I immediately thought of Herbert Hoover’s treasury secretary. Liquidate farmers, you can’t do this. This is a financial crisis. You’ve got to do something, and that does include helping homeowners who were sucked in a little different if Alan Greenspan said you should all take out adjustable rate mortgages.

It would be a little different if the administration said housing prices are going up. If they hadn’t said there’s no bubble. It’s a national disaster in effect. It’s like compaq tc4400 battery, compaq hstnnib12 battery Katrina. To say, oh, let people suffer, saying let those people who made the mistake of staying in New Orleans suffer.

Backup, for the fourth time, I’ll ask you:

Why does poverty and unemployment increase with every Republican presidency and decrease with every Democratic presidency?

Why did Clinton create THREE TIMES as many jobs as W?

Zooey. You’re cool. But, neither of us will grow any further if we take the tact that we will only entertain information that is in accord with what we already believe.

Ah. Now I'm "stung" by your reproach. I'm glad you think so much of yourself, cuz lord knows somebody ought to.

You know what? If you need to know this shit, go look it up yourself. Look at the god damned census, it's all right there. Poverty and hunger shouldn't exist in this country, but it does to a surprising degree. Maybe you should ask yourself why that's ok with you.

July. I read your 60 minutes link. I’m opening up on the universal healthcare need.

I’m still skeptical on the conditions of the poor, those not related to healthcare

Here is some more info for you:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Foodstamps.jpg

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, statistics for the food stamp program are as follows[1]:
51 percent of all participants are children (18 or younger), and 65 percent of them live in single-parent households.
55 percent of food stamp households include children.
9 percent of all participants are elderly (age 60 or over).
79 percent of all benefits go to households with children, 14 percent go to households with disabled persons, and 7 percent go to households with elderly persons.
36 percent of households with children were headed by a single parent, the overwhelming majority of whom were women.
The average household size is 2.3 persons.
The average gross monthly income per food stamp household is $640.
41 percent of participants are white; 36 percent are African-American, non-Hispanic; 18 percent are Hispanic; 3 percent are Asian, 2 percent are Native American, and 1 percent are of unknown race or ethnicity.

Concentrate on this one:
The average gross monthly income per food stamp household is $640. This is not a lot of money for folks living in the US, where it cost more to live. Since this is the average, for some folks getting $640 would be like getting a raise.

The median income for states in the US (this is the middle of the group) for the time period listed in the picture can be found here:

http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/income/income04/statemhi.html

The Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) program produces monthly data on changes in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services can be found here:

Zooey. First you tell me to google to find the information. Now, it sounds like you want me to keep googling until I find 'credible' information. The information that matches your view.

You've got this down.

Although you may not find heritage credible - how much could they have manipulated the census data? It's in the report. You should check it out. The highly partisan heritage foundation information should be easy to refute.

Is it possible that you don't know as much as you think you do about America's poor? And perhaps the issue has been politicized and exaggerated? Maybe that's why the issue has gotten so little play. Even from democrats during a democratic primary.

Maybe you should start googling.

I off my soapbox. I think you're all good people, with different views on some issues. I've got to go, but sincere peace and love. No really. :)

Captain, you want the information, you want to know about the poor in America -- go find out. Like I said before, you're not going to accept anything any of us says, so find out for yourself. But be smart about it. Pay attention to your sources.

If you want to learn like you say, prove it, and go learn.

Why can't they just do a quick search and figure out who they're getting their information from? It literally takes seconds to find out. But no, they have to do their best sheep imitation and accept the first thing they find.

ralph. no one here will present me with significant information to the contrary. when you search for information on the condition of america's poor - the heritage study comes up first. There is a huge amount of data pulled from the census, you should read it, make up your own mind, instead of dismissing anything that upsets your worldview.

If I used your logic that the information is not credible because it's from heritage, it would be similar to me telling you - how can you believe this information - it comes from thinkprogress.

Quit being so lazy and defend your assertions. I've defended mine.

Is it possible for someone to be reasonable if they only forward information that placates your sensibilities? I am amazed that you somehow think that anyone who thinks differently than you is full of 'it'. Just a little reminder, in the last presidental election, there were about 60 million people that voted in opposition to the general sentiments you find here. Even if democrats reclaim the white house, mine is probably not the isolated mindset you think it is. By being perplexed, it's making me think you're only being exposed to one point of view. I'm trying to better understand your views, to hopefully become more enlightened. You, on the other hand, must already have it all figured out.

If you want to treat my posts as conspiratorial, have at it. I really don't get it but, I'm confident I won't convince you otherwise.

So, if you want, dispute the claims of the heritage report and the census data, or if you can't find credible information to refute them, just leave it unanswered.

Zooey. I checked out your links. Thanks.

I also took your advice and googled ‘conditions for America’s poor’.

This was at the top of the search results:

http://www.heritage.org/Research/welfare/bg2064.cfm

See, Cap'n this is exactly what i mean. You posting a link from the Heritage Foundation as an authority on the condition of America's poor.

Was that an attempt to explain why you're so ignorant on the subject? Because the Heritage Foundation link comes up when you try to research it?

You have to realize that the Heritage Foundation carries only a little bity more credibility around here than Bill O'Reilly, yet you offer a Heritage Foundation report as compelling evidence?

This is one more reason why I think you're full of shit when you present yourself as a reasonable conservative, searching for information.

I think it's possible that you may think that everyone has or should come to the same conclusions that you have, but please consider the link and understand that my skeptism of the level of poverty we have in the U.S. is based on more than 'not wanting to know'. Despite the denials here, there is conflicting information. I was hoping I could benefit if someone here had already done the research, but apparently, I'm better off googling.

barfly,

People like the Captain don't know about this stuff because they don't want to know it. The won't hear it from anyone, they have to find it for themselves -- if they really care.
