At a University of Georgia roundtable discussion yesterday, five former secretaries of State — Henry Kissinger, James Baker, Warren Christopher, Madeleine Albright, and Colin Powell — agreed that the next president should move quickly to close Guantanamo Bay. Highlights from the Atlanta Journal Constitution:
Powell, who was in office when the notorious prison opened in Cuba, was the first Thursday to call for it to be shuttered. The most recent holder of the office on the stage, Powell served the current president from 2001 to 2005.
“Our image abroad has dropped significantly,” Powell said. He put some of that blame on his former boss. [...]
Guantanamo “gives us a very, very bad name, not just internationally,” [James] Baker said. “I have a great deal of difficulty understanding how we can hold someone, pick someone up, particularly someone who might be an American citizen, even if they were caught somewhere abroad, acting against American interests, and hold them without ever giving them an opportunity to appear before a magistrate.”
Bipartisan cooperation is so rare that when it happens, it’s worth listening to.
Will Bushco listen? I predict their only reaction (if there is one at all) will be “So?”
March 28th, 2008 at 2:37 pmCondi isn’t on that list. Of course, she’s not a “former” SoS yet — she’s still functioning as the Bush Wind-up Doll of State.
But when she becomes a “former” Secretary of State, will she join in this particular chorus?
March 28th, 2008 at 2:40 pm5 former Secretary’s of State and…
243 Million Americans!

Oh, missmolly, you are so charmingly naive sometimes.
To BushCo, what we see as “bipartisan cooperation”, they see as “treason”. Still, you may be right. Their only reaction may be a sneering, “So?” The alternative would be for The Lying Sack of Cute™ Dana Perino to question the patriotism of five former Secretaries of State (three of them Republican).
March 28th, 2008 at 2:42 pmGuantanamo “gives us a very, very bad name, not just internationally,” [James] Baker said.
No chit, Cherlock. You just figured that out…?
March 28th, 2008 at 2:43 pm“I have a great deal of difficulty understanding how we can hold someone, pick someone up, particularly someone who might be an American citizen, even if they were caught somewhere abroad, acting against American interests, and hold them without ever giving them an opportunity to appear before a magistrate.”
lets just give bush crime family a pass… that’ll help!
March 28th, 2008 at 2:44 pmWhat a sorry, photo-op! Each of these people has made a career of APOLOGIZING for this ill, or that (for the Republican chimera!) How many times can ‘talking heads’ shoot themselves in the foot? If our reputation in the world is bad, and comment is called for, then logically why not include a ‘values assessment’ of just how bad it is? These Re-heads are jumping to a solution, without discussing the politcal problems we face! Pitiful!!
March 28th, 2008 at 2:47 pmWhere was Colin Powell’s backbone when it mattered – when he was in the administration? Now he wants it closed. Real profile in courage.
March 28th, 2008 at 2:54 pmSure they’re asking the NEXT president to close Gitmo. Because they’re AFRAID to tell this one what to do?
March 28th, 2008 at 2:54 pmOr what, they’ll use harsh language in a nasty letter to the President….Congress? Cheney trumps them all.
March 28th, 2008 at 2:56 pm…agreed that the next president should move quickly to close Guantanamo Bay.
Because they know that Chimpy McFlightsuit would neither understand nor act on their common sensical recommendation.
March 28th, 2008 at 2:57 pmCheney is the Anti-christ.
Bush is the Court Jester.
The only logic in this house is, we have no logic.
March 28th, 2008 at 2:59 pmPOWELL: WHY were you so quiet when you were part of the GOP?
March 28th, 2008 at 3:00 pmTo skippy at 16:
And you neocons want to discard two hundred years of due process and legal tradition like so much toilet paper because you haven’t the courage to recognize human rights as universal.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:06 pmJames Baker worked tirelessly to get the boy-king installed in the White House. Thanks for nothing, Baker.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:07 pmES,
March 28th, 2008 at 3:08 pmPowell had one fault, he was a loyal soldier and would always bow to his commander. He even stayed on post-election when he and W were at odds.
Even James Baker sounds sane compared to this administration?!
March 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pmskippy brought his pointy white hood with him – isn’t that cute.
skippy, i’d be careful about throwing “-tard” around – your helmet is showing through you hood.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pmMan, Troll Central is really giving everyone a shot at the big time, aren’t they?
They’ll hand a keyboard to any raw recruit who steps through the door (or in skippy’s case, the kid who delivered their lunch order…)
March 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pmskippy – you’re a retarded coward/pussy dittohead and I sincerely wish you the worst of everything life has to offer.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:12 pmSkippy@20:
This is the last biscuit you’ll get from me, troll, but I find it all too instructive that you have no specifics to offer in those remarks other than the obvious subtext of racial bigotry.
Then again, perhaps we should interpret your skill with language and the keyboard as a reflection of your intellectual acumen?

Not to worry, tombaker — skippy’s kind of psychosis and hatred pretty much guarantees him a life of misery, which he will then blame on others.

