McCain’s secret weapon: maps by ‘Karl Rove & Co.’

During a public conversation in Texas last night with former Bush pollster Matthew Dowd, Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) media adviser, Mark Mckinnon, displayed “maps of the states broken down by electoral votes” that gamed McCain’s chances in November. According to Texas Monthly’s Evan Smith, “the printed header on both” maps “read ‘Karl Rove & Co.’” Rove has previously been reported to be “informally advising” McCain’s campaign. During the chat, McKinnon also revealed that “McCain would be happy to have Bush campaign with him in the fall” and “that he had no intention of running from Bush.”

Careful Johnny. I understand Karl has a little trouble with "the real numbers" these days.

The horseshit GOP must have grabbed the wrong "maps" during the '06 election..........

  5. PollM Says:

We've been doing this for the last 100 years and now McCain want's us to do it for the next 100 years.

"We cannot build an enduring peace based on freedom by ourselves,"

Do you believe McCain's Foreign Policy speech to be Idealism or Realism?

Are KKKarl's maps based on his "math"?

How can McCain morally have the same man who accused him of having an out of wedlock "bastard" black child?

  8. A Patriot Acting Says:

McLame's gonna need that map to find his way out of Bush's ass!

  9. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

McBush will suffer from the same Karl Rove math that the Republican party suffered in the 2006 election.

Now, now there, you are making the mistake of assuming that McBush has morals. Unfortunately he threw them out the window when he decided he would sell his soul to be President.

That one fact alone is enough for me to never be able to vote for McBush. Anyone who could forgive the kind of slime they threw at him during the 2000 election certainly lacks a moral compass.

  12. tombaker Says:

They're having some fundraising trouble, so they just bought the '04 maps at Karl's garage sale. McCain sat through the session without noticing.

    from the link:
'14. McKinnon said he thought it would take just one international incident, one act of terrorism or other security crisis, to get the public to ask itself which candidate is best positioned to lead the nation in these perilous times -- and of course they would pick McCain. Dowd countered that the public might feel that way for three or four days, but then they'd ask, "Wait a minute. We were supposed to be safer because of the war. Why did we spend all this money, and why did we sacrifice 4,000 lives, if we're not safer after all?" And they, Dowd intimated, would look hard at supporting the Democrat as an alternative.'

I certainly hope Dowd is right!

The best support McCain is getting now is from another president called Bill and his wife candidate Hillary...they both praised McCain in numerous occasions...so who needs Bush..?!

Get serious, Keltoi. How many Romney or Huckabee backers during the primary said they would vote for Hillary before McCain?

How many of them are lining up behind the GOP candidate like good little soldiers now?

  19. hellinabucket Says:

fiscal responsibility? the republicans have failed here.

smaller govt.? Largest expansion of govt. since WWII so strike two.

Less intrusive? warrantless wiretapping, Terry Schiavo, Patriot act.

The republicans haven't been true to themselves for the last 7 years so how can anyone believe they will be true to the american people?

    $500,000. $30,000,000. $720,000,000.

That's how much we're spending on the Iraq war every minute, every hour, and every day. And most republicans will tell you that the war is not tied to the economy at all.

Well, that is the thing, Ralph, Repubs are good little soldiers. They fall in line much quicker than the Dems.

Hillary is radioactive to the Rs - she would motivate the R base more than McCain ever could. And sadly, Obama's Preachergate has totally alienated LOTS of independents.

Hey, maybe I am wrong and if it turns out that way I'll say so. But the victory lap many at TP are running because there is just no way the Republicans can win is very premature.

No, Keltoi, the point is that before the Repub nom was settled, you had backers of each candidate saying the exact same thing about McCain that the poll you cite says about Democrats.

Same situation; unsettled nomination, bravado talk from rank-and-file that spelled disaster.

Maybe Republicans ARE better "little soldiers" than Democrats. But Democrats have a hell of a lot more motivation to vote the party line than in an typical election.

Almost any declaration about this year's election is "very premature", including your speculation that "this could go down to the wire" based on a predictable poll. What is clear is that Democratic turnout in the primaries is dwarfing Republican turnout, voters registering as Democrats is increasing and as Republicans is dropping, and pretty much all long-term trends that generally affect elections (economy, war, popularity of sitting president) seem to favor Democratic fortunes.

“McCain would be happy to have Bush campaign with him in the fall”

Yeah, talk is cheap in the early spring. Let's see McCain actually campaignj alongside Chimpy in the fall.

    I dare him. I double-dare him.

The danger here is that all the hardcore R's do stay home, but enough I's show up to elect McMaverick. There are only about 10 hardcore R's left, so Con's inside the McMav campaign know they would be better off courting I's and DINO's, misogynists and anti-misceginationists. Hardcore Righties like Rush and the Ditto League will serve as a convenient foil to that end, and dim-witted, self-branded I's will think they're taking a bold stand by voting for the "Liberal" McMaverick.

This should be screamed from the Mountain tops. The republicans will come out on election day to vote AGAINST HILLARY.

And sadly, Obama’s Preachergate has totally alienated LOTS of independents.

I call BS on this. The stupid Wright non-controversy will be down the memory hole in 2 weeks. The only reason this story has any traction is that pundits are lazzzzy and this 'scandal' comes equipped with a you tube clip

  29. Pseudonym Says:

The Republicans suck at governing and serving the American people, but they are great at winning elections. When will the Democrats/pogressives effectively organize to win this thing? What do they have to counteract Rove's tactics? What will they do to match the moves Freedom's Watch has planned for later this year? Will they be caught unawares of this season's "swiftboating"? Will they not have a swiftboat move of their own?

McCain is coasting on the false impression of "competence" and "credibility" buttressed by the media and the Democrats have no mechanism to destroy this falacy. Move On and the DNC have to stop preaching to the converted and insist the truth be told in any way possible.

You mean the "liberal media" isn't challenging the conventional wisdom on McCain? Who woulda thunk it?

  31. Gregor Samsa Says:

Well, if these maps were crafted using Rove's The Math, I suppose the Democratic candidate (whoever that might turn out to be) will have little to worry about.
