The right wing has been jubilantly celebrating the fact that ThinkProgress made an error in claiming John McCain had plagiarized a speech by Adm. Timothy Ziemer. Drudge, Weekly Standard, National Review, and Instapundit have all referenced our mistake. On its “political grapevine” segment this evening, Fox News reported our error as well. Fox host Bret Baier said, “The left-wing blog ThinkProgress has had to eat its words.” Watch it:
The actions we took in the wake of our mistake demonstrate this site’s commitment to maintaining credibility and transparency. Unlike many of our critics, we took responsibility for our actions once we realized that it was Ziemer who had plagiarized McCain. We immediately issued a correction, apologized for our error, and expressed our regret to the McCain campaign.
At the end of the segment, Fox News referenced this website as “ThinkProgress.com” in an on-screen chyron. Note to Fox: we’re actually ThinkProgress.org. It’s ok — we all make mistakes.
“Good” news is so hard to come by for FoxSnooze these days so it’s no surprise that they jumped on this.
Of course, if they were inclined to own up to their mistakes, the “Daily Retraction Show” would take up an hour of programming time or more.
No fear of that, though. FoxSnooze has no commitment to maintaining its credibility or transparency. Its credibility is zero and its agenda already is transparent.

March 28th, 2008 at 7:08 pmDid Fox do the .com instead of .org on purpose to limit all the hits they would generate for TP?
March 28th, 2008 at 7:09 pmI cant even begin to count the amount of times FOX and the rest of the irrelevant class were wrong and still wrong.
March 28th, 2008 at 7:10 pmDoes anyone want to even try and count the amount of times that Faux has been wrong?
Thought not.
March 28th, 2008 at 7:13 pmFOX Slews and their parasitic parrots still refuses to admit that Obamas Church was Christian, not Muslim.
Will they eat those words? Naw, they have no integrity or morals and wont admit to being wrong.
March 28th, 2008 at 7:13 pmYep, I saw it — they were gloating. They have so little to praise in and among themselves, so when the opposition errs, it’s cause to shout it from the mountaintops. Even though the opposition corrected their error within hours! (Something they are loathe to do themselves on their many occasions of error.)
March 28th, 2008 at 7:13 pmThis is actually great news for ThinkProgress.org. FOX and the other right-wing outlets are merely confirming the fact that ThinkProgress has become an important generator and disseminator of news! The more people who watch this site for story ideas the better.
March 28th, 2008 at 7:14 pmTP simply misspoke, and we all know that when you simply misspeak there are no words to eat.

I do understand you Righties have had a real tough time of it for a long time though, so I’m not really surpised at the eruption of misplaced juvenile glee over this opportunity to “turn the tables”.
Maybe you guys should make up some MoveOn flags and Kos effigies and go burn them in the street while chanting “death to moonbats” or somesuch. It would really fit in nicely with your worldview and preferred methodology.

March 28th, 2008 at 8:03 pmWow — we made the “big time”?
Actually, I think that what Fox News found newsworthy was the apology for disseminating incorrect information. This is such a foreign concept to them that, to them, it was probably an earth-shattering, hard-to-wrap-the-mind-around event.
March 28th, 2008 at 8:03 pmStavrakios is one of those Greek Cypriot Anarcho-Syndicalists that were once popular in the political thriller literary genre (though they were usually protrayed as terrorists). Congratulations on that – very “retro”.
If, in fact, “the right wing” is so jubilant, it can only demonstrate how very easily amused they are, and how relieved they are not to be on the receiving end of this particular embarrassing item. Those righties do commit more than their fair share of plagiarism though – just look at that poor coulter woman.
Propaganda flows from the seat of power to the public – not from “some blog on the internet to the seat of power”.
If you believe Think Progress is a threat to the common good for disseminating bad information you’re one real paranoid mofo.

