GOP: Bush is a fundraising liability for ‘08 election.

In a new New York Times Magazine article, National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) admits that President Bush may not be welcome at GOP campaign events all across the country:

Cole mentioned Bush, but everyone thought that would be a mistake. “I think this cycle he and the vice president are going to be doing a lot of fund-raisers in the South and the Plains,” he said, and everyone guffawed in agreement. Even for an audience of Republican donors, in politically contested parts of the country, the president provokes complicated feelings. On another occasion Cole said to me, “I love the president, but his appeal isn’t universal.”

With all the money he and Cheney have stolen, they could finance any election.

But will bushie speak, prime-time at the g.o.p. convention?

  3. Badmoodman Says:

Oh really? NPR had a story this morning how Bush has raised almost three-quarters of a BILLION dollars for the RNC since he became president and that trend continues.

  4. Fan of Man Says:

    bush is a liability period!

  5. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Cole said to me, “I love the president, but his appeal isn’t universal.”

Yeah, it's pretty much limited to the hard-core 19% by now.

  6. Buckie Boy Says:

“I DESPISE the president, but his appeal isn’t universal.”

Worst, most criminal, universally loathed occupant to the White House, EVER.

Bush the Butcher, Bush the Destroyer, Bush the Loathed, Bush the War Criminal

Did I say, "I don't like Bush.", well, let me say it again, "I HATE BUSH."

  7. TheRadicalRightisRadicallyWrong Says:

    Funny, "...his appeal isn't universal."

You don't say. And today he's right here in the "burgh" at a fund raiser in Sewickly, home of none other than Richard Mellon Scaife. And yes they closed the roads for the chimp-kings safe travel.

  8. Doc Rock Says:

He's certainly not popular at our house!

  9. tombaker Says:

Sorry Tom, It's not the bush, it's the "R".

  10. Chocolate Jesus Says:

    >Bush has raised almost three-quarters

i tend to agree, but for every dollar of fundraising he gets repubs, he gives dems 2 dollars of free attack ads of him with his "victim"..uhm i mean candiadate..

thank god we still have idle speculation about timeframes so long that we'll be dead before anyone can prove we're wrong..

Am I reading this right? Republicans don't want to acknowledge the leader of their party? That may be true but I'm not going to let them forget. Bush is the leader of the republican party. It's his vision and guidance that has put them where they are. I'm going to start attending Republican rallys and demanding that we here from Bush.

Bush=Republican. This union has been forged by the lost blood and treasure of the last 7 years. No way will I sit by while the republicans ignore what they created.

On another occasion Cole said to me, “I love the president, but his appeal isn’t universal.”

Heh. I'd call that the understatement of the CENTURY.

  13. stateofthedivision Says:

Cole and the rest of the NRCC Executive Committee are responsible for their over 5 year accounting scandal where the Treasurer made off with as much as $1 million in donated funds. After voting for increased financial oversight via Sarbanes-Oxley, NRCC governance ignored their fiduciary responsibilities to campaign donors. That could be part of the reason why people aren't stepping up to the plate.

Bush certainly has earned his unpopularity, but Tom helped dig their current fundraising ditch with his sorry leadership. Divert, minimize, deny, attack, it's a tiresome pattern.

    Off topic,
but I would like to say:
I'm not buying the horse shit notion that McBush is electable.

    Bush is a fundraising liability.

    Gee, I can't imagine why.

    YA THINK?

  17. Nevar Says:

I overheard an obvious gun and cross toting old goober in western Oklahoma declaring to his table at the morning coffee klatsch: "You know everything that's wrong with America today is all Bush's fault"

I wanted to pipe up and say "We tried to tell you that 7 years ago", but there were too many of them between me and the door, and I wasn't finished with my breakfast.

  18. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

"Many conservative activists have become so dissatisfied with the party’s heresies, particularly on immigration and government spending, that as Cole’s staff took over, the committee’s fund-raising pleas were being ignored and, on at least one occasion, returned in an envelope stuffed with feces."

Didn't read the entire article; it's about 8 pages long...but this was my favorite on the first page.

    Nevar,
Bush is responsible for High oil proces, declining house values and job losses. He’s allowed Mortgage companies to rip us off and gives tax breaks to companies that ship our jobs overseas.
    Mission Accomplished Bush!

Well, at least I'll get to tell you we tried to tell you that 7 years ago.
How's your coffee? can I get you a refill?

  21. Zimzone Says:

I hope he becomes McCON's shadow, showing up at every event and trying to upstage the elderly one.

  22. misshusseinmolly Says:

Darn -- too bad the GOP remembers what happened to them in 2006. And that was WITH most of the Republican candidates attempting to keep a safe distance from Bushco in order to hold onto their seats.

There are some congressional districts in this country (as well as senate seats) that will stay R because they are in very, very red territory. Everything else is up for grabs, and the Dems have the advantage. The GOP is correct to be concerned.

Darn -- I had 2:17 pm. I thought it would take longer.

  24. ralph the wonder llama Says:

You may still win, misshusseinmolly. I had 11:08 am. I thought there would be more troll activity today. Must be the "success" of the surge has them all gun-shy.

  25. Uncle Ho Says:

Nevar; somehow, your post reminded me of the Charlie Daniels tune of "the Ballad of Uneasy Rider"

    :-)

I know the lyrics by heart, Uncle Ho...

  28. A Patriot Acting Says:

I think it's a combination of Bush being bad for fundraising and that Right Wingers are saving all their mad money for all those looming legal defense funds on the horizon. That's right Karl, I'm talking about you and your boss and the rest of your repugnant friends. I don't see many more colleges helping these crooks out in the future with speaking engagements either.

  29. Xisithrus Says:

Bush is a fundraising liability yet they want a guy just like Bush in office?

  30. regular_joe Says:

I too must admit to "complicated feelings" with regard to the president: I absolutely detest the SOB.

But I'm really glad the GOP, and Mr. Cole are so fond of him. And they'll REALLY love him after they lose several presidential contests as a direct result of the catastrophes that occurred under Mr. Bush's "leadership," e.g. 9/11, Iraq, Katrina, the emerging economic recession, $3+/gal gasoline, the burgeoning federal debt, the falling dollar ... the list is long and space is limited.

During the great depression, the Hoover "effect" was sufficient to keep Republicans out of the White House for a generation. IMHO, Bush is Hoover on steroids.

  31. Jackie Says:

Bush will start fund raising when the rebate checks are released. He'll ask Americans to donate those checks to the McCain campaign. Don't laugh people will do as he says with the help of the Media. It's been done many times before and it works every time. Al Qaeda/Iraq, Saddam/Osama and of course the WMD/Mushroom Cloud.

  32. Marie Says:

With the moron going around professing that Iraq is a success (with bombs bursting, and increased violence in the streets) and announcing that the economy is strong and tax cuts should be made permanent, while people are evicted and the banks are bailed out -- who in their right mind would want him to appear at a fundraiser?
People might want to donate rotten eggs and tomatoes instead of cash. Even Republicans (at least the few who have any sense)!

  33. republicanSScareme Says:

    "...the president provokes complicated feelings."

There's nothing complicated about total disgust.
