Bush ‘abruptly’ leaves NATO meeting.

Yesterday, President Bush tried to prematurely cut off a joint press conference in Romania with the country’s president Traian Basescu, even though “as a matter of courtesy and protocol, the host decides when such an event is over.” Today, the Washington Post’s Peter Baker reports that Bush also left a NATO summit meeting early:

Enough is enough, it seems. With the NATO summit meetings consistently running two hours over schedule most of the day, President Bush abruptly got up and left the last formal session of the day, not bothering to wait for an official summit photograph of all the leaders.

Bush is no fan of windy meetings and evidently had had his fill. He left behind Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to represent him for the rest of the session, which concerned NATO operations in Afghanistan, but his departure was so sudden and unexpected that he left some of his motorcade behind, inculding his press pool, when he got into his car and headed back to his hotel.

I’m usually the first person to defend TP writers (and particularly of Amanda) from accusations of mis-statement but this is truly bullsh!t. It’s a short article, and a few paragraphs farther on:

Bush was not the first leader to leave while the conversation dragged on. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper were seen leaving before Bush did. “He wanted to get back here in order to pick up Mrs. Bush and get ready for the evening events,” the White House official said. The evening events, including a cultural presentation and a dinner among the leaders, were then delayed to give everyone enough time to rest and get ready. The official photograph Bush was supposed to pose for was canceled.

Maybe I’m having a rare moment of empathy for Shrub with all the pointless meetings I have to sit through at work, but srsly, this is just childish distortion by Amanda.

Can you imagine if we had a Democratic President who walked out of that kind of meeting? They would be crucified by the mainstream media for not caring about the War on Terror. Right-wing blogs would be livid. But as usual, Bush will get a free pass, just like he did on 9/11 when he couldn’t be bothered to listen to warnings, took August of 2001 as a vacation, and didn’t even leave that classroom when they told him we were under attack.

NATO, once the powerful tool of the US has fallen into disarray. What once appeared to be unity of a small group of nations with an important mission, (stopping the USSR), has evolved into an ineffective group of more nations with no real goal or agenda. NATO should be disbanded. This meeting is an attempt by BushCo to bring NATO back to life, and enhance it, so it can once more be used by the US to promote its foreign policy agenda. (Like “encouraging” the members to provide more troops for the fighting in Afghanistan. Another “coalition of the coerced” in a different form, it seems to me.)

I see your point gummitch but bush still has no class. This is not the first time it has “looked bad” because of him.

  38. oldtree says:

Look at the pictures of him from these last few days, he is all red faced, weaving as he walks, and from the looks on people’s faces, slightly incoherent. Leaving a meeting unannounced, is unannounced. Meaning, he didn’t tell anyone and it caused a panic for security and such. It is incredibly noteworthy that a supposed president of the US is acting erratic and certainly against normal policy which would dictate his SS bodyguards would decide when to allow him to move.
The story is in the facts.

Bush left NATO unhappy because he campaigned very hard to get Georgia and Ukrania a membership in NATO.

European countries do not want to have future problems with Russia which oppsosed to such idea.
Bush felt unhappy because he hoped that the two ex-Soviet states will join.

distorting reality is the business of “conservatives.”I agree with gummich here, and in his posts above.

Regarding your thought, although what you say is true, isn’t it truly past time to be highlighting all the misdeeds of Bush and BushCo? BushCo has less than 10 months left in power and then they are gone. Our interest, and job, at this time should be to concentrate on the upcoming election (assuring our victory) and planning how we will hold the next Democratic administration to account. We, as progressives, have a lot of serious thinking and work to do. Making fun of, or ridiculing, this criminal administration simply distracts us from that work.

Merlin – so many people always want to just move on. But where is the accountability so that past corruptness doesn’t continue ? These people need to be shown for what they are, ruthless, corrupt beyond comprehension.

Moving on was not my point. Demanding accountability is part of the “work” I was alluding to. (Holding the next Democratic administration to account.) We should not allow another “Clinton” caper in 1992 where he let 41 and all the crooks get away scot free. My concern in that post was, after reading this entire thread, your point here was not being addressed (be shown for what they are). We are singing to the choir here (ourselves) not to anyone that matters! Bushco knows who they are, and exactly what they are doing. We show them nothing by our complaints here. They are not stupid, or unknowing. They have simply written us off. (”So?”) Rather, let’s attack the real work involved in formulating, as Progressives, what WE want, and where WE are going. Attacking BushCo as we are doing here, although it is a lot of fun, (through humor or expressing anger for example) is really unproductive at this important time, in my view.

That is not to say Bush was in a meeting that had gone two hours past the scheduled time. No way. It is merely saying that the cumulatively the day was behind a couple of hours from what was planned. Bush could have walked out 30 min after showing up for all we know. Not likely, true. With regard to earlier expressions of sympathy for Chimpy (i.e., those who don’t like sitting through long meetings in their own jobs, the contention that Harper and Sarkozy left even before the Bubble Boy), I would offer the following contentions: 1) Chimpy did not seek this job because he needs the money. Rather, it was/is undoubtedly a matter of seeking power. Someone who doesn’t like attending meetings should not seek the Presidency. Perhaps those who have offered such sympathies are also independently wealthy and are merely working in their jobs as a hobby? 2) Stephen Harper and Nicolas Sarkozy have both attempted to shove their countries toward the reich (perhaps, in many respects, the three are of like mind). Neither Harper nor Sarkozy would reasonably be considered positive role models by any self-respecting progressive. Contending that Chimpy is no worse is no compliment.
