Graham: ‘Joe Lieberman is a national treasure.’»

During a recent interview, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) “something special,” recounting their recent trip abroad. He also claimed that people around the world view McCain as a “reassuring” presence, but later admitted that no one had a “McCain sticker” on their desk:

GRAHAM: Senator Lieberman, I think, is a national treasure, because no matter how you feel about his politics, he was willing to risk everything, politically, for a cause he believed in. But to see the interaction between these two guys and world leaders was something special. […]

I think John McCain will be a reassuring presence to the world. … It really was a smile on people’s faces, knowing that if this guy got to be president, I think we could do business with him. … I think he’s a reassuring presence. Doesn’t mean that they prefer John over Obama or Senator Clinton, but there’s a level of comfort there. […]

Q: But some probably do prefer him, don’t they?

GRAHAM: Oh, I would think, but no one told us. No one had a McCain sticker on their desk.

  1. BearCountry Says:

The only people that would have smiles on their faces would be big business types, especially defense industry executives. The rest of the world will be quivering in fear of 100 years of war stretching ahead of us, more tax cuts for the rich to drive the world economy further on the road to destruction, and government influenced by the wild ideas of christofascists.

  2. And Yet... Says:

    Oh, Huckleberry, how sweet! *retches*

JoeLie will really be such a treasure for you Repubs when he appears at your convention. Just like ol’ Zell Miller was.

  3. katy Says:

    what “everything” did he risk?
    and what was that “cause”?

lindsey graham - HEY! SHUT THAT CLOSET DOOR! - is mistaking
“the interaction between … world leaders” as something more than
the common courtesy shown by most world leaders… most…

  4. tom Says:

Old Smokin’ Joe is a national treasure, alright . . . in Israel.

  5. tom Says:

Joe and John . . . two world leaders?

More like “Frick and Frack Go Abroad”.

  6. henry wallace Says:

Lieberman is a neocon NATIONAL DISGRACE…and a spy for Israel.

  7. mary Says:

“When The Day endorsed Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman for re-election in November 2006 it was supporting a candidate who demonstrated a history of pragmatic leadership and a willingness to seek bipartisan solutions.

We wonder what happened to that senator.”

(New London, Connecticut newspaper expressing their unhappiness with Joe LIEberman last Sunday.)

“Rather than building the bridges The Day expected when it endorsed Sen. Lieberman, he appears busy burning bridges with the party of which he is allegedly still a member.”

Some of the comments are interesting.

  8. hussein toasterhead Says:

I couldn’t agree more. Lieberman is very much like a crappy movie that Nicholas Cage should be ashamed to be associated with.

In fact, I’d even take Graham’s analogy farther and call Lieberman a National Treasure II: Book of Secrets.

  9. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) “something special,” recounting their recent trip abroad.

    Get a room already. Yech!

  10. Lungman424 Says:

  12. Kay Says:

    oops sorry #7 : I didn’t read earlier posts.

  13. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

It really was a smile on people’s faces, knowing that if this guy got to be president, I think we could do business with him.

Only in your fantasy world. I am quite sure world leaders are watching our race for President and know that McBush will follow in Bush’s footsteps. Since they detest Bush, why would that put a smile on their faces?

  14. mary Says:

I would say though that your typical American can be fooled as easily as your typical Connecticut voter. I sure hope we never have to find out how much of a warmonger Joe Lieberman is.

  15. Kay Says:

McSenile is a “National WarMonger Elitist neoCON Racist who wishes Perpetual War”

  16. pluege Says:

gee, I bet those world leaders are just dieing to be invited to a BBQ at Sedona to watch big john cook as much as Joe Sixpack couldn’t wait to have a beer with bush…and that worked out just swell as a great measure of competence and integrity.
    .

  17. misshusseinmolly Says:

GRAHAM: “Senator Lieberman, I think, is a national treasure,…”
    – I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

“…because no matter how you feel about his politics, he was willing to risk everything, politically, for a cause he believed in.”
    – True. He’s willing to risk his own country plus the rest of the world if necessary, to support Israel.

