ABC News reports:
The Senate took a quick break from the Foreclosure Prevention Act Thursday,to vote on a resolution honoring members of the military killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The resolution, which is assumed to get unanimous support and was offered by Sen. Teddy Kennedy, (D-Mass.), is simple enough, reading: “The Senate honors the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have lost their lives in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and honors their families and loved ones.”
The idea may be simple, yet the text of the resolution goes on for 264 pages; that is how much paper it takes to list the 4,009 names of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines killed in Iraq and 487 names of American servicemen and women killed in Afghanistan.
See the Senate resolution here.
My condolences to the families and friends of the fallen and injured.
Support the Troops. Bring them home.
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:13 pmSo, for the Iraqis that would be 66,000 pages?
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:23 pmDo what’s best for our troops: bring them home and give them full healthcare.

And a new GI Bill Of Rights guaranteeing them a free education.
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:29 pmCheney: “So.”
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:29 pmBush: Leaves abruptly.
Do you think Bush will ever take a look at those 4.009 names?…..nah, it would cut into to his time with his bike.
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:30 pmNow imagine how many pages it would take to list the names of all the Iraqis who have died as a consequence of this needless invasion and occupation.
This occupation must end, the sooner the better.
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:32 pmGregor, multiply by 250 and you get 66,000.
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:35 pmCheney: “So.”
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:37 pmBush: Leaves abruptly.
McCain: “100 years more”.
It breaks my heart that so many families will be forever shattered and broken. All in the name of Greed and Power. I have seen parents in my hometown that just drift through life because they have lost their sons.
My they someday have peace. A parent should never outlive their children.
I don’t believe in revenge or hate. But I truly hope Bush and Cheney are held accountable and are haunted by the crimes they have committed. I forgot you have to have a conscious to feel guilty..

I really don’t think they’re feeling it…
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:47 pmKeith,
Yes, I saw your post after I wrote mine.
Such an absolute waste of lives. What a shame.
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:48 pmZooey, I agree.
I don’t think they feel much of anything..
April 3rd, 2008 at 8:52 pmSome Republican will protest and vote against the resolution because…..wait for it…..wait for it….at least ONE of those dead MUST be a gay or lesbian.

April 3rd, 2008 at 8:57 pmIt is difficult to comprehend that this resolution was offered by a liberal such as Ted Kennedy. The word honor, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, means high respect or a source or cause of credit or glory. Kennedy believes that the “Senate should “honor the services and sacrifice of the men and women who have lost their lives in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom” [what Kennedy neglects to mention is that this was originally called Operation Iraqi Liberation, also known as OIL]. These soldiers, just as I did in a place called Vietnam, participated in the suppression and brutalization of a country that was never a threat to anyone in these United States. I submit that there should be no honor attached to what they did in Iraq.
A much more appropriate word to use in regards to the needless deaths of these soldiers is the word lament which, as the American Heritage Dictionary defines it, refers to an expression of sorrow and regret. These did not die for some ambiguous noble cause; on the contrary, their deaths were totally in vain, occurring because of America’s need to control the oil in the Middle East along with America’s insatiable need for imperialism. Their deaths never should have happened and this is what Kennedy should been saying instead of using words like honor and sacrifice, because their lives were indeed sacrificed for absolutely no justifiable reason whatsoever.
Instead of waving the flag, Kennedy should also have said from the Senate floor: Let us support the troops by extricating them out of that hellhole as quickly and as rapidly as possible. But to his everlasting shame, he did not.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:06 pmEven one page of names is too many.
Especially since they all died over a lie.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:08 pm.
Well,
If Congress cared about the troops, they would honor them by placing them into a LEGAL battlefield, well armed, trained, supplied, WITH a back-up plan for replacements… NO?
But of course this isn’t what is happening. Instead they MOCK the dead with solemn ceremonies that don’t address why the ceremony is being played out in the first place.
If every co-signatory to this resolution actually had some integrity, they would at least question the source of such grief… is the continued occupation of a sovereign nation that posed NO imminent threat to the USA, honorable in the fist place?
Honorable wars require noble causes that CAN be justified.
IRAQ LACKS THAT REQUIREMENT, yet CONNEDgress continues to sell it to the public as a necessary thing to do. Well, if it is SO necessary then…
WHERE’S THE DRAFT?
WHERE’S THE WAR BONDS?
WHERE’S THE RATIONING?
WHERE’S THE NATIONAL SACRIFICE(other than our Constitution and standing in the world)?
.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:46 pmYour absolutely right Wayne. I cringe at what the list will be like next year.
Since we all know Bush can’t admit he is wrong and bring the soldiers back home.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm4009 killed on Iraq soil… we see that number go up only when one dies ON Iraq soil.
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:51 pmThe other 8 times as many killed en route to the hospital or after arriving to the hospital do not count?
During the Vietnam war names continued to be added years after the war. I believe the last name was added in 1980
AND did I hear MSM, the ones also invested in MIC, making an issue of the fact we have not lost that many as compared to Vietnam, meaning this so called war is not that bad? Is there any truth anywhere?
Hey Ginbreath, progressives/liberals are out protesting the war. Unfortunately the average tool like yourself only watches Fox News and other right wing MSM and so you know nothing about it. Our fascist administration won’t even let us see the coffins of fallen heroes on television, they certainly won’t let you see protest.
And what do you war mongering pieces of crap do to stop the war, support McCain who wants 100 more years of it.
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:21 pmGin,
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:30 pmIt is a different world as compared to the Vietnam era.
* our media lies, covers up attempted protests, covers up the truth of this so called war, the treatment of the soldiers and the true number of deaths. Then you had Chrincite giving accurate numbers and photos weer allowed to be shown
* Too many fear loss of job, or can not find the time because of working excessively to make ends meet.
* Our fascist government designates where the protests are to be held, and that can be out of sight.
* There is no draft. During the Vietnam war the draft was in effect AND those from the wealthy homes were able to keep their kids in college to avoid the draft.. a huge class issue.

