Bush tried to avoid boos.

Bush tried to avoid boos.»

The AP reports:

bushbaseball4.jpg President Bush had enough to worry about - like not flubbing the first pitch in front of a crowd that might not exactly be his biggest fans anyway.

So before the game, when a couple of Atlanta Braves gave him a team jersey and suggested he wear it to throw out the first pitch at Nationals Park, Bush laughed. Uh, no thanks, guys. Might as well put on a sign that says “Boo me.”

“I’m not going to give them any excuses,” Bush said of the 40,000-plus people gathered for the opening of Washington’s gleaming baseball stadium.

Unfortunately for Bush, the fact that he refused a Braves jersey wasn’t enough to erase the eight years of his presidency. Watch the boos here.

  7. The Dogfather Says:

As one of the proud Nats fans in attendance last night who joined (and helped lead, in my section) the chorus of boos to Dumbya, I can tell you that not only were there more boos than cheers, but that us boobirds were louder and more apparent than the 23%ers who were cheering the moron. In fact, as we came up the steps from the Metro to go over to the new Nats ballpark, a few of our fellow patriots were holding up big signs urging us to “Boo Bush” — clearly that worked, and there were many people lining up to get their picture taken in front of those signs…

And BTW, Zim — he threw a knuckleball; what else could you expect from a knucklehead?

Good question. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s still relying on a curveball.

“I’m not going to give them any excuses,” Bush said

Too bad GDumbya didn’t think of that, oh, say about seven years ago.

Unfortunately, the new Nationals stadium is forever sullied by this presi-dunce who took away her virginity on her first Opening Day. Hopefully, Obama will make a much better appearance next year.

  10. Zimzone Says:

    Badmoodman & Dogfather, lol…

Too bad they didn’t let him bat. Getting plunked by a 90mph fastball would have had the new stadium rocking…

TP loses a little bit of credibility with me every time they post a headline/story like this. This example isn’t as bad as many that I’ve seen, but somewhat misleading, nonetheless. There are plenty of real stories to report on in the name of PROGRESS, such as Hillary’s lie about sniper fire.

It’s not as if there was a finite number of posts allowed during the day. If TP occasionally posts something silly (don’t even say “B****** S****s”), it’s not as if this was preventing them from also posting something more substantive.

And, really, you can’t forget about any criticism of HRC; have to go elsewhere for that.

Oh, and Vet…? It’s not like posting stories like this really deprive the TP staff of much time or bandwidth to pursue other, more serious stories. It’s a little extra nugget of TP candy, that’s all.

I agree, the Hillary sniper fire story is conspicuous by its absence, and for me deals a severe blow to her credibility. But don’t blame the Bush getting booed story for its lack of coverage.

Sure Ex, the WaPo blogger is unbiased because he says what you want to believe. You’re and embarrassment to trolls everywhere.

  50. gummitch Says:

    Here’s an “unbiased” report.

It seemed there were more cheers than boos, but not by much. He walked quickly to the mound and almost immediately, with a high delivery, threw a high fastball that would have been a ball to anyone other than Yao Ming. Acta rose to catch it, manager and president quickly shook hands and Bush was waving to the crowd as he walked back into the dugout. The crowd reaction after the pitch was decidedly mixed. Bush, back in the dugout, gave the ball to team President Stan Kasten and he went back up the tunnel. Bush smiled throughout, despite the boos.

We’re told Potus is watching the game from the owner’s box and will do ESPN commentary in the third inning. It is now bottom of first and pool is watching from what appears to be a press conference room.”

We left the game in the fifth and ended up back at the White House for the night.

My description of the crowd reaction is catching some criticism on the blogs, based on what people heard at the game or on television. You can watch for yourself on YouTube. All I can say is that I reported what I heard, which has been backed up by people at the game — they announced Bush, there was a heavy amount of cheering initially, then the booing kicked in, he threw the pitch, and there was a continued mixed reaction afterward. I was right behind home plate on the field, which I think was a good place to gauge the stadium-wide reaction. But based on where you were sitting or where the ESPN microphones were, you might have heard something different. I think I got it right, but I’ll admit it’s more an art than a science. The booing certainly intensified after the pitch.

  51. shoeless Says:

The only thing we have to fear is Bush himself.

  52. Exley Says:

Zooey, you are confused….I never claimed to be there. I did, however, watch it live on television (something you did not do) and heard for myself that there was hardly a “resounding chorus of boos” as Think(McCain Plagiarized) falsely reported, but rather a smattering of (as WaPo’s baseball blogger wrote) “a few morons booing… Most of the people acted civilized.”

    Nice try though.

  53. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Exlax and Baghdad Bob would make quite a pair….”There are no booing infidels at the ballpark. Never! They’re not even [within] 100 miles of the ballpark. They are not in any place. They hold no place in the ballpark. This is an illusion … they are trying to sell to the others an illusion.”

  54. RantingTommy Says:

add boos to the ever growing list of things that exlax fears

Why are Republicans always so freaking scared?

  55. Gregor Samsa Says:

    No, no, no.

Exley already said there were no boos. And if there were, they were few and far between, and barely audible. If you heard them, you heard what you wanted to hear, because they were not loud. And if they were loud, they were unpatriotic and disrespectful.

(Feel free to stop when you get tired of moving the goal posts)

The boobirds weren’t few and far between, they were front and center and heard loud and clear. And all of the local reporting — not flavored by bias either way — has made that point all day today.

