On MSNBC’s Hardball last night, while discussing Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) recent campaign stop at a Pennsylvania bowling alley, host Chris Matthews broadly generalized about African-Americans when he said to MSNBC political analyst Michelle Bernard, “You know, Michelle — and this gets very ethnic, but the fact that he’s good at basketball doesn’t surprise anybody.” “But the fact that he’s that terrible at bowling does make you wonder,” added Matthews. Later, Matthews said Obama’s bowling “form” wasn’t “the most macho.” Watch it:
Also on MSNBC earlier in the day, Joe Scarborough called Obama’s bowling performance both “dainty” and “prissy.”

This bowling bit won’t hurt Obama. After all, even good bowlers were crappy bowlers at some point in their lives.
So we all can sympathize.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:51 amyeah, tweety has an oxygen problem… the problem is he sucks republican cock like it was life giving oxygen.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:54 amMatthews needs a lobotomy and and some nip ‘n’ tuck on his mouth.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:56 amAnd Matthews can’t jump, either!
April 1st, 2008 at 9:57 am“But the fact that he’s that terrible at bowling does make you wonder,”
Please excuse my ignorance, but wtf am I supposed to be wondering about because Obama happens to be a crappy bowler?
When I first started bowling in leagues, I think I had an average of 100. After many years of bowling, I average 170.
Again, wtf am I supposed to be wondering about?
April 1st, 2008 at 9:58 amGet used to this. There will even be people who are surprised that Obama eats with a knife and fork and not with his hands. And I am bracing myself for all of the “fried chicken and watermelon” jokes that will abound once Obama is officially the nominee.
Besides…. what does Obama’s skill at basketball or lack of skill at bowling have to do with his ability to be our president? NOTHING. Quite frankly, if he weren’t an African-American it would probably have never come up.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:58 amI thought the bowling scene was a good one for Obama - it showed he doesn’t have a problem with being less than perfect in public — as if bowling is a criterion as a qualification to be president. He poked fun at himself needing bowling tips from an eight year old - sort of endearing if you ask me.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:58 amI think Matthews is obsessed with man crushes, Scarborough is eager to find some way to criticize Obama for not being “manly” — as if bowling was a measurement for that.
Matthews comments could be construed as stereotypically racist, but mostly I construe them as Matthews being stupidly insensitive and irrelevant.
God I wish that MSNBC would get rid of Matthews. I can’t believe that anyone watches him. I try every once in a while but I find it so uncomfortable I have to change channels. Now if they would replace him with Rachael Maddow or David Schuster, I would be a happy camper!
April 1st, 2008 at 9:58 amI turn off MSNBC when Matthews starts in on this crap. It’s ugly watching him have diarrhea of the mouth regarding Obama (or Clinton for that matter), & his man love for McCain just creeps me out.
April 1st, 2008 at 9:59 amIs this idiot ever embarrassed by his own words?

April 1st, 2008 at 10:00 amso, in order to be a macho man or a man’s man, you have to be a good bowler?
What sh!t!
April 1st, 2008 at 10:01 amAmazing. Obama went from “is he black enough?” to a muslim to a ni@@er.

But, but….I thought he should be grateful because he is black since some people think that is the only reason why he is a presidential candidate.
I heard someone say that Barak has it made as a presidential candidate because:
1) He’s black
2) He grew up without a father
3) He has a funny middle name
4) He has big ears
Those all sound like such assets for a presidential candidate. Obama should be so grateful.
BTW, the person who said this was joking, of course.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:02 amCool, let’s have a Lebowski/Munson ticket.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:07 amDead Beat George has a problem with riding his training wheel bic,now that’s news that Matthews should be showing and talking about. He is a Dead Beat like AWOL George.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:07 amBowling: a sport in which one plays against themselves usually involving one or more types of alcoholic beverages. Generally played with people who think bowling is exercise.
Basketball: a physically and mentally demanding sport played in teams against other teams. Only the fringes of those soon to enter the bowling leagues will invlove alcoholic beverages.
Bowling: self absorbed
Basketball: team driven.
Being bad at bowling just doesn’t rank with me.
April 1st, 2008 at 10:08 amThis is just silly. Let’s stop concerning ourselves with someone else’s commentary on how Obama bowls. We need to concern ourselves with important issues like, ending the American reign of terror. We all know the issues we face and I believe we need to combat those and not this silliness.

April 1st, 2008 at 11:27 amI recall someone (it may have been someone on TPM) suggesting that Mr. Matthews was in dire need of a vacation - that he’s not necessarily (always) bad or inept, but more seriously burnt-out from an exhausting primary season.
April 1st, 2008 at 11:27 amI, for one, don’t want a “macho” President. We’ve had enough “machismo” in the past seven years to last for 50 years. Tweety’s comments about Obama’s “being good at basketball doesn’t surprise anybody” reminded me of comments about Bird and Johnson made by sports pundits 29 years ago. Johnson, a black player, was constantly praised for being “naturally gifted”. Bird, a white player, was lauded for his “discipline”. Now, does anybody truly believe that Johnson didn’t spend as many hours perfecting his layup and his hook shot as Bird did?
Anyone who paid attention to both players could see that they were both awesome stars in the game, and extremely good at what they did. And like almost all world-class athletes, both had natural talent they honed into perfection with years and years of practice, discipline, and focus. So why was the myth perpetuated that one was all natural talent and the other was all hard work? Skin color?