“But to see the interaction between these two guys and world leaders was something special.”
    – I bet it was. How often do you get to see a guy in front of world leaders and world audiences who can’t function without another guy whispering in his ear?

  18. Nevar Says:

“…No one had a McCain sticker on their desk.”

I don’t see any on the bumpers of cars either.

  19. Tired of being lied to Says:

A national treasure? C’mon, Lindsey, what cha’ been smokin’?

It Joey is a national treasure, it must be fool’s gold.

  20. Kay Says:

LIEberman is a “National Disgrace that Panders to the Israeli Lobby Turncoat from the Democratic Party and he’s part of the War Machine that is Killing this country and our standing in the World”

  21. christopher wiwi Says:

Me thinks Graham looking for a spot on the McLame ticket!!!!!

  22. katy Says:

    no, seriously… does anyone know?

    what “everything” did he risk?
    and what was that “cause”?

  23. jpopphan Says:

I think John McCain will be a reassuring presence to the world.

You’re kidding, right? Are we talking about the same John McCain who has basically pledged to carry out Bush’s agenda for the next four years if he is elected? Is this the same John McCain who has a well-earned reputation for being a hothead?

Sorry, Sen. Graham, but you are totally out of touch with reality if you think that our allies will be pleased with another George Bush Republican in charge. The world is crying out for change in our leadership, and McCain represents no change at all.

    Puhleeze.

  24. Zooey Says:

Lindsey, sweetie, it doesn’t matter how much you schmooz Joe, he isn’t going to sleep with you.

  25. misshusseinmolly Says:

Does Graham believe that anyone who is willing to risk anything for a cause they believe in is a “national treasure”?

In that case, a president and a vice president who are willing to sacrifice their country, their standing in the world, their country’s budget and financial stability, and the security of the American people all for the cause of enriching their oil buddies and other corporate connections must also be “national treasures” — right?

Oh wait — Graham is a Republican. Of course this is what he thinks!

  26. PeterW Says:

So, in that light, we should lock him in a vault in Fort Knox and throw away the key.

    Airholes? Ooops…

  27. PeterW Says:

    #17 - I take issue with that.

Supporting Israel would involve pressuring them to make an equitable settlement with the people they occupy and their neighbors.

Lieberman doesn’t support Israel. He supports Israel’s murderously racist and imperialist political class. Not the same thing.

  28. bratboy Says:

    A “national treasure?”

    ROTFLMAO!!

A national disgrace perhaps, but never a “treasure.”

  29. Dirty Hippie Says:

Defying the will of your constituency, your party, and the majority of the the public qualifies you as a “national treasure”. Don’t these assholes work for us? Graham and Lieberman are both quantum douche bags who’ve abetted the destruction of our democracy.

  30. Nevar Says:

Therefore, he should be in a museum.

  31. Marie Says:

Oops, not national treasure — National Traitor.
    There, I fixed it.

  32. fletc3her Says:

Let’s retire the national treasure to a museum.

  33. PeterW Says:

#29 Therefore, he should be in a museum.

We need to get top men working on him.

    Top. Men.

/pan Lieberman being enclosed in a wooden crate
//pan out to crate being wheeled through a giant warehouse filled with identical crates. Crate turns corner and disappears from view.
    ///cue title music

  34. Doc Rock Says:

So like any treasure, let’s bury him where X marks the spot and fill his seat with a Democrat.

  35. L. Hussein Annie Says:

Jebus. Only a retarded Republican would say something *that* stupid.

  36. williamf Says:

    Say what? Huh?

  37. Guido the Loving OBGYN Says:

You mean he’s like a stupid Nicolas Cage movie?

  38. McWars Says:

When the warmongers have no one else to complement them, they resort to complementing each other.

  39. Tawdry Says:

Looks like Graham is in the cozy middle stall of the men’s room right between McCain and Lieberman. Which cabinet post do you suppose Lindsey is sucking up for?

