Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has long held that he was the “greatest critic” of Donald Rumsfeld’s strategy in Iraq. Now, as he moves into the general election, he is also trying to distance himself from the unpopular president.
When asked yesterday how he is offering a different path forward in Iraq than Bush, McCain dodged the question, instead saying he had “no confidence” in Bush until the President implemented the surge in 2007:
I’m offering them the record of having objected strenuously to a failed strategy for nearly four years. That I argued against and fought against and said that the secretary of defense of my own party, and my own president, I had no confidence in. That’s how far I went in advocating the new strategy that is succeeding.
McCain’s statement stretches the truth. As late as August 2006, McCain declared that he did have “confidence” in Bush’s leadership in Iraq:
Q: Do you, do you have confidence in the president and his national security team to lead the war at this stage?
McCAIN: I do. I do. I have confidence in the President and I believe that he is well aware of the severity of the situation. [Meet The Press, 8/20/06]
McCain told reporters yesterday he “objected strenuously to a failed strategy for nearly four years.” If this were the case, why would he also praise Bush’s “stay the course” message over that time?
– “I was heartened to hear the President say that we cannot cut and run in Iraq.” [Press Release, 11/5/03]
– “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” [ABC News, 3/7/04]
– “And what the president did tonight is the most important thing. He laid out an articulate vision for victory in Iraq and why we need to stay the course.” [Fox, 6/28/05]
McCain can try as much as he wants to distance himself from Bush on Iraq, but as the President observed just weeks ago, “he’s not going to change when it comes to taking on the enemy.”

I know this is off the subject, but above is a CNN article about Debbie Shank. I am a conservative, but I do have compassion. I do not shop at Walmart, and do understand that they have legal specifications to recall her healthcare funding, but, morally, somebody should help her and her family. Her son will not be able to go to college because of her medical issue. Her husband had to divorce her so she would receive more funding from her medicaid plan while tending to his prostate cancer. Her first son was killed in Iraq. I am looking for a site or someway to send a substantial amount to this family, and I think that you all should do the same. You claim that I am a fundamentalist full of air, and that I never give, but this is a seriously sad situation. Put your money where your mouth is. If you love Jesus, you would take care of the sick and those that do not have the financial means to take care of themselves. I will be posting more information on how to send her money.

If universities and colleges are wondering, lately, why they are not able to fill their classrooms, this is a good reason.
March 25th, 2008 at 4:48 pmIt’s his memory that he has a problem with. Can’t blame Grampa McCain for lying. It’s been working for 7 years why change a prove formular. Americans don’t want to hear the truth only the lies and propaganda plus what’s Paris and Britney up to. Now as for the US debt well you notice Americans are just waiting for the hand out of those rebate checks. Next there will be lines for cheese and powered milk and we go into a US depression. Those old days had black/white pictures now we will see the same thing in color pictures. Who knows Iraq might have a hand out to the United States in the depression.

March 25th, 2008 at 4:51 pmOne of two things going on here. Either (1) McOldGuy saw a completely unqualified drunken frat boy installed as Prezwit and then re(sort of)elected and decided the American people are too ignorant or disinterested to notice the duplicity and outright lies; or (2) McOldGuy himself cannot remember what he said yesterday let alone four years ago and is making it up as he goes. Option one demonstrates loss of respect for the voters. Option two demonstrates loss of cognitive function. Either meets the criteria for the Republican nominee.

This woman obviously qualifies for disability where she gets Medicare. With that kind of money sitting in her account she definitely doesn’t qualify for Medicaid so something is fishy about this article. I think it’s a mistake to wait. McCain is out there running already, creating the illusion of strength and competency in the mind of “independent” voters. The longer the Democrats wait to bust him on it, the more difficult it will be to crack the façade. Exactly, but the person who needs to call him on it is Obama… I had no dog in the Obama/Clinton fight but at this point I would argue that Obama needs to:
March 25th, 2008 at 6:19 pmA: stop responding to “Rev. Wright” attacks- just say, “At first I wasn’t black enough and now I’m a black racist? It’s laughably absurd.” ’cause it is…

B: stop worring about Hillary and focus on McCain. Obama should start his general election campaign now… The best way to win this primary fight is by taking the fight to the Republicans…

Ok, now I’m back on this side of the argument. As long as the press plays along with the “moderate” and “maverick” persona that McCain wants to project to some voters, he will still poll well in National polls. And that has a way of solidifying the thinking of those who don’t really want to do their homework for themselves. So, I think we need to start now. I wonder why the Democratic party is holding back? It’s not like they don’t have the money. Maybe we can get MoveOn.org to start a campaign.