April 3rd, 2008 at 10:13 pm “….JFK/LBJ’s little adventure.”
Did you know that half the deaths came under Nixon? Did you know VP Nixon wanted to go nuclear when the VietCong defeated the French in 1954?
Did you know Ford cut and ran based on the timelines that Nixon and Kissinger negotiated with the enemy?
Did you know that according to Haldeman’s diary, Nixon sabotaged the peace talks in 1968 and 1972 because he thought peace would be bad for him politically?

April 4th, 2008 at 1:02 amyou guys see my video to Davis Fleetwood about how we as citizens can end the war?
http://oldhacks.blogspot.com
also the number 4000 isn’t even close to the real number of Americans being killed. just throw “4000 dead” in the search on my blog. I did some research. the numbers almost to 10,000
April 4th, 2008 at 1:05 amThis is off topic and I apologize.
If you read a single article, I strongly suggest reading this one: False Flag Prospects, 2008 — Top Three US Target Cities by Captain Eric H. May. The following are exerts:
“Good morning. At this moment, somewhere in the world, terrorists are planning new attacks on our country. Their goal is to bring destruction to our shores that will make September the 11th pale by comparison.” — George W. Bush, Feb. 13, 2008
We can only stop the deadly drift of America by understanding 9/11 and anticipating the next 9/11. Many of the vociferous voices impeding our understanding and anticipation are performing a vital service for treason. The federal government once used counterintelligence programs (COINTELPRO) against the Vietnam era antiwar and civil rights movement, and common sense would suggest that they are using it again in the post-9/11 era, this time against the antiwar and 911 truth movement. The most dangerous voices of all our those from false friends who have infiltrated us to confuse us until the traitors who carried out 9/11 can repeat their performance.
Read this article. It’s quite frightening.

April 4th, 2008 at 1:35 amInstead of condemning what others do, motivate and lead people. Get out front and fight for what YOU believe in. If you are against the war, stand up and be counted. If you are pro-occupation, stand up and fight. Stop worrying about what we “so called progressives” are doing and be a leader!
April 4th, 2008 at 9:09 amWhere is the resolution remembering the several hundreds of thousands dead Iraqi civilians expressing condolences to their suffering loved ones? I searched couldnt find a single one relating to the Iraqi people. Several on Darfur and of course lots in support of poor Israel. None for the Iraqis
I guess they are just supposed to be content and gratefull for “the precious gift of freedom” (as Hillary Clinton recently put it) that the Americans brought to them.
April 4th, 2008 at 10:26 amHow come they always forget the 1200 or so contractors (some American, some foreign nationals) who have died during this war?
What about all those soldiers and contractors who have been wounded, some very, very severely?
What about all the Iraqi dead and injured?
April 4th, 2008 at 12:48 pmMemorial Day is coming up, it would be nice for the names of the fallen to be read out loud. Perhaps some who haven’t lost a loved one would take a moment to listen to the names. Maybe hearing 4009 names would provoke momentum to stop this travesty.
April 4th, 2008 at 4:08 pmIt has come out now, that this was an illegal war, prompted by those greedy for oil power. So it is time to bring our family members home.
just pure symbolism….the nothing-do Congress and nothing-do populace just let our guys die each and every day
April 4th, 2008 at 4:16 pmNext they can read off the names of the dead Iraqi citizens, that should make sure they finally earn their gold plated pensions.
