Lieberman Falsely Claims McCain Doesn’t Support Privatization Of Social Security

On ABC’s This Week today, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) falsely claimed that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “is not for the private accounts to take the place of social security.” “He’s for what Bill Clinton used to call Social Security plus,” said Lieberman.

Lieberman didn’t disagree, however, when host George Stephanopoulos pointed out that McCain had “disputed that in the Wall Street Journal” recently. Instead, he brushed the contradiction aside and changed the subject.

Watch it:

As Stephanopoulos noted, McCain has abandoned his initial Social Security plan, which called for “supplementing the current Social Security system with personal accounts,” in order to embrace President Bush’s failed effort to replace the system with private accounts. “I believe that private savings accounts are a part of” Social Security reform “along the lines that President Bush proposed,” McCain told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month.

Asked about the contradiction between his website and his own statements, McCain said he would “correct any policy paper that I’ve put out.” As of today, however, his website still hasn’t been changed to reflect his embrace of Bush:

mccainssweb.jpg

In 2005, Lieberman called the idea of creating private accounts “a very risky thing to do.” But now, he appears willing to take that risk in order to help John McCain keep an indefinite U.S. military presence in Iraq.

Digg It!

Update Bill Scher has posted video of John McCain specifically supporting the "privatization" of Social Security in 2004. Watch it here.

“Privatizing” (what I call PROFITIZING) Social Security is an oxymoron.

There will be no more Social Security if it is “privatized.”

LIEberman lies all the time. Remember he promised Connecticut he wanted the war over as soon as possible.

  3. overlap says:

Liberals never falsely claim anything. The entire conservative platform is about 100% lying about everything – so they can get poor white voters to vote against their interests and enable the GOP rape the treasury and enrich the wealthy.

    Period.

  4. Fred says:

Americans have already voiced thier opinion on tampering with Social Security. The best thing the republicans can do to help the democrats is keep talking like this……

  5. williamf says:

Just leave social security alone. The ideological discord around it fails to change the basic fact that it is a good program for seniors and the disabled. What elitist politicians should know is that down at the level of the average citizen, social security is a lifesaver. The government acts as if the money they get belongs to them. The money, to a great extent, for the program and the finances of the government came from those who need the social security plan. For those who are indigent, the program can provide some help and dignity. Now, these are basic things that I think the religious would agree are things that Jesus would do.

No, everything Lieberman is doing these days is an attempt to increase his bona fide with the Republicans. He realizes that he will have no chance being re-elected as an Independent or a Democrat, so I believe he is preparing to actually do what he did in spirit a long time ago, become a Republican.

Neither President Bush nor Senator McCain has proposed anything to “take the place of” Social Security. Why would this website lie so blatantly? Do they believe their usual reader is an idiot?

  12. stewarjt says:

#9. That is exactly what private accounts are proposed by the right wing think tanks and their lemmings. They are supposed to take the place of Social Security. “Reforming” Social Security with private accounts means nothing less than destroying the most successful government anti-poverty program ever. Anyone who wants to see this can…and the opposite.

  13. barfly says:

Neither President Bush nor Senator McCain has proposed anything to “take the place of” Social Security.

Baloney. Fropm the White House website:

Personal accounts would be entirely voluntary.
The money would go into a conservative mix of bond and stock funds that would have the opportunity to earn a higher rate of return than anything the current system could provide.
A young person who earns an average of $35,000 a year over his or her career would have nearly a quarter million dollars saved in his or her own account upon retirement.
That savings would provide a nest egg to supplement that worker’s traditional Social Security check, or to pass on to his or her children.
Best of all, it would replace the empty promises of the current system with real assets of ownership.

  14. StopThePropaganda says:

    Walt,

I’ve been in America, listening to fascistic propagandists like Think Progress demean their country and lie about the president. Where have you been?

  15. StopThePropaganda says:

    barfly,

“Supplement” does not mean “take the place of”. What are you, illiterate?

  16. barfly says:

    That’s “replace,” not “augment.”

  17. barfly says:

Or does “replace” have a different meaning in wingnutworld?

  18. WaltTheMan says:

    StopThePropaganda,
I have been here as well, the only difference is that I read the newspapers and follow CSPAN.

  19. barfly says:

“Supplement” does not mean “take the place of”. What are you, illiterate?

Best of all, it would replace the empty promises of the current system with real assets of ownership.

Doesn’t “replace” mean the same as “take the place of?”

    Who’s the illiterate, again?

  20. StopThePropaganda says:

It doesn’t say “replace Social Security.”

  21. barfly says:

It doesn’t say “replace Social Security.”

it would replace the empty promises of the current system with real assets of ownership.

And what is the current system?

I think it’s called Social Security, but I could be wrong – on wingnutworld.

  22. StopThePropaganda says:

The object of the verb “replace” is “promises”, not “Social Security.”

In any event, that’s a press release, not a policy proposal. Which sub-par government school failed at properly educating poor barfly there?

  23. barfly says:

Looks STP, the Bushies want to carve private accounts out of the current system, not augment it with additional funds. McCain’s previous rhetoric has been to set up private accounts outside of SSI, not by carving out a piece, and apportioning it for investment.

  24. barfly says:

The object of the verb “replace” is “promises”, not “Social Security.”