I agree with this strategy. By going after McCain instead of Hillary, Obama will be trivializing Hillary and it will make her crazy. Not that she’s not already crazy. But Barak has, for all intents and purposes won the nomination, so he should start on McCain now. He has done it in recent speeches like when he addressed McCain’s Iran/AQ “misspeaks”.
March 25th, 2008 at 6:24 pmAfter the Bush camp slimed him, there is septugenarian Johnny McCain walkin shoulder to shoulder with W., what a crock of shite! I hope he gives conservatives the finger after/if he gets elected, just like he has so far…
March 25th, 2008 at 6:47 pmStrategeristically-inclined thinkers should be worried that McCain is going to win on the premise that “he’s practically a Democrat anyway” (yes, i know, completely false).
March 25th, 2008 at 7:39 pmhere’s how:
The hard right feigns outrage over his “liberal tendencies”.
then,
The press reifies the hard-right message, and continues the hero-handjob it’s been contributing.
ultimately,
A bunch of “independent/swing/moderate” voters will fall for the press, and accept the hard right message as validation of Mc’s “liberalism”, and avoid the “terribly risky” option of letting gasp! a woman or a black guy or worst of all “a liberal” win.
and
When D’s do finally get around to drawing a bead on McMaverick, the press will instantly shame them for attacking the kindly old HeroW, and remind everyone endlessly that he once or twice co-sponsored legislation with a D, which makes him “the most liberal R candidate for president ever”.
because
If hardcore Righties and Lefties all stay home 11/2, the squishy white center of the electorate will go exactly where they tell it to.
How does McCain explain his votes in the Senate then? He has voted for every single proposal Bush has put forward on Iraq and intelligence gathering, even supporting torture by CIA agents. When McCain hasn’t been one of Bush’s top cheerleaders in the Senate the criticism has been oblique at best (meaning criticism that could very easily be deflected, as indeed it was at every turn). It has come to the point where if McCain is moving his lips he is lying. We have had more than enough of that already. Replacing a stubborn idiot with a stubborn old fool won’t get the job done. Yes, that is you I am talking about John McCain; a stubborn old fool.

NO. Did he support any bills to impeach? NO. He acted like a DUMB-ocrat and let the travisty continue. (Yes, I know, he’s one of those other ones.) Just like Billary acting like a Republi-CON (and yes, I know she’s one of the Dumbies.), to get more blood for votes for this election. And let’s face it, with the use of illegal wiretaps and those ‘non-torturous’ waterboarding techniques, an impeachment of every member of this administration, former and current, could be tried within a week, with convictions by Friday. So, will either Senator promise to sign the war crimes treaty and pursue treason charges against Cheney and friends, if elected? My fingers are crossed.

What McSpeak meant was:
“I was against the surge before I was for it.”
“I was against torture before I was for it.”
I was against lobbyist ties, after I was for them, but now I’m for them again.”

March 26th, 2008 at 12:39 am>YOU TALK ABOUT COMPASSION, PROVE IT!!!!!
I DID. I HAD SEX WITH YOUR WIFE FOR FREE.
p.s. YOUR WIFE IS A WHORE, DARYLL
March 26th, 2008 at 3:01 amIt doesn’t matter what comes out of his mouth, he is bound to be our next commander in chief. I just heard of a new poll saying 48% of Mrs. Billary crew will vote for him instead of the democratic party’s alternative. I feel for our young generation. I saw this today and thought it hit the nail on the head…“People who think like this are stuck in a time capsule, When kids know more than their parents, the parents lose control. I think that is a fear in all of us.”
March 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pmBTW that little quote at the end had nothing to do with the election it was referring to religion and education.
March 26th, 2008 at 1:18 pmYou people are true idiots. Barrack is a socialist and a racist. Hillary changes her answers with every new poll and you idiots are going to vote for one or the other. Unless you vote for the best Democrat left. John McCain.
Good luck suckers
