Military report: secretly ‘recruit or hire bloggers.’

Noah Shachtman at Danger Room finds a 2006 report written for U.S. Special Operations Command that suggests ways the military should deal with the blogosphere. One suggestion is for the military to hire bloggers to “pass the U.S. message“:

Information strategists can consider clandestinely recruiting or hiring prominent bloggers or other persons of prominence…to pass the U.S. message. … On the other hand, such operations can have a blowback effect, as witnessed by the public reaction following revelations that the U.S. military had paid journalists to publish stories in the Iraqi press under their own names. People do not like to be deceived, and the price of being exposed is lost credibility and trust.

An alternative strategy is to “make” a blog and blogger. The process of boosting the blog to a position of influence could take some time, however, and depending on the person running the blog, may impose a significant educational burden, in terms of cultural and linguistic training before the blog could be put online to any useful effect. Still, there are people in the military today who like to blog.

Man, they really need to raise their recruiting standards, if our trolls are any indication.

As a bonus, here is my “patriotic” article now: Onward christian soldiers to Iran (and then Syria yupee!), it is what god would want!

  4. fletc3her says:

Bingo! I think we see the fruits of this labor here in these message boards! Finally, we know the source of the trolls. Not just right wing “think”-tanks, but our tax dollars at work.

Are they talking about the US or Iraq?

I mean, the cultural and linguistic level of your average Bush cultist in English is already poor enough; if the trolls at ThinkProgress are any guide. I can only imagine what they would sound like in Arabic.

Apparently Michelle Malkin, Rush Limpbaugh, O’Hanlon, etc etc etc are too stealthy for the military, and have gotten under the radar.

  8. Zooey says:

    Yeah, I’ll “pass” your message…

  9. Fool Zero says:

    to pass the U.S. message

I wonder which “U.S. message” or messages they’re referring to — that there were, so, WMDs in Iraq? That the war is going to be self-financing after all? That the troops aren’t overstretched and just lo-o-ove going back to Iraq for more tours? That despite the polls, a majority of the voting public really does want us to wade deeper into the quagmire?

(From the Wikipedia article on the agency formerly known as the Office of Strategic Influence):

[I]n November 2002, Rumsfeld stated in an interview that only the name of the office was abolished, that it still exists and continues to fulfill its original intended purposes.

    Do tell!

  10. Gregor Samsa says:

And what makes them think anyone would buy what they sell, this late into the game?

What would they say? That Iraqis should be grateful the Bush administration has reduced their country to rubble?

That Pres Bush actually cares for them and their collective fate? That the WMD were found?

Yeah, Iraqis are going to drink that kool-aid…

Let me just say the suggestions were, in fact, put into use. Several times by some rather well-known wingnut blogs — he couldn’t say enough about how LGF, Jawa, and several others would put out pretty much anything the DoD sent without question.

The reason he said he reached out to them was because of the Bush AWOL files. They (the military) were all “very impressed with the work they did on that one.”

  58. fletc3her says:

Real Progressive [sic] is *so* defensive they must be on the payroll.

It reminds me of the Pentagon channel which was launched around the same time they started the clandestine blogger program. The Pentagon channel was created because the damn hippies have three C-SPAN channels to get their message out, but the Pentagon doesn’t have its own channel for press conferences. Sure, they are carried live on C-SPAN most of the time, but that’s not enough. So, we get an entire channel devoted to the Pentagon. Unfortunately, most of what the Pentagon does is private, while most of what the Congress does is public. So, there really is nothing to air except for the occasional press conference… Thus we have a channel which airs 23 hours a day of propaganda films and one hour a day of press briefing. Your tax dollars at work. Why have three channels when you can have four at twice the price?!

How Straussian of them. The movement runs strong in the neocons and military. Promote the ‘needed American’ message, true or not, for the good of the country. It is fair warning that despite a Progressive comeback on the horizon, the forces that brought us Reagan, Bush, Cheney, Wolfy and Rumsfeld will not go quietly into the night.

No fear, I am buying spools of rope every day. I am stuck in a quanry though, Should it hemp or nylon? Please take my poll.

Nahhh, that just doesn’t fit the current y’all are terrorist sympathizers strategy. Logic and reason were never the drivers in this train wreck. Rage and hatred were.

Bush could have united the world against Al Queda but chose the low road instead, the one that was supposed to get Republicans (and their corporate constituents) Rove’s permanent majority. It was a sad example of the dumbing down of our population.

I used to vote Republican too. For the candidate not the party. I voted for Bob Michael, Ray LaHood, George Ryan (yeah I know, the criminal), ect, ect. Of course Illinois Republicans are a bit different from those in other areas of the country. But they rolled over and played Bush’s game too with nary a peep. Well, maybe one or two peeps from LaHood, but that stopped altogether.

I learned my lesson, that’s for sure.
