Letter: Let an Iraq war vet pitch at Nationals game.

In today’s Washington Post, one reader writes in and objects to the fact that President Bush has been given the honor of throwing the first ceremonial pitch at tomorrow’s Washington Nationals game:

Why is President Bush, and not an Iraq war veteran, throwing out the first pitch at Nationals Park [Sports, March 28]?

The veteran is far more deserving of the first-pitch honor than the president is.

Agree about 1 million percent. A wounded veteran?

  2. moondancer Says:

I agree. Why let a war criminal have the honor when any random vet is more deserving. In fact any random deserter is more deserving.

  3. Nevar Says:

    Dear George:

    You need relief.
    Leave the mound.

    Sincerely,
    the American people

  4. Zooey Says:

The Chimp should be ashamed to show his face in public, and shame on the Washington Nationals for allowing him to throw the first pitch.

  5. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I saw the funniest thing on Countdown last night. It was the wife of an owner of a baseball team throwing the first ball out in the stadium that had been renamed for the owner. She literally threw the ball on the ground. It was hysterical.

It would be awesome for a Vet to throw the first ball. I wonder if Bush is going to be booed again when he comes out on the field. That would be worth it.

  6. christopher wiwi Says:

I say have an Iraq Vet be in the batters box and he will charge the mound and pummel the CHIMP, just a thought.

  7. texaslady Says:

Why is bush offered any honors ? Oh thats right he is "carrying the burden of the war, not our military." Per Cheney. Bush must have paid someone off, again.

  8. Witch1 Says:

Vision's of old movie's dance in my head...You all remember the old Roman kind where a slave is thrown into the stadium and every one throw's stone's or maybe turn's the hungry lion's loose...Hummmm.. That would be the most fitting way to start off the game's of this season....Blessings

  9. WaltTheMan Says:

The bubble patrol will try to screen the crowd and insure that only neocoms are allowed to the game.

  10. WaltTheMan Says:

    neocoms s/b neocons, sorry.

  11. RUCerious Says:

Why are they even allowing this perp into the stadium? The only mound he deserves is an enormous mound of elephant crap.
    For lunch.

  12. Buckie Boy Says:

Have the Vet stand on top of Bush to throw the first pitch. Or maybe have the Vet throw rotten vegetables at Bush. Either way I would prefer rather than Bush limp wristing and tainting the first pitch with his stench.

  13. RUCerious Says:

Whew, Walt for a minute there I thought we had neo-commies.

George W. Bush is suffering from another severe case of premature Iraq elation. That's the inescapable diagnosis after a week which featured sunny statements from the President even as Baghdad and Basra descended into chaos.

Five years after "mission accomplished," Bush is now portraying setbacks as proof of success and escalating violence as a sign of a healthy democracy.

When this guy gets booed loudly, it should be the lead story on everyone's sportscast. Just roll tape with sound up!!!! No reporter voice-over. Just let the natural sound define the moment.

Thanks to the rich man's affirmative action, you know that legacy BS, we are suffering under the worst president's administration. FUNNY how you have no problem with unqualified white guys getting into high positions of power through cronyism, something this administration is quite knowledged in...

Can't have Cheney throw out the first ball. He threw out BOTH of his with those multiple draft deferments.

  24. Jeremy in Denver Says:

I see whiner has his panties all in a wad over Obama. Must be the latest polls once again showing him catching up and surpassing the Republican Party's chosen opponent. Isn't it sad that the Republican Party has to resort to manipulating the Democratic Primary to get what they want?

What destroys whiner's argument is the fact that it wasn't Obama (or Hillary) who chose to move Florida's election ahead of the scheduled slot in defiance of DNC rules and against a DNC direct threat of retaliation if they proceeded. Weirdly enough, it was the Republican controlled state Government who made that choice.

Again, it's sad the Republicans feel they must interfere with the Democratic Party's primary.

Finally I find it choicely ironic that whiner won't address the topic of this thread. Since both formal and informal rules state that thread hijacking is against the ToU, I have flagged all of whiner's posts on this thread. Unless whiner wants to get banned, it will start posting on topic.

I'm not holding my breath, though.

Let's see. He had his daddy get him a top spot in a gravy National Guard unit to avoid real combat during a war, then deserted when he couldn't pass the drug test; had his daddy and his cronies buy numerous businesses and drove them into bankruptcy; served as a part time Governor of a dust bowl of a state and executed more inmates than anyone before him, while allowing the states school system to deteriorate; he stole two presidential elections by disenfranchising minority voters; lied us into an illegal and unneccesary war killing or injuring hundreds of thousands of people; had his VP commit treason by outing a covert CIA agent; bankrupted the US treasury; took a vibrant economy and allowed it to slide into recession TWICE; took decades of foreign good will and caused other countries to despise us; took the first budget surplus in decades and turned it into the largest deficit in this country's history; more than doubled the national debt; presided over the greatest number of home foreclosures in the country's history; went on vacation while ignoring warnings that terrorists were about to strike the US; allowed one of America's oldest and most vibrant cities to remain in chaos and squalor for days while he took another vacation; pardoned someone convicted of obstruction of justice, allowing treason to go unpunished ; stood by while the price of gas almost tripled; cut taxes for multi-billionaires while allowing wounded Iraq veterans to live in squalor in an outdated, run-down and filthy Army hospital: allowed the US military to be decimated to a point where generals admit we could not defend the US if there were to be an attack on this country; wire tapped innocent citizens and lied about it; instituted a wide-spread policy of rendition and torture of POWs; and gutted the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the US.

Now that's a record of accomplishment to be proud of.

Oh, I'm sorry; I misunderstood. I thought you wanted Shrub's achievements....

    ...Never mind.

Ok, now back to Bush and tossing balls out . . .

  28. woodguy Says:

    Sorry about the rant, JW.

My feeling is that they should let an Iraq war vet THROW out the first ball, as well. Leave Shrub out of it completely. If he insists on going to the Olympics in China, we could use him as the torch, though.

  29. Exit Stage Left Says:

I only wish I had Washington Nationals season tickets I could cancel. This is a disgrace. He should be thrown in jail, not throwing out the first pitch.

  30. nofltwlt Says:

It would be appropriate for an Iraq war vetran to throw out the first pitch. However, it is highly unlikely that Bush will not do this. If he does he should receive the ovation he deserves - boos, jeer and hisses. It is a chance that he should be willing to take. It is a chance that game goers should not pass up. Game goers should indicate their pleasure/displeasure with Bush.

If I were Bush and had done so much harm to our nation I would expect boos and jeers. Game goers please speak your mind and do not simply pay homeage to an institution that Bush has trashed.

I am sure that if Bush was not invited to throw out the first pitch that he would destroy baseball - that's just the way he and and his goons conduct business.

  31. nofltwlt Says:

No one would have the nerve to let the president's pitch roll to the backstop and simply lay on the ground without being retrieved. But what a great statement it would be.

Can Bush risk such a scenario?
