Two weeks ago, the conservative Family Research Council called on Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to “clarify his stance on marriage and life as it relates to his party’s existing platform.” McCain has remained silent on the issue, but today, the Washington Times reports that “advisers” to his presidential campaign “say he will not try to “soften” the Republican party’s platform on abortion and same-sex marriage to appeal to more voters.” The advisers’ assurance to conservatives comes at the same time that prominent religious conservative James Dobson has told the Wall Street Journal that he sees “no evidence” that McCain is “drawing conservatives into his fold.” “To the contrary, he seems intent on driving them away,” says Dobson.
I still fail to see how “right wing” and “same-sex marriage” belong in one sentence. How dare you, TP.
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:36 amAttention!!! Fish on Deck!
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:43 amThis is just another link in the long chain of issues that won’t change under McCain. His solution to Iraq is to stay the course while beating the drums for Iran (just like we have now), his solution for the economy is to stand back, watch, and wait — his solution for health care is to “increase competition” in the private sector (which means, essentially, doing nothing), and his position on illegal immigration is the same as Bush — make a lot of noise, but do nothing. And while he used to advocate concern about global warming, his position now is to do nothing.
And now, he figures that the best thing to do about same-sex marriage is to just ignore it.
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:45 amBaloney. This is red-meat rhetoric for the conservative base, which will be jettisoned before the general election, when he has to appeal to independents and women.
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:45 amMcCain is treading lightly right now. He’s uneasy about upsetting the applecart he’s spent his whole life loading. But as the election nears and Dobson ups the pressure, McCain will get desperate. That’s what Dobson and his ilk are counting on.

Andrew Sullivan Is A Fraud
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:48 amHopefully the right wing voters will realize that McCain is just pandering to them. He portrays himself as moderate to one audience then as a staunch bigot to another audience. Sometimes he hates the gays and wants to disenfranchise them of their civil rights. Sometimes he doesn’t seem to really embrace the hate the way the good bigots do.
Here’s a clue to any right wing people reading this blog. McCain is lying to you. He is not a staunch conservative, but he thinks you’re too stupid to know the difference. He’s been an elite politician living inside the beltway for so long that he considers Republican voters to be a bunch of yokels who will believe whatever pablum is served them. Unfortunately, he may also be right.

And this is a surprise to anyone?
I say let the hatemongers continue to run the GOP. Let the GOP continue to be the party that stands against freedom and equality. Let the GOP continue to be the party that wants to control the lives of American citizens. Let the GOP run itself into the ground.
It’s not as if they have anything else to run on, eh?
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:56 amMcCain knows his base is gullible enough to believe there is a magic man in the sky that hates gay people, thinks abortion is murder, but war isn’t, and will fear anything their AM radio tells them to fear, be it gays, immigrants, ‘darkies’, or ‘libruls’.
IOW, he knows his base is stupid and he is counting on them.
April 2nd, 2008 at 10:58 amHas McCain ever sponsored a bill to make abortion illegal? For that matter, how many Republican lawmakers have actually done anything to put that particular plank into legislation?
Pandering.
April 2nd, 2008 at 11:03 amWow. “McCain bows to right wing”…??
Now, that’s news – !!

How does McSame stay upright without a spine?
April 2nd, 2008 at 11:38 amDobson and his other wrinkled up friends can scream about gay marriage and abortion all they want but the american people have woken up and these issues are the least of their worries.
The economy is in the tank, the dollar is falling every day, record numbers of people are losing their jobs and their homes, and with the disillusionment of the farce that is the Iraq war people are in no frame of mind to listen to the bullshit that people like Dobson and Robertson spew. This election will be about the economy and Iraq.
The anger that people feel toward Washington is palable–you hear it at the drugstore, the post office, marketing–people are whizzed off.
April 2nd, 2008 at 12:44 pm2 WORDS: STEM CELLS STEM CELLS STEM CELLS… they need to start putting Stem Cell bills through the senate…parade crippled children onto the senate floor..this will sink mccain, because we will have to choose between pandering to screwballs who think we should make sure things smaller than the tip of a needle make it into the garbage safely or screwing over sick kids…

Practical Politician
It is a very practical politician who avoids the so-called same gender marriage issue. bitblt expects the same politician would find it just as practical to ignore the abortion issue. Practices associated with death, homosexuality and abortion, simply do not put the candidate in the best light. bitblt thinks this is because of the implied message in these two issues.
Promoting same-same sexual relationships, which do not produce children, has the implied message that the future of the country isn’t important. This is the same message implied in the supporting the so-called right of a woman to choose to destroy her pre-born. The message is that the future for “…our Posterity…” is not even worth making. This would be the part about “…a nation worth preserving…” that bitblt has frequently mentions
(The words “… our Posterity,..” are in the preamble of the U.S. Constitution. )
How does one address the needs of our posterity when speaking about same-same gender marriage or about abortion?
In addition, the issue itself – so-called homosexual marriage – is essentially a non-issue. The number of people who are actually interested in seeing so called same-same marriage is miniscule. This opinion – which is what it is – is based on the below note of the number of homosexuals in the population. Further, the number of homosexuals who wish to enter a “marriage” relationship is also unknown.
Wouldn’t it be interesting to know about the number of so-called same-same marriages in the states that issue such licenses. Do you suppose the number of marriage licenses issued each year has gone down, has gone up, or has remained steady? One would think it would hold steady after an initial flurry of licenses. bitblt would bet that the number has gone down.
Please save your references to the Fourteenth Amendment for someone who actually believes that new rights are regularly discovered in this amendment.
The Constitution of the United States was not written to encourage or promote immorality.
Believe Hillary is non-committal on this issue. What is OBL saying about this issue?

So rights are directly correlated with the size of the minority?
April 2nd, 2008 at 4:52 pmTypical. McSame is trying to suck up to the Talibangicals and we all know how Dobson and his ilk love to “focus on the gay people.” I hope all the Log Cabin Repub’s bail on McSame.
