economic populists, are benefiting handsomely from Wall Street donations, easily surpassing Republican John McCain in campaign contributions from the troubled financial services sector.

It is part of a broader fundraising shift toward Democrats, compared to past campaigns when Republicans were the favorites of Wall Street. But some Democrats worry that the influx of money will make their candidates less willing to call for reforms to increase regulation of financial markets, which have been in turmoil following a wave of foreclosures on subprime mortgages.

These concerned Democrats argue that their candidates, and McCain, should be willing to push hard for financial institutions to accept more government regulation – in exchange for likely future bailouts, such as the recent deal the Federal Reserve orchestrated for JPMorgan Chase & Co. to take over Bear Stearns.

“I want to hear Clinton, Obama and McCain talk about a quid pro quo,” says Jared Bernstein, an economist with the Democratic-leaning Economic Policy Institute. “If we don’t hear it, especially from Democrats, it makes sense to ask why not and ask if they are inappropriately cozy with the financial services industry.”

The endless list of genetically modified seeds sold and controlled by Monsanto are putting at enormous risk age-old agricultural patterns under the presumptuous slogan of aiming at solving the huge problem of hunger in the world.

On March 11 a new documentary was aired on French television (ARTE – French-German cultural tv channel) by French journalist and film maker Marie-Monique Robin, entitled ‘The World According to Monsanto’ (Le Monde selon Monsanto[1]). Starting from the Internet over a period of three years Robin has collected material for her documentary, going on to numerous interviews with people of very different backgrounds. She traveled widely, from Latin America, to Asia, through Europe and the United States, to personally interview farmers and people in influential positions.

This is my spring break and I get to sleep in all week! I am on the left coast so it just looks like it is later than it is. Anyway, it is not just fuel that is affecting our food costs. Our good friends have offered us a piece of their garden if we can help with it. I really think that the food situation is going to be devastating for the global population and economy.

Biggest military power and formed specifically to oppose us. At some point, they will consider us a rabid dog that must be taken out for everyone’s safety. And our own military will be too broken to put up much of a fight. Thanks, Bushco.

They won’t have “to take us out” militarily, misshusseinmolly. All they’ll have to do is call their markers and they’ll own the place.

We’ll all be “Under New Managment”…

That blithering idiot in the WH may have broken the place in just 8 short… er, make that, 8 of the longest years I’ve ever lived thru.

The New York Times reported that the Fed “was balking at the new offer price,” making it “possible” that the new deal could “collapse entirely.”

Ok, I’m confused. Why would the feds want JPMorgan Chase to offer Bear Stearns $2 a share rather than $10 a share? That would have been a great help to all the Bear Sterns employees who were stuck with worthless Bear Stearns stock.

Or the feds don’t want to be responsible for that much money if things go belly up? If the feds promised JPMorgan Chase they’d cover any losses, then JPMC figures why not up the ante, if Sterns and Bear flops it’t the tax payers who suffer, not them.

Tonight and tomorrow night on PBS. Can’t wait – need to set the recorder for this one. I think, though, I probably need to put something in front of the TV to protect it from things that might get thrown at it. I have tried posting this 2 times already and it keeps getting held for moderation. I cut out some of the text from the press release and will try again!

It’s time for a single-payer hp nc6200 battery,hp nc6400 battery health care system. The Health Care industry has ripped us off long enough. It’s time to end their gravy train.
