Rice considering VP run?

Rice considering VP run?»

Steve Clemons reports that this morning, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice attended Grover Norquist’s weekly conservative “powerhouse gathering” at Americans for Tax Reform. Although Rice denied running for office was part of her “political future,” one GOP operative was skeptical, noting that the only reason high-ranking officials go to the right-wing meeting is to “secure” their political positions:

Someone like Condi Rice doesn’t go to Grover Norquist’s den to talk about the Annapolis Middle East peace process. She’s going to secure her future in Republican politics and to position herself as a ‘potential’ VP candidate on the McCain ticket.

    “Rice considering VP run?”

Now that would be a disaster given the fact that Girlfriday couldn’t do both jobs as National Security Adviser and Secretary of State.

Good…another link to a massively failed policy. I can’t see this as being good, so let her do it.

Want more of the McSame? Rice as VP locks that one up.

  4. po Says:

Oh, yeah, baby. Bring it on. Tweedle dee and tweedle dumb run for the WH. She is the most incompetent national security advisor and Secretary of State this nation has had in a long time. Pathetic, if this is the best the GOP can do

  5. Badmoodman Says:

McCain - Rice? The most mismatched notion since tasty and tofu were in the same sentence.

Oscar and Felx were better matched.

  6. hellinabucket Says:

Ms. Rice will be subjected to the same questions that both Obama and Clinton are facing with the added “Why aren’t you married?”

How is the Family Values crowd going to cozy up to a single VP? If it’s fair game from the republicans to ask how one feels about McCain if it were known he’s raising a bastard child I’m sure there won’t be a problem asking about the sexual preferences of the potential VP.

Well, if McCain put her on the ticket he would get a toofer. A black and a woman. I doubt it would help his candidacy a whole lot. She’s almost more toxic than he is.

They would put aside their bigotry and sexism if they thought it would enhance their chances of winning the white house. But they are going to have to find a much better candidate than Condi. I doubt that any blacks would be encouraged to vote for McCain with her on the ticket and most women despise Condi. Then McCain would have to deal with all the bigoted and sexist voters in the Republican party.

I wouldn’t mind Condi on the ticket at all. She would further drag McBush down and embarrass the Republican party the way McBush is embarrassing them now.

  24. 5th Estate Says:

    a vapid update from Clemons:

“I won’t go into more of what she said in the meeting — but can say that she gave a tour de force discussion of America’s global foreign policy and national security positions.”
“And by all accounts I have heard, her performance was stunningly good, very well received by one of the major bastions of American conservative power players, and that she “won them over,” according to one source.”

First of all, all this global foreign policy talk was for the benefit of Americans for Tax Reform whose primary goal is to establish ‘taxation without representation’ for the majority, and ‘no taxation with maximum representation’ for the richest 1% (and their buddies who can make that happen).
So what does foreign policy and national security have to do with that? (Unless of course there’s some kind of business profit tax angle to US foreign policy and national security policies which..ummm, there undoubtedly is).

Second of all Rice’s ability to “win over” anyone in that crowd is an accomplishment equivalent to earning your mother’s praise for voluntarily washing the dishes for once.

Third of all, if Rice is such a brilliant policy wonk, how come she has achieved exactly zip nada nothing zero bubkus as Sec. State (and of course she though the biggest threat to the US at 7am on September 11, 2001 was a possible nuclear strike from Russia).

Finally, I know Clemons isn’t a right-winger or even a libertarian, but his frequent breathless regurgitation of anonymously sourced scuttlebut mixed with credulous conjecture suggest to me that he’s trying to be a lefty Matt Drudge.

  25. Chris L Says:

The dems couldn’t be so lucky. When even the majority of republicans are turning from Bush, to choose someone from his administration? That would be political suicide for McCain.

  26. Willy Says:

I think it would be a great fit for Rice to be VP. She currently does nothing as Secretary of State, so she would be able to continue doing nothing as Vice President, since VP’s traditionally (except for Darth Cheney) do little or nothing.

  27. mongo Says:

#15–They would put aside their bigotry and sexism if they thought it would enhance their chances of winning the white house.

    Absolutely ridiculous.

It’s precisely these base behaviors that the republics rely on in order to drive out their base to vote against their rational best interests. You don’t want mcshame to beat bush in the primaries? Spread the misinformation that mcshame fathered an illegitimate black baby.

That’s the republic party modus operandi: highlight those aspects of the enemy (democrats) that you know will cause the greatest emotional reaction in your base–appeal to their racism, sexism, homophobia. Straight out of the rove playbook.

  28. 5th Estate Says:

Ah..but Willy…haven’t you noticed that tradition is so 20th century? The new paradigm is that the President does nothing and the VP exercises executive power.

    I say-

Why would I brag at about the GOP at this point? Nothing to brag about. I was just making an observation MC. At this point, I don’t see anything helping either party right now. The political flow of this election is hard to understand. We are in new territory with a woman senator and a black senator on one side, and an old senator on the other. The GOP has already locked in their candidate and the democrats are still fighting to win theirs. Throwing Condis name around right now is a political tool Mc Cain can use since the democrats are still infighting for their candidate. Condi will never be seriously considered because of what she has been incapable of doing in Iraq.