  40. RUCerious Says:

Poor LilyWhiteLindsay. He’s mixing up Nicolas Cage movies with senile politicians.

  41. Bob Says:

The only stickers are stealies and dancing bears and all those peace signs. One man’s treasure is another man’s trash, it all depends on the perspective.

  42. lilysmom Says:

I am laughing too hard to comment….sorry
Do you think that Joe knows that Lindsay thinks that Joe has a cute butt?

  43. Kay Says:

    Crackers (graham) hearts Joey

  44. zuch Says:

[Graham]: I think John McCain [… singing “Bomb, Bomb Iran” and with his finger on the nuclear button …] will be a reassuring presence to the world. … It really was a smile on people’s faces, knowing that if this guy got to be president, I think we could do business with him….

… or he’ll do “the business” on us….

Graham is deluded … or dishonest … or both.

    Cheers,

  45. Chocolate Jesus Says:

Why do I see Sissy Lindsay Cracker Graham calling Joe “fabulous” in the very near future?

  46. VerbalKint Says:

Graham is competing with Inhofe for stupidest Republican in Congress.

Oh, wait, I forgot about Michelle Bachmann. Never mind.

  47. Wayne Says:

Why does Graham think manure compost piles are National Treasures?
    Oh, he is Republican…..

  48. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    “A National treasure”?

That makes sense. In college I had a roommate who was inordinately proud of his morning defecations. He used to call them “national treasures” too.

So I see where Graham is coming from.

  49. stewarjt Says:

Sure he’s a national treasure if by national treasure you mean a treasonous, heaping, steaming, coiling pile of shite!

  50. Robt Says:

    Lindsey, Lindsey, Lindsey,

“MCain was a stalwart against torture when no one else was”.
McCain just went out of his way to for in favor of torture on the last Senate Bill.

I am sure the Leaders he met with on the trip saw McCain as a tired sleepy guy who they cold take advantage of. A guy who couldn’t identify the difference between Sunni, Shia, Al Qaida, and insurgent extremists in Iraq. But they may have thought McCain to be a half a step up from GW. Obama or Clinton at the top of the stairs.

And yet Lindsey expresses a sentiment that McCain is the only one who made or makes sacrifices. He is alive and a Senator via the hands of wealth after his sacrifice. We have 4 thousand U.S. troops that are not alive after their sacrifice.

  51. Evil Spaniard Says:

“Graham: ‘Joe Lieberman is a national treasure.’”

As the mummies at Cairo Museum?

  52. tombaker Says:

If Joe qualifies as treasure, then we’re a giant Goodwill store.

  53. L. Hussein Annie Says:

Heh. Just look at Lindsay’s statement in Orwellian terms - THEN it makes sense - you know:

    War is peace.
    Freedom is slavery.
    Ignorance is strength.
Joe Lieberman is a national treasure.

    See…?

  54. andy phx Says:

Suck him off already, Gayham. Gayham loves him some older, married men. He’d better watch out-Hadasa may scratch his eyes out.

  55. Max-1 Says:

    .

If Sissy Graham could bronze crap, THEN he’d be correct.

    .

  56. Cal Malenky Says:

    How about National Trasher?

  57. terhuxtim Says:

If Lieberman is a National treasure then can we bury it????

  58. SP Biloxi Says:

“Graham: ‘Joe Lieberman is a national treasure.’”

Yup, and that kiss to Bush and the drink of the GOP koolaid sealed Joe Lickerman as the new GOP recruit.

  59. woodguy Says:

If Ol’Joe is a national treasure, can we make him buried treasure?

  60. moondancer Says:

In whatever country Borat comes from maybe, he’s a one-man plague here.

  61. republicanSScareme Says:

I thought he said ‘Joe Lieberman is a national trasher.’

Lindsey Graham wouldn’t know a national treasure from a one eyed pig on rollerskates.

  62. 99Luf Balloons Says:

“But to see the interaction between these two guys and world leaders was something special.”

“I am still cleaning spluge from my cloths.” Graham retorts.
