On Sunday, President Bush will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Nationals Park, the new home of the Washington Nationals. The player likely to catch Bush’s pitch is Nationals starting catcher Paul Lo Duca, who was mentioned 37 times in the Mitchell Report on substance-enhancing drugs. Bush has repeatedly denounced the use of steroids. On Windows on Washington, Ken Herman writes:
So here’s the potential opening-night visual: The president who is concerned about substance abuse in baseball winds up and throws the ceremonial pitch to a catcher linked to substance abuse. It’s all smiles and happiness as president and catcher pose for the post-pitch photo.
In 2006, Vice President Cheney was loudly booed when he threw out the first pitch for the Nationals. In a rare move for a president, Bush missed the team’s home openers in both 2006 and 2007.
Does it really matter..there both crooks and liers.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:04 am“…Bush winds up and delivers…
March 26th, 2008 at 11:07 amLow and outside…….. it’s a dirt ball…”
I only pray that Bush takes a grenade and drop it in his shorts on that day.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:07 amThat’s where Bush is best suited – towel boy in the locker room.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:07 amPark security should detain Bush like they do naked field runners and have him turned over to the appropriate international authorities.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:09 amWill Bush pitch to a substance abuser?
YES
Pitch hitting for Atrios, this has been another episode of simple answers to simple questions.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:09 amSports and our attitude about it…ei win at any cost is a direct reflection of our society……it will be our downfall as it has for societies in the past.
The main function of public schools now is to provide atheletes for they system……more money spent on stadiums, gymnasiums, weight rooms, travel, etc. than any kind of educational endevor. Schools are not about education anymore.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:10 amThey should have a fan appreciation day where WE can pitch balls at HIM.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:12 amwell from one substance user to another…
March 26th, 2008 at 11:12 amcan we throw rotten eggs at the traitor/war criminal bush?
too bad the game is not in vermont…. when his sorry ass will be arrested on site.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:13 amthere is so much going on in this world that is ever so much more important than whether george w. bush pitches to lo duca… ferchrissake, open your eyes… there’s a big world out there… having just traversed half the world from south america to afghanistan where i am a first-time visitor, i can tell you, from this perspective, opening up think progress and reading a “story” like this would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic…
And, yes, I DO take it personally
March 26th, 2008 at 11:16 amagreed with profmarcus, if tempered a little so as not to be so harsh…
Really, when it comes to our govt right now, who gives a rats ass about baseball?
March 26th, 2008 at 11:18 amHe just pardoned a bunch of substance abusers yesterday. Why would he have a problem pitching to one?
March 26th, 2008 at 11:19 amPaul LoDuca isn’t a heroin addict, he’s an athlete who took performance enhancers that most of the opposition was also taking. I understand the angle here but I think it’s unfair to paint LoDuca with the same brush as some manner of junkie.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:20 amLo Duca has shown public displays of roid rage on a several occasions. heckuva guy.
and yes, the title should be “Will Bush pitch to a fellow substance abuser?”
March 26th, 2008 at 11:21 amOf course he will. Remember this is the president who plans to attend the Olympics in Beijing and makes no connection between that and China’s relationship with Tibet.
Contrast this with Jimmy Carter who made the morally correct but extremely unpopular decision to stay home from the Moscow Olympics (AND keep all the American athletes home with him) because his conscience would not allow him to do anything that would give the appearance of supporting what the Soviets were doing to Afghanistan in 1980.
Bush has already claimed the ability to separate sports from other events — and he will claim that his opening pitch has nothing to do with the steroid flap. Even if he does pitch to someone in the center of it.

March 26th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Add to that, university football head coaches are paid more than the University president.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:24 amI hope this is sarcasm as these are the role models for our children…..I paint it as cheating and illegal and as drug abuse….I think it is perfectly fair.
Heroin is one you pulled out of your hat to make steroid look like asperin……I believe it does just as much damage as heroin.
Trivializing our problems will not make things better.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:30 amConsidering the neighborhood that’s now UNDER National Stadium, Bush should probably feel pretty lucky he’s pitching instead of catching…
March 26th, 2008 at 12:19 pmThe Cheerleader Prince will “pitch” for any willing “catcher” as long as he thinks they’re “kinda cute”. Jeff Gannon always brought his mitt to White House sleepovers.
March 26th, 2008 at 12:37 pmThe issue rather may be will Lo Duca catch from George W.
March 26th, 2008 at 1:47 pmWouldn’t a far more important story be about Bush attending the Olympics in China, despite their crackdown in Tibet…on top of their locking up dissidents, complete control of their media, blocking access to the internet to anything considered “sensitive,” etc.? Bush is “Mr. Democracy,” right? How does supporting an authoritarian, communist regime equate to support for democracy and freedom? This baseball pitching story is just plain stupid. Sorry…my opinion.
March 26th, 2008 at 4:26 pmCan baseball get any more boring?
March 26th, 2008 at 6:50 pmBush IS a substance abuser …
March 26th, 2008 at 11:48 pmI’ll be at this game, and I’ll be sure to boo as loud as I can!
March 27th, 2008 at 2:37 pmsrilanka
July 17th, 2008 at 12:53 amBush knows what he has to do.People knows about the President.he will be taking the correct action for this.
