McCain Gets Iraq Facts Wrong Again: Says Sadr — Not Maliki — ‘Asked’ For Ceasefire»

Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he was “surprised” by violent clashes between central Iraqi government and militias connected to Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr last week in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. “Maliki decided to take on this operation without consulting the Americans,” McCain told reporters on his campaign bus.

As MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann noted last night, at the same time McCain expressed surprise about the developments in Basra, he also got basic facts wrong about the ceasefire that halted the violence on Sunday. McCain claimed that “it was Sadr who asked for the ceasefire,” not Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Malki:

Asked if the Basra campaign had backfired, he said: “Apparently it was Sadr who asked for the ceasefire, declared a ceasefire. It wasn’t Maliki. Very rarely do I see the winning side declare a ceasefire. So we’ll see.’’

As Mother Jones’ Jonathan Stein notes today, McCain’s description of what happened is “completely misleading” and wrong. In fact, Sadr’s call for a ceasefire only came after members of Maliki’s political party traveled to Iran to broker a deal with him:

The backdrop to Sadr’s dramatic statement was a secret trip Friday by Iraqi lawmakers to Qom, Iran’s holy city and headquarters for the Iranian clergy who run the country.

There the Iraqi lawmakers held talks with Brig. Gen. Qassem Suleimani, commander of the Qods (Jerusalem) brigades of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and signed an agreement with Sadr, which formed the basis of his statement Sunday, members of parliament said.

Ali al Adeeb, a member of Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki’s Dawa party, and Hadi al Ameri, the head of the Badr Organization, the military wing of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, had two aims, lawmakers said: to ask Sadr to stand down his militia and to ask Iranian officials to stop supplying weapons to Shiite militants in Iraq.

According to the AP, “the peace deal between al-Sadr and Iraqi government forces” not only “left the cleric’s Mahdi Army intact,” but it also left Maliki “politically battered and humbled within his own Shi’ite power base.”

This is not the first time in recent memory that McCain has gotten basic facts about Iraq wrong. Two weeks ago, he repeatedly made false claims that Iran was training al Qaeda fighters in Iraq.

The problem is, the election has almost nothing to do with facts. What McCain is selling is “feelings”. When he lies and says, “Apparently it was Sadr who asked for the ceasefire, declared a ceasefire. It wasn’t Maliki. Very rarely do I see the winning side declare a ceasefire.” he’s hoping that ‘the average voter’ will feel a surge of pride about how we’re ‘winning’ and thus ‘number one!’. Unfortunately, he’s got most all of the media willing to play Sousa marches in the background, despite the fact that his descriptions are completely divorced from reality.

It was lies which got us into this mess. Lies cannot get us out.

Why anyone would think that a Conservative has ANY credibility about ANYTHING is completely beyond me. Have they done ANYTHING right??? It seems to me that we should be able to stop asking their opinions one of these days.

The Iraqi president has to go to Iran and ask the clerics to help broker a deal. This strengthens Sadr and weakens Maliki. It also shows the closer ties that Sadr has with Iran. This aids the Shiite factions and will cause greater tension between them and the Sunnis, which will keep the spotlight on Iran and it’s intentions.

This may play out where a weaker Maliki will create the shaky scenario that will give this administration the excuse to escalate against Iran.

gotta love McFlipFlopper, the man who can flipflop quicker than Kerry, in less than a setence….

“asked for” and “declared” are two very very diffrent things…”asked for” implies weakness, that someone else has the power to deny your wish for the fighting to stop.. on the other hand, “declared” implies power, because it doesnt require the other side agree to anything.. you simply declare it, and it happens… if sadr simply said “the fighting will stop” and its stops.. well that sounds to be like the guy is in a pretty good position..

  33. NoOneYouKnow Says:

    1. It’s ridiculous to think that Maliki didn’t check with his masters in Washington before launching the assault against his political enemies.
    2. It’s Maliki and his supporters’ militias that are aligned with Iran; Sadr wants to get rid of the Iranian influence on Iraq.
    3. Sadr is a nationalist who wants to keep Iraq a single nation. He has the backing of about 60% of Iraqis. Maliki is a puppet with support only from his party. He wants to break up Iraq into autonomous zones, which will help Washington gain control over Iraq’s oil.
    4. McCain can say whatever he likes. Pretty soon there are going to be helicopters evacuating Americans from the Green Zone like there were in Saigon in 1975. Bushco has lost; McCain’s trying to keep up a good front until the election, but this summer might be the end of Bushco’s Iraqi adventure.

Your own Liberal NPR says that “Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered his militiamen off the streets.”

Yes. AFTER representatives from ad-Dawa and ISCI asked the Iranians to ask as-Sadr for a cease-fire. As-Sadr agreed to it, and THEN issued orders to the Jaysh to stop firing. You see, it’s not much of a cease-fire if as-Sadr doesn’t actually tell his army to cease firing.

Or, he and Cheney helped put al-Maliki up to the whole thing while he was there, and now is petrified that someone will hang the fiasco around his neck.’

Maliki asked for the ceasefire and Sadar called his followers to honor a ceasefire. Maliki was the loser and in a very bad place. He asked Sadar to do something to get his a$$ out of the frying pan. Sadar obliged and called his men to stand down.