April 1st, 2008 at 1:14 pmAnd noone is surprised about Matthews sharp observations. He knows what hes talking about
Chris Matthews:
“The biggest story of modern Third World history if Obama wins the American Presidental caucus in Iowa.”
Because anyone who understands the Third World knows that the most important thing to these Third World people is that US elects a black President with a “Third World” name.
April 1st, 2008 at 1:18 pmHi jackball
April 1st, 2008 at 1:42 pmChris Matthews tries to beat the land speed record for words per minute. Shut up and listen to people for a change. He answers his own questions before giving anyone a chance. Hey Chris if you want to do a monologue, get yourself a brickwall background, a stool and a mic. Otherwise, sit back and try and learn something from the people you invite on your show!
Oh, and what’s up with FAN OF MAN (response #2)? Is it necessary to use foul language on this site? Let’s not stoop so low, okay?

“Basketball comment is yet more blatant stereotyped racism coming from the left.”
– WHAT basketball comment? Matthews’? He’s hardly “from the left.” If you are talking about a comment from another TP poster, please reference who it was and the time of the post.
“This campaign has clearly shown the racist underbelly of liberals.”
– Unless you can elaborate on that with some specific evidence, this is an empty comment. Furthermore, what does this have to do with Tweety?
“No surprise, there’s a long racist history in the DNC.”
– It’s true that well over a century ago, Republicans were the progressives and Democrats were the mentally arthritic we-fear-change crowd. The parties have since switched positions, yet you wingnuts still like to bash Democrats for anti-Reconstruction positions of the 19th century.
“But don’t let the facts get in the way.”
April 1st, 2008 at 2:26 pm– How in the world could “facts get in the way” when you have failed to provide any?
Nice take-down, missmolly. Surgical and precise.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:47 pmEvery time Tweety talks, he lets out his ignorance more and more. I hope Abrams’ shows, “The Verdict” and “Bush Justice” put Tweety’s “HardBalls” out of business.

You are forgetting that most Democrat lawmakers were opposed to the Civil Rights laws passed in the 1960’s which passed despite their vigorous opposition. And don’t give me that tired old lie that most “Dixiecrats” then switched parties, becuase the cold hard facts are that most remained with the Democratic party.
________________________________________
“MOST Democrat (sic) lawmakers”? Wrong. If that was true, the civil rights laws would never have passed at all. Only the Democrats from southern states opposed the bills (also all Republicans from southern states). Democrats from states in the northeast, the midwest, and the west supported civil rights overwhelmingly — and in greater numbers than did the Republicans from these states.
And no — I’m not going to say that Democrats from southern states switched parties overnight en masse. They didn’t. Over the years, some did (Strom Thurmond was a good example) — but most stayed with the Democratic party until they retired or got defeated for re-election by a Republican. Many of these Republicans started out as Democrats, but switched parties before running for office (Jesse Helms and Trent Lott are good examples). Most Southern states are now overwhelmingly Republican, both in population and in representation. This shift really began with the 1964 election, when conservative Republican Goldwater ONLY carried southern states (plus his own).
Now, you can comb through ancient history all you want, and you can cherry-pick quotes all you want, but do you REALLY think that you are going to get anyone here to believe that the Democratic Party is more racist than the Republicans?

What’s happening. Winning hearts and minds?
April 1st, 2008 at 6:13 pmWe have to face the race issue. It’s so in our DNA by now… Obama’s speech, his masterful spot-on speech, shows us the way. I’m white and female and in the 60+ set now, and I believe he can help us all make the next step we have to take to “get over it,” meaning the centuries of programming that have made whites fear blacks, and made blacks despise whites.
It’s time we faced this.
April 1st, 2008 at 6:36 pmI’d like to see Obama golf, I bet he’s a natural
April 1st, 2008 at 7:15 pmYeah, those damn liberals almost blocked the civil rights bill in the 60’s; I remember it well. If it hadn’t been pushed by the Republic Party it probably would never have passed.
So how did John McShrub vote on the bill to make MLK’s birthday a national holiday?
Get real and/or educated…oh, never mind.
Next.
April 1st, 2008 at 7:46 pmJackoff @ 111,
When you’re tired of pissing in the wind, go piss up a rope.
April 1st, 2008 at 7:49 pmJackball:
One glance at Bush’s cabinet and you’ll see that Bush has no problem appointing qualified minorities to positions never before held by a person of color.
Like Ron Brown, Clinton’s former transportation secretary, Or Madeline Albright, Clinton’s Jewish, female secretary of state?
If your point is that Bush was first to appoint a black to a cabinet position, you’re really, really wrong.
April 1st, 2008 at 8:09 pmand then there was Obama’s meltdown with his racist church.
Do you really want to be taken seriously? Try not rhetorically hyperventilating. So now Obama’s whole church is racist? Where did you get that info? The same place you got the lame “Bush was the first to appoint a black” assertion?
April 1st, 2008 at 8:13 pmthe successful conservative minority.
A true oxymoron. Except the minority part.
April 1st, 2008 at 8:15 pmDamn I understood not to piss into the wind at about the same time I learned to piss all on my own. Obviously growing up at sea has its advantages