And finally, don’t ever confuse disrespect for the idiot thieving murderer who currently holds the office with direspect for the office of the presidency. I have nothing but the highest of regard for the office of the presidency — in fact, that’s why I’m so pi$$ed about the idiot who currently holds that office, since I clearly have far more respect for the office than he does (and apparently than you do, you Bushnik-enabler you).

  100. gummitch Says:

Exley, you are thoroughly dishonest. Or, maybe, you just can’t read. The newspaper article I quoted also included this, which you ignore (you, who weren’t even there).

You see, that’s how someone honest writes. “I think I got it right, but . . .” And he obviously wasn’t sitting near the Dogfather, whose own experience you’ve ridiculed in a totally creepy manner.

And there is absolutely no conflict between “resounding boos” and “maybe there were more cheers than boos.”

It appears you’ve sidled away from last night’s assertion that the boos were “barely audible”, which is good, because that was obviously a load of tosh that not even you could continue to pretend was real.

  101. RantingTommy Says:

  103. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

If Exley could report what happened he would have said Bush threw a fast ball on the inside corner, then outran the pitch to the batter’s box and hit a line drive deep into left field, which he also outran and with an athletic leap caught off the wall. And all to the roaring cheers of the fans and admirers, with the yells of “Bush” being misheard as “boo”.

Sooooo, watching it live makes your interpretation correct (and listening to recordings less accurate). But I watched the game live, too, Exley so I guess we cancel each other out. That leaves the single commenter who must be correct because he agrees with you, versus the actual reporter who noted that the boos might be less than the cheers (from where he sat), but were clearly audible.

Law enforcement officials have linked the surprising low attendance on the mysterious disappearance of thousands of Washington National fans in the days shortly after President Bush delivered the first pitch on opening night.

(Feel free to stop when you get tired of moving the goal posts)

Check out last night’s post about the booing. Exley and Straight Talk got all twisted up. In the comments, #251 ST actually blames the National’s JACKET for the booing. I set him straight in comment #262. Must have been the jacket. Yeah, that’s it, yeah. Too funny.

    Woodguy,

Please review what I wrote again. As with Clive Owens’ character, Dalton Russell, in “Inside Man:”

‘Pay strict attention to what I say because I choose my words carefully.’

I never once said there were no boos. (If anyone can find a posting in which I said there were no boos, please re-post it here)….

What I wrote last night at Posting #4 was:

“Anyone watching the game on ESPN (and even on this YouTube clip) knows that Bush was not booed loudly. In fact, the ovation was quite rousing when he threw the ball from the top of the mound to Acta…As ESPN’s Jon Miller said, many presidents have thrown out the ceremoninal [sic] first pitch over the years, but none have done it better than Dubya!”

My account was corroborated by an MLB.com reporter who wrote:

“Bush then gets a roar from the sellout crowd when throwing the pitch to Nats manager Manny Acta, a little high, but a good fastball nonetheless.”

Ah , I don’t care about whom the jackass roots for concerning professional athletics ; it’s his dishonesty (like that of his retarded simian hero) that is really the issue.

And the fact he can so flippantly accuse TP of “lying” , while that’s all his hero does anyway , compounded with his own dishonesty of claiming “very few” individuals were booing Chimpy (rightfully) last evening.

Well , unless the twit believes about 30 , 000 + people is equivalent to a “few individuals”…………….

  144. misshusseinmolly Says:

Good heavens! THIS is worth a thread of 100+ posts? Arguing over how many boos there were for Bush? Assuming that one side or the other of you “wins”, what does this prove?

FACT: There were some boos. There were also some cheers. The balance between the two is up for debate, and SOME people apparently feel earth hangs in the balance until this is decided.

FACT: The announcers at the game did not acknowledge the boos.

FACT: Many mainstream media are reporting that there were boos mixed with cheers. Associated Press: “He was greeted by plenty of loud jeers, but also determined cheers, as if the fans in both camps were trying to outduel each other.” ESPN: “There was a mixture of boos and cheers for Bush.” Reuters: “…as he trotted onto the field amid a chorus of cheers and boos from the sold-out crowd.” Fox News: “To a mix of cheers and jeers, President George W. Bush opened baseball’s newest stadium Sunday night with a ceremonial first pitch.” And that’s just a sampling.

FACT: George W. Bush’s approval ratings are low, and have been for some time. He is NOT a well-liked president. Claiming that there was no booing, or that there were very few boos, won’t change that.

If I had been at the game, I would not have booed. Not because I’m a Bush supporter, but because I was brought up not to be rude. I feel certain there were like-minded people in that crowd, so it would be inaccurate to claim some sort of mandate from the people if it turned out the cheers measured more decibels than the boos. But I am mostly agog that this has gotten to be some sort of p!ssing contest.

“What has happened is that with passions cooled and with some distance from the actual event, people’s perspective has been restored and they have stopped hearing what they wanted to hear.”

As Marie’s and JaneaneTheAcerbicGoblin’s comments clearly show is that they now acknowledge that there was “no resounding chorus of boos.” Of course, disappointed that their initial beliefs (fed,in part, to ThinkProgress’ dishonest reporting) that Bush received a “resounding chorus of boos” turned out to be false, they have resorted to conspiracy theories, alleging with no basis that the tapes have been “scrubbed,” when the simpler, and by far, more plausiable explanation is that with the perspective of time and distance from the game last night, they now realized that last night they were only hearing what they wanted to hear.