March 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pmlet’s just close skippy’s tweaker trailer park instead – it would do the whole country a lot more good.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pmskippy i don’t think for a second you have any idea what you’re talking about – you’re a boring re-run of a bad tv show that i never watched in the first place.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:16 pmUh, oh… sounds like skippy’s tweaked one dose too far.
Could someone who cares call the paramedics?
March 28th, 2008 at 3:20 pmWe should close down any place white trash idiots like Skippy live.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:21 pmNOBODY cares. Extermination is the only solution.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:22 pmSkippy: May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your genitals, and may your arms be too short to scratch.
OK, game on…
March 28th, 2008 at 3:23 pmTell us Skippy, as a white male in America what’s your excuse for being a total failure?
March 28th, 2008 at 3:23 pmWell it’s obvious Asians are genetically smarter than you are Skippy. As are Hispanics and African Americans and every other ethnic group. It’s nobody’s fault but your own for being such a loser.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:25 pmOh hi CT, thanks for outing yourself. You’re only here for a very short time aren’t you? Too bad you can’t control yourself to last a little bit longer, you must be starving at ten cents a post.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:27 pmOh, it’s our good friend C**T.
I knew that voice sounded familiar. All that shouting.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:29 pmNo your failure is blaming others instead of doing work to better yourself. But that is the neocon way isn’t it? Blame minorities for keeping you down while your masters continue to beat you down. What a bunch of idiots.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pmNot to mention the poor little C**T’s own unique version of race-baiting…
Good eye, Shayne.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:32 pmIt’s kind of hard to get here from Asia if you don’t have any money isn’t it. It’s not like we abducted Asians and brought them here on slave boats or anything.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:32 pmI don’t know ralph now I’m beginning to think it’s Mr. P. calling me Shaynee. CT would be more insulting by now.

Mr. Pee is a little more careful about his use of language.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:37 pmThis whole deal is pitiful but still sort of amusing
March 28th, 2008 at 3:39 pmever hear of Coolies, dummy?
u keep up the incoherent jibber-jabber, and i’ll keep reminding you how big an idiot you are, OK?
sooner or later, cooler heads will prevail, and you’ll get flagged the F on out of here
until then – kiss my libtard moonbat ass – pussy.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:40 pmTrollshit cleanup detail, please, it’s flooding may aisles…
March 28th, 2008 at 3:41 pmYou forgot the subject while you were busy moving the goalpost loser. The question is why are you such a loser?
March 28th, 2008 at 3:41 pmflamin’ jesus – it’s a living breathing Turner Diaries character.
how’s armed-militia-compound-life-in-Idaho treatin’ ya skippy?
watch out for the ATF.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:42 pmflag on.
you’re done, dummy.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:43 pmThe troll should do more to confront his masters — those oppressing him — instead of blaming disadvantaged minorities.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:44 pmIf there is a Satan I’m sure you’ve just reserved yourself a special place in Hell. You are suggesting that former slaves should be grateful that they were abducted from their families and brought here. How about the millions that died on the unbearable trip over, I hope they’re waiting for you in Hell.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:45 pmSkippy?

Well they weren’t abducted exactly, but we did import thousands of Chinese laborers to work long hours for extremely low pay in often treacharous conditions to build the Trans-Continental Railroad.
Not exactly the same as slavery, but it was pretty close.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:45 pmSkippy?
Remember to latch the kennel gate next time, will ya sonny?
March 28th, 2008 at 3:47 pmBut many, many Asians who have come here since have come here with big chunks of change. It’s hard to determine who started with nothing and who started here with a lot.

March 28th, 2008 at 3:50 pmWhew — it took me awhile, but I finally managed to flag all of skippy’s posts. Troll-turd cleanup is hard work.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:52 pmFrom the linked article:
Kissinger, who served under presidents Nixon and Ford, said that not all of the criticism of the United States is because of American actions. “Some of it is also due to structural changes going on in other parts of the world,” he said.
Yeah. Like countries trying to stand up to multi-national corporate militarists like you, henry, and reap the benefits of their own natural resources.
In Europe, for example, governments no longer are the driving forces of national sentiment, Kissinger said. “European governments cannot ask their people to make sacrifices that American presidents can.”
Yeah, cause the Europeans throw their corrupt asses in the gutter if they do. And the driving force of national sentiment is morality and human rights.
Go to hell, Henry Kissinger.

I have. I’ve been to the “3rd world.” Average dudes there usually want to stay there. Unfortunately, economic realities often force them to migrate to other countries to support their families through remittances.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pmWe’ve all been flagging the turd, I mean troll. The moderators must be out to lunch.
March 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pmShayne, can i offer a little friendly advice…?
You are coming a little too close to actually engaging the troll on its issue of choice.
Abuse the troll all you want, ridicule it, point out its foolishness… God knows there’s plenty there to work with. But just ignore its stupid cause d’troll.
It’s the only way you can help it.

You are so right ralph. What do you think about waterboarding him? He knows nothing of importance but at least it would shut him up, maybe.

March 28th, 2008 at 4:01 pmI think waterboarding would be an excellent idea — hey! where’d he go?

They’re making progress. The severe beating the trolls have been getting here is evidence that they’re winning. They can’t retreat or al Qaeda will take over TP. They’re here to liberate TP. They’ve been told that TPers will greet them with flowers and candy.
They were misinformed.
March 28th, 2008 at 4:30 pmI wonder if the troll gets paid his ten cents if his post gets deleted.
ralph, now they’re misinformed AND malformed.
March 28th, 2008 at 4:54 pmsilly me – i forgot we were living in a “majority conservative” country again.
March 28th, 2008 at 5:16 pmJames Baker is one of the strongest critics of the five of the lawless treatment of detainees there, according to the article (as I highlight on my blog). But Baker is one of the “engineers” of the lawless installation of Dubya as preznit in the first place. Guess Guantánamo is too much even for him.
Cheers,
