McCain Changes His Taxes Position Again, Back On The ‘No New Taxes’ Talking Point

In February, ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) if he was a “‘read my lips’ candidate” who believed in “no new taxes, no matter what?” “No new taxes,” responded McCain. Stephanopoulos pressed McCain further, asking “under circumstances would you increase taxes?” “No,”declared McCain.

Watch it:

But McCain soon changed his position. Two week after telling Stephanopoulos that he would not support new taxes under any circumstances, McCain backed away from his pledge in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, claiming that he wouldn’t make a firm commitment to not raise taxes:

Q: On ABC’s “This Week” on Feb. 17, in response to a question, “Are you a ‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes?” you replied, “No new taxes.” Did you mean that literally?

MCCAIN: I’m not making a “read my lips” statement in that I will not raise taxes. But I’m not saying I can envision a scenario where I would, OK? But I’m not making it a centerpiece in my campaign.

Now McCain is flip-flopping again, this time back to his rigid “no new taxes” pledge. Speaking in Utah yesterday, McCain declared that “I will wait forever to increase Americans’ taxes because I don’t think that’s beneficial to our economy.”

Looks like Little Johnny McSame has successfully completed Econ 101 for Republican Dummies. The entire course consists in a one-hour lecture by Poppy Bu$h and a one-question multiple choice final exam:
    Q: Will you raise taxes?
    A: 0 — read my lips . . . no new taxes
    0 — read my lips . . . no new taxes
    0 — read my lips . . . no new taxes
0 — all of the above

  4. woodguy says:

“I will wait forever.” That would be about the same time old McShrub would be willing to end the madness in Iraq.

  5. williamf says:

You don’t raise taxes without the congress. So Emperor hopeful McClone, “we’ll” raise taxes is appropriate not “I’ll” raise taxes. With the next congress “I” believe you’ll find it difficult to get away with chopping taxes for Bush’s oil buddies. It will perhaps be more relevant to think in terms of taking the log off the shoulders of the middle class. This government was not established with an I to run it. Our founders had in mind a legislative, executive, and judicial all equal partners in the democracy we are supposed to live in. The sooner you take the “I” out of what you’ll do the sooner the people will know you are not considering yourself a dictator.

  17. AngryOne says:

As much as anything else, presidential campaigns are won and lost by the media narratives that rightly or wrongly come to define a candidate. In the case of Repubican nominee John McCain, the seemingly unshakable narrative of the political “maverick” could not be further off the mark. At almost every turn, McCain in his eternal quest for the White House has reversed long-held positions, compromised core principles and swallowed his pride in order to curry favor with both the leading lights of the conservative movement and right-wing Republican primary voters. The untold story of campaign 2008 is simply that of John McCain’s transformation from maverick to prostitute.

    For the details, see:
“From Maverick to Prostitute: The Untold Story of John McCain.”

Oh! Thanks ralph the wonder llama! I thought maybe my blood sugar level was perilously low or something.

Because, otherwise, I was kind of thinking that spending restraint does NOT equal starting a bogus war that will cost trillions that we need to borrow from China and cause the U.S. to incur debt that resulted in over $400 Billion in interest payments alone for fiscal year 2006.

Those Republicans sure know spending restraint!

I’m for eliminating stupid tax breaks, like those for sending jobs overseas (a really stupid idea, whoever came up with that. I mean, a tax cut for profiteering!?), and for reversing the tax cuts on those making more than $1,000,000. Some would lower the threshold, and that’s reasonable, too.

Those Republicans sure know spending restraint!

Spending restraint to republicans, I would say, has more to do with the source of the money spent. If the rich aren’t receiving a tax break, only then do Republicans want to practice restraint with there precious money. But for the middle class, who are shouldering costs for things they don’t want to buy, it’s a free-for-all with no borrowing restraint to make up for the tax cuts on the rich. Their plans are for the middle class to cover that debt, too, or bear the brunt of the loan defaults.

    33. Pretty scarey stuff! Wouldn’t it be the epitome of irony if, after Rush Limpdick has all his “operatives” help gain Clinton the nomination, she beats the tar out of McCain in the general election? These Righty neocon assholes could then blaim themselves for having another President Clinton on their hands. That would be too funny!

  37. williamf says:

The Republicans have no idea how to connect with the people otherwise there would be a government of consensus and compromise. When McCain uses the term, I will raise taxes, the arrogance of the republican mind set is obvious. “I” instead of “we.” I must say this way of thinking is the way of making revolution not resolution. The self-centered, judgmental, and ideological separatist mentality of the current republican horde is a serious matter. Soon, the middle class will be taxed without representation. I’ve heard that phrase before somewhere. NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!

Rush is our Moqtada Al Sadr, and I’m not prepared to let a thug militia operate openly. If we don’t do away with them soon, they’ll start driving around towns in pickup trucks bristling with assault weapons, shooting at anyone that doesn’t fit their standard of Hatriotism.