Throwing Condi’s name around would be a HUGE DETRIMENT to McStupid , SM ; she has proven to be tremendously incompetent and falsely built up .

McStupid is going to have a hell of a time trying to convince woters in this country on his laughable assessment that staying in Iraq (much less for a century) , is a “good thing” , let alone bandying about an incompetent Chimpy administration official’s name as anything other than the butt end of a joke……………..Never mind his grasp on the US economy is about as fluid as Chimpy’s speech pattern.

  34. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Sounds like that “GOP operative” was having a wet dream. Let’s not forget that Rice was appointed by Bush, and has never held an elected office. A NSC advisor who, somehow, completely misinterpreted the August 6, 2001 PDB regarding OBL’s intention to hit the US…possibly with airliners? I will NEVER forget her explanation before the 911 Commission that she saw it as some kind of “historical” comparison. WHAT?!?!? I think it was her own mentor, Brent Scocroft, who said she was the worse NSC advisor ever and way in over her head. And I’m still trying to figure out what she’s supposed to have done successfully as Sec. of State. Anyone?

It is hard to fathom that the Republicans would think that pairing the world’s last Spanish American war vet with a stammering, deer-in-the-headlights lightweight who openly worships the current failure in chief is a good idea. These stories linking Rice to higher office paired with her denial pop up like clockwork. Not sure if she plants them or if the novelty of a black female Republican causes the miniscule brains of the Washington press to spin. I wouldn’t read anything into this one.

Well I think that all three of them are terrible speakers (McCain is boring and completely predictable, Bush can’t speak English and has that horrible way of chuckling at inappropriate times) but when Condi speaks it’s as though each word has to be pulled out of her throat against its wishes! Plus, she lies constantly (not unlike the other two awful speakers you mentioned).

Her speaking style is halting (to the max), unnatural and very uncomfortable to listen to.

  38. mary Says:

Now that I think of it - Condi’s speaking style is probably that way BECAUSE she’s lying.

Rice? Nah, they’ll probably just go with Cheney as VP again. You know, because his ideas were all so successful his first two terms.

  42. regular_joe Says:

Having failed miserably as “National Security Advisor” and “Secretary of State,” Condi decided she’d like to try her hand at being “Vice President”. After seven LONG years of watching both Bush and Cheney dodge accountability for consistent failure, she rightly figured that there’s nothing to either job. The only skill you really need is a keen ability to CYA.

In the Bush administration, the only prerequisites to be president or vice president is that one must be arrogant, ignorant and exceedingly evil. In Bush World, with respect to these metrics, I’d say Condi was over qualified for either job.

It’s just that your views as expressed are so outlandish and your grammar so fractured that it struck me as a parody of an extreme, shallow-thinking right-winger.

I have a 22 year old daughter who does not have health care because she cannot afford it. BUT at least she doesn’t do like other girls her age and get pregnant just so she can have welfare. She doesn’t have the time, shoes are on display somewhere in the world and she has to expend taxpayer monies to go see he latest styles. I wish somone would map her trips to the fashion world’s openings/shows. I bet you they coexist.

    Ms. Condalezza Marcos

  84. Alecto Says:

    Woodguy,
You cannot even post a sinlge cohesive post in one post and you rely on others to do it for you, “Please include this in post @ 85 above.” and yet you have the balls to say:
“I just don’t believe that the government has the responsibility or the right to take care of you people, or me for that matter.”

You would die from your own stupidty with minutesupon awakening if it were not Government regulations and constructs that PROTECTED you against yourself. Go back to crazy town please, and give Karl a kick in the nuts for us while you are there.

  85. Alecto Says:

    Any meeting that is called:

    “powerhouse gathering”

    Isn’t.

  86. Doc Rock Says:

What a combo that would be! The ticket would be really empowered by adding the “worst” National Security Advisor and the “worst” Secretary of State ever as a running mate. Bring it on!

  87. misshusseinmolly Says:

On the other hand, Rice would be a far cry from Cheney. Instead of running the country by running the president (as Cheney has done), she would simply sit as the president’s ultimate sycophant, as she has done with Bush. And instead of amassing power for herself, she would simply wait to be told what to do. Being somebody else’s wind-up doll has been her biggest talent.

Only problem — McCain is getting older, and it’s a possibility that he may not survive four years in office. What would Condi do if she actually had to stand on her own?

  88. tokin librul Says:

McStain naming Rice or even Colon Powell would be brilliant tactically, since it would steal all–or in any case really diminish–the thunder of the Dims’ circus candidacies. With the big “advantage” of having a stern, father-figure, WHITE male at the top of the ticket to appeal to and assuage Mid-Dull Murkans’ fears and insecurities…

  89. squidbilly Says:

    The Dumb and Dumber ticket…

  90. lthuedk Says:

Rice is an extraordinary liar, suitable for any junta, far right or left. Her dead mentors, Leo Strauss and Irving Kristol, along with the “heroes” of the W.H.I.G. would excitedly approve.

So would Hitler, Lenin, and Marx.