Now your just playing semantic games to make a non-existent point.

  25. StopThePropaganda says:

“Looks [sic] STP, the Bushies [sic] want to carve private accounts out of the current system…”

In other words, you were not telling the truth, and Think Progress was not telling the truth, when you, and they, said the President and McCain want private accounts “to take the place of” Social Security.”

Thanks for admitting your untruthfulness. Perhaps Think Progress will issue a correction as well.

  26. Xisithrus says:

Which sub-par government school failed at properly educating poor barfly there?

I have a better question, what expensive private Ivey league school gave Dubya a passing grade?

And where did Rove get his degree?

  27. Xisithrus says:

If you privatise Social Security it will suck the money out of peoples hands faster than Halliburton can suck up no bid contracts.

  28. StopThePropaganda says:

Letting people keep their own money sucks it out of their hands??? That makes no sense at all.

  29. Xisithrus says:

McCain, as usual, flips and flops so much I dont think anyone, even Lieberman, knows where he stands.

  30. barfly says:

In other words, you were not telling the truth, and Think Progress was not telling the truth, when you, and they, said the President and McCain want private accounts “to take the place of” Social Security.”

And predictably, the half-truths follow the semantic sillyness. What Bush wants, as I just said, is to use part of current social security benefits, thus changing the current way SSI is operated. To assert that “replace” means to replace the entire system, is a half-truth, at best, and blatant propaganda at worst. I thought you were supposed to be stopping the propaganda, not spreading it.

You’re very generous, barfly. You may be right, that STP is a newbie who thought he was better prepared than he actually was (not an uncommon phenomenon among wingnuts these days). If that were the case, he could certainly benefit from some of the many, many links to definitions of fascism. for instance, that have been posted here recently.

You strike me more as the type who just wants to screw around espousing some sort of weird agenda in order to get some attention and feel like you are somehow superior. Fascism – Where the government runs corporations.
Socialism – Where the government runs corporations.

Ah, I see the problem now. STP was either sadly misinformed, or has undiagnosed dyslexia.

Perhaps some education would be in order.

From ” Fourteen Defining Characteristics Of Fascism”

    by Dr. Lawrence Britt:

    9. Corporate Power is Protected – The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

Or perhaps our sadly misinformed friend would prefer an ideologically friendly source, conservapedia:

Fascism is at the extreme right of the political spectrum.

Fascists believe that all actions should be done for the good of the state (rather than classical liberalism, which focuses on the good of the individual). This definition expands to economic policy as well, with government and business working together for this end – this is called “corporatism.

More where that came from. Just holler when when you’re ready, STP.

  72. WaltTheMan says:

Stanley G. Payne’s Fascism: Comparison and Definition (1980) uses a lengthy itemized list of characteristics to identify fascism, including the creation of an authoritarian state; a regulated, state-integrated economic sector; fascist symbolism; anti-liberalism; anti-communism, and anti-conservatism. As the common aim of all fascist movements he sees elimination of the autonomy or, in some cases, the existence of large-scale capitalism.
    Source.

  73. barfly says:

IMHO, we’re getting an example of the heart of what is wrong with American democracy. First, we do not have a clear position statement by the candidate.

And have you seen the White House website’s “answers” for fixing SSI? They read like a total capitulation (other than raising payroll taxes) of conservative positions, just a bland “we encourage a change in the current system to meet the need of future generations, while safeguarding current retiree’s benefits, and we will work with Congress to insure the stability of this vital program for all Americans” – sort of rhetorical pablum. McCain’s in essence flying blind on this issue, since the current administration’s not issuing any instructions from the control tower.

  74. ralph the wonder llama says:

Well, I guess that settles it. In the eternal debate on whether words mean something or they don’t, STP comes down resoundingly on the side that “they don’t”.

  78. barfly says:

And to follow my last post, I think this will be a major headache for the McCain campaign. Bush has demonstrated nothing in the last few years if not his reluctance to help others politically, without getting something in return. In the coming election, Bush’s tendencies will be to keep a low profile, unless McCain offers him something, to further his – or his family’s – fortunes. McCain might offer to install Jeb in the State Department, to gain international seasoning, and perhaps to repair some of the bridges burned since the invasion and occupation of Iraq, but it would be two-edged, as Jeb would also be positioning himself for a future presidential run, and might at times wander off-message to get personal political gain, shooting McCain in the foot, to establish his own creds as a “maverick.”

My question to any of these boneheads (that includes Shrub and McShrub) is this: If you claim you don’t want to do away with Social Security (a blatant lie, well documented since the program was instituted) and your alternative is to “supplement” SS with “private accounts”, what is stopping any of you from doing that now? Isn’t there a plethora of institutional methods for doing this already, i.e. IRAs, 401ks, 401bs, etc? What is to prevent people from utilizing these “private accounts” now? These accounts are tax-free in most cases and already “supplement” Social Security. Why not leave SS in place to help those who are just scraping by right now and can’t afford the luxury of a retirement account because they have to pay $ 3.50 or more for a gallon of gas. Isn’t leaving SS as it is now and taking advantage of the current “private account” structure more of a “choice” that the Republic party supposedly advocates than killing SS and eliminating the choice of both SS and an IRA?

Someone please explain how narrowing choices gives us more.

    Just sayin’.