Soros funds OSI which in turn funds Tydes Foundation which has funded Media Matters, so you’re right Soros doesn’t directly fund them.
However Soros does fund the Center for American Progress which of course funds this little website.
But George isn’t all bad, he also put 100 million into the Carlyle Group with the Bush and Bin Laden family.
Carlyle was founded in 1987 by Stephen L. Norris, and David M. Rubenstein They later hired Dan D’Aniello, William Conway and Greg Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum left in 1987; Norris left in 1995. The three remaining founders are reported to collectively own around a 50% interest in the group’s general partnership. The California Public Employees Retirement System (or CalPERS) is the only US institution which owns a stake in the partnership, holding 5.5% of Carlyle for which it paid $175 million in 2001. In 2007 Mubadala Development, an investment vehicle for the Government of Abu Dhabi, purchased a 7.5% stake for $1.35 billion..
As they wanted the firm to outlive them, Norris and Rubenstein named the firm after the Upper East Side area hotel in New York City, the Carlyle Hotel, where they first met to discuss the idea. Carlyle’s current chairman is Lou Gerstner, former chairman and CEO of IBM and Nabisco.
Carlyle has only allowed two outsiders to buy into its partnership. The first is the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), who “own a 5.5% stake in the company that is estimated to be worth about $1 billion.” The second is Mubadala Development Company – “an investment group owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, which is part of the United Arab Emirates.” In September of 2007, they bought a “7.5 percent share of [Carlyle's] general partnership for $1.35 billion.”

In linguistics and ethnology, Semitic (from the Biblical “Shem”, Hebrew: ??, translated as “name”, Arabic: ?????) was first used to refer to a language family of largely Middle Eastern origin, now called the Semitic languages. This family includes the ancient and modern forms of Amharic, Arabic, Aramaic, Akkadian, Ge’ez, Hebrew, Phoenician, Maltese, Tigre and Tigrinya among others.
As language studies are interwoven with cultural studies, the term also came to describe the extended cultures and ethnicities, as well as the history of these varied peoples as associated by close geographic and linguistic distribution. The late 19th century term “anti-Semitism” refers specifically to hostility toward Jews, further complicating the understood meaning and boundaries of the term.

Since you love Judaism so much , go to Israel right now……..And take Joe Lieberman with you (and don’t ever come back)

I know you will somehow find a way to disagree but I contend that every time the republicans get in office there is a huge economic scandal and a recession…..
I don’t think any democrat would ever have taken us to Iraq. I also believe that something would have been done by now to address our health care crisis if a democrat had been elected. So don’t try to say they are the same….they are not.

March 28th, 2008 at 10:25 pmThe comments on this site are a stark example of groupthink. Any divergent comment or thought is ridiculed or pushed away in order to reinforce the status quo.
Because of this groupthink, the journalistic shortcomings that brought embarrassment to this site today will not be repaired. This failure is seen not as a symptom of a greater problem, rather it is viewed as a partisan attack from a vast right-wing conspiracy.
Two wrongs do not make a right. Exampling Fox News or any other media’s lack of integrity does not validate the actions of this site. If you kill your gardener and I kill my gardener, it doesn’t make your actions any less murderous because I did so as well.
When you are preparing a story on a political figure that alleges the candidate plagiarized his speech material, you should contact that candidate to get their side of the story. This is also true when you’re writing a story about someone like Condi Rice and making claims from anonymous sources about her aspirations for the office of VP.
When posting a retraction the false information should be removed from the site. I commend you for posting the correction, but the author left the invalid information along with a hint at a conspiracy theory in which it was alleged the original McCain speech somehow magically appeared on the web after the story broke.
A quick role reversal might help you to see that this has less to do with partisan politics, and more to do with core journalism principles. If this had been your favorite candidate or a relative, you would have hoped the reporter would have thoroughly research the story before posting such conjecture.
I urge you do drop the self righteous attitude and examine what went wrong today. If your primary goal is to bring more people into the fold and introduce them to your progressive ideology then it would behove you to find your journalistic integrity before its too late.

If the Bush administration made a similar mistake, they’d classify it so that no one could learn about it. This is one of the wonderful differences between the left and the right.
March 29th, 2008 at 12:54 am“The actions we took in the wake of our mistake demonstrate this site’s commitment to maintaining credibility and transparency.”
An admirable goal and claim. Unfortunately, it is belied by the fact that ThinkProgress has yet to acknowledge its error of March 17 when it embarrassingly confused Ayman al-Zawahiri with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi AND its inaccurate reporting of Eric Alterman’s erroneous claim that only two newspapers reported information regarding the 4000th US military death in Iraq.
Until ThinkProgress acknowledges and corrects these other egregious errors, its claim that it has a “commitment to maintaining credibility and transparency” ring hollow.
March 29th, 2008 at 1:03 amkaty: mutual, get off your self-righteous, sanctimonious, fake soapbox…“what went wrong” happened YESterday… TP’s taken care of it… without your help.
If this problem has been taken care of, why has the same reporter made the same mistakes today? The Condi Rice story used anonymous sources and never contact Miss Rice to confirm her side of the story. Instead, the author posted conjecture about Condi’s motivations for the office of vice president.
This is going to be a reoccuring theme I fear.
