This past week, on the evening of March 23rd, this nation marked a sad milestone: the 4,000th U.S. soldier who died in Iraq. ThinkProgress posted an entry about this event that elicited nearly 200 comments. The next day, Washington D.C.’s local NBC affiliate — NBC4 — reported on some of the reactions from our comments thread. Here are the comments that NBC cited:

A sad, horrific mark, but no sadder or more horrific than the poor soldier who will be 4,001, 4,002, 4,003, 4,004……..5,000, etc.
spencers mom wrote:
This news breaks my heart. Each of these 4,000 people died trying to do his/her job, but each and everyone of them gave their lives for a cause that never should have been pursued.
Krazny wrote:
This goes far beyond 4,000 damaged families. In the US alone there are another 30,000 or so damaged families of war wounded, plus an unknown number of PTSD cases. Factor in all the missing time from home, and it starts really adding up.

Thank you to our commenters and readers for making this blog a go-to place for news and analysis.

March 29th, 2008 at 4:47 pmHey TRoS, we must be in the “front row”! Congrats TP and to all the great posters here.
March 29th, 2008 at 4:50 pmNBC knows where to look for the finest posters.
March 29th, 2008 at 4:55 pmCongrats to all of the TP commenters who contributed to that and every thread here at TP. Thanks to those who were cited by the MSM for their thoughtful, sensitive comments on that sad occasion.
Not surprisingly that Kilo’s disgusting performance on that same thread was mercifully ignored.
March 29th, 2008 at 4:56 pmYou’re just lucky they picked out the good quotes. With all the “concerned trolls” here these days, sooner or later one of their plants are going to get out into the news.
So, TP, is this the reason why you seem to be stepping up your troll enforcement? If so, it’s a good thing although you still have a long way to go. You will never solve the problem until you start banning people by their IP address. You ban a troll now and they are back up and running with a new moniker within 15 minutes.
March 29th, 2008 at 4:59 pmon the evening of March 23rd, this nation marked a sad milestone: the 4,000th U.S. soldier who died in Iraq.

March 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pmWell done! Good to see this site getting more attention.
I can only hope this will bump TP up higher than 10 on Family Security Matters’s 2008 “The Ten Most Dangerous Organizations in America” list.

You too, Llama Boy! ‘N Bilbo ‘n had enough… TP RULES!
March 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pmThe saddest part is that these soldiers died for absolutely nothing and killed for even less. How many more?
March 29th, 2008 at 5:24 pmNice work.
March 29th, 2008 at 5:25 pminteresting how they left out the “5000″ by blue slate bob…both by the announcer and in the graphic on screen.
March 29th, 2008 at 5:35 pmI guess they didn’t want to slam the Bushie’s too hard by indicating that this war will being going on long enough to see that obscene number.
hussein toasterhead, I second that. And thanks for resurrecting the FSM Top 10. It’s one of my favorite wingnut performances of the past ten years.
I especially love how they consider “colleges and universities” to be the second most dangerous institution in America. They’re exactly right. We simpy cannot abide an educated populace.
March 29th, 2008 at 5:49 pmThe number is sad. 4000 of our bravest. If we pull out now how many Iraqis will die? Who will protect the children? Who will stop the rapes?
March 29th, 2008 at 5:52 pmIf we pull out now how many Iraqis will die? Who will protect the children? Who will stop the rapes?
Pulling out NOW is impossible. But what if we pull out in 6 months, or a year, or two years, or five years???
What evidence is there that Iraqi’s will be any safer then?
We need a Date certain Timetable for and END to the Iraqi Occupation, and a well thought out plan to achieve this goal.
This will diffuse the insurgency’s arguments that we want a Permanent occupation of their country. And it will focus the Minds of the Waring factions in Iraq to work things out themselves.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:15 pmThats a tired old canard wintermd, even Bush has said that you cannot have a victory without an exit plan, besides that what we are doing is nation building a timetable, as the latest violonece shows, would have changed nothing because the Basra battle is about controlling the oil, not US timelines.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:29 pmIf only they had acknowledged some of our more insightful folks. I assume you agree wintermd.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:31 pmWOO HOO!!!
KUDOS ALL ‘ROUND!
March 29th, 2008 at 6:33 pmrighties cheer and celebrate the deaths of our troops, and the loss of our wars. how disgustingly treasonous.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:46 pmProfuse thanks to posters like blue state bob, spencer’s mom (double yea! for you) and last but certainly not the least, Krazny, for elucidating so succinctly (sans snark or too many big words) what so many of us here all feel.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:57 pmwintermd:
“…never mind, I will GOOGLE up a timetable…”
LOL
March 29th, 2008 at 7:00 pmIt’s just so funny when you say it, I have this visual of you, on your knees, driving the big white bus.
Please stay wintermd.
March 29th, 2008 at 7:13 pmCongrats TP!
Bluestatebob, Spenser’s Mom, Karzney, I hope you get your Soros bonus soon!
March 29th, 2008 at 7:39 pmUmmm…when did TP start reviewing posts when they were submitted? I tried to post a simple message 25 minutes ago and on my end it still says “your comment is awaiting moderation.”

March 29th, 2008 at 7:46 pmAnd yet my post just now at 7:45p appears instantly. Weird.
March 29th, 2008 at 7:47 pmHi progressinourminds.
March 29th, 2008 at 7:48 pmCongrats, people.
Krazny, well done.
March 29th, 2008 at 10:07 pmSorry, TP. I said a naughty word. **eyes rolling**
Hey TP, what’s with all the dissatisfied and low intelligence trolls?
You’re famous now, invest!
March 29th, 2008 at 10:10 pmCongratulations on the recognition, everyone.
March 30th, 2008 at 12:16 am4,000 dead of our own troops. 30,000 injuried, at least half of which are permanent and long term, life altering injuries. But let’s not forget the Iraqi people that have died in this fruitless war as well. Especially the children.
